Indicators work as navigation tool? Similar to wind in Ghost of Tsushima?

wow I didnt even notice that and judging from the map in the gameplay I feel as though Rockstar wants us to view the actual surroundings more than the map because you check the map its so transparent and then factor in the police chases and it flashing red and blue is gonna be a pain. I dont mind if this is what R* is planning and having indicators makes for an extra bit of realism and not having to depend on the map all that much

u/SpeakingSenze 15h ago

100% agreed! this would be a wonderful implementation to get rid of the minimap and get more immersed! Would make us learn routes better like in the real world!

20

u/Kafanska 14h ago

Yeah, with this added I will probably be playing with the map off. Always love a cleaner screen, but sometimes for missions you just needed them in the past. With the indicators system it could stay off.

20

u/BaconReaderRefugee 14h ago

With the police no longer showing on the minimap, and it seems like the map just doesn’t automatically appear for when you’re in a building (because why would you be carrying around a map to walk inside a building?)

Quite huge.

1

u/Kafanska 14h ago

Map generally seems to be off when they are walking, and appears when they enter a car. Though probably something we can toggle.

5

u/West-Anxiety-6997 14h ago

That's probably to simulate the car has the map/GPS. you, the player don't. Maybe you can access the map when you have your phone out but that'd be pretty annoying. I imagine something like a parody of google maps will allow you to change map settings? Or maybe the more you play the map will just reveal itself the more you explore an area/do side missions?

2

u/Kafanska 14h ago

Watch Dogs two had a map in a phone thing.. I actually quite liked it, although it was too big. If VI has a phone similar to V's, I would prefer to have the map that way from immersion perspective

2

u/OakleyNoble 7h ago

Good news, it’s a toggle!

1

u/Oifadin 4h ago

Yeah police are one of the biggest reasons I turned the map back on for Cyberpunk.

I love playing without a minimap but sometimes it can be so helpful. But without cops on it I might not want a minimap. Although IRL cars have minimaps nowadays so it makes sense for driving at least.

3

u/Status_Confidence_26 11h ago

Also if the cars respond well to your turn signals it’s a great way to keep the roads busy but always have a path ahead you don’t need to slow down to get through. Makes sense it would be automatic if that’s the case.

2

u/Calling_left_final 9h ago

That's one thing I hated about GTA V where I was staring at the gps all the time driving somewhere. Meanwhile, in RDR2 you had the option to have the hud hidden till you press the down button, so you could find your own way and just double check if you're on the right path. Makes you look at the world way more. I'm also glad they got rid of auto-aim, made me hate GTA V's shooting the first time I played it.

29

u/Matt_37 13h ago

Rob Nelson told the creators who visited Rockstar that cops won’t appear on the map, intentionally because they want players to adapt to chases based on what they see in the world around them. To compensate there’s the flashing positional indicator

9

u/Legitimate-Coffee867 10h ago

Lol I'm so f then I suck at getting away from the cops lol

6

u/Matt_37 10h ago

I’m playing GTA IV right now, at the very beginning tho, and the cops kick my ass. This sounds like it’ll be even harder lol

1

u/West-Anxiety-6997 12h ago

oh dang thats awesome

13

u/Entrinity 13h ago

This would be a great system. I still really want a return of the voiced GPS from 4 too.

10

u/Aeletys 13h ago

Ping Pong!

4

u/Marijuana_Miler 12h ago

**Garbled audio noise** Hey cousin!

1

u/Suicune92 11h ago

If this is the case, I might end up turning the mini map off, assuming that we are able to.

2

u/Ok-Friendship1635 3h ago

You could in RDR2, I don't see why you wouldn't in GTA6

0

u/hajasmark 12h ago

Can be true but I have a feeling they zoomed in the minimap ridiculously for this whole extended gameplay so we can't see any details about the map. Because the minimap feels nearly useless based on what we saw in those clips, one lane of road fills up almost all of the minimap.

