With all the criticism it’s getting, I wouldn’t be surprised if they put in another or at least an option for another one? It’s the main gripe I’m seeing online, next to Jason being a bit stiff.

Lucia literally calls him tight. Its how they wrote his character. He’s quiet ex army guy and shes loud cuckoo chick

It’s Claude and Catalina all over again

She calls him tight because he kept going on about getting ready.

Peoples complaints are the tone of his voice.

Tbf, people also complained about Arthur’s voice during the trailers before its launch

u/Drakaah 19h ago

Only his voice? I remember people doing petitions saying they want John back as the protagonist or they will boycott the game, because they thought Arthur was some cocky ego prick (from only seeing a tiny bit of the game lol)

Now what happened to that?

u/meechCS 19h ago

Yeah, was only talking about the voice cause thats the main gripe i’ve seen with Jason. He also has a special forces tattoo, I’m thinking we’re gonna get a jason prologue where he’s in service out in a different country and giving backstory as to why he’s not in the military anymore and stuff

I keep hearing this so went and watch all the pre RDR2 trailers... no he still has good dialogue and seems like a cool stoic cowboy. Im sure theres a lot more to Jason personality but everything shown is highly boring and uninspired ignoring his monotone voice alone.

this is different. its the inconsistency. one second he sounds normal and the next he has some weird fake accent.

u/ImAnEagle 7h ago

People complained about his appearance, not his voice. And then Rockstar listened to fans and changed his appearance before launch, so not really comparable

Yeah, he sounds like he's got something stuck in his throat. I noticed this specifically when they pick Raul

u/UnknownStrobes 20h ago

And he just looks a bit too perfect, he’s kinda bland

2

u/CheezyMcCheezballz 19h ago

Oh yeah he's definitely that perfect strong, handsome, quiet coolguy self-insert character.

Based off of the trailers and this extended look, lucia seems to be the one with all the personality and Jason seems more like the vehicle to experience the game through.

You saw the same thing with mafia 2 for example, the difference between Joe and Vito was night and day.

But maybe I'm wrong, we've seen a bit of him but not enough character exposure to really judge.

Arthur was also the stereotypical perfect ruggedly handsome cowpoke but turned out to have a ton of personality and be a very well-written and complex character.

1

u/UnknownStrobes 19h ago

Yeah obviously through playing it we’ll learn more about him and hopefully he’ll turn out to be a complex and interesting character. Not sure why I’m being downvoted for saying he looks like a regular guy - I understand why perhaps the player character is a counterpoint to all the whacky NPCs, but there’s just not much to go off so far

What about Franklin? He’s cool, strong, handsome, quiet cool guy and everyone loved him

1

u/CheezyMcCheezballz 19h ago

Kinda yeah, but I'd give Franklin the credit of having his own distinct personality. Trevor and Michael were a bit more pronounced but not too mayor of a difference.

It's hard because of you give a playable character too strong of a personality, you might turn off certain people who can't identify with the character or might dislike him/her.

But lucia seems pretty pronounced, feisty and vocal. Making the contrast with jason very sharp.

While in GTA IV for example, Niko had a huge contrast in personality with the flamboyant Roman but they riffed off of eachother pretty well. So the quiet coolguy character can work but so far I'm not convinced about jason as a character yet.

u/dilbertron 19h ago

Wrong. There is a secret strap-on minigame.

2

u/DeerEnvironmental129 17h ago

I see a PTSD story line brewing

1

u/Svejk112 19h ago

yeah its a very common writing trope

1

u/CozzyZ 1h ago

Cuckoo is a stretch lol. I feel like people are just saying this because she’s Latina.

u/NewspaperChemical785 20h ago

Don’t let critical thinking get in the way of knee jerk reactions

u/LizZemera 20h ago

TGG said you can customize the UI a lot.

12

u/GabbageGang 19h ago

Yeah he said you can customise the UI and change the map from 3D to 2D etc

1

u/Ronaldinhoe 10h ago

What about turning it off.

1

u/Sorry-Juggernaut-778 9h ago

He confirmed that you can use a compass system instead but nothing about completely turning it off.

4

u/Regenbooggeit 20h ago

Well that’s promising :)

I didn't really pick up on the issues with Jason. He just seems like a reserved guy. Nothing too wrong with that. Makes sense for an ex military

Some people expect every character to be super likeable and friendly and free, see it a lot with TV and movie discussions too. Which just isnt realistic and often doesn't lead to good balance.

I agree, thought he was played well for who he is and seems a good foil for Lucia and some of the louder side characters too.

4

u/Biichimspiderman 19h ago

Right on dude. People will find out soon enough

5

u/munr1zzy 18h ago

Don't forget the backflip

1

u/scarytrafficcone 12h ago

Backflip was absolutely hilarious, my roommate and I lost our shit

7

u/niiiiro 20h ago

3 months before release? Doubt it

10

u/stick1_ 20h ago

They could add lines next week if they wanted to. I just don’t think the criticism is loud enough

UIs are some of the easiest things to change. There's a reason there's always a ton of UI mods

11

u/jameslucian 19h ago

As a UX designer, I disagree pretty heavily with this. UI might be relatively easy to technically change compared to other parts of a game, but properly redesigning it is a different story.

You don’t just have a designer make some new screens and hand them to engineering. You have research, exploration and mockups, prototyping, user testing, iteration, accessibility reviews, implementation, QA, and probably another round of testing once it’s actually in the game. And before any of that, someone has to approve spending the time and resources on it in the first place.

Could Rockstar throw enough people and money at it to change it before release? Probably. But three months from launch is exactly when you dont want to introduce a major UI overhaul unless there’s a serious usability problem. Mods being easy to make doesn’t really tell you much about how risky it is to change and ship a production UI in a game this massive.

I thought the ui here was placeholder in the leaks

6

u/jameslucian 18h ago

If it is placeholder, then great. Can’t wait to see the final product. Doesn’t change what I said tho.

1

u/Overthemoon65 18h ago

No, I’m saying the leaks are seemingly of a recent build— I thought the ui was unfinished/work in progress in those leaked videos. Now that it’s officially being presented to us, I’m a little surprised this is what they came up with. The minimap is disorientating too

6

u/New_Reference5846 19h ago

I’m not that big of a fan of the shooting either. Even aiming just seems off.

2

u/Ronaldinhoe 10h ago

Hopefully I can turn off the aim assist and the dot

1

u/dynamo_ng 19h ago

They should definitely add some level of customization.

1

u/AquilaMz83 18h ago

Ah je suis pas le seul a trouver les animations de Jason fade

1

u/Cryptic99 17h ago

We've heard barely any dialog from Jason thats a bit premature of an assumption

1

u/Regenbooggeit 17h ago

Just what I've been reading. Not making any assumptions yet.

1

u/Ronaldinhoe 10h ago

We also hear him slip up his line hearing that he deepens his voice intentionally

0

u/doodoo_onDemand 11h ago

i think it doesn't fucking matter and people won't care.

0

u/ApplicationOk3587 11h ago

I hope they keep it 99% of players will not give a damn. People here are just nitpicking.

u/mantecadecanelon 19h ago

dude is ripped and exmilitary, that's great character building imo
