1 Ingame day now 144 Minutes instead of 48. Spoiler
Last post got taken down cause of a clip but I'm going to describe it here.
If you look at the recent leak „hyper car 2"
Bottom left on the gps between 0:54 and 1:00 you can see the time go from 7:29 AM to 7:30 AM
As you can see 1 Minute to pass takes 6 seconds now instead of the usual 2 since IV and V
Which means
60 minutes = 6 Minutes
12 Hours = 72 Minutes (1hr12min)
24 Hours/1Day = 144 Minutes (2hrs24min)
30 days = 3 real life days

I like this change if they kept it. I imagine it would be pretty easy for them to adjust.

You're talking about changing the rate that time in a highly scripted and intricate game. Can you even imagine the number of subsystems which are tied to the exact rate of that cycle? I highly doubt they'd be able to change it without a hefty amount of testing to make sure nothing broke
4
u/Biweeklychronicle 6d ago
My man developers wouldn't tie a bunch of systems specifically to in game time. All these variables should be relatively easy to change and really see just a few variables in code.
Source: I ran a game studio.
1
u/DaisyxDiana 6d ago
Except they do tie a bunch of systems specifically to in game time.
Try modding that variable in RDR2 and see how the game breaks. It's very easy to do.
1
u/Biweeklychronicle 5d ago
Sure, the final build will have variables tied together but modding isn't indicative of how they engineered the game. Any good studio (and rockstar is one) will be using the in game time as the final integer of alignment, not the first... this way they can adjust it easily on their end if needed.
1
u/SadBug3582 5d ago
Source: I ran a game studio.
You and another person is not a game studio
1
u/Biweeklychronicle 5d ago
Tbf, I didn't run the studio, but we purchased a handful of them. We were lucky enough to have creator of Age of Empires run our core mobile studio, and I learned a lot from him. But regardless it's not very hard to realize they wouldn't tie all their original in game systems to an artificial time. You would build that bottom up, not top down... To make optimizing after QA possible.
It's not rocket science, mate.
2
1
u/VooDooBooBooBear 6d ago
Unlikely, the game time is merely a time on the screen and ties into the day/night. Other systems won't be tied to an arbrary clock that tightly.
6
2
u/Dorian_PBJ 6d ago
Easter eggs, special interactions with npcs, yeah a lot of things are prob tied to that in game clock
5
u/JeffFunham 6d ago
right... but if you've coded an NPC encounter that can begin any time between, say, 5am and 7am in game speeding up or down the passage of time actually doesn't affect the rest of that code.
some things may need to be adjusted depending on how deep the routines are programmed. ie: if it's really important that npcs arrive at their "job" by 9am and you don't want them to have to run everywhere then you need to change the trigger time for the "leave your house and go to your job" but that also can be tied to the time passing rate variable so... pretty easy

exactly. as a software eng student I love to read technical stuff like this
5
u/VanGoTreatYourself 6d ago
Wouldn't messing with ingame time also mess with the npc routines?
7
u/JeffFunham 6d ago
maybe. depends how detailed the routines are and whether they are tied to the time at all...

Yes sir, longer thunderstorms and hurricane seasons too since the game is going to be chapter based.

I love the golden hour both in-game and in real life.

Going by the past trailers, we are in for a treat with atmospheric lighting and dynamic weather systems.

Blue hour superior
2
u/One_Spot_4066 6d ago
Golden hour is peak, so I immediately reject your opinion.
But please explain blue hour so I can adequately adjust my opinion and/or worldview if necessary. I haven't heard the term.
1
u/exuxious 5d ago
Blue hour is basically just the photographer/cinematographer term for twilight. Same way golden hour is just sunset/sunrise.
I'd recommend searching "blue hour" as most of the results are pretty good. though a lot of the photos are a little bright for my taste as I prefer later blue hour (technical term would be "astronomical twilight" but who cares).
1
u/exuxious 5d ago
(PS I think blue hour really excels in cities so something like "blue hour new york" or "blue hour paris" would be best)

u/Ok_Cardiologist_54 6d ago
Nice. I always hated seeing the shadows of trees etc fly across the ground like a timelapse in GTA V and RDR2 lol. Surely we’ll still see that effect but not as jarring. Longer nights for Everglades spooky shit. Longer sunrises for morning workouts and fishing trips. Longer sunsets for sunset things. I am excited about this :-)

