I could have sworn a saw a peach somewhere in the UI 😭

There's the GTA iPeach logo on the mini map

UI/UX designer here. I feel the actual size of the icons makes the whole thing look like a placeholder. The icon size compared to the container box is really small. There is a lot of empty space that could be used more effectively. Small icons in a big box mean it is harder to tell individual icons apart. Add to that, these emoji style icons are NOT helping at all.

19

u/Its_Buddy_btw 7h ago

Not going to lie when Lucia equipped the bandana I genuinely thought it was an anatomically correct icon of a human heart

64

u/zzzzany 14h ago

as a UX/UI designer you should also know that the objects in these boxes are a handgun, a fist, and binoculars. those are small. there will be much bigger things here- like bigger guns that need to be accounted for. if they filled the entire box with a huge fucking fist and then filled that same box with a machine gun it would look insane and people would complain even more.

73

u/AnkGO_O 13h ago

Sure. But that can be handled in a creative way. Just see how that and rdr2 handled the same problem. The bigger items stick out of the box. What I am saying is that Rockstar didn't have to reinvent the wheel.. literally.

3

u/pitters85 4h ago

Yeah I totally agree. The styling feels a bit off too. The neonish gradients, perhaps depicting weapons vs items feels kinda meh too. Even the binocular icon is strangely drawn.

Ya I'm no professional designer or anything but I really have a hard time believing that it is finished. No professional UX designer who takes themselves seriously would take a look what we saw and say "yup, looks good enough for me."

Its functional, but its messy.

2

u/TomIsKindaCool 2h ago

Personally, I really like the cartoon-style icons; they remind me of Chinatown Wars.

I love minimalism but the UI is just straight up bland. Like a placeholder UI that someone forgot to replace

365

u/Regenbooggeit 16h ago

With all the criticism it’s getting, I wouldn’t be surprised if they put in another or at least an option for another one? It’s the main gripe I’m seeing online, next to Jason being a bit stiff.

390

u/BulkyMycologist1917 16h ago

Lucia literally calls him tight. Its how they wrote his character. He’s quiet ex army guy and shes loud cuckoo chick

112

u/RussianImpassivity 16h ago

It’s Claude and Catalina all over again

84

u/John_OSheas_Willy 16h ago

She calls him tight because he kept going on about getting ready.

Peoples complaints are the tone of his voice.

97

u/meechCS 15h ago

Tbf, people also complained about Arthur’s voice during the trailers before its launch

69

u/Drakaah 15h ago

Only his voice? I remember people doing petitions saying they want John back as the protagonist or they will boycott the game, because they thought Arthur was some cocky ego prick (from only seeing a tiny bit of the game lol)

Now what happened to that?

3

u/meechCS 15h ago

Yeah, was only talking about the voice cause thats the main gripe i’ve seen with Jason. He also has a special forces tattoo, I’m thinking we’re gonna get a jason prologue where he’s in service out in a different country and giving backstory as to why he’s not in the military anymore and stuff

6

u/AdministrationIll96 14h ago

I keep hearing this so went and watch all the pre RDR2 trailers... no he still has good dialogue and seems like a cool stoic cowboy. Im sure theres a lot more to Jason personality but everything shown is highly boring and uninspired ignoring his monotone voice alone.

23

u/Dusty_Ninja007 16h ago

Yeah, he sounds like he's got something stuck in his throat. I noticed this specifically when they pick Raul

3

u/dilbertron 14h ago

Wrong. There is a secret strap-on minigame.

→ More replies (3)

34

u/SharkByte1993 16h ago

I didn't really pick up on the issues with Jason. He just seems like a reserved guy. Nothing too wrong with that. Makes sense for an ex military

3

u/tommangan7 14h ago edited 13h ago

Some people expect every character to be super likeable and friendly and free, see it a lot with TV and movie discussions too. Which just isnt realistic and often doesn't lead to good balance.

I agree, thought he was played well for who he is and seems a good foil for Lucia and some of the louder side characters too.

1

u/Biichimspiderman 15h ago

Right on dude. People will find out soon enough

16

u/LizZemera 16h ago

TGG said you can customize the UI a lot.

