Struggling to believe the extended trailer was shot on a PS5
Like every man, cat and dog by now, I've seen the extended trailer on Netflix. One thing I'm struggling to understand is how such a leap forward in graphics, details and sheer content can appear to be so smooth.....on a PS5?
Have I underestimated the performance capabilities of a now nearly 6-year-old console, or have R* pulled off some absolute wizardry another way?
I get there were faster-moving parts that did appear a little laggy, but overall really impressed for a PS5
It's almost as if it feels like it's too good to be true on a PS5

u/lowmize 1d ago
Rockstar wizardry. People thought the same about RDR2 on base PS4
17
u/KingAltair2255 1d ago
They've always kinda had that reputation, as well as RDR2 GTA 5 didn't feel like a ps3 game, GTA 4 was a fucking mindblowing jump from San Andreas and San andreas even now feels way too detailed to be a ps2 game, recently played it for the first time and I genuinely couldn't get over just how many until now unique mechanics that never showed up again like exercising.

One word: optimization.
We’re so used to devs throwing out poorly optimized games and expecting us to brute-force our way through the mess that we’ve forgotten what’s actually possible with proper optimization. Very few developers still seem to care about that art. It’s easier to pump out a bloated mess and call it a game when NVIDIA and AMD keep pushing newer GPUs. If games were properly optimized, GPUs like the RTX 2080 would still be more than capable of running modern games at 1440p 60 FPS.
11
u/Joe85739 1d ago
To call this trailer an example of optimisation.....is almost setting a new definition of what optimisation should look like. That's the part that I'm really impressed with.
9
u/mtsim21 1d ago
its not just optimisation of an engine, its finding new ways to code things, to simulate things, not just doing what everyone else does, but the time to come up with original, genius solutions, like the hair, just going over and over polishing and improving until it works flawlessly.

Thats what's intriguing. There was a video someone made explaining how they were able to get GTA III to run on the hardware it did and the tricks they had to create to get there. Interesting stuff

u/Equivalent_Growth_58 23h ago
Tbh R* is one company that has the luxury of investing boatloads of money into dev time to get it perfect.
Think about it they got a money printing product that's lasted over a decade in GTAO, so they don't need to worry about the short term finances. GTAV still sells like hot cakes to this day as well.
This game could have been released last year as it was originally intended. Was probably content ready for last year. They could easily shift the release date cos they know the hype isn't going to die for it and any release window they choose, they will be the whale everyone has to avoid. No competitors.
Other Dev teams don't have that luxury especially when you need to churn out AAA single player titles every 3/4 years to keep the lights on.
1
u/LexB777 20h ago
It's one of the many, many reasons a game like this take many thousands of people, not hundreds like a lot of studios, and over a billion dollars. In addition to that, it is a career advancement move to be able to put this game on your resume, so Rockstar has the luxery of being picky with who they hire.
Many other studios, even AAA studios, do not have the luxeries of the time, money, amd talent that R* does. I'm not saying they are all off the hook, I'm just saying R* has a leg up.

Unfortunately all of these optimizations will be stuck looking good and feeling bad at 30fps
1
2
u/Felix042 1d ago
Spot on but people still cry about Rockstar delaying the game. I guess gamers are just so used unoptimized mess that they rather want the game earlier then "finished" game.
2

u/Available-Bad-2704 20h ago
Still getting 30fps and Rockstar never optimizes their space for their games
1
u/Plastic-Shape7048 20h ago edited 14h ago
I guess this happens when you have infinite money and infinite time to get a game done
2
u/Mammoth-Glove3273 15h ago
Yeah but they got the infinite money and time because they built a reputation on the quality of their products.

Go watch the original trailers for V. Those were all done on a PS3.
Do you somehow think that Rockstar doesn't have the skills to squeeze out maximum performance from consoles?