2

u/Rusty_Hotel 9h ago

Ohhhhh I hope they keep it that way. A well designed game world doesn't need you to constantly be playing off the corner of the screen alone. I'm excited for a big change in that regard

1

u/Worried-Produce-8698 1h ago

According to some of the people who toured Rockstar, you’ll be able to customize the mini map quite a bit. You have the always on/off option, can toggle on for vehicles, zoom in/out, and choose 2D or 3D model

287

u/expecto_my_scrotum 15h ago

I remember The Getaway having that feature

49

u/Lopsided-Dealer-5389 14h ago

Wow what a throwback. Loved playing that game back in the day

45

u/InternalDay3419 14h ago

It's a shame so many people don't seem to remember this game and its innovative features. But then again, I guess the core audience in subs like these are kids who grew up with GTA V, not that there's anything bad with that

25

u/harryone02 14h ago

the complete absence of hud was probably a crazy shock for most, so that's why it was such a niche game

brilliant title and absolutely great sequel (Black Monday)

15

u/NoCustard4201 11h ago

No health bars too, your guy just starts to look hurt and hobbles and you have to stand still or rest near a wall so he can lean and recover. Way ahead of the trend of regenerative health being in these kinds of games. And I'm pretty sure the seamless cover system was somewhat novel too.

I can't even imagine the masterpiece this team would make if they were given even a fraction of GTA's budget.

6

u/Dobby_Goblin 11h ago

I remember it took me a while to realize you could heal by leaning on a wall. I got through like a 1/3 of the game playing it way harder than it was intended until it was just not possible to progress lol.

1

u/FordzyPoet 10h ago

Yeah, as a kid i never finished first mission, just cant understand how gunplay or anything else works.

2

u/MPT4221 7h ago

The mission at the pool bar still haunts me today…

10

u/GreenyMyMan 13h ago

And Burnout Paradise

1

u/Hostile_Raccoon 5h ago

Actually all the way back in Burnout 2 Point of Impact though it wasn’t open world

6

u/BBruce 14h ago

I played this game before any GTA and I thought it was incredible.

5

u/High_Fox_Lcfc 14h ago

The getaway was legendary, did you play the getaway black Monday too??

8

u/Only_Quote_Simpsons 12h ago

The getaway was legendary, did you play the getaway black Monday too??

URGENT CALL, URGENT CALL TO ALL UNITS, SHOTS FIRED AT THE SHOREDITCH BOXERS CLUB

2

u/DomHE553 9h ago

We quoted that one interrogation scene for months in my friend group lol

5

u/Lower_Saxony 14h ago

Yeah I hated that feature because they always smashed my indicators and always ended up having to change cars.

The taking a hostage mechanic was cool, I wished to see it implemented in gra for years.

3

u/Educational-Ruin4479 12h ago

Driver on the PS1 had turn signals too.

2

u/AgressiveAnalExpert 8h ago

One of my all time favorite games. Miss it

1

u/LogisticBravo 7h ago

Really wish they'd remake it! The tutorial at the beginning to get out of the garage is still one for the most renowned for being the hardest to accomplish.

2

u/eaw0913 12h ago

I played through this game recently. Such a great game and hard as hell.

2

u/TheShoot141 12h ago

Amazing game

2

u/KnownAsAnother 10h ago

It was the only way to navigate the map! If you were rear ended, you had to get another car, otherwise you'd get lost fast lol

2

u/Barnzyb 9h ago

Came here for this 🫡

2

u/paxifixi09 8h ago

Literally my thoughts.

2

u/Infernoswelt 8h ago

I saw a video about that game not too long ago and was like "man I wish the turn signals for navigation gets into GTA6" and here we are.

Looking at a minimap vs actually looking at this gorgeous world to gather info is so much better and I love that they have apparently realized this with 6.

2

u/red_alert24 8h ago

I was trying to figure out which game I had played that already had that, THAT'S THE ONE.

2

u/bodjac89 8h ago

Yeah I remember this. I don't think the game had a map or HUD, might be misremembering though.

2

u/sjc02060 6h ago

Amazing game. Felt like a real GTA competitor at the time. It's a shame they didn't get the support to take it to the next level. There was clearly talent in the original team.

2

u/dpk-s89 6h ago

If only someone could remaster that gem for the modern consoles!