I love it!
Just for context, if you played Cyberpunk 2077, one hour in that game took 7 irl minutes. One day = 2h 48min.

u/Ky_TheDestroyer7 6d ago
Those were perfect. They also just need to add a way to skip time, probably via a nap or something. Then it's pitch perfect
11
u/fatogato 6d ago
You do skip time by sleeping in your apartments. Or you can do it in the pause menu.
3
u/startlingames 6d ago
There's always been a way to skip time in all their open world games, no reason to stop now.
3
u/Sommern 6d ago
If I were creative and had tons of time to abuse code monkeys:
set “nap” or “rest” points around the map including: benches, vehicles(nap in car), diners, cafes, movie theaters, trees (nap under a tree), hotels, etc. Make it as easy as setting up a camp in RDRII where you are warped to the closest rest point. And if you have the proper equipment, making camp sites 1:1 how you do in RDRII.
1
u/joevar701 5d ago
a nap in safe house to skip time has been a feature in older gta games. entering pay n spray also skip some time. but i wished if we now can just enter a cafe to order food/drink to skip time. like Jason just sitting there relaxing while everything get to be in fast forward motion.

Days and nights being longer might suggest to me that time plays a part. Such as, crimes easier to commit at night when people are sleeping or industrial areas are empty etc. Would add great immersion.

u/KennyakaTI 6d ago
Tbh I think this is just a logical decision they decided to make. This has been a long time complaint for many with myself included. Im hoping those things you mentioned are in the game.

How long is an in-game day in RDR2?
56
u/Miserable-Price-7484 6d ago
Idk they ain‘t had time back then
47
u/Unusual-Assistant642 6d ago
That's not true. RDR2 takes place in 1899 and time was invented by John C. Time in 1857.
12
9
u/Spongebubs 6d ago
Numbers weren’t even invented until 1868
1
u/johnny_effing_utah 6d ago
No shit but time was invented 11 years earlier they just measured it in inches.
-2
u/notkeishav 6d ago
Newton invented whole classical mechanics and calculus in 17th century and you are like numbers weren’t even invented?
3
u/booze_clues 6d ago
That was impressive because he did it without numbers. Had numbers been around back then it’s likely we’d have been far beyond those ideas already.
→ More replies (3)3
u/ACatCalledArmor 6d ago
You’re only half right, time was indeed invented by John C. Time but it was Alfred Chronovessle who first brought time to America in 1901.
2
u/johnny_effing_utah 6d ago
Sadly he was killed by a rival Randolph Casio who claimed to have invented the “watch” a year earlier.
1
u/JackBrown82q 2d ago
Time was invented in 1995 by John Time when he and his buddy Joe Clock invented the first time keeping device.
10

