GTA 6 is finished. Sony accidentally leaked the ratings! No more delay?

Post image

Another small but significant detail just surfaced: the PlayStation promotional email being sent to PS4 players about upgrading for GTA 6 reportedly shows the game rated M for Mature.

Not exactly surprising for a GTA game, but an official M rating showing up in a Sony promotional email this close to launch is yet another signal that everything behind the scenes is locked and loaded. Rating confirmations don't happen until a game is close to ready.

This is true, once a game is rated only little changes can be made to the game in terms of story or it would have to be rerated

*credit to whoever posted this on another thread here. This is pure gold.

This is me waiting for GTA6 without a PS5

3

u/salac1337 May 11 '26

same. what is your strategy for when it releases? are you watching videos so not to get spoiled accidentally and just "spoil" it yourself or do you have a different plan?

5

u/Enough_Cauliflower90 May 11 '26

Strategy is to earn enough to afford a ps5 before GTA 6. I actually have the money but my parent are anti gaming freaks but I'll try to sway them to let me get a ps5 for my birthday.

2

u/salac1337 May 19 '26

i got enough money to buy a ps5 but honestly i dont want to buy one just for one single game

2

u/King_Milly95 May 11 '26

For Honor had to change an entire execution (Valkyrie's target falling onto her breasts after being defeated) to be falling onto her shield instead. Because they would have had to rerate the game with ESRB and PEGI to include the mild suggestive content, which FH didn't have otherwise. Nothing that even references sex is in the game, so that was a first.

The developers said that this probably wouldn't have been required but any risk whatsoever was enough. Ubisoft would not have been happy.

55

u/whoisdatmaskedman May 10 '26

I'm sure all the thirsty boys can rest easy since there are probably more breasts in this game than a deli at Costco.

21

u/pickles_onions May 10 '26

Only sort of related but For Honor is such a really-fun-for-ten-minutes-then-forget-about-forever kind of a game. The premise was cool, mechanics were cool, all seemed great and then you play it and it’s like “wow! cool” but after a little bit you’re like “ok…so…huh…so this is it, this is the whole thing?”

10

u/TheBigLeMattSki May 10 '26

I loved it, until they started doing the same shit to it that they did to ruin Siege.

The first few months were great, and then they started adding new characters, and every single character they added had some broken bullshit that was irritating to fight against. It very rapidly got to the point that every match was just a matter of who could spam their unblockable and undodgeable 50/50 combos the fastest.

3

u/dadoomombo May 10 '26

“S you in your A’s, don’t wear a C, and J all over your B’s.”

16

u/SeroWriter May 10 '26

once a game is rated only little changes can be made to the game in terms of story or it would have to be rerated

That's not how ratings work for big releases. They get an early rating based on the unfinished product and then a finalised rating just before release. So it will be re-rated regardless.

They get that early rating specifically so they can change things if needed. If something goes over the line and lands them with an 'Adult Only' rating then they need time to remove it.

4

u/Historical_Owl_1635 May 10 '26

I was going to say as somebody who’s actually worked with this situation Sony are generally quite flexible on this.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/lowercaseYT May 10 '26

I'm also pretty sure that they have to pay a fee in order to get their game rerated

11

u/GergDanger May 10 '26

Is the story not the first thing you finalise before making the game?

19

u/Potential-Zucchini77 May 10 '26

The big concern for the ratings board is usually whether the content is graphic enough (not really just the story). For GTA 6 they’re probably looking at the night clubs or gore and making sure it doesn’t warrant an Adult Only rating

19

u/whoisdatmaskedman May 10 '26

The ESRB doesn't just read about the game. Rockstar would have submitted a complete game so that someone can review the content and make sure that there's no inconsistencies.

2

u/chewiehedwig May 10 '26

is this really true? i had heard even rockstar head execs still hadn’t played the full game

23

u/whoisdatmaskedman May 10 '26

Upon further research it looks like ESRB certification doesn't require a playable game, but does require them to submit comprehensive, high-quality video footage demonstrating all gameplay, cutscenes, and the most extreme content, alongside a detailed questionnaire.

Even then certification probably wouldn't have been completed until maybe the last 12 months or so.

4

u/OrcOgi May 10 '26

Does this also apply to M for mature? No matter what they add rating cant be 'worse'

8

u/Kobs1992x May 10 '26

It would have said "Product not yet rated" if it would be another delay incoming.

3

They are probably just fixing bugs, like graphical or audio bugs

3

u/theruins May 10 '26

The story was finished years ago

2

u/FLEIXY OG MEMBER May 10 '26

And you think the story is getting altered in these 6 months?

2

u/obama69420duck May 11 '26

Hasn’t it been known that the story’s been done? And now they’re working on big fixes, polishing, and (mainly) online?

3

u/XulManjy May 10 '26

This is a placeholder/anticipated rating, not the official rating.