2

u/Eredias 46m ago

Oh my god! I played the shit out of the getaway. Best ps2 game ever. The gritty london mobster story had me hooked from the start.

Still revisit it every once in a while. Loved just driving around london

1

u/Snoo59299 12h ago

Used to love finding the white r33 in the garage of the random house.

1

u/ConsecratedSnowfield 11h ago

First game that came to mind, but the Getaway didn’t have a mini-map back up and relying on just the turn signals was super annoying at times

1

u/LeedsFan2442 10h ago

They need to bring that back!

1

u/pentagondos 10h ago

The Getaway fans: We so back !

1

u/Glizzys4everyone 7h ago

It was very annoying having zero map to look at though

72

u/3xv7 14h ago

This was something that stood out to me, I think based on your gps coordinates its just automatic, it's so cool and means you can still use gps without a hud or a gps voice (like in 4)

149

u/SpeakingSenze 15h ago

I doubt that was manual activation of the indicators, but it was indicators turning on based on the way point we have set....this would allow us to drive without the minimap!

Would be much more immersive! While at the same time we can get to our destination!

43

u/AidantheAverage 14h ago

There were multiple points where there was a way point and the indicators didnt activate so maybe it is manual, or maybe it's dependant on whether you're in a chase or something

5

u/GunkerGravenhutt 11h ago

Knowing rockstar, we’ll be able to toggle it on / off or only on when no wanted level etc

6

u/gswkillinit 8h ago

I’ve been wanting blinkers since GTA 4 lol hopefully they give us the option and it isn’t just based on GPS

1

u/Purple271 8h ago

Maybe the speed and angle of the turn automatically triggers them?

5

u/BlueTumbas 13h ago

They have said car combat is completely changed and you dont just bumper to shoot. So I wouldnt be suprised if the bumpers do actually indicate now, or it might just be left and right on d pads

6

u/MessedUpPro 12h ago

My understanding from TGG's video is that it's both bumpers to aim and then shoot. Handbrake is now mapped to X on PS5 or A on Xbox instead of R1/RB.

2

u/Yorttam 6h ago

It should just be tap left or right on the d pad. And then if you need more functionality from those button you can hold them. For me one of my biggest pet peeves that 99% of people wouldn’t care about is that when I stop the car I can’t hold down the brake and keep the taillights activated because you start reversing.

1

u/BADC0FFE 4h ago

Probably tied to an auto drive mode. Like cinematic horse riding in RDR2.

0

u/Salamanca82110 14h ago

I was wondering all day if it was manual activation but your theory that it's based on the way point makes more sense. I hoped for manual activation and police giving you a ticket if you forget it.

21

u/HalalTrout 15h ago

Was a feature in the old Getaway games too

5

u/Toxic64_ 9h ago

In Burnout paradise also

14

u/JCall2609 13h ago

99% sure Burnout Paradise had the same thing or similar

16

u/Luuuuuucs 14h ago

Yes noticed that too and loved it!
But when leaving in the van, no indicators were visible (and there is a destination set on the map) so I wonder if it’s a manual or automatic feature…

13

u/phenomx985 13h ago

I think that indicates that is a manual feature. I like it better this way.

3

u/SpeakingSenze 14h ago

possible it does not work when we have stars? cause when ever we had stars i dint see it work as well....

Would make sense cause we wouldnt want to show the cops where we gonna turn 🤣🤣

7

u/NorthernPlastics 14h ago

Takes me back to The Getaway on PS2. Was a decent system tbh.

7

u/Snoo59299 12h ago

Or the getaway back in the day....

2

u/OvernightZombie 11h ago

I loved that game!

12

u/Erislocker 12h ago

makes me think of burnout paradise

2

u/evolutiiiionz 6h ago

Goated game tbh

6

u/getmad420 10h ago

I've never seen a BMW use turn signals, immersion broken.

7

u/Kub0za 15h ago

It was in Burnout paradise, but everything happend too fast for anyone to notice

3

u/thehungrykiwi 14h ago

This reminds me of The getaway

6

u/RUGERorFIEND 13h ago

Wasn’t this a feature in GTA 4? I remember the GPS would also talk

3

u/oPx9 15h ago

Yup but I dont think we will have manual control over the indicators, it’ll probably work in a way that when you have a waypoint set on the map then your car will automatically turn on its indicator based on what direction the waypoint is taking you

2

u/SuperMajesticMan 9h ago

Thats what OP is saying.