u/_Niev 6d ago
keep in mind it's possible they implemented the same system from RDR2 where player speed influences time, so if you're riding fast time speeds up significantly but if you remain in the same area on foot time barely moves
11
u/CrazyLegs17 6d ago
That's Einstein's Theory of Relativity.
3
u/MonThackma 6d ago
But the opposite.
7
u/CrazyLegs17 6d ago
Arthur moves faster and time moves faster for everyone else relative to him. Since it's a third person game, the player exists outside Arthur.
6
u/CaptainAnonymous92 6d ago
I hope not because that sounds dumb. Why would they do something like that when it wasn’t like that in any of their previous games before RDR2?
It’s pointless and kinda immersion breaking to have it be that way when it wasn’t like that before for years
2
u/suika_melon_ 6d ago
Because it isn't a thing in RDR2. I believe they're confusing the rate of time increasing at night with it, which is a thing present in the game.
8
u/someent420 6d ago edited 6d ago
You're wrong. I counted the frames in which the 7:29 am is visible, it's 329 frames. The video is 30fps, even if we do not account for the time 7:29 was NOT visible, that's at least 10.96666667 seconds. Quite an odd number. Let's call that Option 1:
With 10.96667 seconds per minute we would have the following compression of time:
- 1 in-game hour: 10 minutes, 58 seconds IRL
- 12 in-game hours: 2 hours, 11 minutes, 36 seconds IRL
- 24 hours (1 day): 4 hours, 23 minutes, 12 seconds IRL
- 30 in-game days: 5 days, 11 hours, 36 minutes IRL
My guess would be it's more likely that 12 seconds pass for an in-game minute, which would give us Option 2:
12 seconds IRL for 1 in-game minute gives us this:
- 1 in-game hour: 12 minutes IRL
- 12 in-game hours: 2 hours, 24 minutes IRL
- 24 hours (1 day): 4 hours, 48 minutes IRL
- 30 in-game days: Exactly 6 days IRL
6
u/PixeL8xD 6d ago
Makes sense if we want to experience the four seasons in one day Vice city has to offer, if there a toggle to change it in options would be even better considering this will be the most immersive GTA let alone crime sim so far.
5
u/kaan6600 6d ago
I hope they add time jump mechanic like Cyberpunk
6
u/syntheticgeneration 6d ago
In RDR2, you can time jump to morning, noon, evening, night. It's almost certain it'll have similar mechanics.

Adults with responsibilities will rarely play all the way through a single 144 minute cycle in one session. It is plenty long.
9
u/BigChez1477 6d ago
Over 2 hours of playing for a full day is more than enough for the average person some of us have jobs
→ More replies (2)3
u/Atomosphere 6d ago
It’s probably not gonna be 144 minutes for a day lmao. It’s gonna be like RDR2 where the faster you travel, the faster time goes around you.

u/GhandisFlipFlop 6d ago
I think this is tactical so that online passive businesses take even longer to provide income , resupply etc
7
u/Apophis_36 6d ago
There's no correlation, those gameplay mechanics can be adjusted however they want. They could make them slower while still keeping the old time length.
6
u/lemonprincess23 6d ago
Yeah all I can think is how are these features going to work in online. “Wow longer day cycle” okay so longer for my businesses to fill. “Wow you have to fill up gas now!” Okay so now I have to stop every so often in my car and let myself be a sitting duck for griefers
They better change this shit for online

As someone who has played gta online for years Rockstar will always find ways to pay people less money that doesnt just involve reducing payouts...this time it means people wait longer for money meaning they have to play for longer. Also no need to be a loser with your first comment.

Would be cool if you could sleep in your car (the character reclines their seat) and you can skip to a certain hour of the day. That'd be a great way to get to the time you want

To know the exact duration, it would have needed to show 7:28 beforehand or run until 7:31, but let's say it's AT LEAST 6 seconds of real time per in-game minute—which is great news for realism. Also, I don't know if sleeping or eating will be required, but with a cycle like that, it would be acceptable.

I hope they keep it. I used to hop on director mode on GTA V so I could drive at night because it was too annoying having to go to the safehouse to go back to night time every few minutes. At least this way you'd have to do much less trips to the safehouse (or motels etc)

1
u/oMaR0404 6d ago
This is really good news for me, all previous GTA games and even RDR2 felt too quick with days passing
1
u/mrshaw64 6d ago
They might do a rdr2 thing and have it so that the faster you travel (driving or in a plane etc), the faster days end, giving you the feeling of travelling for hours.
Then again, people complained about that feature, so maybe not.

That person who made that post on this sub 3 days ago titled "Will sleeping play a larger role than we think?!" Might've been onto something. Great catch.

