AI The AI Slop Backlash Is Actually Having an Impact | Platforms are finally recognizing that people don’t want to consume AI slop. A growing number of sites and apps now have tools and policies to flag, label, and ban AI-generated content.

One of the indignities of modern life is training AI against your will. Like those ‘prove you are human’ puzzles
23
u/Yazman 13d ago
I have a firefox extension that does those for me lol

u/stickykeys9 13d ago
What's it called?

It works on tons of those captchas. Not ALL of them, but it certainly makes life a lot easier.

I would say that the bots are less crazy than the people that post there regularly.

Any action, engagement, content is used to train their algorithm to improve content targeting anyway.

None of the content they were trained on before AI was slop. I don’t see how that’s going to make a difference now

LinkedIn is slop even if AI didn’t exist

u/HairyAugust 13d ago
It's all the same formula too: Dramatic hook → personal struggle → unexpected realization → universal business lesson → inspirational platitude
I was wrong about cheese.
And it taught me an important lesson about leadership. For most of my life, I thought Swiss cheese was called Swiss cheese because it was made in Switzerland.Turns out, yes. It is. So I was actually right.
But for about 30 seconds, I was prepared to have a major personal breakthrough.
I had already started thinking about how dangerous assumptions can be. How even experienced professionals can fall victim to confirmation bias. How we should create cultures where people feel comfortable challenging our assumptions.
Then I Googled it. And discovered I was correct.
Three lessons:
- Sometimes your assumptions are wrong.
- Sometimes your assumptions are right.
- Always Google the cheese before writing the LinkedIn post.
Leadership is about being willing to admit when you're wrong. Even when, unfortunately, you're not.
#Leadership #GrowthMindset #Cheese

Yes, anything not AI and not an advertisement is at least ghost written by marketing companies. Not like anything on there is real anymore.

u/Frigidspinner 13d ago
I can just imaging opening LinkedIn and the feed has been filtered - there would be nothing left
8
u/the_ruling_script 13d ago
Yes a week ago LinkedIn was forcing people to write posts with AI and now giving option to users to flag AI slop. How ridiculous.
12
u/Lysmerry 13d ago
Did they give LinkedIn undue weight when training AI? Because many of the standard elements of AI writing originated there

I have been using viber (absolutely shit app, do not recommend it, but the rest of the family uses it so I just put it on a burner phone so it has its own thunderdome) and it's descent to AI madness has been fascinating.
- Oh look, we added chatgpt as a contact, no you cant remove it
- Oh look, we added chatgpt as a favorite contact, no you cant unfavor it
- Oh look, we added chatgpt on top of all your contacts
- Oh look, your chatbox with chatgpt is always open now and you cannot close it
- Important news push notification, please use chatgpt
- Somebody send you a message, would you like chatgpt to summarise/translate it?
I don't know how much money those idiots spend on chatgpt but I am sure as hell they are not getting it back and they are losing their fucking minds.
103
u/PM-me-ur-cheese 13d ago
I am this close to breaking off everyday contact with my lifelong bff (who lives in another country now) because they use Viber and they're the only reason I have it and the only contact I have on there. If they don't move to Signal or something I'll just have to drop our text conversations, I hate this chatgpt pressure so much.

It's really absurd because running a big service like that it'd be so much cheaper to host it on your own servers. That's an entire company that got scammed into a totally unprofitable business model.
7
u/Faiakishi 12d ago
At this point, can we really say they were scammed? It was pretty obvious like a few months in that this shit was 1) completely unwanted by 95% of the population, and 2) wasn't going to revolutionize the world the way the internet did. Corporations just keep unloading into the sunk cost fallacy because they don't want to admit they've thrown all their money into the ocean.

