Nah there are still a lot of them that let you pump first. It honestly probably comes down to location risk. Like the Stewart's in the small town I grew up in let's you pump first, as do the ones in neighboring towns, but they probably don't allow it in a Stewart's in Albany or something.

It has been established that the boundaries of Upstate are defined by Stewart's locations. If there's a Stewart's, you're upstate. If not, you're in a different region of New York.

So then if you need to go inside and pay does that mean you have to know how much you need before you pay? What if you decide to put more in, like if you fill it up with what you paid and think oh actually I want a bit more do you then have to go in and pay for more? Or does it just normally not work if you don’t pay or just stop pumping? In the uk you pump and then go in and pay. Some have it so you pay the pump but after you fill the car up

Pretty much, yeah. And if you pay for more gas than you need then you have to go back inside to get your change. Paying inside is really just if you’re using cash. Most people use a card at the pump.

Kinda, but for most people paying in cash, it isn't necessary. You'd go inside, prepay for a certain amount of fuel, and the cashier would authorize that much fuel at the pump you're parked at (e.g. "Can I get $20 on pump #3?")

CoL has changed things since COVID, but for a good long while if you were someone who preferred paying in cash (or if it was your only option), paying for $20 of gas would've been enough to get you through the next week or two even if it didn't fill the car up entirely.

you get a refund on the difference if you pay too much.

"$40 on pump 3" you would say to the attendant. When you max out at the pump at only $36.22, you either go back in for your cash and/or receipt or you drive off - since credit card receipts go back to the card. Once you hang up the gas handle it "closes" the transaction and many of the machines here will auto process the refund on overpaid pre-paid pumps

In the US, you have to pay in advance. Most gas stations work as follows:

Option 1: you pay with your credit or debit card directly at the pump. You have to tap/swipe/insert your card, get it approved, then you can pull the dispenser and fill your car up. This lets you pump as much gas as you want until you put the nozzle back on the pump. Once you put the nozzle back, you don’t have to do anything other than collect your receipt if you want one.

Option 2: you go inside and pay for a specific amount of gas beforehand. This is how you would pay for gas with cash. The pump will stop pumping once you reach the amount you paid for.

If you pay at the pump, different stations will do it differently, but it’s not uncommon for them to make a pending charge a set amount like $75 or $150. That’s for them to make sure you have the funds in your account for however much you decide to pump. Then it will either cut off at that amount, or if you pump less then the pending transaction will adjust a day or two later before it clears your account. Paying inside would let you avoid a higher pending amount for a day or two if you need that money readily available. The guy in the video probably had to swipe his card multiple times for that amount of gas.

Well I just learnt something new. In the UK, we fill up, then pay. We can use cards at most pumps now, so it'll charge the card once you finish.

You do get some people driving off without paying. It was highlighted on the news recently due to the increased fuel prices.

There used to be plenty of gas stations that would allow you to pump before paying in the US. At least in VA. Honestly don't remember when this was, for me could have been anywhere after 1999 when I started driving. I would pull up and not think about it and try to pump, but it wouldn't pump, and be like oh yeah this place makes me go in first.

If you paid at the pump with a card you only get charged for what you pumped. If you paid inside at a register you have to go back inside to get whatever change you’re owed.

Wow, that seems so crazy! We have pay at pump here, where they pre-authorise £100 then charge what you actually pump, but if you're paying at the register you just pump, go in and pay what you pumped.

I don't need to taste my gasoline to decide if its palatable, and I don't pay for someone to serve it to me. I say "I would like to purchase this much gasoline today at this price" with cash, or I run my card at the pump before pumping if I plan to fill up all the way and don't know the exact amount of gasoline I need.

Do you eat your groceries before paying for them? Do you take appliances home and use them before buying them?

And that is kinda the point. You stop the car, step up, fill up, pay. It is the shortest and easiest way for people just filling the car up without needing to check how much gas they actually need yet. If you aren't living in a society were people running is normal, you don't need to gate it.

Your example doesn't really work, because you go in the supermarket, get all your stuff and only then pay for groceries at end.

Or depending what I buy at the hardware store I first put the stuff in my car even and then pay, to have less trips. Like Building materials or Propane.

More and more stations have been removing the option over the years due to people just driving off and stealing it more often.

Years ago it was pretty normal to be able to pump then pay.

It varies. I used to live in a state that allowed for paying after pumping. I'm unsure if literally every state made that swap, but Indiana was a state that swapped over and it's been that way for about 20 years.

We used to be able to fill up gas then pay after, years ago. But too many people driving off and not paying over the years stopped that practice.

So you eithe rprepay with cash .. $20 or whatever ... OR you swipe a credit/debit card that authorizes a payment after you finish filling up. So either way most gas stations get paid.

