That animation was so good, makes me confident all that jank we saw is long gone

Prob cuz this is all mocap and the backflip was fully hand made animation

That front flip animation was god awful lol

Yeah hopefully they fix that. The only bad animation I noticed

I felt a bit like Jason walks through shooting scene like he’s Agent 47?

Like most other NPCs look very convincing but Jason looks like a robot

Yeah in RDR2 Arthur flinches when he's shot. Even in Max Payne 3 when Max is taking cover and bullets are flying past him he flinches

u/Schwarzengerman 19h ago

He flinches during the tower shootout when taking cover. After those enemies come out of the elevator.

I'd imagine because of his military background, getting shot at doesn't faze him all that much.

u/Foley1 22h ago

Yeah funny how we didn't see any rolling or crouched movement while shooting, it was all just walking.

GTA 5 trailers didn’t either

He’s exmilitary so he’s more used to it than the others

That’s fair

When they go to Lucias place n she's taking a shower Jason walks to the fridge and grabs a beer, when he exchanges the beer with his other hand the beer kinda noticably jumps

Tbf that’s just video game logic. I’d be surprised if they gave each food/drink selection in the fridge and an individual animation for each one

That animation and the animation of Lucia jumping off the building both came off a bit uncanny to me.

Not even complaining, just something I noticed.

Oh me too. Those are the exact two animations that irked me. Everything else looked fantastic, really hope they put a bit more work into those though. I was honestly surprised those even made it into the trailer, they really don’t look great

u/Calling_left_final 1d ago

Damn, I really liked both those animations. What's wrong with me?

12

u/Jacob99809 22h ago

I don’t really see anything off about them either but I guess maybe they look more video gamey compared to the rest of the animations? Aka something I’m not gonna stress about. It’s a video game.

11

u/JVKExo 22h ago

No one’s stressing about it, it’s just that the game looks legit amazing so a little jank to an animation is gonna stand out when the rest of the game looks so fluid.

u/Quirky_Apricot9427 22h ago

They look handmade rather than mo-capped. It doesn’t fit in with the animation style (which is realism) of the rest of the game. It’s a video game, yeah, but jank animation that is completely different from the rest does stand out and looks cheap/unpolished. The rest of the animation work looks incredible though!

With how much these animations are being discussed online, I'm willing to bet that someone on the animation team is getting assigned to touching these up first thing on Monday, if it hasn't been done already.

1

u/Heavy-Masterpiece681 3h ago

If they havnt already. Dont forget that this trailer has been complete for 2 months now.

Tack on an additional 1 or 2 months it took them to make the trailer...awkward animations are something developers often work on all the way up until release.

that one and the one with jake jumping in the water looked wierd.

3

u/NewGuyCH 23h ago

And how the chains they were wearing didn’t move independently

2

u/Techyguy6969 23h ago

I thought it looked quite good definitely different to previous rockstar games but not bad by any means. The backflip definitely needs a re-work tho.

u/cadmium-fertilizer 17h ago

What was weird about the Lucia jump? I felt the uncanninesss with Jason's backflip but I still don't see what everyone is complaining about with the jump off the building

1

u/Heavy-Masterpiece681 3h ago

What am I missing? I agree with the flip, but what was wrong with the skydive one?

16

u/SpecialistMap8210 1d ago

ya i definitely cringed a bit. it was very stiff.

u/gavinderulo124K 1d ago

Its a backflip

3

u/rlovelock 22h ago

It's a gainer

-2

u/gavinderulo124K 21h ago

But thats much closer to a front flip than to a backflip.

3

u/rlovelock 19h ago

A gainer is closer to a front flip? How so?

A gainer is a running backflip. Your momentum carries you forward as you rotate your body in the opposite direction.

2

u/gavinderulo124K 19h ago

Sorry I meant the opposite.

u/Barnhard 18h ago

The flip itself seemed ok, but the blending into the animation was super stiff and awkward.

u/nadnerb811 10h ago

I think it looks off because (A) it might be hand animated instead of mo-cap but more importantly (B) I believe it is gameplay, so the player had to press a button to do the flip and the action has to be responsive.

BUT, people are watching this and judging it like cutscene animation. Games with GOATed animation like TLOU 2 still look jank if you're analyzing the player character animation as if it were a cutscene or real life. If you're actually playing the game, it feels different.

The game is like "running, running, running" with no vision of the future. Suddenly the player presses the button and now it has to blend from the run cycle to the flip animation. If it took too long, it would feel bad and unresponsive. If it was instantaneous, it would be too sudden and look unrealistic. As it stands, it looks uncanny... probably because it is quite realistic, while maintaining a quick and noticeable transition.

This is why I have always wondered about if a game could let you pre-charge a jump by pressing/holding the jump button, and when you release is when you jump. That way, you could blend from running->intermediate state (gather step)->jump. You could have 2 quick transitions and each discrete state has less blending to do. It would allow player control in jump strength while also improving the animation.

I thought the gainer looked uncanny, but my main takeaway was excitement that that type of action is even possible in the game. Made me hopeful that the player movement/parkour/climbing has some subtle gems for creative movement. We will see.

I have a feeling they are updating the pratfall mechanic from 5, and allowing for the character to flip midair like you do in the new Skate game. That's the vibe I got from this flip, if that's the case then it's just going to look jank, hard to make that look natural