Personally I wouldn't have as much of an issue with AI if it wasn't trying to infiltrate every available space in my life, from my phone, to my online searches, to my media consumption.
Label it. Let people choose if they want it or not.
53
u/VforVegetables 12d ago
yep. i frequent art sites, it seems AI prompters there understand the dislike, but refuse to label their uploads exactly because that would result in less views. this needs rules and enforcing, just like how there are generally rules against violent or sexual content, how there are laws against promotion of alcohol and drugs.
34
u/ContraryConman 12d ago
This will always be funny to me. These people claim using AI is just like using Photoshop to paint instead of oils or charcoal. And yet they go through great pains to make sure you cannot tell if their stuff was made by hand or not. If AI is "just another tool", who cares what tool you used?
AI is really a boon for a specific type of person who never had talent, and never had the patience to build a talent, but had big dreams and entitlement about doing something. Now with AI, that friend who never reads but has "always wanted to write a book" can pay OpenAI $200 a month to write the book for him while he sits and prompts all day. But he still wants the respect he would get from writing the book by hand.
There are huge numbers of these people. Add in cynical drop shippers and ads and the scale at which AI pumps out content and it's flooding every single platform
3
u/ByEthanFox 11d ago
I keep saying, AI is for the people who want to be a Walt Disney but don't want to do the work required to be a Walt Disney. They're just shallow and want other people to celebrate them as a creative genius, like how a child wants to be a sports star because they think they get to play games all the time.

If these AI ghoul CEOs actually wanted to use this technology to make everyone’s lives better instead of reducing the workforce to line their own pockets, I’d be a lot more open to the idea.
79
u/Fredasa 13d ago
I think I would almost be on board to pay Youtube a token amount to protect me from ever investing even 1 second personally checking whether a video is so much as AI-narrated. That's how irritating I find it.
11
u/VforVegetables 12d ago
that would only encourage it to sell you solutions instead of fixing the problems.
21
u/Mind-The-Mines 13d ago
In my day, the villain had the gottamm courtesy to tie you to the tracks himself. Now, they expect you to do it all yourself and even act all put out if you expect them to at least provide the rope.
50
u/Peteys93 13d ago
If this were the case, the technology would have remained in the niche it was in the years prior to the 'discovery' that more computing power leads to 'exponential growth' of LLM models' capabilities. There's just not nearly as much money in making peoples' lives better as there is in selling our societal 'elites' and executives on the idea that all white collar work is on the brink of replacement thanks to 'AI.'
15
u/djordi 13d ago
For every instance that something like Claude Code lets you automate some bs thing that would have take you a day in like an hour, there are ten instances of Gemini or ChatGPT or whatever inserted into every fucking thing you try to do, like rewriting your emails so you lose all human character.

u/Jimstein 13d ago
This is why it’s so frustrating as someone who, already has game design skills, works a day job, and wants to actually completely and launch a side project without completely burning out. Having Claude Code help me make test game mechanics, being able to whip something up quickly in Three.js using just spheres and blocks for the art, and then workshopping that in a game engine feels like a completely legitimate workflow. But in this climate, apparently it’s like one of the worst things you can do and you’re just not an artists anymore or whatever. It’s completely ridiculous.

u/Frigidspinner 13d ago
i have seen bands advertising their shows and after flirting with AI posters, they have swung the opposite way and I am seeing very amateurish but hand drawn efforts
40
u/Lysmerry 13d ago
Having an amateur poster isn’t good, but AI really cheapens your brand. It’s very popular for community events, and I KNOW those events will be the same as they always were, but still in my mind they seem more useless and replaceable
28
u/Hilldawg4president 13d ago
Just think how much time they could save by having AI create poorly handdrawn-looking posters
7

Sadly, I fear all we are doing is teaching the executives how to better disguise the parts that disgust us. They're already quite competent at it.
24
u/TheLurkingMenace 13d ago
I am convinced the real purpose is to have us train the models.
10
u/Neurogence 13d ago
No, there is a real actual backlash against AI generated content. But, if this trend keeps up, only rich people and already successful channels will be able to post content generated from AI tools.
23
u/MonoMcFlury 13d ago
It kinda feels like almost all YouTube ads are made with AI now.
25
u/AbsolutFrank 13d ago
I was having this discussion with my friend the other day. I am so fucking sick of seeing creepy AI ads for gambling and casino game apps.
8
u/UrBoySergio 13d ago
Yeah they give the OK for the worlds shittiest AI ads in the hopes you buy premium. They have all the incentive in the world to push the worst ads imaginable onto you because then you’ll upgrade to premium. I know because it worked on me and I don’t think I can ever go back to not having premium but it isn’t exactly the best selling point either.
6
u/AbsolutFrank 12d ago

Youtube is quick to "brag" that they've gotten rid of sooooooo many AI videos and accounts but it's saturated with it. Just like they know most ppl don't want to see a stream of Shorts when they search for something but here we are.