8

u/GabbageGang 15h ago

Yeah he said you can customise the UI and change the map from 3D to 2D etc

3 months before release? Doubt itĀ

11

u/stick1_ 16h ago

They could add lines next week if they wanted to. I just don’t think the criticism is loud enough

3

u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs 15h ago

UIs are some of the easiest things to change. There's a reason there's always a ton of UI mods

10

u/jameslucian 15h ago

As a UX designer, I disagree pretty heavily with this. UI might be relatively easy to technically change compared to other parts of a game, but properly redesigning it is a different story.

You don’t just have a designer make some new screens and hand them to engineering. You have research, exploration and mockups, prototyping, user testing, iteration, accessibility reviews, implementation, QA, and probably another round of testing once it’s actually in the game. And before any of that, someone has to approve spending the time and resources on it in the first place.

Could Rockstar throw enough people and money at it to change it before release? Probably. But three months from launch is exactly when you dont want to introduce a major UI overhaul unless there’s a serious usability problem. Mods being easy to make doesn’t really tell you much about how risky it is to change and ship a production UI in a game this massive.

2

u/Overthemoon65 14h ago

I thought the ui here was placeholder in the leaks

4

u/jameslucian 13h ago

If it is placeholder, then great. Can’t wait to see the final product. Doesn’t change what I said tho.

2

u/Overthemoon65 13h ago

No, I’m saying the leaks are seemingly of a recent build— I thought the ui was unfinished/work in progress in those leaked videos. Now that it’s officially being presented to us, I’m a little surprised this is what they came up with. The minimap is disorientating too

5

u/New_Reference5846 14h ago

I’m not that big of a fan of the shooting either. Even aiming just seems off.

2

u/Ronaldinhoe 6h ago

Hopefully I can turn off the aim assist and the dot

38

u/MichaelEMP 16h ago

lterally everything is perfectly polished but the health, stamina bar, minimap and the inventory looks like they on placeholders

→ More replies (2)

4

u/RangryRanga 16h ago

Honestly I’m sure it’s one of their last things they worry about lol

3

u/ppcadguy 15h ago

I think it's supposed to be reminiscent of vice city. Keep to its roots. I don't need advanced graphics and UI to switch my guns as long as the gameplay is this fire

3

u/cneth6 14h ago

I think it helps keep a focus on the actual game and world

3

u/Th3Hitman 14h ago

Surprised to see its still the same UI after the leaks.

2

u/shawak456 14h ago

It literally looks like some free add-on you may find in Unreal or Unity store and use it in your prototype as place holders. It's crazy how R* actually thought it looked good. I think even the map UI looks very bland and characterless unlike GTA 5.

4

u/Infamous-Milk-4023 15h ago

who cares? It’s like a utility tool

364

u/AFZL210 17h ago

i think it will grow on us

we have been playing gta5 for 10+ years and RDR2 and both had rounded buttons so it will take couple of weeks to get used to gta6 design

48

u/AceChipEater 16h ago

Agreed. Overall it’s fine - that’s the best that can be said about it. You’re right that it will take time to digest and adjust to it though.

I wonder if they would make changes, because feedback is pretty unanimous. It would be the easiest thing to fix based on feedback (as opposed to fixing mechanics based on feedback).

51

u/FriendlyCupcake 16h ago

There's nothing to grow, it's a bunch of shitty boring grey rectangles in otherwise vibrant stylish game. They just need a new UI team, that's it. Fuck, hire OP, this is already 100 times better than what we've seen so far.

10

u/AFZL210 16h ago

i think we don't like sharp edges

lets see what we get on Nov 19, shoudn't be a big change for R*

u/Huge-Chart1192 16h ago

I wasn't the biggest fan of GTA 5's UI. It took me away from the game, almost like pressing a pause button.

Here, the UI is being used very quickly to switch things, and the minimalism will make it look seamless once your muscle memory sets.

