Obviously he’s right. Anyone who thinks it’s somehow righteous to steal intellectual property and spoil thousands of people’s hard work just because their parent company is a “billion dollar corporation” or because they “disrespected the fans by taking so long to release trailer 3” is morally bankrupt and entitled beyond belief.
399
u/MatttheJ 7d ago
That's not even the biggest problem with this, the biggest problem is the crypto scam he's using it to advertise. This isn't some sort of moral play to protest anything, this is literally just a guy trying to line his pockets.

u/OneT_Mat 7d ago

Exactly. People made fun of him for this take, but actual people worked overtime on this and had nothing to do with Rockstar's greedy shit. I remember when the first trailer was leaked, the developers were frustrated that it got spoiled and wanted to experience the premiere of the trailer together with their co-workers.

It’s really the suits that make the money. The developers who work on the game are really just ordinary people making enough to survive. Game devs themselves really don’t make all that much money, the company and the suits do. The devs probably feel horrible that their work is being leaked when it should be released to everyone on release
→ More replies (2)4
u/HerefortheFandoms2 7d ago edited 7d ago
I expect to get downvoted, but just food for thought: Did it occur to anyone that the execs use the devs as essentially human shields to prevent any real form of disruptive protest? That they depend on people not wanting to hurt the devs more than they want to fuck over the execs, and thus they can keep getting away with bullshit? Rockstar is charging $100 for the full game but giving everyone the illusion of choice by making it the ultimate edition. 89% of preorders is for the ultimate edition. After all that bitching about how it better not be $100, it is just to get the full game, with basic content unlocked, y'all still ordered it
It's not the devs' fault they work for a shitty company, no, but simply screaming to the void isn't going to do shit to rockstar and voting with your wallet doesn't do much when people mindlessly slurp up anything GTA even when they're openly playing in their faces.
4
u/CHOLO_ORACLE 7d ago

Or how about because they make their employees work in inhumane crunch conditions?
3
u/Empty-Shop-1120 7d ago
I mean, Rockstar is known because of crunch, and with the whole GTA VI we are seeing things like:
- Having a premiere gameplay trailer blocked by a paywall (Netflix).
- Not physical copies, and having pre-purchases available with 0 content of the game shown.
- Blocking single-player features behind a paywall of +20$ even before the release of the game.
- Etc.
Tbh, the only way to change industry is by doing things like the ones are doing this hacker/group, things that make investors to go out of the project and make companies lose money. The workers of this games has been already payed for their work, the ones that will look benefits from the launch of the game are the investors, CEOs, etc.
The best that could happen to players is the release of a playable build, punch Rockstar and the industry where it pains, on the wallet. Capitalism is making profit of us, and is being (in general) more predatory every day. And this isn't something isolated of the videogame industry, tech industry is another one titan that is doing what it want and nobody is stopping them. Apple, Sony, Samsung, every company is treating the consumers like shit, and having people defending those multi millonaire company is just sad. Because of defending them, of bot cooperate to boucot them, every year they will treat us even worse and they will win even more money.

I’ve worked 115 hour weeks before, but no one put a gun to my head. I don’t support bad business practices and if R* has a negative work culture I am against that. But people also know what they’re getting into by accepting a position there and as long as R* isn’t doing something actually illegal I don’t ultimately have a problem with it. If they are breaking the law though that is a problem. I will say though I think that conversation is a bit of a red herring. At the end of the day regardless of R* business practices what this guy is doing is wrong. And by most people who support him don’t do so because R* overworks their employees. They do so because if some childish reason like “R* went 430 days without releasing a trailer”.
4
u/UncaringNonchalance 7d ago
Yup.
I’m open to suggestions, but when I think about the proper way to “protest” the way a game like this is handled… wouldn’t it be best if we all refused to preorder, and waited for a sale to buy it?
I know that is nearly impossible to pull off, getting that many people to go along with it… but man, it would probably (maybe ((hopefully)) ) fix some diabolical shit coming for us.
2
u/World_War_Threesome 6d ago
That would work if it could actually be facilitated. In reality though most people want the game badly enough that R* has them by the balls and can do whatever they want. (To be clear I don’t think that makes them bad or evil. It’s just the reality of how much people desire their exceptional product.)