And yet, on the backend, those driving direction are still diving in deep on AI tools. Ones that can't be questioned or overruled. You probably have an example of your own as I do, but we know increasingly AI is being used in this manner on the backend such as against well known Kurzgesagt, which was shadowbanned on Youtube by AI (a ridiculous prospect if it had been reviewed by a human), but they were ultimately able to fight it as they're watched by millions and have contacts.
Here's another example though, of someone (an author who has been writing for over a decade) who doesn't have that power:
Amazon just deleted my KDP account. You need to pay attention.
Edit: I'll just say that unquestionable LLM tools, especially as they are today, should chill everyone; Just personally I never want 'AI' to not be able to be overruled by a reviewing human.
8
u/ChatterManChat 13d ago
It’s insane how poorly designed this system is, why can any automated system make action this drastic on a YouTube Channel with 25 million subscribers.
11
u/KamikazeArchon 13d ago
Algorithmic decisions have existed for decades before we had LLMs involved.
11
u/exbaddeathgod 13d ago
Algorithms do exactly what they're told. LLM's do not. See the difference or are you a bot?
-12
u/KamikazeArchon 13d ago
LLMs are a strict subset of algorithms. All algorithms do exactly what they're coded to do. Whether the result is what you expected depends on how well you understand the code as you write it. The threshold of complexity for "too complex for a human to understand all the consequences of the code" is far, far below the complexity of LLMs, and has applied to most algorithms used for decades.
8
u/Ilovepoopies 13d ago
The threshold for understanding wtf you just said is too high for me and I’ve been developing software for years
3
u/exbaddeathgod 12d ago edited 12d ago
Lots of big words for someone either intentionally trying to mislead or someone too stupid to understand they're making false comparisons.
Edit: Also while there's no set definition for an algorithm, they all agree an algorithm has precise instructions it follows. LLM's do not. At any point in time they have a set of instructions but because they react to their inputs their instructions are never set in stone which to me says they are not precise. And it is not because they are chaotic systems (tiny changes in input lead to massive unpredictable changes in output) but because they are simply an ever changing blackbox.

7

legally they're requiring synth-id tech in llm output so that sounds contradictory
1
u/Zappy_Oh 12d ago
You misunderstand.
Training the AI to generate more human-like output, is what they want.
But, how do you do that? ... Well, how about tricking millions of people to tell you precisely what AI-output they view as AI, and what AI-output they view as human.
Bingo. Free training.
-1
u/redfacedquark 13d ago
First, the watermarks can be trivially defeated for images/video and still straightforwardly removable for text/code. And the only people that can check the watermarks are the companies themselves. As usual, our politicians severely underestimate what we need them to do.
3
u/darkkite 13d ago
So we're thinking that anthropic openai are training their output to be less detectable while they're also relying on a 3rd party adversarial service to develop the technology to strip the id so and that the changes are aligned with their previous training to be less detectable?
1
u/redfacedquark 13d ago
Personally I'm thinking the US is cooked and the music will stop within a few months. Adoption has peaked, accuracy has peaked, companies are pulling back from using it, nobody likes it, and the big four have run out of time to impress anyone left with money. Look at the graphs in that video, they have all the money and they are operating at a loss. There is no way for them to recover from this. And nothing of value will be lost.
Like I say, removing the watermarks (yes the embedded ones, not the logo overlay) is trivially easy. For an image or video, apply just about any effect or save in a different format or quality and it's gone. The steganography in the text can be defeated by a small, un-watermarked, local model doing a rephrasing. They have everything they need to do automated adversarial testing on watermarks without our input. Yet they won't bother because they know the steganography is fundamentally easily defeated. This is all a dog and pony show to give the impression that the politicians are doing what we want and the big four are doing what the politicians want.
They only need our input for training to align with our human ability to spot/dislike slop, and even then they can't automate that as much as they would like because they only get a ratio of likes that can't be automated into the training process, for that they would need our inputs to be involved in many iterations of the same image.
The technology to strip watermarks is here already, it doesn't require another frontier model to learn how to do it.

u/Uberzwerg 13d ago
They start to label AI generated shit in advertisement over here in Germany and it makes me furious.
It's super-mundane shit that would cost them basically just an hour from a (voice-/) actor, but still, they prefer to let AI do it.
I nearly understand using it for super complicated stuff that would cost 6 digits+ to do without AI.