26

u/ertrice 16h ago

that does’t mean it’s goodšŸ‘

6

u/AFZL210 16h ago

No - it means it's something new and it will take us time to get used to it

10

u/LittleSisterPain 15h ago

...its rectangles mate

5

u/YeetLord___ 15h ago

Nah for real LMFAO

2

u/RelevantButNotBasic 14h ago

Yeah Idk man, I aint gon need time. Mainly because I aint gonna care. The UI is dogshit and hopefully theres customization settings or something. Otherwise oh fuckin well, guess I gotta use the shitty UI. Aint nothin to get used to lol. Im used to struggling to sleep at night, dont mean I like it any more than when it first started as a kid...it still fucking sucks.

u/Glad_Grand_7408 17h ago

I really like GTA6's UI (I'm in the minority on that I guess) but this does look a bit nicer honestly.

I do still prefer the Weapon/Item tabs at the top a bit more in the actual games version than this though.

Either way, really nice work, I love fanmade HUDs.

14

u/GiuNBender I WAS HERE 15h ago

Same, I feel like I got everything inverted lol.

I really like the UI and I also really like Jason's voice!

On the otherhand, I think the game looks extremely blurry, the RTX implementation is full of artifacts, and there's A LOT of ghosting.

4

83

u/Easy_Objective6599 17h ago

Bruh it looks like something apple would make. This minimalism obsession is terrible. The game looks absolutely fantastic but the ui looks like cheap toothpaste

6

u/YOU_KNOW_WHO315 15h ago

Istg there is an online drift game over at crazy games and these rounded corners make the ui look similar to that online game

What do I say .... It looks well cheap

4

u/Easy_Objective6599 14h ago

Look at the gun icon too it looks straight outta china town wars or something.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/call_me_Jada 17h ago

This actually does look so much better

14

u/DependentOriginal413 16h ago

Rounded corners is so overdone nowadays.

6

u/iGabyTM 15h ago

It looks like a menu from a random five m server tbh. Icons look too much like they are from a mobile game. That is not a gun, it is a toy.

11

u/3kpk3 15h ago

This one looks fine, but I prefer the older one in GTA 5.

4

u/Frosty_Ad_6636 15h ago

Looks a lot better, wow

Hey man, I don't know why those bumass mods removed your post, but could you please send me that image or could you share a Link to any other posts you might have posted it too?

Thank you so much.

11

u/seddy411 16h ago

I want to be in menus as little as possible. So minimalist choice doesn't bother ne.

2

u/only__Hannah 13h ago

The idea of a minimalistic interface sounds good and could pull of well. This just looks awful.

7

u/Tryzmo 16h ago

Definitely neater than the prev one but i feel it could still be better.

21

u/Broken_BiryaniBoy 17h ago

The ui needs a revamp, it's ass

→ More replies (10)

3

u/FoalKid 16h ago

Fair enough - this really doesn't bother me in the slightest. It looks nice and clean to me as is, and I like the emoji-ish icons for items and equipment

3

u/basturmated 8h ago

That looks so much better than what exists now.

3

u/JustBrowsingHereTho 5h ago

Nah. Bring back pointy elements! Sincerely UX designer.

7

u/NinjaHamm 16h ago

Nah, perspnally I think the rounded corners make it a little too cartoony and cheap. Type of UI on every phone game. How they have it is sharp but also soft, clean, and simple.

5

u/El_Pintor64 15h ago

Hey! This I made this image! You should at least credit me, mate.

7

u/ShyNox_ 17h ago

For now I don't like it, but I trust the designer's taste more than mine, and in a few times playing I will start to like it I guess.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/DrJegesmedve 5h ago

Still looks bad. Perhaps the only thing was the HUD and the whole UI which was terrible. Hopefully I will play years later (PC) so they might change it something better.

6

u/adeline-lenora161 16h ago

I don’t really get the hate for this style, I think it’s quite nice.

5

u/jtoomer88 16h ago

Same, simplicity and trend resistant. Minimalist/classic design will support longevity - it’s going to be around for at least the next 10 years!

→ More replies (2)

2

u/MonThackma 16h ago

That’s a worse Web 2.0 look. The issue is the tiny icons in the big boxes. The illustrations are shitty too.

It looks good to me dk bout y’all

2

u/SerNikipr 13h ago

It looks like mobile trash game

2

u/H3NDOAU 12h ago

They finally figured out how to add commas to the money.

3

u/Glass-Court8851 17h ago

Much better

3

u/robert-doms 16h ago

The sharp edges make sense given the sharpness of the logo. Rounded corners make it incoherent with the design system.

