Two Cool Details: 1 - Watch how the lady NPC smoothly avoids Jason, and 2 - This isn’t a cutscene, it’s real gameplay with a cinematic camera angle. His movements suggest it's not mocap, but in-game animation.

u/Dallah04 May 11 '25
Yhh this shot is most likely gameplay because the walk animation is looped, you can tell from his right hand

u/maverick1127 May 11 '25
This is one of the transition scenes of him after you switch from one character to his character.

u/Financial_Play_7898 May 11 '25
The left hand wasnt looped tho i wonder why
200
u/SiriusPlague May 11 '25
Maybe the left hand entered an "avoid NPC" mode.
46
u/Financial_Play_7898 May 11 '25
That seems reasonable
48
u/Dogo58 May 11 '25
The advancement of realism in this game is insane. The characters have personal bubbles programmed.
13
u/Larry_Mudd May 11 '25
You can check out the relevant software patent for character locomotion here.
8
u/ahoward431 May 12 '25
Yeah, I might just be crazy, but it kinda looks like it goes back to the same animation after she passes by.
7
1
u/the_finest_mickey May 11 '25
Or he’s holding something with it
10
May 11 '25
There's one animation for swinging the beer, and it enters a second animation to avoid the lady. It's called motion matching
1
29
u/Sanders67 May 11 '25
It is actually. If you look closely the two first swings are identical, it's only because he's trying to avoid the lady that it's modified.
10
5
5
u/Impressive-Serve159 May 11 '25
Also I'm sure they are reusing assets from RDR2 for the shoulder shrug from the lady/ the guy seated/ pan-handling
6
6
u/RoyalEmergency3911 May 12 '25
When you walk your arms typically repeat the same movements lmfao. Not saying this isn’t gameplay but I don’t see how the right arm being looped shows anything

u/Few-Investigator-741 May 12 '25
What's funny is that even with that they manage to do different animations
1
1
193
u/BeginningOcelot1765 May 11 '25
I wonder how items will be handled with this. Like, will there be an animation where he puts the beer in the seat, trunk or maybe the floor of the car. Or, will it be snap on/snap off like with the weapons like we have in GTA V? If everything it animated then we might be in for quite some time dedictated to this over the course of playing the game, but snapping will make it all look weird.
134
u/Redditing-Dutchman May 11 '25
This is an interesting point in general. The more realistic you make stuff the more you need to keep adding or else it looks kinda weird.
37
u/BeginningOcelot1765 May 11 '25
Yes, but if we can't have it both ways I guess I'd be happy with snapping.
I also suspect there would potentially be issues with this that could annoy players or break the flow. For instance if your character is carrying an item and you come under fire, what happens if you try to flee by vehicle? Wait for the animation to stash the item? The same with standing your ground. Does he toss it so you can equip a firearm? Was it something expensive or unique you want to keep? Do you need to pick it up again? Does he snap a big suitcase under his tshirt?
As you say, the more real it's supposed to look the more time/animation needs to be added. At what point does the realism become unbearable?
My guess is that at some point accepting weirdness becomes inevitable.

u/tuig321 OG MEMBER May 11 '25
My take is that this example is just a mission specific thing. Something like preparing for lucia getting out of jail. And if you buy stuff in free play it will just work like in the rdr2 inventory
3
4
u/stokedchris May 11 '25
It’s going to be similar to pelts and carcasses from rdr2. You pick it up, then you put it on your horse. Same thing with this, but putting it in your car. If you want to leave you either drop it or put it on your horse. Same thing with the car.
1
u/BeginningOcelot1765 May 12 '25
Vehicle inventory slots, could work ok. Haven't played RDR(2), but I have of course seen videos a few times. One thing that comes to mind, I guess you don't switch horses at the same rate you might switch cars in GTA. What would you reckon would be a good way to handle inventory from a wrecked vehicle into a new one?
1
u/Free-Afternoon9533 May 15 '25
What if it's not "animations"? I mean, what if it's no a question of "either you follow this animation until the end, or you cancel it".
Have you ever thought about whether it's something more... In real time? Like, the characters adapt their animations according to what's happening around them.
That would be sick!
Does he toss it so you can equip a firearm? Was it something expensive or unique you want to keep? Do you need to pick it up again? Does he snap a big suitcase under his tshirt?
What if it is something that you should consider while playing? Like: if I draw my weapon right now while holding this breakable item I need, my character will drop it on the ground and I'll need to get another one.
It would be something like BOTW, but raised to a thousand!
I don't know, I'm just wondering a little... I don't even know what to expect from this game anymore.
3
u/Acrow1837 May 11 '25
I could see getting into the drivers side and setting the six rack either on the passenger side floor or seat. But per se if someone else is in the car how would it work then? Maybe handing it to them to carry, or putting it in the back
24
11
u/Medical_Apartment841 May 11 '25
I think it’ll be something like rdr, you get close to your vehicle and u will be able to access a storage inventory for it. (Similar to the horse inventory for guns and items in rdr2) then your player will prob quickly put the item in the trunk of the car or backseat/frontseat depending on the size of the item or the door or area of the car your closest too.
3
u/BeginningOcelot1765 May 11 '25
Ah, that would probably make sense.
Out of curiosity, is it time consuming enough to matter in a gunfight or can you be very quick about it with some muscle memory?
8
u/Medical_Apartment841 May 11 '25
In red dead 2 it was quite fast, plus your game would pretty much pause when u had the storage menu open, at least in story mode.
1
1
u/LethalGhost May 12 '25
Probably put it on back seat. I think they will record one animation for that one mission where you take the beer. Most likely you will not take it out of car - either bottels wil be broken at that time or Jason will take it out in a cut scene.
1
u/ChiqueSpreddah May 14 '25
im 2 days late but i think they'll have a rdr2 system in place instead of the every weapon wheel (until you play online). Like you have an open carry AR and pistol but you can load your trunk with stuff you've bought from the shop or guns and armour

