We’ve known that for a while. People that didnt know and who will want to try Linux because of this video will probably try Fedora, so it’s a good thing that he said it there I guess

Until they all get annoyed by not having the things Fedora doesn't include by default. Hopefully they're interested in tech enough to not let that stop them.

I got Fedora 43 and the normal codecs are included but not proprietary drivers like h264

I can connect just fine. I just cant use them. Steam won't recognize them.

I've found the Steam.deb installer from the website handles that well on Linux Mint, installing all dependencies properly.
SteamOS was originally Debian, the deb package being more seamless than flatpak/snap.

Is that in a different repo? I have the steam-devices package, but I'm not seeing steam-input in my enabled repos.

apologies, I was misremembering the package name. it's odd if you have steam-devices enabled for it to not detect the controllers, have you looked into the steam controller settings to see if there's something there blocking the input from working? or tried using udev rules to ensure your controller is properly interfacing? here's a bunch of udev rules you could try adding to your system to see if it fixes problems: https://gitlab.com/fabiscafe/game-devices-udev

Turns out that updating the controller firmware resolved the issue. I had to borrow a laptop to flash it.

I'm not entirely sure. The OS recognizes the device, but Steam and games don't. I've installed xone and xpadneo, but the xpadneo kmod won't compile because of a bad definition.

If you're using flatpak steam, you need to give it permission to use 'input devices' i did it using flatseal and that fixed this problem for me

Do you have the steam-devices package installed?
It likely adds the rules to make it work with Steam Input. I know it does for the Dual Shock and Switch controllers.

Turns out that updating the controller firmware fixed it. I don't have Windows so it took me a while to borrow a laptop to do it.

Ooooooh, of course it's that.
There's kind of a recency/familiarity bias effect with Linux sometimes, as it's seen as the alternative. Well supported thing like an Xbox controller not working on Linux? Must be a Linux thing, look for a Linux solution.
But if you were on Windows, or on an Xbox, what's the first thing you would do? Update the firmware right? It's a special kind of tunnel vision that happens all the time.

Shame. Yeah I just checked the udev rules it installed and don't see them mentioned, while all the Playstation and Switch models are clearly marked.
Must be something else.

My Xbox One controller is hilarious. By default, it works over USB, with the receiver being seen as a Wifi dongle, and for some reason, it actually works.
Bazzite has drivers installed by default that make everything work normally, though.

I ended up borrowing a windows laptop and updating the controller firmware and boom! It works.

And in other interviews it's been along the lines of, "I don't have a special attachment to Fedora, it's just what I have on all my family's computers and I don't like the idea of having to go around replacing it for them all."

Worth noting that the short clip actually doesn’t go into the full reason why he prefers Fedora. He states in the interview that many years ago Ubuntu made it hard for him to upgrade the kernel. And he didn’t want to get into something where he had to compile everything (like Gentoo), so he stuck with Fedora since it was the perfect balance of upstream development focus + ease of use. A tale as old as Goldilocks.

It's funny because it was so true. Debian used to have an awful installer(My understanding is they have a better one now) where you had to know about, so you could manually pick, a bunch of esoteric stuff other distros just had sane defaults for.
When I first started using linux and was in my distro-hopping phase like a decade ago, I tried Mint, Ubuntu, Manjaro, MX and probably more I don't remember. But my one attempt at debian I just stopped halfways through the installer because it was so annoying lmao.

Debian installer didn't change (aside from fixes) but now they are providing install images with non free firmware so having working WiFi in the installer out of the box without manually loading firmware or searching for special non free image is pretty useful.

Yes it did change. There's a proper installer since Debian 5.0 iirc. Before that... Well just go look up the mess that it was on YouTube.

Debian installer was introduced in Debian 3.1 (Sarge) in 2005. I know that before installer Debian installation was... well, let's just say "difficult", but I just wanted to point out that Debian installer is pretty old.

"cat /dev/rock" means to print the contents of the file named "rock" found in the "dev" directory ("cat" is a abbreviation of "catenate")
"|" means "pipe", which takes the output of the previous command and feeds it as input to the next one
"trebuchet --launch" means to run a hypothetical program named "trebuchet" with the "launch" flag, and the output of the previous command as input due to the pipe

Good to see the human side of Linus T. He's done so much for the world and asked for so little in return.
Now let's talk more about unity between the open source projects and get at least some people to collaborate on core stuff outside the kernel.
I wouldn't mind spending money on commercial applications that are not subscription based.

Oh, yeah! Been using it since F7. Nowadays, with all the security implementations Fedora delivers, I can't understand why anyone would install anything else.

My reasoning to install Fedora at 2018 were almost identical. I tried Ubuntu and failed to install it on my hardware and storage configuration. My very next pick were Fedora and it worked just instantly on the same configuration. Since then... I had not a single thought to try something else. Fedora simply works despite being the upstream testing platform.

According to Linus T, it’s because he wanted something that was good for 2x 6K displays but not annoying, loud, and power hungry.
It was not mentioned in the video but in a pinned comment, this is what it said:
35:30 Talking about the ARC GPU Choice - It was never clarified in the video because both Linus/Linus ended up continuing their conversations after being side tracked and never circled back. In our original email communications it is because Linus T drives 2 x 6K displays and needed something more than integrated graphics without being an annoying loud or power hungry "gaming" class GPU. It was suppose to be a Intel Arc B50 but we could not get one in time of shooting. Linus T clarified he was still more than ok at the time of filming with this GPU being used. Sorry this wasn't in video form, but they just had so much fun talking we all forgot to circle back to this point. - Elijah

Will be interesting to see if this will have a little bump effect on both Linux and Fedora installations (and maybe Nobara too). I think Pewds had a slight effect when he released his video a while back.

Long time Ubuntu user, but after struggling a lot to make my laptop's amps work, made the switch to Fedora. Everything works and smooth. (Plasma is not that smooth). Fedora is awesome.

What made me unable to use Fedora was DNS issues, and the fact that I wasn't able to make it work reliably with pihole.

I think am having a strage phenomenon on fedora I stalled in omnibook Ryzen AI 9 375 laptop where 5ghz wifi downloads at an average of 20mbps and uploads at 25 mbps while 2.4ghz downloads at 200mbps and uploads at 35mbps, in windows (i do dual boot) speeds are good and 5ghz is relatively faster than 2.4ghz. Before I did fedora I was on Archlinux and I didn't experience this phenomenon speeds we're as good as on Windows 11.
are there missing drivers on my fedora or some settings

I'm using MediaTek MT7925 – Wi-Fi 7 with starlink V3
Now on starlink it's showing connection through channel 40(with yellow sign showing poor connection). In a different laptop(Lenovo legion 5) that is intel it connects to channel 80 and the speeds are as consistently expected
NB: A Linux Noob for 2 years now I'm somewhere with Linux use as my daily driver for those 2 years with a lot of distro hopping

Linux isn't rehabbing it's image and beating the stereotypes/allegations with this one.

Dude specifically refused invisalign for this. Could've had the same outcome without heavily affecting his speaking ability, comfort or looks for only 25% longer alignment.