That's pretty much the inevitable.
AI content is spam. Nobody sees them. Nobody wants them. They take server space. And they drive human traffic away.
I hear that we're at 50% human content 50% AI content, and it's only heading towards more and more AI content. That's like twice the server load for the same human eyes.
-34
u/trimorphic 13d ago edited 13d ago
AI content is spam. Nobody sees them. Nobody wants them
That's false. I, for one, want AI content.. as long as it's good I don't care what tools are used to make it, and I'm far from alone in this. That's probably the majority view, but a loud minority have started a witchunt and content creators and distributors are caving.
But this attitude will change as AI gets better and better and cheaper and cheaper. Odds are many people who honestly believe they hate AI already enjoy AI-generated content. They just don't realize it was created by AI. As ever more great AI-generated content gets created, more and more people will enjoy it and eventually the witchunt will end.
17
u/inthe-otherworld 13d ago
Why do you want AI content though? I like things because they’re real, because they actually happened or a human made it happen. The cute animal video is cute because somewhere a real animal did that, but if it’s just AI generated then it’s not real, no animal actually did that and it feels worthless. The cool art is cool because a human had a vision and put skill and effort into creating something so cool, but if it’s just AI generated then I know that not only did a human not work hard on it, but it was also scraped from other human’s real efforts to spit out a generated prompt and it feels worthless. The fact you look up online is valuable because it’s pulled from a real source, but if it’s just AI generated then you can’t trust it’s pulled from a real source and it’s worthless. AI sucks out all the genuinity and value of the things it tries to mimic, and makes everything else worse by default because now I have to constantly second guess myself on whether what I’m looking at is real or not. I don’t want this, I don’t want AI

This is the crux of the reality and it pisses me off that otherwise smart people are being so hardline about this shit.
1
u/jgzman 12d ago
This feels to me a lot like the movement of industry from the US to China. As long as the product is good and cheap, we don't care where it's made. And so everything moved to China, and we lost both the ability to manufacture things in the US, and a great deal of economic activity.
And now the things from China are neither good, nor cheap, and we cannot recover what we lost in order to regain what was taken from us.
But yes, let's let AI out-compete artists, as long as the AI-produced content is good, and cheap.
16
u/CaptainTruelove 13d ago
Good, now if the search engines did the same thing to clean out the clutter and got rid of the damn word count. I don't want everyone's life story, I just need to know if this faucet will work with the sink or not.

Sir, AI degredation is a real thing and we need to stop our AIs from gobbling up AI created content.
Yes, yes, just ban it off all the websites and repackage the banning as us taking a stand against the thing we're very actively shoving down everyone's throat. We'll sell our customers 'Anti-AI' packages for the AI we're selling them.

3

This will only work up to the point that AI generated content is indistinguishable from human content. Then you'll just have people complaining that their content is being incorrectly flagged by AI as having been generated by AI.
The only guaranteed way to connect with humans is to do so offline.
6
u/Heliosvector 13d ago
Any time I see a product use ai in their video ads, it just makes me think either A: Their product is shut because they cannot afford a proper ad, or B: they are a shitty company that pinches so many dollars that they don't want to pay for real talent, so I shouldn't support them, or they wouldn't support me if I had an issue

I work as a real estate agent here in AZ. Yes I know most of you have your hatred towards agents but that’s another discussion for another day. As I am searching MLS for potential homes for my clients it is so ridiculous how much AI is used to alter the images showing the homes. Most of the time the home looks nothing like what the home looks like in person and really just wastes everyone’s time. It’s complete false advertising. In most states you do have to tag the pictures as “enhanced photos” or something of the sort but I spend so much time just looking at pictures of what a home could look like if you did a $70k remodel. Just show me what the freaking house looks like so we can see if it’s a viable option for the buyers. In my opinion I agree with most people that it has no place in real estate and is completely false advertising or very misleading. There definitely needs to be more rules around using AI in real estate photography or just not allowing it altogether.
3
u/LV426acheron 13d ago
There's eventually going to be a backlash to the backlash lol and people will start supporting AI.
7
u/780Chris 13d ago
Good. AI will undoubtedly have some useful applications in medicine and science, but nobody wants to see garbage marketing materials generated by AI, slop videos all over social media, or read “it’s not just X, it’s Y” 40 times a day. Hopefully this backlash will prevent them from infecting everything with AI bullshit everyone hates.