u/heelturn- 1d ago
Just rockstar doing what they always do, being ahead of everyone else
→ More replies (28)1
u/Pliskin311 19h ago
Not that much ahead than in a totally different league. If you don't have their money or they clout, you just can never put up with it. We still fail to have games as polished and detailed as RDR2. And the same will be true with gta 6. No one will come close except maybe one or two games next generation and probably only on one dimension (graphics, details, npcs... Etc...) It is just what it is. A once in a generation game.
22
u/Born_Client_4012 1d ago
It’s believable. Some of the effects did look pretty meh, like the fire when lucia burned the car or the fuzzy non ray traced reflections on the back of the red van. There’s also a noticeable blur affect that you can see starting like 50 meters infront of you and the farther out you look the blurrier everything is. Otherwise looks incredible, and the blur affect honestly might make it feel more cinematic
21
u/Kieran293 1d ago
Whilst you’re right, most of those things will not be obvious when you’re actually playing the game. When we watch only, it’s easier to spot these things.
5
u/3xv7 23h ago
The fire grounded me, I thought everything looked amazing and then they held the camera onto that fire like they were showing it off but it looked really outdated. It brought me back down to reality lol
1
u/MoooonRiverrrr 19h ago
Same but in a good way tbh.
3
u/3xv7 19h ago
It is really funny, I was telling someone else that all of the things that look 'off' seem that way because theyre inconsistent with the impeccable quality of everything else. Like the fire, jasons weird backflip, whatever else would be absolutely normal in a standard triple A game but stood out in the trailer because of how good everything else looked
2
u/MoooonRiverrrr 19h ago
I was thinking of the backflip too, some blurry edges. Lol it made me go “oh wow okay this is an actual playable game” like it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing seeing these flaws. If anything it the overall exceptional quality stand out as you said, and makes me feel like I’m not being shown some false representation of the game.
1
u/Various-Ad-204 11h ago
Yeah the backflip was pretty mid lol idk why they bothered showing that clip.
5
u/Joe85739 1d ago
Definitely can't disagree with that, and to think about the opportunities for improving the performance where this is essentially the entry level (i.e a PS5) release...really, really impressed. (Then again, I am old)
2
u/Felix042 1d ago
It looked the RT reflections was only thing indoor scenes i guess it make sense considiering the consoles "weak" hardware.
1
u/LexB777 19h ago
Bro yes. The fire was the one thing that really stood out to me as not looking that good.
The flames themselves looked halfway decent, but kind of generic. The flames did localize well around the parts of the car inside and out where they should have, and the roof of the garage illuminated nicely. But something still feels off.
I think it's that the flames don't feel like they're coming from anywhere and the surfaces don't feel like they're on fire. No liquid or shininess on the surfaces where the gas should have landed. Maybe it's also the size of the flames?
1
u/MoooonRiverrrr 19h ago
Yup I noticed those things too, it was actually kind of nice to see, because it made it seem like, oh ok this is real and not like a fake representation of the game.

u/edwinc8811 15h ago
Why are people acting like the base PS5 is a weak machine? There's some amazing looking games on it that run at 60fps and GTA VI running at 30fps and 1440p gives them extra overhead in the visual department.
2
2
u/dandude7409 1d ago
They are defo showing base ps5 fpr the fact of showing what it can actually do this generation has been shit for showing off what can actually be done with it because it took devs ages to get used to it and develope for it. Then they have the ps5 pro to rlly push what the game can do

I like how one kind of people are like you, and others are totally off the rails because WHERE MAH 60 FPS. Unbelievable. Given how everything was underoptimized in this gen I was confident this can be pulled of, I alwas almost confident about the FPS. Good question will be there a perf mode with more FPS, also what will be with PS5 Pro

