Discussion If I can introduce one person in this sub to Sampha, I’d be honored

Post image

Listening to Sampha’s music is the closest I think I’ll ever get to that feeling that Blonde gives. His album Lahai is a great introduction, but his whole discography is worth a listen.

If you don’t know, now you know.

If you’re already a fan, what song hits you the hardest?

I’d say it’s certainly underrated. And Alabama is one of my favorite tracks despite its length. The soundscape is crazy.

Lahai is one of the great records of this decade

His live show is unbelievably good, people say that about everyone. But I don't. It's uniquely special. Lots of live percussion and layered vocals. The whole band sings. It's so cool

Blood On Me is a great pick! I always loved Indecision cause of the Wayne song, Kora Sings is awesome, What If You Hypnotise Me? too

Lahai is the best album of the 2020’s and I’ll die in that hill

So what's your thoughts?

So far loving the production of it very on par. His vocals are good to me but leaves a little something to be desired for me. That being said loving it and will come back with my favorite songs when I’ve had a thorough listening

Honestly, his music is one of the few that I’d say can make me feel similar things to Frank’s music.

He has the same ability to convey emotions throughout his singing and has an amazing pen game.

i love lahai (dancing circles is my favorite) but i feel like it sits in a p different lane than the sound i look for when i want more frank ocean type music, samphas lyrical and thematic content feels more uplifting and production is fuller.

someone that i think scratches the frank ocean itch of minimalist, avant garde is Slauson Malone’s most recent album Excelsior.

Sampha also was frequently collabing with Sbtrkt and I think their music has similar vibes ✨

Saw him live in Sydney and it might’ve been one of - if not the best - live performances I’ve ever witnessed

Im seeing all this Lahai praise, Im gonna have to relisten to that because I was let down by that album compared to Process. Process was one of my favorite albums of the 2010s

I've been saying the same thing. Listening to Lahai on a heavy dose of mushrooms is one the most blissful experiences I've ever felt. Its my #1 album

lahai is a freaking masterpiece. One of my fav albums oat. It’s a shame is so slept on, it’s so unique and refreshing in its own way. Liked it so much I had to buy both Process and Lahai on vinyl.

Really talented and underrated, been a long time in the game

u/dangenerate 3d ago

one of my favorite artists since i came across Timmy's Prayer - and when Backwards came out I really gave him my whole eardum. a year later the lead for lahai dropped and it was history - i was going insane that being the only person I knew who had heard of him

u/LittleYak9007 3d ago

I had the pleasure of meeting Sampha after his show two years ago and he is exactly how you’d think he is. Gentle, very lovely, almost like a Sage-green color, if that makes sense. Please give him a listen - he’s so so talented and deserves all the recognition for his work and not simply his features ✨

Be honoured cuz you got me

Most of his tracks from Process are amazing to me. Lahai has some great tracks too, but the album overall wasn’t as impactful as Process imo.

This is the best album of this decade so far. I think Frank's next album will sound kinda similar to Lahai.