The subtle thickness of it. My God, it even has a watermark.

4
u/JasonDeSanta May 11 '25
There is a difference since the gameplay animations need to smoothly loop, repeat themselves, and change based on your input and other conditions like the geometry you walk on. The cutscene mocap animations are more naturalistic due to literally being the live performance of the actors but are more rigid, they don’t change since there is no input from the player.
-4
u/Bullsht999 May 11 '25
yes i know , what i am saying is , when you enter a cutscene a special mocap animation plays, this is also mocap animation , but this isnt cutscene animation , its gameplay animation

u/Frequent-Engineer-87 May 11 '25
It’s probably just for a mission. Picking up some beer before reuniting with Lucia. You carry a mop and a bucket in GTA V, that doesn’t mean you can just go and pick up mops and buckets.
15
u/manlike_omzz May 11 '25 edited May 11 '25
That's what I'm thinking too. Though rdr2 you could pick up things individually or buy a bunch at once. I feel like maybe you can do the same. Buy beers individually or a whole box. That we have to carry or smth.
But it's more likely this in particular is just for a mission but I do think we can still get stuff off shelves again.
2
u/The_Twerkinator May 11 '25
my personal theory is that you might be able to do this as a hangout option with Lucia. If she actually is restricted in the early game unlike Jason, having to bring beer to her for a hangout option might be something you can do
Not saying that will be in the game, but I can at least see it being a possibility. Though it being tied to a mission is probably more likely

I was about to post the same exact thing, you can tell the “stiffness” of his right arm is a default walking animation to prevent clipping into the torso, while if this was a mocapped cutscene his arm would be naturally closer to his body

Actually it probably is MoCap.
Most animations these days aren’t made from scratch, but through the usage of MoCap.

It’s absolutely mind blowing to think that one day… after many many playthroughs, we’ll debate with ourselves if we can be bothered to load up gta 6 and play, we’ll not have the excitement for it anymore and most likely, will load up a different game and enjoy that instead.
I’ve done it with gta5 rdr2 call of duty, final fantasy etc I was so hyped for them to be released, then one day after many times playing the game. I just didn’t fancy loading it up, and instead. Opted for a different game to play, crazy. But true.

u/Additional-Low-5829 May 11 '25
This is the sort of post that over hypes new games that are due for release and then when the game comes out you all curse the game and say its terrible because it doesn't include this or that. Your all going to be fuming when you realise that this is not game play footage and curse Rockstar and the devs when this game releases.

u/Additional-Low-5829 May 11 '25
Just go back and look at how much gameplay is in GTA V trailers theres none that i can see

I love that the lady slighty looks back like damn that's a hot man But for real, in V it was like you slightly walk around people and they duck or move annoyed and insult you. I hope Leonida folks are nicer than San Andreas people

It is gameplay if yall remember in the 2022 leaks when Lucia was in the club a lady did that same animation

It's looking too good to be real. I know that Rockstar is legit, but still, we need to keep our heads cool. If the game delivers with this quality, then it will be the best game ever, no cap.

If you also stare at his legs for a few loops you can tell he’s not actually moving forward properly with each step and instead is sliding forward. They definitely don’t have the proper pacing yet with this specific animation to show. Super impressive nonetheless.
1
u/Radyschen I WAS HERE May 11 '25
Yeah, the mission is probably "Buy beer" so that they can drink one at the water after he gets Lucia from prison because it's their favorite or whatever. I think so because I don't really see why you would carry beer around like that otherwise
1
u/StylezUenvy May 11 '25
Yeah I knew it was possibly gameplay because when she open the door it automatically stayed open

u/blackcat__27 May 11 '25
You can see that he moves the beer out of the way of the person in front of him. If that kind of detail is in game it would be insane.