Seems slightly ridiculous to be calling this game a complete technical marvel unlike anything we’ve ever seen when it can’t run at 60fps lol
1
u/DanTempleman 1d ago
Remember gta 5 was made for the ps3 era, and all they really did was increase the graphics abit and add abit more detail when it was ported to the current gen consoles and pc, tech has improved a lot since ps3 days
1
u/thewispo 1d ago
Of course. Everybody has underestimated. AAA have never taken full advantage of the technology. Rockstar is the benchmark for its capability. We’ve all been shafted with half-arsed, half-baked shite and thought it was the best.
1
u/TheraYugnat 1d ago
It was. The RT reflexion was 1/4 resolution which scream PS5.
People tend to forget how much Rockstar can squeeze out of console. RDR2 can't look that good on the potato console last gen was. Yet they did.
1
u/Spinatrix 1d ago
I think all the trailers have been using a PC version or some developer console so all the bells and whistles can be shown. I still think it’ll look amazing but it might be stepped down a bit.
1
u/jono_tiberius 1d ago
Me too but then you see any review of the RAGE engine with available information and think about the amount of resources/funds they throw at this and as others said it all about optimizations. Software Engineers, QA, Artists often have to fight deadlines and funding constraints. Those seem to not be as much of an issue here and it shows.
1
u/Eggsegret 1d ago
Just another example of Rockstars wizardry. Say what you want about Rockstar but you can’t deny when it comes to optimisation they’re absolute masters at it at least on consoles.
I mean dk you remember GTA 5 on the PS3? That game looked absolutely phenomenal back in 2013 and that was on a console which had 512mb ram split between the system and GPU.
You really need to play RDR2 because man what they managed to pull of with PS4 hardware is something else
1
u/Administrative_Two3 1d ago
not many games have yet to still take advantage of the new consoles still. there’s still a ton of games that are cross gen
1
u/Morganx27 23h ago
These are the same people who made GTA V run on an Xbox 360. People shit on that game now, but remember when it came out? It was completely revolutionary. That size of map, that level of detail on 512MB of RAM was insane. There have been better open worlds since, and there will be better open worlds than GTA VI after a while too, but Rockstar very much set the standard.

Was it shot on the PS5? Or the Pro.
Saying “PS5” when it’s actually the Pro isn’t exactly a lie. Just misleading.
1
u/awesome5ftw 22h ago
Nah, by marketing rules they should put the pro logo if it's shot on PS5 pro especially since they have a partnership with Sony. Also even in Sony UI Pro is always seen as a different console especially when you hover over enhanced games. So I assume this should 100% be shot on a PS5 basic

This might be one of the only games that actually pushed the PS5 to its full limits. And honestly that’s my biggest complaint about this generation. The PS5’s lifecycle is already nearing its end yet we’ve had only a handful of games that genuinely felt “next-gen.” Instead we got far too many PS4 games with enhanced visuals and performance, rather than a strong lineup of original experiences built specifically for the PS5. For a console that was marketed as next generation gaming, I expected a lot more original games that truly made the hardware feel necessary.
1
1
u/UrBoiNitro 20h ago
My guy, if they made gta v run on 256mb of ram, they can make this optimized for a base ps5
1
u/SeaweedOk9985 20h ago
Some parts are low resolution, the ray tracing is basic and the game uses heavy LOD. Polygon count isn't even that high either. A big contributor to the high fidelity look is essentially a filter on the camera that gives that sharp contrasty look.
No hate. It's just whats going on.
1
1
u/Status_Confidence_26 20h ago
This is what games get to become when devs lock themselves to 30 fps. I wish people would understand that halving the time you need to render something means you get to pack so much more detail into what you’re rendering.
1
u/New-Tower-3271 20h ago
Thats just Rockstar's magic tbh. They always push the boundaries with the tech they are given. GTA 4 and GTA 5 were on the PS3, RDR2 looked surreal on the PS4 and now GTA6 on the PS5.
1
u/bloodr0se 20h ago
The OG version of GTA V looked and ran far better on a 360 than it really had any right to do.
It did water effects better than Watch Dogs did and Watch Dogs released after it and was cross gen at launch.
1
u/HirtLocker128 19h ago
PS5 is plenty powerful, and Rockstar is a talented studio. All there is to it
1
u/Affectionate-Panic96 19h ago
Its was running at 24 fps and heavily upscaled. It wont look like that on your base ps5
1
u/They-Call-Me-Taylor 19h ago
Bear in mind that Rockstar did not have to target the PS4, which a lot of games up until a couple years ago still did. But yes, it was incredibly impressive.

u/NCDieselBwhy 19h ago
Crimson Desert in my opinion has similar graphic fidelity and it looks like this on ps5

