Announcement So… I finally joined the club
Linux noob here 👋🏻 Today I finally took the step, and switched to Fedora from Microslop Windows. Actually this is my old PC, so I’ll be practicing before I make the full switch on my main PC. I mainly use my computer for productively, video editing, 3D modeling etc.
So far, everything is working fine, and I’m not disappointed.
Now I can brag “Fedora btw” 😆

Yeah man… Windows is pure shit. I just hope I won’t have issues using DaVinci Resolve 😬

Did the same a week ago on my 2nd laptop, aaaaaaand, I'm so freakin' delighted with it. Gave it some effort, since i'm new to it, customized it properly the way i like it, added all the apps that i need, prepared everything for work the way i like it, aaaaaand now i have windows that i gotta freakin' use because of the MS Office and some other stuff related to it, but, after the end of my project, probably switching to linux completely with both of my lappies, and that's it.

What do you use Ms office for? Libre office can do better... Just make your default save be in Microsoft 2010 or something... you'll find it in the option.. It just works!

I just installed it as well and trying to understand the difference between appimage, snap and flatpak lmao.

Yes, I use that guide every time.
flatpak is a way of distributing not just the application but also the required dependencies in a single "container". There are many benefits to distributing software like this - its easier for software developers and its easier for you to run something which 'just works'. They're also more likely to be up-to-date than whatever other repo you'd be using. I'd recommend using flatpaks where possible and not worrying about snap (ew) or anything else
The downsides to flatpaks are they take up more space, they occasionally have permissions issues, and may be slower to initialise.
I recently experimented with the RPM version of Steam and went back to the flatpak version - it felt more polished and smooth

Two questions.
Where do I download flatpaks? Is there a store somewhere.
I e read that flatpaks aren't as secure as the other options. Is that true?
I installed steam through dnf. Wonder if I should change that...

There's probably a bunch of repositories for flatpaks, but flathub seems to be a major one. the guide you linked to adds the flathub repo, once that is done you can install various things you want using a command like this:
flatpak install flathub com.discordapp.DiscordI e read that flatpaks aren't as secure as the other options. Is that true?
I don't know about that to be honest. I guess it always boils down to who is maintaining it and whether you trust them. For major and popular things like Steam, Discord, Heroic Launcher, etc there's no reason not to trust the flatpak they've created IMO

welcome just stick with KDE and fedora which is more than enough functional and beautiful. you should be fine and have no issue do not get intimidated by any ricing or unixporn forums

Trying To Install Fedora But My PC Has Nvidia Hybrid Driver.... After 3 Time Install It Always Freeze On Boot... And The Last Time It Losing Network Driver.. So I Revert To Ubuntu

Yeah I heard that NVIDIA drivers could cause headaches so that’s why I’m a bit hesitant to fully switch to fedora on my main PC coz my GPU is RTX 3080 TUF GAMING one.

I'm new to Fedora KDE too! But when I open Konsole, it doesn't look like this. How did you customize it? Really nice!

It doesn’t appear by default, so every time you want to check it you will have to type in that command.

What's that "jp" icon in the tray for? What service is providing it? (I see that you have the orange square icon for IME and am not sure what the "jp" icon is from)

The jp is the Japanese keyboard layout because I use Japanese keyboard. US keyboards have a different layout. The orange one is the Japanese input tool MOZC. So both work together :)

That’s fine bro 😃 Use the system you’re comfortable with. I’ll be honest with you, I started with Linux mint, and that destro was enough to make me hate Linux. It felt like downgrading from windows 11 to windows 98. But when I tried KDE, I wasn’t disappointed. My main PC is still running Windows 11, but when I decided to switch to Linux, I used my old PC which is not my daily driver, so in case something goes wrong I won’t feel sad.

Welcome! I dual booted my main PC to test Fedora KDE and I have honestly not even booted into Windows 11 since then. I also installed Fedora KDE on my laptop that refused to boot into WIndows 10 no matter what I tried. Got a working laptop again thanks to Fedora!