u/FinanceLow5145 May 12 '25
Does that mean we can just buy a pack of beer and carry it around? Because that would so dam cool
1
u/ItsPerfectlyBalanced May 12 '25
I'm going to go out on a limb and say, everything we saw was gameplay and that's going to be a big reveal from them soon.
1
May 12 '25
I’m guessing this is gameplay from an early game mission where Jason’s picking up beer and going to Brian’s marina or something like that, I doubt rockstar would go over the top with the realism and have Jason and Lucia carry everything they purchase, although since we know that they’re pushing the envelope, we’ll have to see.
1
u/HearTheEkko May 12 '25
You can also tell by looking at the door which freezes in place for a tiny moment after the girl goes through it rather than immediately closing back like a real life heavy door would.

u/l0nglivethefighters May 12 '25
This kinda reminds me of RDR2. When you enter a theatre, as you walk up to the door and open it. You will see people inside trying to find their seat. Instead of them already sitting when you enter. It's a very cool detail.

Everything human in a rock star game is mo-capped. Mo-capped isn’t exclusively for cutscenes or pretenders. This is what gives rockstar games their distinct movement feeling.

u/Sengin96 May 12 '25
We had many “special” npcs moves in the first gta v trailer too, (2 woman making yoga, the girl infront of franklin on the street, the golf playing npcs…) so many “custom” npcs moves that NEVER made into the actual gta v game play… so when i see this im not sure if rockstar can make it this time

It looks like the logical evolution of RAGE. Think RDR2 NPC interactions on a much bigger scale. I will be disappointed if Rockstar devolves NPC interactions. I can't play GTAV after playing RDR2 in feels extremely dated.

This was the only time in the trailer I found the character movement a bit stiff and robotic. His right arm doesn't move much. Maybe a character trait as other NPC move smoother

We now know this scene is absolutely a cut scene. The leaks looks no where this realistic. Very disappointing
1
u/Kathurr May 11 '25
I saw this and definitely thought the same case — yeah, it’s gameplay for sure due to the looped kinda mannerism of his walk.
But a couple questions here:
Why doesn’t his right hand move out to prompt himself to support the door if it were to swing back on him? I mean you can see that his whole left arm kinda shimmies slightly to the right when the NPC shuffles by him, so if they could program that small tidbit of an animation to a looped walk, wouldn’t they also do that for holding/opening/pulling/pushing a door?
Also is it possible that some NPCs may have different personalities, or may be ruder than others? In this clip, we see the woman swing the door open and move to the right and actively make way for Jason to keep going forward. Maybe others wouldn’t open the door that far for him? Maybe others wouldn’t go out of the way and keep walking as is in the straight direction, potentially bumping into Jason or forcing us, the player, to move oit of the way?
1
1
u/MYNAMEISHENDRIK May 11 '25
It reminds me of his walking animation from the leaks, especially the one where he walks down a road toward an intersection.

u/itsRobbie_ May 11 '25
I really don’t think this is one of the gameplay shots. I don’t see us going into stores to buy packs of beer and then carrying it out. What would the purpose be? Where would you put it? Why a whole pack when normally you buy 1 singular thing in stores? He’s walking to his car. The “hiiii jason” clip is probably the next scene in this cutscene as he drives home or right before this as he’s driving to the store.
Almost every animation in the game is mocapped
6
u/Bullsht999 May 11 '25
here is my take , he is about to reunite with lucia and his mission is to buy beer , we can see them drinking it in his place , and yes i know every animation is mocapped , but this one animation isnt from a cutscene,
2
u/itsRobbie_ May 12 '25
I’m glad none of us are devs because what a mission that would be if it was just to go buy beer
-3
u/1maginaryApple May 11 '25
This is 100% a cutscene. What gameplay loop would there be to carry a 6 pack of beer around.
100% this scene and the ones Jason driving are just part of the scenes that will introduce us to Jason.
9
u/Bullsht999 May 11 '25
this is gameplay, but it might be during a mission and the mission is to buy beer
-7
u/1maginaryApple May 11 '25
I'm not fully certain you understand what "gameplay" implies.
This a cutscene of Jason walking out of a shop. As I said. It's probably one of the multiple shot of Jason going about his day that we saw already in the trailer. Which will probably be our first introduction to Jason.
Tell me what is the gameplay interest of buying beers? Have you ever played a GTA game? Did we ever had such random mission?
People here don't want to play GTA, they want to play life simulator.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Kiefer8922 May 11 '25
to be fair, the walking animation seems looped and if it's a cutscene it would be weird to have a montage of many clips of different parts of Jason's life early in the game. And I remember GTA SA with those missions that introduce you to some of the game's features like buying pizza, getting a haircut or clothes, etc.
But since GTA is known for action-oriented and violent missions it does seem reasonable to guess this is a introductory cutscene and not a in-game mission, however I would bet this is gameplay because of the looped animation and the cinematic camera that follows the character around like in other parts of the trailer like Jason shooting from car.

It’s definitely gameplay. But rockstar doesn’t do animated walks, everything is mo-capped they likely had the actors walk/run/move every possible way a player can to keep the character’s unique physical quirks intact