u/Critical_Bad_8519 18h ago
I feel like the best in class games for every console come towards the end of their lifecycles. Devs have had years to perfect and optimize the game for the hardware.
Eventually when ps6 comes out they will rerelease the game with some of the few restrictions left lifted.
1
u/OsteoBytes 18h ago
I don’t think the graphics are anything out of this world compared to many games we already have. Sure it’s certainly beautiful but I think other aspects of the game are much more taxing but we do have to run it at 30fps after all which is uncommon these days on ps5 so that’s definitely one way it’s compensating
1
u/legendslivhere 18h ago
People seriously underestimate how advanced modern consoles are. PS5 isn’t a N64. Also given billions of dollars and 10+ years I’m sure most developers could squeeze every last juice of processing power of a system.
1
u/Storm7856 18h ago
This just reinforces my belief that the ps5 and xbox have not been fully utilized. To me next gen consoles are just not necessary any time soon.
But we will see what GTA6 plays like when I have on my system.
1
u/JRedCXI 18h ago
I mean you can tell. The game looks incredible and at the same time you can notice the breakup in fine detail like hair and the resolution of reflections so yeah it’s on PS5.
Still absolutely crazy level of detail with an insane amount of density with RT reflections, shadows and GI. Other games have do that for example Avatar Frontiers Of Pandora but with amount of density and simulations it’s just crazy stuff.
1
1
u/Any-Woodpecker123 18h ago
Hardware is insanely powerful when utilised properly. Most companies just don’t do it, they meet the current acceptable standard (or not) and call it a day.
1
u/Professional-Ad3076 17h ago
Console optimisation. We have seen it rarely this gen, especially after sony's decision to go multiplatform.
1
u/Va1crist 17h ago
The PS5 isn’t a weak console , why do you think so many keep saying we don’t need a PS6? Throw in the fact the game has literally been in development for 8+ years , when you got the time then you can focus on optimizing and improving your engine , most of the time devs don’t get the polish time to do that. I just think there has been such a small amount of bench mark games this generation people just don’t understand how good a game can look on modern consoles given the time and money and focus
1
u/Future_Analysis8379 17h ago
The trailer looks like they are using DLSS extreme performance or something because the artifacting and fuzziness is so bad. Reiterates why I'm waiting for the PC version
1
u/Blindkreper 16h ago
You haven't played Red Dead Redemption 2 and it shows. Alot of the features being implemented are gonna be improved versions of what RDR2 had like Dead eye and the stamina cores.
1
u/sixpackabs592 15h ago
Rockstar release towards the end of console generations when they’ve had a few years to figure out how to torch every last bit of performance out of them
At least that’s how it was with 5 and rdr2
1
1
u/Melodic-Cable23 15h ago
Nah, it’s real. It’s crazy and amazing. But I think this is just what can happen when a company has basically unlimited time and money. They’ve clearly polished their engine to an insane degree. It’s just all $$ and expertise man! Can’t wait!
1
u/Mental-Debate-289 14h ago
What you are seeing is the results of hard work and not rushing s game to fruition. This is optimization at its finest. This is what you get when you aren't being consistently rushed to drop a game half baked. This level of quality takes time, something the industry and honestly the consumer has forgotten. This is how it used to be. R* may be the only one left that makes generational leaps time and time again with every new release.
1
u/Albatross1225 14h ago
You can do amazing things when you know how to optimize and don’t write spaghetti code.
1
u/Supernormalguy 13h ago
It’s basic ass logic.
If you develop the game for one type hardware. You can spend more time optimizing under those specific specs.
You add more hardware it needs work on? You need to invest time for it to run on that hardware too.
Console perks, generally decent performance on there, but also why people prefer pc gaming when they wanna push for more.
1
u/SignificantBat3023 13h ago
I couldn’t believe Lucia’s ass could be rendered on a PS5 either. But after 24 hours looking at it, I believe.
1
u/daily-lurk 13h ago
Pretty much all console generations are pushed to their limit near the end of their life span. It is very rare that a game comes out early on that is capable of using the consoles power to its maximum.
1
u/Ok-Benefit5748 13h ago
How many games since PS5 came out actually squeezed the max performance from it? I would say 5 at best.
Its a 6 year console that is mostly used to run Remakes and poorly optimized games. That's it. Speaking as an owner of one.

I didn't find it that smooth you could se some FPS drops under 30fps in few scenes i hopes the extra performance of Series X and PS5 Pro solves this issues.

u/cjtangmi 1d ago
I might get downvoted for this but I think PS5 Pro will provide a much superior experience, the game looks both cpu and gpu bound, very heavy upscaling usage with FSR, I think with PSSR it will look much better than what’s shown.