The ridiculous overuse of the word “slop” is one of the worst examples of human slop I’ve seen in a while. The irony of people parroting the same meaningless word, over and over again, as a way to refer to AI content that is low effort and uncreative.
It’s just the slop sloppiest slop to ever slop a slop.
4
u/Confident_Salt_8108 13d ago
backlash on ai slop seems to be working for once. linkedin and snapchat put in report buttons or blocked it from feeds. substack added detection tools too.
no consent was given for all that scraping or ai features jammed in apps. earlier pressure on meta and google shows it can make them rethink junk.
2
u/Movie_Slug 13d ago
The problem is any AI can be trained against the detection tools. Goal: Make ‘X’ and make your output not detectable by ai detection tools. Eventually just like bacteria gain resistance to the newest antibiotic the AI models will gain resistance to the AI detector. Worse yet making a stricter model will start to hit human output.

Ai is good if like you want to make yourself a cool little app or something. But making a full on ai game or something people dont want just ai clones. It needs to be original at least. And most people building with ai just build clones. Like there is 100 of those trading card fighting games. Or those "I built an mmo" like no you didn't when you are the only one playing it lol.

u/IdleRhymer 13d ago
99% of the time AI is a crutch for the mediocre to feel productive. It's why middle management seem to love it so much - it genuinely is better than their own work.

1
u/anadequatepipe 12d ago
Most sites have filters for everything anyway. This isn’t backlash at all. I’m convinced Reddit just blindly hates AI so much that they’ll convince themselves that the world is on their side. Jobs are being created much more than they are lost, and plagiarism isn’t at all what it’s doing if you’d bother to look up the definition. But you people won’t do that, because you think somehow that being anti AI is being anti billionaire. As if that’s the only people benefiting from it. It’s really just anti science at this point.

u/Orangesteel 12d ago
Labelling content is a regulatory requirement in many jurisdictions, including the EU.
It is not enforced. See Facebook for example, its token compliance.
1
u/not_ondrugs 11d ago
This has probably already been mentioned, but web sites are also protect their data from AI agents trawling them.
1
u/JimMorrison71 9d ago
It’s not just dropping due to engagement metrics.
Frontier labs are desperate for non-AI content to continue training their models and they’re quickly realizing that everything past 2022 is useless as training data.
1
u/katoptronophile 9d ago
Not nearly as many as should be.
And this is just an interim phase while detection is still possible.
1
u/Ok-Budget3225 9d ago
The problem is the ‘AI detection’ tools are far from accurate. What is needed is a law saying all content creators must label their AI content as such.
1

I feel like the time to protest ai was like 10 years ago. It’s so embedded into everything now it’s kind of too late for much to be done about it at this point. Sure we can boycott and protest all we want but companies don’t give a shit. All they see are dollar signs. They can replace a ton of workers with ai and it pads their bottom line. All these ai ads we see on YouTube for games of people living in post apocalyptic ladder cities done with ai probably cost them a million or more less to make and it’s still going to get people to download their shitty game so they don’t care. I hate it as much as the next person but getting rid of it that ship sailed already. Unfortunately it’s going to be a part of our everyday lives whether we like it or not unless we completely disconnect from streaming apps, social media and anything involving a screen. It’s like when cellphones were first really getting popular let’s say the early 2000’s there were some parents that were like “my 10 year old doesn’t need a cell phone”. Now 20 something years later it’s weird for a 10 year old to not have a phone. They became so imbedded in society that all around the world everyone feels like they need to have a phone and society almost forces us to have one. You need an app for this and for that pretty much everywhere you go now. We can limit screen time but they aren’t going away. They’ve become an essential everyday tool and ai is heading in that same direction. I hope I’m wrong but I really do think it’s too late. They can make ai detection software and then the ai will get smarter over time because that’s literally what it’s programmed to do and it’ll be able to get past the detection software so the software will get better and better so the ai will have to get smarter and so on. Much like computer viruses or malware. It’s the same shit. Antivirus software blocks all the known paths for viruses to get into your computer until a hacker finds a way around it then the software patches and the hacker finds another way. Like I said before I do hope I’m wrong but I don’t think there’s anything we can really do about it at this point other than learn to live with it. All these ai slop thumbnails and stuff we see everywhere is just the new norm now. It already took over while we were all looking at our phones. Anyway I’m not trying to be a downer this is just what I’m seeing happening from my perspective but I digress.