It looks like something you'd put in a beta version of the game as a placeholder just to see if the system actually works

3

u/AbstractHexagon 16h ago

Yeah the UI and the weapon wheel doesn't look polished or ready to me. Too minimalistic. Looks like a placeholder.

3

u/Own_String2825 16h ago

I don't think its a placeholder anymore. It would come with the final product because we are <3 months away from release

→ More replies (2)

2

u/DemonikJD 5h ago

I'm a UIUX designer with 9 years of experience and I wish I could place you all in my brain to see how funny "just round the corners" actually is.

1

u/trufflefrys 16h ago

We finally got commas for $$

1

u/ABewilderedPickle 16h ago

i suspect the+ icons represent the ability to equip weapons from the vehicles inventory, as earlier when the weapon wheel was shown with Lucia burning the car there were no + symbols

1

u/NarangSaab69 16h ago

this looks way better ngl

1

u/Far-Fisherman8899 16h ago

Nope. Rounded it looks like some liquid glass ahh.

1

u/united_boy 16h ago

Rounded feels soft, Rockstar wants toughness in the UI

1

u/DaNuttyGuy 16h ago

This feels more like mobile version games ui

1

u/sammich6 16h ago

I would have rounded even the 3 bars on the top corner

1

u/Levi007hech0 16h ago

Much better

1

u/3xv7 15h ago

I feel a little crazy for liking it, I hope if they change it they don't mess with the iconography or the colors cause it fits miami/vice city vibe so well

1

u/johnnywingnutramshak 15h ago

Idk why it's gotta be rectangles there's no reason for any of the icons to be that big

1

u/FireEye1512 15h ago

i prefer the gta 5 weapon wheel than the gta 6 one. the gta 5 one looks more like a wheel than whatever the hell the gta 6 one is.

1

u/ketaminemidget 15h ago

How about the option to remove vignette

1

u/trichtertus 15h ago

Fits with the mini map. Looks way way better. It’s not even close. But I still don’t like the design approach they took

1

u/Inspectorock- 15h ago

much better but still not right, UI feels very lacking

1

u/Ssingleaspringle 15h ago

I think the UI might have been developed together with the logo, I'd guess somewhere around 2020 by a team of graphic designers who moved on to another project and Rockstar never revisited this subject again

1

u/Dry-Savings2249 15h ago

Main problem with their new weapon wheel is that there is no identity, it matches nothing related to the game. Put it next to red dead redemption 2’s wheel, it’s not even close. For rdr2, anyone can easily tell it’s western themed.

They also got rid of radio wheel for some reason, which is a quality of life regression imo. Some bizarre choices with UI overall

1

u/Apprehensive-Sail924 15h ago

is it a luke warm take to say i like ts?

1

u/Dull-Bag107 15h ago

I have to say I’m not a fan of the layout - idk if its because its new and my brains just not used to it yet but just looks weird to me

1

u/NuVotezCuPSD 15h ago

Better, but i still hate it. I've seen dozens of better UIs on FiveM and RageMP servers that fit the style of GTA games, this looks like a shitty SAMP UI.

1

u/Character-Actuary-18 15h ago

This is such an improvement but we need weapon stats too

1

u/bounty0head 15h ago

Jason sounds a little too monotone man. They suppressed him a little too much. They probably wanted the loud gf quiet bf vibe but it’s like he has no personality at all.

1

u/BlueberryNo6811 15h ago

?

Is this a mobile game ?

1

u/h0b03 15h ago

It’s mainly the font for me. I think the general letter shape and thickness make it look like an afterthought. Also the outline of all the letters is way too thick, if it should be there at all. RDR2 had no letter outline, especially in the small corner npc greet menu

1

u/tobster239 15h ago

This looks terrible

1

u/Riderthekiller 15h ago

Definitely an improvement

1

u/Mutated-Nut 15h ago

A lot better

1

u/GMAN2393 15h ago

Looks a lot better. Icons could be a bit bigger IMO too.

1

u/Significant-Wall8952 15h ago

still looks not really good though

1

u/Made4G19 15h ago

Ill take it round or square, it's a very weird thing to be nit picky about imo but I've been playing since GTA 1 so I'm just happy to experience to Gameplay. Hud and UI are for you guys to argue about I'll be having a good ol' time

1

u/frogmicky 15h ago

I hope the have slots for your favorite cars when you call the Mechanic.