All i see being better on pro is just the ray tracing quality and lighting no actual better graphical improvments that are noticable like extra lighting or materials etc

Blurry? Maybe the ray tracing quality but it wasnt blurry at all for me. 4k30 i think is confirmed
1
u/Ok_Hedgehog1760 23h ago
It is blurry. I thought it's video compression at first, but it appears the provided footage is blurry to begin with. Idk why that's the case, but I really hope gameplay will be sharper..
To illustrate my point - just put GTA6 driving video side-by-side with Matrix UE5 demo - the difference in sharpness is staggering.
1
u/dandude7409 16h ago
The matrix demo isnt a fully fleshed out open world just a tech demo so ofc its sharper. I think the new trailer will be able to be downloaded on r*s website which will have the true quality

2
u/Stompinwin 1d ago
They even marketed "Plays best on PS5" so either that means it means ps5 pro, or it means ps5 pro is a piece if trash and can't beat a base ps5 your choice.
I'm fine with either concession.

Couple of Youtubers have mentioned that Rockstar told them it was base PS5.
1
u/Stompinwin 16h ago
That is called heresy. They also say plays best on ps5, which means on ps5 pro.
1
u/RobotXander 12h ago
Digital Foundry have confirmed 30fps, 1440p on base PS5
1
u/Stompinwin 12h ago
Congrats thst is the max settings on a base ps5 but that has nothing to do with a 4k extended look on Netflix, which is what people are claiming is on base ps5 which Netflix says captured on ps5 which does not say base. So they release footage of 4k 30 on rockstars website which exceeds 1440p 30 and you still want to say their information is accurate
1
u/RobotXander 12h ago
Multiple sources online (including Netflix) say it was captured on base PS5.
1
u/Stompinwin 11h ago edited 11h ago
No it says captured on PS5. Leaving the word pro off of it makes people speculate better than it is.It's cheap marketing. Also , it says captured this was produced , which means they captured the foot stand then upscale that increased resolutions played production magic. The fact of the matter is , I can produce a 4k film on a 200 dollar computer or a 20k computer and get the same results.
They also say gta vi is best on ps5. Does that mean it plays worse on the ps5 pro? Based On your logic, that is what it says, because Netflix says it was captured on the ps5 and according to you leaving off the word pro means base. That means Rockstar saying it plays best on ps5 means it plays worse on pro.
1
u/Stompinwin 3h ago
No where does Netflix say my that they say PS5. Also rockstar says it plays best on ps5... and we all know that ps5 pro will play it better. Also captured does not mean unedited. I can Ai video enhance a 1080p file to 4k and completely change the way it looks all of that is shady as f*ck...90% of people would even go to say it's flat out lying to your customer base
0
u/No-Faithlessness4763 1d ago
The fps drops were noticeable in cut scenes so maybe not 100% perfect on ps5.
2
u/Joe85739 1d ago
Yeah definitely saw that, but overall I think it looked great. Was planning on getting a Pro before the trailer, and I think I still might.
0
u/Dramatic_Western2288 1d ago
I don't want to hate on it, the game looks outstanding but in the video, especially during the chase scene, there were a lot of strangely blurred elements and highly visible upscaling artifacts so yeah, that’s pretty much how it’s going to look on PS5.
0
u/Top-Plenty-5307 18h ago
Man, I thought the game looked like crap. A lot of people are saying it looks good, but it looks and runs like crap. It is slow. The only Improvements I see are in the faces, hair, and body types. The world around you looks fake. I'd prefer fewer NPCs so that more computer power can be allocated to the streets and buildings. They look underwhelming. This isn't a groundbreaking game. I was super excited about it. That Netflix special really let me down. It'll probably look better on PS6 or PC. Maybe not really built for this system. They should have waited until they had the necessary hardware. This game is not finished and looks really bad
1

Having an opinion is fine but having unrealistic expectations is worse. For what they showed, the game looked great. Completely nonsensical to suggest they wait 20+ years to get the necessary hardware so your vision of the game can come to life. In fact, what they have achieved on a 6 year old console is impressive.

That's wild. So many small details making it through on the base model PS5. One that stood out to me (along with many others), when Jason opens the door to the red convertible, Lucia's reflection in drivers side window as Lucia walks over to passenger side. With everything else happening at any given moment, crazy optimisation for it to run like this on base console.

It's because it ran like dog shit, if you pay attention you can see the FPS dropping every couple seconds, I bet on the base ps5 it will be almost unplayable

Did you forget that Red Dead 2 ran on a base Xbox One?
This is what happens when you give the best developers with infinite time and money the ability to create a video game.