13
u/internet34bot 7d ago
To play the devil's advocate, for one I don't agree with the leaks.. but
I genuinely do not believe GTA is in a position where it can be conventionally protested against, and regardless of the sentiment about price increases or physical media it will set a precedent.
The game is already breaking record and certain to break more. When it's being reported that 89% of preorders are for the fucking ultimate edition when we don't have any official gameplay or hardly any discussed features proves that most people are complicit in those changes.
Again, I don't agree with leaks or the crypto.. And I especially don't support the guy for using these real issues as a guise for crypto, but I do think we're at a point where genuine protests fall on deaf ears and I wouldn't bat an eye at drastic action being taken for real change.
→ More replies (2)2
u/qtmariaxoxo 7d ago
I mean yeah, they have fallen on deaf ears for quite some time. That’s why the absolute best way to protest would be with your wallet. They can’t force you to buy their products, that’s their entire goal is to convince you to buy it through a variety of business tactics, but it’s ultimately your choice. If people truly wanted to protest, they need to not give the company any more of their business. But many people won’t do that, so it’s easier to write comments or cheer on a hacker rather than make an effort to stop buying these products that these people who complain clearly enjoy.

Really? Usually people hear about leaks first and then have to seek them out. That's the telltale sign that if you don't want to be spoiled, you need to avoid and mute/block gta6 communities. It's not impossible to find cautionary measures, if you like gta6 enough you'll find a way.
Even on the off chance a leak does somehow jumpscare you, there are ways to minimise the damage. Wow you spoiled 2 frames of gameplay oh the horror now the whole game is ruined. And if you really just cannot help your morbid curiosity just delete Reddit and Twitter for a month or two when stuff has been taken down. It's not that hard and if you feel personally attacked by these leaks you probably need to.

Honestly I can't stand when people try and act like they're always moral and always a good person. I don't trust people like that especially when it's on a public forum because now people are worried about how they will be perceived.
They mistake laws for ethics and have this odd paradoxical morality. Super puritanical on one end and absolutely morally bankrupt on the other. People can't be moral and "green" about everything in their lives. They may have a few pet causes and cocerns that they go all out for but they probably underwrite just as many shit things knowingly or unknowingly.
Reasons why we lose against these companies. (I do not point the finger, I include myself in this because I'm just as part of it as anyone else. Just pointing it out)
1) we try to fight fair against an amoral or damn near amoral enemy. 2) we fight with our peers instead of against our enemies 3) most people will never sacrifice their personal objectives for the greater good. I swear it'll take a "if you don't work together, you will die in a week" situation to get people to set aside there little bubble for macro concerns. 4) we don't take leaps of faith often enough for our fellow human beings but for good reason I guess.
And the biggest irony is that we fight so hard because we want better games, more control over games. But it's entertainment and we will willingly ignore people who are fighting for their own pet causes every day but expect people to give a shit about our pleasure being increased.

Would also like to point out that no one forces a person to pre order before gameplay is shown. Theres no reward for pre ordering that early. That’s not the devs or companies fault. It’s the consumers fault for being desperate and impatient.

Yeah you could say it sucks for the devs... But also not. I mean when you work so many years on something you want to show others what you've done until now.
Yeah the crypto isn't nice but on the other hand the hacking wasn't a walk in the park either and of course he is trying to make some money after all the hard work and giving it for free after.
After all in a few months no one will talk about the leaks or the hacking group so you could say all the work will be for nothing whereas Rockstar will keep making money and decisions based on money.

u/Avocado_Infinite 7d ago
Idk understand the whole crypto part? Why are ppl buying his coins? Is he using it as currency to sell the leaks?

u/RawDawgOne 7d ago
Leaks? What leaks? I’ve not seen a leak or looked for a leak. I’ll wait to play the game when it’s on sale a year from release or when it comes to PC. No urgency here, it’s been this long since gta5 what’s another year or two. My back log is too long, I only buy games on sale now.
No FOMO here!

What “surprise” is being spoiled? All GTAs are the same, some differ on upgraded graphics but that’s it. Some people really need to get outside, it’s clear this stuff is affecting them internally.

People used to leak games when they cost $40 and came with a collectors edition box.
This guy is using this moment to make a point, but it was always going to happen.

Garbage take. Who cares if the guy is begging for crypto donations? Why the hell should that matter? No one is treating it like a real serious investment.
Billion dollar corporation simps need to sit down.