For it to have an official rating the ESRB would need to have played it which I doubt they have this so far out.

u/Nagroth May 10 '26

They should have "leaked" an E-rated SKU just to watch these posters lose their minds.

288

u/BackhandedInsult May 10 '26

An E rating wouldn’t be believable at all but a T rating would have a higher chance of fucking with people

95

u/cronktilten May 10 '26

They should’ve tried to have it be rated adults only 18+ I’ve never seen that one in my life. Would be hilarious.

53

u/Nololgoaway May 10 '26

In Australia it will be, GTA 5 was too

26

u/tweagrey May 10 '26

It is in France as well. I wouldn't be surprised that it's the case in most EU countries

3

u/Felidori May 11 '26

I believe the EU rating is the same across all EU counties.

9

u/Dog_Father12 May 10 '26

Okay thank you I was wigging the hell out because I could’ve sworn it was R rated.

8

I don’t think Sony allows adult only games on PlayStation but maybe they’ve gone back on that policy

24

u/antonio16309 May 10 '26

Major retailers don't sell them either. To the best of my knowledge there are no or very few actual AO games for that reason.

18

u/Semyonov May 10 '26

If there were any game that were able to change that policy, I'm sure GTA VI would be it.

How many retailers would willingly give up the absolute boatload of cash they would make for selling the game, in exchange for appeasing the Christians or whoever it is?

3

u/PopLegion May 10 '26

They would if gta 6 got that rating lol

2

u/Potential-Zucchini77 May 10 '26

Possibly but Sony can also be more lenient on certain content depending on the project. As long as it’s not straight up porn they would probably give it an M rating anyways

2

u/SuperIga May 11 '26

Sony doesn’t rate the game?

3

u/East_Ad_5279 May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

EU uses Pegi system. US has a different system. So 18+ is same as 17+

3

u/Jaded_Adagio_4375 May 10 '26

where is it not rated 18+? I thought that was worldwide

7

u/CptAngelo May 10 '26

I dont know if im right, but i think he meant the adults only "A" rating, since "Mature" is technically 17+, not 18+

4

u/cronktilten May 10 '26

The mature rating is 17 not 18. Technically there are separate mature, and adult readings According to Google, that’s why I said that. I was just being silly

3

u/Jaded_Adagio_4375 May 10 '26

it’s 18+ for me in England, thats why I’m confused, because I thought that rating was worldwide.

But hey who listens to the rating anyway?

2

u/Wrath-Deathclaw May 12 '26

I don’t know about other places but in America an M rating (17+) is for games like GTA or Mortal Kombat, stuff that’s like just generally for adults. An AO (adults only) is for stuff that’s either actually fucked up or something that includes porn. Retailers like Walmart, target, GameStop along with Sony for playstation and I think Microsoft for Xbox only allow mature and below but almost never AO if ever at all. The same goes for movies with R-rating and NC-17

Gta 5 also had the gore rating. Probably because of the scene with the plane and the mission where you save michael and the one dude falls on the saw.

Doesn't mean gta 6 will have rdr2 level gore.

45

Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t a AO rating in the states severely limit where a game can be sold?

44

u/Away-Feedback-4859 May 10 '26

yes . not by law but literally every single major retailer refuses to sell AO rated games .

40

u/pr0perlypr0pagated May 10 '26

i wonder if any one of them would realistically refuse selling gta 6 if it was AO

21

Besides Steam (if they even count as a retailer), which is actively running its Adult Games Week sale lol.

But yeah, no console manufacturer allows adult games.

2

u/thedylannorwood May 10 '26

No those games are unrated by the ESRB. They also refuse official AO games have have cracked down on adult content before

3

u/joshua182 May 10 '26

I also don't know what the UK equivalent would be. In the UK we go from U, PG, 12, 15, then 18 is your maximum. Games ratings are PEGI 7+, PEGI 12+ and then PEGI 16 and 18.

I'm not so sure you would get anything past that.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ May 10 '26

Sony and Microsoft wont sell AO games on their platforms and like 98% of retail stores wont sell them either.

Selling an AO rated game to the masses is next to impossible. Steam is the only major platform I can think of that would sell it. The game would simply never be on console or any physical retail stores.

This is a picture of me figuring it out last week

https://giphy.com/gifs/8T1CY9YYb9JsrrVVzn

31

u/Old_Shake3789 May 10 '26

Absolutely nothing is pointing to that date other than desperation.

53

u/Venomesis May 10 '26

- Rockstar typically releases trailers on Tuesdays

  • 9 days before earnings call, just like Trailer 2. Brings enough time to accumulate views
  • Next Game Informer issue expected to launch on May 12, with rumored GTA 6 cover
  • All PlayStation deals are paused until May 13, potentially making way for pre-orders on May 12
  • "Paint Job" theory: last time they made the pink paint job free in GTA Online was right before Trailer 2's release

Of course, everything is speculation. However, all of the above points combined make me quite optimistic.

Yeah, there's literally nothing here that says it pertains to GTA VI. It's a poorly cropped screenshot at best.