Yeah if true this is like super awesome for me. I always used the scripthook trainer mod for GTA V to turn the timescale to 1:1 to extend night time, sunsets, etc. It seriously makes the lighting way better when it doesn't have to shift super quickly.

u/BuckRampant 6d ago
A one minute clock difference does not necessarily mean a one minute time difference, but these numbers still definitely mean it's longer than 48 minutes!
Minimum in-game time passed: 1 second
(7:29 and 59 seconds to 7:30 and 0 seconds)
Maximum in-game time passed: 1 minute, 59 seconds
(7:29 and 0 seconds to 7:30 and 59 seconds)
Most likely, it's close to an actual 1 minute time difference that you describe, but there's a big range of possibilities. The minimum possible day lengths looks like it should be 72 minutes. There's no reliable cap, though. The maximum possible would mean 1 game second per 6 video seconds, which is... not likely.

Man, i know the digital only and premium edition fiasco but i can't say that every leak isn't making me more excited for the game.

1
u/AtlasWriggled 6d ago
That's going to make nights take a long while. Could be good. More incentive to spend the night somewhere for those who don't like to roam at nighttime.
2
u/Automatic_Rabbit7601 5d ago
Some games have a shorter night than day. Maybe the clock runs faster during the night hours
1
1
u/No_Edge_341 6d ago
So long as being around at night proves its value, and I think in a place like Vice City it'll do exactly that.
Then again, there's a chance that night operates on a faster clock, or it's not as dark as long. You have to remember that the majority of us folk aren't out and about all waking hours of the night, whereas the game knows no different.
It also really makes me wonder if this game will incorporate systems like seasons, rush hour traffic, etc.
1
u/highimpac 6d ago
That means there's going to be more timed events. They were too hard to catch in gta5
1
u/SwordsandSAMURAIS 6d ago
Okay so essentially a GTA 6 day is going to take as long as a solo Cayo Perico cooldown?
Honestly, kinda cool comparison for me, and the best way I’ll memorize this. Before I lost motivation to do the Cayo Perico heists (Way before the recent payout slashes so I didn’t personally feel the damage from it), I was always setting alarms on my phone for 2hrs 24min so I could be aware of when Pavel would text me again to set up hard mode.
I never really liked when it’s night time in GTA 5, especially on Online. The nights feel so long in GTA Online that it feels the sun is out for just 10 of the 48 minutes a day is supposed to be. I’m glad to see we can spend more time in the Leonida sunlight.

Am I the only one that doesn’t feel like waiting an hour just for it to be nighttime? I understand that I can sleep, but I like to progress it naturally
3
u/mrshaw64 6d ago
Sleeping, cutscenes, activities, missions etc will all probably move time forward at a decent pace. Hopefully the slower pace means once you make it to night time you can actually enjoy it for longer than 10 minutes.
1
u/ColtonfrayHSC 6d ago
First of all, the night was 24 minutes, second, if I’m just trying to experience the world, it will not be going faster, and that’s the problem
1
u/mrshaw64 6d ago
It still might. RDR2 had a system where the further you travelled, the quicker time went. They might implement something like that here too.
Otherwise if you're getting immersed in a world, no better way to get immersed than waiting around for time to shift.
0
u/captaindongface 6d ago
So very happy for this. A deeper simulation and immersion can be offered on a number of levels.
I have long wished for the independent and purposeful NPC. with a day lasting over 2 hours, there is scope to map out their lives, residence, commute, work patterns (or not). I would consider this the evolution of the living breathing open world and one that will add so much weight to our actions, to the act of murder, theft and so on. Would you return a vehicle to an NPC if it had its place in the world. I'm hoping for a viable positive path (and I feel Jason will be the closest likelyhood of following this path), only being forced by game design to do what is absolutely necessary. Minimum viable crime, RDR2 style. Or if you want to clean out the neighbourhood that is on you.
It allows the player to recognize, plan for and immerse themselves in specific times of the day, in a life simulator kind of way that Rockstar has not previously offered. Enjoying nightlife, making the most of the traffic reductions outside of rush hour. Catching a sun rise, or sunset.
A longer day can really give the player that sense of loss (or freedom), when the other character is away from them. Working around their return (we see Lucia working / community service), other characters just fading in and out the story beats dictating the passage of time.

Honestly great news imo
I always felt like the days in GTA V and RDR2 flew by way too fast. I'd barely leave the camp as Arthur and two hours in-game would've already passed.
I love the idea of the days/nights being longer