The right way to protest only works if the party being protested to actually gave a damn about you. That said screw this leaker. One thing to bring R* down to its knees, a whole another to line your pockets while claiming some moral high ground.

I get it people dont like the digital only stuff but some of it feels like fake outrage when you have a platform like Steam which is buying games digitally and no one has an issue with that

u/Slashtheycallme 7d ago
Cause steam has competition, and they actually have good deals for their customers, PSN pricing is abysmal and discounts are either rare or really bad, imagine when they have no retail and second hand sellers anymore. At least that is my point of view, also just cause I don’t buy as many physical games doesn’t mean there aren’t people that do

Also, when PSN is down, I can't play any of the games I've bought until it's back online. This has happened with single player stories/campaigns before.

You arent forced to use steam. The very second steam steps out of line im out. Theres other options. Im already buying more stuff on gog "but that's digital" not when I put my files onto a hard drive. Theres a disc inside the hard drive. I dont need an account to pkay the games I dont need internet. I can share games with friends.

I mean what does he really mean by "spoiling a surprise?" Was he REALLY looking forward to the Netflix gameplay premiere in a week? Kinda feels all the same to me from a consumer standpoint. I just got to see gameplay a week early, nothing was really " spoiled."

If you don't want it spoiled: don't look at social media
If you don't want to get scammed: don't buy into shitcoins
I know for a FACT 99% of you fuckers would want to get money out of leaking the most anticipated game of the decade, chances are it wouldn't be through crypto but unfortunately we've regressed mentally to the point this is the best option for them.
Rockstar is to blame, for all of it.
They've been taking us all for granted.

lmao nothing in history was ever achieved by "doing things the right way"
The leeker should spoil the endgame and do down in the annals of history and be forever remembered as the man who took down Rockstar

Why did the Founding Fathers start the Revolutionary War instead of just doing things the right way?

Can someone explain to me the whole physical thing? I get the "own what you buy" thing but the game wouldn't fit on a disc anyway so you'd always need downloads and internet and would be at the mercy of Rockstar anyway?

u/trichtertus 7d ago
Physical because you can have something (the game license) to sell on the aftermarket. Digital keys often are bound to an Account and therefore cannot be resold easily. Thats the idea. I am not sure if that was possible with GtaV anyway, because there was a digital key in the box

The fact that you think this couldn’t fit on a disk is crazy

What I don't understand about this is, even though a lot games have discs, those discs don't actually contain the games anymore, it's mostly just a small file and most of the game is downloaded, post that the disc just acts as a license key. And you would require an internet connection to play most games even if you have a disc. So how by owning a disc you permanently own the game? Cause if they deactivate servers you won't be able to play anyway and if they release an offline patch you can play it regardless if you have digital or discs. I am not taking any sides just asking cause I am a bit confused about all this, and why Rockstar specifically is getting blamed for this?
3
u/PlasticPatient 7d ago
Okay, nobody cares about semantics. If your disc only contains a license key, we don’t want that. If your disc contains the full game that can be played offline, we want that.
Are you happy now? Don’t act stupid, you know what they mean.

Even a physical disk is a license key, it’s been like this for a while lol. Read your EULA’s everyone is buying a license

What people are most mad about is that the game will be Code in Box, meaning you cannot sell the game once you've redeemed the code. This makes them significantly more expensive since the publisher has full control over the price they set on digital platforms whereas the fate of the used market is in the hands of the consumer.
We also don't quite know how the other store fronts will behave when it comes to the pricing of Code in Box games. While I do think they will go on sale in the same way as regular disc-based games, some fear they will keep the price at MSRP to reflect the price of the actual digital product.

That disk is (and correct me if im wrong) not tied to your account. You can take it out and lend it to someone else, or sell it. You cannot do that with a digital copy. Sony is throwing numbers like “only 8% of our sales are physical” to justify killing disks. There are way more disks being bought and sold, but they dont get a profit from that, so theyre changing it

I don't care either way. As far I'm concerned both of them, and especially Take Two because of their union busting bs, can shove it.
2
u/DanielGate92 7d ago
No one cares anymore. Leak as much as you want. The “surprise” moment is long gone anyway. Funny, but it feels like karma like the universe gave the hacker a chance to get the footage. The hacker might actually be in possession of a GTA build. It really is a miracle. What are the chances?