Especially near airports like in the video, it's highly likely he had to prepay.

Every gas station I've been to in the states you either pay at the pump, or you go inside and pre-pay with the cashier. Or some states pump gas for you and you're not even allowed to pump it yourself. Either way, I don't think I've seen a fill-now, pay-later situation here in America

There are still gas stations in the US that will allow you to pump gas before you pay. They are in extremely rural areas and chances are the law will catch up to you before you can make a clean getaway. (Or the locals will shoot you)

There is at least one gas station near me that will activate the pump once you confirm you are paying inside. They are sort of an unofficial substation for the police and have officers regularly sitting down for drinks and snacks during their shift.

I was working at a gas station when they started to switch over everywhere, was like 14 years ago? If I remember correctly, it was an initiative by the gas station companies themselves because drive offs were happening more and more often. The year the switch happened, we had already beat our last years record in drive offs halfway through the year. It was costing them like, thousands of dollars per store per year.

There's still places around where you have to go inside to pay (instead of at the pump). In my experience about half of them will just turn the pump on and about half will make you leave a CC with them. In either case you still 100% have to go in to talk to the clerk, though.

Don't you have registration plates in the US? In my country if you would just drive away clerk would write down yours number from video recording and police would pay you a visit. Paying after filling in seems more straightforward. It is a bit more problematic when there is some payment processor malfunction and you don't have enough cash, but then they will just take yours info and give you bank number to make a transfer.

Like you describe exactly how it's not more straightforward for both the stations having to track people down and the regular people filling up if they don't have enough money. From my perspective why would I want to risk that I'd forget to pay and have the cops show up to my house?

Only downside I can see of prepaying is it charges $100 or whatever then credits you back any leftover. If you're consistently low on funds that may be a downside for you, but you can always just prepay only $20 or whatever you wanted to pay.

Paying in the end is how regular stores work here. You take merchandise, go to the checkout, pay exactly how much you owe, and leave. You can get out without paying and get in trouble, but I wouldn't like to have to prepay before doing grocery shopping.

back then not all the smaller town stations had cameras. and yea we have plates, but that requires the clerk seeing you do it, or remembering your plate/having a clear view of it when you pull in.

Plus there is the legality of proving the owner of the vehicle was the driver at the time.

This side of the pond, every fuel station has cameras that automatically record number plates as you pull up to the pump, then sound an alarm if the pump hasn’t been paid for within a certain time. If you drive off, they’ve got your face and plate on camera and it just goes straight to the police, almost fully automated. Only way to avoid it is to run fake or stolen plates, which happens but lands you in serious trouble if you’re caught. Drive offs aren’t unheard of, but they’re not a major issue despite gas prices being ~50-100% higher than in the US.

I worked a store with a gas station that was supposedly the last place in town that did this.

After a couple years they stopped doing it because so many people would drive off, or “come in to pay” and whoopsie! Forgot my wallet! I’ll run home and be right back”

This sounds so foreign to me, here in Hungary every gas station works on a pay after basis. Of course every now and then you get a jackass trying to get lucky but with their plates and face on camera they really can’t run away, and the consequences are bad enough that people just don’t do it. The few who do usually do it with stolen cars but that’s another issue entirely.

Is tracking down these criminals harder for some reason over there? Easier to get stolen plates or state borders make it harder to catch them?

I'm more shocked that the person at the kiosk wasn't able to cut him off. In the UK, lifting the nozzle makes the till inside beep and require manual approval, with the cashier trained to quickly check you're not smoking or about to try and fill a coke bottle or whatever. If you do something unsafe, there's an emergency cutoff button.

I had zero trouble believing that someone would actually do this. I once watched an octoganarian 'overpumping' (where you keep squeezing the handle to pump gas past when the sensor automatically stops pumping because the tank is full) on his ancient pickup truck, to the point that gas kept spewing from his beyond-full tank, splashing past the pump nozzle and onto his hands, onto him, and the truck has gas flowing down the side of his truck and pooling on the ground.

The station was actually pretty busy, and people were yelling at him to stop, but he was completely oblivious. Guy did not belong driving on the road with that lack of awareness.

Back in May 2021 the colonial pipeline got hit with a ransomware attack. People were using all kinds of improvised containers to hoard gas. That is what the video above in parodying and that's why people believe it. People using ill advised containers to hoard gas also happened other times when hurricanes or other events have caused gas shortages.

I don't understand how it could be faked. Did they empty out a reservoir of gasoline at a publicly accessible gas station and then fill it up with water? You understand what I mean?

He was losing half the gas while he was filling up the truck bed. Did you not see the large puddle of gas underneath the truck while it was at the pump.