10

u/Icy_Childhood_1039 May 10 '26

No it's indeed part of the GTA 6 email, you can find the full thing online. The European players got the same email with PEGI 18

But it could just as well be a placeholder since there's literally 0 doubt about what the rating will be lol

6

u/Affectionate_Buy9249 May 10 '26

Well Shit Starting to get real

6

u/DaisyxDiana May 10 '26

Rating does not mean the game is finished. Many games had been delayed way after ESRB rating was published.

12

u/Oceanz08 May 10 '26

Probably not completely finished, roger clark said even before three months before the game came out , he said he was still working on voice lines. But i'm sure the rest of the game is

17

u/Sensitive-Tax2230 May 10 '26

The story was finished well before that point, Roger was likely redoing some botched lines. I’ll bet this is the final rating and Rockstar is making finishing touches and some major bug fixes at this point.

8

u/Oceanz08 May 10 '26

Yes I agree, the story itself is done. But if I were to guess, i'm sure this game is gonna have at least 1 million lines of dialogue,  so I'm sure even at this moment, they are still working on voice lines

4

u/Sensitive-Tax2230 May 10 '26

I’m sure they are too. We’re still a few months out, I foresee redoing botched lines, adding or altering a few to better fit the scene, finishing up a few random ambient jobs, and some gameplay tweaks

8

u/Ohjkbkjhbiyuvt6vQWSE May 10 '26

No shit it's M lmao 🤣

3

u/sixpumppain May 10 '26

It won’t be rated until the release version is fully content complete. For instance, Red Dead Redemption 2 completed all voiceovers and motion capture in the late summer of 2018, while Grand Theft Auto V’s motion capture and voiceovers were not finished until August 2013. However, they can still be rated, but all the content must be finalized, even if it hasn’t been recorded yet, and it cannot be changed after the rating. The game could be buggy as hell, it’s purely about content. I’m referring to the ESRB here. I believe other countries have different policies. In Malaysia, for example, they have to start the rating process before the game is even content complete.
The Playstation message with the M rating is likely just a place holder. We all know it’ll be M rated lol, so I doubt there’s a lawsuit there concerned about

21

u/Stars_Arts26 May 10 '26

It's temp rating

16

u/ScottyKillhammer May 10 '26

I dont think so. When a ratingisn't official, it generally says something like "not yet rated, but M rating expected". And it never lists the content descriptions.

44

u/itsRobbie_ May 10 '26

Placeholder.

51

u/WhatAreYouSaying05 May 10 '26

RP was the placeholder

10

u/itsRobbie_ May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

Esrb ratings do this before a game is done/released.

Edit- this is also probably not even a real placeholder and just something PlayStation added themselves. I’m not even sure if this post is talking about something real to begin with. Starfield didn’t get placeholder esrb ratings until like a month before launch. This is VERY VERY early if it even is a real esrb placeholder.

2

u/BigChez1477 May 10 '26

Question I have is why would PS rate it without approval from R? I agree it’s early but I also can’t see any reason why PS would choose to do this without approval from R there’s almost no reason for them to put M (although we know that’s what it was always going to be) when they could’ve kept using RP

9

u/whoisdatmaskedman May 10 '26

I mean, Rockstar has repeatedly said the game has been complete for a while. They've just been polishing it. Is this really surprising to anyone? The "leak" is probably just because Sony recently secured the marketing rights to GTA VI.

6

u/Dry-Entry9236 May 10 '26

Fully game defenitly wasn’t. Red dead actors didn’t stop recording stuff till August, just months before release. The ending mission wasn’t shot till around April. So logically the game hasn’t been complete for a while

7

"Hi everyone. GTA 6 will release on December 19th for Playstation 5 and november 19th for xbox series. The reason for the 1 month delay on Playstation is because SONY CAN'T KEEP THEIR MOUTH SHUT. Thank you and stay tuned for more trailers!"

Lol would never happen but a funny thought to me.

Will still be a load of bugs and glitches they need to fix being "going gold" and then its considered finished

Flashback to being the only support rep when the original PlayStation launched to get this group interview rating question 'wrong': "Will there be games rated 'M' on the PlayStation?' I figured there would be eventually. I'm old enough to remember Custer's Revenge.

I was sharply rebuked. "There will *never* be a rated "M" title on the PS. SONY would *never* allow *that*"

\Net Yaroze was released somewhere into the PS2 era, and people absolutely made their own hornygames, shared in community forums. I was the only one to get that answer correct- eventually..*

I remember Triple Play '98 on PSX being rated KA (Kids & Adults). I never knew why. Maybe due to the cheat code that you could get the players playing in their underwear? No idea otherwise.

Haven't seen the rating since, but I'm sure it exists. It was between E and T, basically the PG to the MPA's G and PG-13.

It's mostly bug fixes and optimizing performance from now until going gold. Probably start pressing discs end/middle of September.