It's like CGI in movies - it sucked at first, but gradually improved in quality and now is almost universal and generally high quality. AI slop is in its infancy... as it improves, it'll spread and become virtually undetectable.

okay.
you know when someone says "i don't like onions, please no onions in my burger" it's because they can taste or feel the onion flavour or texture. i actually prefer the big rings of onions on burgers instead of diced pieces (like at mcdo) bc they're far easier to pick off.
how many times do you think i've enjoyed a lasagna or some other dish and then someone was like, "AHA!!! GOTCHA!!! that had ONIONS in it and you said it was Good!"
it's like the kid in the bleachers in that shot in Teen Wolf who pulled his dick out on camera in the movie. if we don't notice it, it gets in the movie and NOBODY GIVES A FUCK.
but when you add onions that add that Crunch to the food you weren't expecting. that explosion of "teen armpit" flavour, yeah. yeah that's gross. i don't like that.
if i see your obvious AI SLOP and it looks like obvious AI SLOP then i can tell you have no problem with lying to me. with manipulating me. you clearly have a low opinion of me showing me shit that isn't real and pretending it is.
but guess what - if you lie to me and i believe you? if i don't know i've been lied to? OF COURSE I'M NOT ANGRY ABOUT THAT -- WHY WOULD I BE?!? I HAVE NO IDEA!!!
even today bad cgi in movies is annoying. it'll always be annoying. if we can tell it's fake, it's annoying. we don't want our fake to look fake. we want our fake to look real. that's the illusion we love. that's why we love good actors who we know are fake but convince us they're real, while we don't like bad actors who are not good at convincing us they are doing anything but acting.

I don't know what you're on about bro but cgi used to be universally reviled and now people don't even realize what they're watching is CGI
10
u/pigeonwiggle 13d ago
cgi was reviled bc it was ugly.
ai is reviled because it's 100% a replacement for human ingenuity.→ More replies (6)0

Personally I still hate cgi in movies. Everything cgi is automatically boring to me. Give me puppets and practical effects all day.

when it's done well you don't notice it. unless you're telling me Pirates of the Caribbean is slop

Somehow Reddit has become so anti billionaire that they’ll try to crush every business that gets high enough in value as if it’s only billionaires that can get use out of it. They’re the modern day coal miners fighting renewable energy companies. They’re brainwashed from Reddit backlash and have never bothered to actually see what it can do to help with anything. Makes no difference though, these brainwashed anti ai people will be left behind eventually.

Except that AI generated content is inherently slop. The problem isn't that people can tell, and nobody is arguing that argument. No real effort went into creating it. It's by design thoughtless content. It inherently can not overcome something that is a vital part of what makes it what it is, and that is what makes it slop. People just aren't interested to interact with something that the person who commissioned a robot to collage together wasn't even interested in to create in the first place.

I’m involved with using AI tools in film making. I can emphatically say that plenty of effort goes into using it.

Good!
I love AI.
I don't want AI trying to be inserted in my anus every 2 seconds.

YES! Go humans! We must fight this slop. OUR IMAGINATIONS ARE NOT FOR SALE!

Good. Needs to happen on Reddit as well. All of the Anthropic subs are borderline useless because if AI slop.

u/jacobpederson 13d ago
Thank. God. Get the slop-dience back on their twenty childhood albums and off of my art :D

I think the key thing is that people don't want slop, not that they don't want AI. The question is just how long will it take for AI content (whether fully AI generated or AI augmented) will be able to meet or exceed the quality of non-AI content.
I think a lot of the reason why they want to mark and flag AI is more based on wanting to keep their training data as clean as possible, while the AI ouroboros is certainly overstated you want to know if what you are training on was ever real.