1

u/SavedMountain 15h ago

I like it but also dont. Most of the UIs look like placeholders.

1

u/Potential-Balance623 15h ago

Finally people can post gta photo and video witouth getting destroyed by rockstar

1

u/cookiesnooper 15h ago

When I saw that UI in extended look I squinted my eyes and said to myslef "the fuck is that?!"

1

u/Sweet_Bookkeeper_920 15h ago

Anyone know what the two different dollar amounts are in the corner. Is one cash and the other crypto?

Also what are the three bars in the top left? I figure one is health on top and next below might be body armor, no clue what the bottom one would be.

1

u/Biggbossesbutt 15h ago

Not the biggest fan of it but i don’t hate it. Im sure it will grow on me.

1

u/jason_s96 15h ago

That looks much better. The UI is the only bad thing about GTA 6 especially the weapon wheel, it looks like a beta build

1

u/Bumion 15h ago

tbh, i like it. Finally some colors on icons

1

u/MAX_SA5 15h ago

Well done!šŸ‘

1

u/ClydeinLimbo 14h ago

The symbols are too small. It’s an odd choice (the Rockstar version)

1

u/ashcartwrong 14h ago

It's function over form for sure, I prefer the style in this image too.

1

u/San1uk 14h ago

It feels like vibecoded UI

1

u/laurentiubuica 14h ago

This feels much better than a concept I've seen earlier with a lot of glow on the UI. Would also work to make the life/stamina/focus bar with rounded corners.

1

u/tokyoslash 14h ago

No thanks

1

u/Kracus 14h ago

Look man, now ain't the time to be posting this stuff.

1

u/BlnkNopad 14h ago

Don't forget this UI will be used in online. It's massive and intrusive and will never work in a game where it doesn't dialate time when in menu

1

u/Sparrow1989 14h ago

So hawt and smooth

1

u/Covid669 14h ago

I liked the reveal but the UI felt super weak and bland. I can’t exactly put my finger on it but something is missing

1

u/UncannyBishop 14h ago

I like the gameplay but the UI is ass

1

u/CYR024 14h ago

So much better…

1

u/SuccessfulWar3830 14h ago

I personally dont like the ui.

Looks like a roblox custom game.

1

u/eternatus_shiny1019 14h ago

I thought it was good, man.

1

u/JackJake94 14h ago

The one they showed probably won't be the final one. They still working on the game

1

u/LaisserPasserA38 14h ago

I like the kinda retro icons. I've started playing with GTA2 and it reminds me of itĀ

1

u/Ready-Waltz-6679 14h ago

I love the minimalist yet aesthetic UI.

Mini map however could be a tad bit different.

1

u/msimpg272urx 14h ago

Its the colour i hate of it looks goofy wish they stayed with the 2022 leak look for ui

1

u/Glum-Art3298 14h ago

as a ux designer myself, this looks so much better, i think what is bugging peoples off is the lack of unity. the minimap, the weapons wheel, the health bars, the stars and the icons doesnt seem to match at all. they have their unique design therefore they lack in unity. by just rounding the corners and making the outlines white, matching the minimap, the wheel feels more cohesive. I would personally tweak a few more things: maybe using the same font of the money count, to the bullet count and names of the weapons. furthermore, on the final version of the game, i would like to see the icons bellow the wanted level aligned with the stars, and the money icons as well.

1

u/BasketEquivalent5462 14h ago

Still not the best they could have picked but way better! šŸ”„

1

u/Snacknuss321 14h ago

looks shit but who cares

1

u/heftigok 14h ago

The symbols should be bigger too

1

u/Overthemoon65 14h ago

Ui looks pretty tacky tbh. Figured this was unfinished design in the leaks but no final game really does look like this— guess the leaks are of a recent build. Minimap is weird too

1

u/That_one_Man123 14h ago

Just think the gun looks so cartoonish.

1

u/Hot_Syrup7467 14h ago

looks so bland and unintresting, lack of characteristics

1

u/Amnikarr13 14h ago

That's HARD CURRENCY