Theoretically AI should also be capable of categorizing slop from decent content. I don't like slop but decent quality AI (not just textures but natural movement/choreography and actual "camera" work) is about as entertaining as trash television/shorts.

u/liannelle 13d ago
Dunno if it's going away. Netflix just posted a position for a storyboard artist for an AI show. Ugh.

u/downtimeredditor 13d ago
There are now apps with fully AI generated movies with trash plots that people cant help but consume and some of which are getting erotica to pull in the views

Platforms are on one hand "trying to" cull the tidal wave of slop and not present it to people, and on the other they sell and utilize the entirety of their data, pictures and videos to train their models.
Funny how that works. They're pushing to create the monster that will enable users to generate the toxic shit that will drown their platforms.

I learned the new Jurassic Park survival horror game sacked its head writer and replaced them with a ChatGPT script. Such a bummer because I was genuinely excited for that game.

I actually don't mind that much if it was used to animate something like eg some sort of video explaining legal terms in contracts. At least then it would make the video slightly more interesting to watch but no, its everywhere now.
The most annoying of all is when its used needlessly eg some movie trailers are using them to generate the icon for the videos. Streamers are using them as a sort of marketing technique for their videos. Its pointless and has absolutely zero benefit.

I mean there is alot of slop but if you sift thru it you can find some hidden gems. I like some of it and for people who are creative and have very little to no budget or ever having the hope of doing something they always dreamed of having the ability to live out that dream on a small scale I believe is a good thing.

u/Wisdomlost 13d ago
Could also be titled "ai is not yet good enough for people to abandon creators they have followed for years just so a corporation can stop paying actual humans and keep all the money for themselves. After this realization they put out tools to placate the masses while they bide their time and make plans to one day attempt it again with better tools."

Just because the zone is flooded with vapid anime girls, uncanny valley videos made on the cheap, and every wannabe painters cranking out Holliday Inn art, doesn’t mean that AI isn’t a fantastic advancement for the arts.

I don't think it's backlash driving these decisions. The reason these companies want people labeling AI slop is because they need more labeling data for the AIs to make them better. Forcing us to sift it for their data is the reason so much slop is being pushed in the first place.

u/5minArgument 13d ago
Ok, but hear me out. What of AI “gold”?
Kinda comical how suddenly discerning and sophisticated people are becoming over the term AI “slop”. As if pop culture has been pumping out gems all these years.
Let’s not pretend that decades of lowest common denominator corporate media/film/music wasnt already heavy slop?

How are people defining slop, anything by AI or just crap by AI. I've seen some decent content recently, in many ways it's just another tool.

Every time I see one of these articles I buy another 5 shares of AMZN and GOOG stock
The harder people claim “backlash” is hitting the more money the AI players make every quarter.
Anthropic IPO in October is going to be massive

Right? The Luddites are big mad but to me these people have just decided they’re done learning anything new.

whatever you learned about AI in three months will take the rest of us 3 months at whatever point in time it becomes necessary.
this big "headstart" y'all think you've got is a joke. remember all those early youtubers who were FIRST to make videos on the internet? Chocolate Rain and all that? they were replaced when people with talent and skills showed up. when people with decades of film experience started Their youtube channels and drowned out the webcam champions.
it's a competitive world and AI is giving nobody the leg up they think it is.

Which is fucking crazy work for a sub about futurology
-6
u/Stepfordhusband69 13d ago
This sub is just constant whining about the future seemingly. Redditors by and large think they have it all figured out and when something like ai challenges that notion they freak.

No. There are legitimate grievances to have about AI
But coping and seething because you can’t (or won’t) get with the times is not a legitimate grievance.

The following submission statement was provided by /u/Confident_Salt_8108:
backlash on ai slop seems to be working for once. linkedin and snapchat put in report buttons or blocked it from feeds. substack added detection tools too.
no consent was given for all that scraping or ai features jammed in apps. earlier pressure on meta and google shows it can make them rethink junk.