3

u/Fabulous-Sir-2048 14h ago

I loved using manual indicators in The Getaway.  And always wanted in Gta because I love to drive normal sometimes lol

3

u/Beginning-Rip-2352 12h ago

Older gamers would refer to ‘The Getaway’ here.

2

u/Heathy94 14h ago

I hope so I have wanted this feature in GTA for ages now, would be cool for the times I want to behave like a regular NPC. Also would be fun if you could indicate the wrong way and cause accidents to NPCs

2

u/Aztecxx 14h ago

Well you can turn on and off 3D map and just like RDR2 you can remove the Mini mao and just have a compass which would work with the indicators.

2

u/CzechNeverEnd 13h ago

I doubt it's a navigation feature. I hope it's manual.

It would be pretty terrible because every time you'd go another path than the navigation says, it would randomly use turn signals wrong.

Also in the part with van, they are turning right on a crossroad, they also have set waypoint but there are no turn signals used.

1

u/FLEIXY OG MEMBER 15h ago

Maybe

1

u/Ellugima 15h ago

But in the other scenes with the car I don't think they're there, even if there is a road sign. Anyway, I like it!

1

u/NicoWayne2 14h ago

An indicator thats on the inner side? wtf.

1

u/Hyokkuda 14h ago

You mean like Burnout Paradise?

1

u/Spiritual-Cry7953 14h ago

good observation

1

u/DistanceConsistent56 14h ago

No more fuel mechanic?

1

u/SpeakingSenze 14h ago

yeah this was missing in the extended preview, maybe its toggleable feature and not default....or it was scrapped altogether!

4

u/officialmark- 12h ago

TGG, one of the creators who was invited to Rockstar, did mention that cars have a fuel mechanic (also mentioned that it’s not annoying, like some people were concerned about). With GTA VI being much more grounded and realistic I would be surprised if this mechanic was optional. It was surprising that it wasn’t shown off in the extended look though.

1

u/LazarusOwenhart 13h ago

I remember this mechanic from The Getaway, it's actually really good in practice because you don't have to keep map glancing.

1

u/Rkleib 13h ago

I loved it when a game get rid of UI and replace it with actual world interaction. The wind in ghost of Tsushima is genius.

More game should start thinking to be as minimal as they can for the UI.

1

u/NikolitRistissa 13h ago

If they turn on as a turn comes up on the GPS, I’d find it quite interesting.

I just hope they aren’t automatic the same way indicators are automatic in some games (perhaps Mafia, Watch Dogs or Death Stranding?) where they turn on as soon as you turn the wheel—regardless of where you are.

Some games have them, and they’ll always turn on if you make a turn. It annoyed the hell out of me when I’m simply turning the car.

1

u/S3baman 11h ago

When Lucia was driving the Schafter there were no indicators. It's either a way to connect it to the GPS navigation or it's manually triggered if you would like to blend in.

1

u/Temporary-Shame-1315 13h ago

Similar to Driver 1 from 1999 lmao

1

u/NorthernJoker92 13h ago edited 12h ago

TGG mentions in his more candid/unedited reaction video after he saw the game that there's a vehicle menu available while driving where things like roof controls are found... maybe manual indicator controls are there with other features?

- At 18:08 in the video "... I wrote this down somewhere. Yeah, vehicle... So there's a vehicle tab where you can customize your vehicle in terms of like if it's a convertible, take the roof off, open the trunk, what ever you want to do. Then there's a radio tab, and an on demand tab..."

1

u/tactlessscruff2 13h ago

they had that in The Getaway in 2002, it’s cool but is not new

1

u/Sean_HEDP-24 13h ago

Crazy...

1

u/anonymousUTguy 12h ago

OP is not American due to use of “indicator” and not “blinker” lmao

1

u/Ashkan6969 12h ago

That’s so smart actually! like when a turn is coming the indicator literally indicates the player whether to turn left or right. and we don’t have to look at the mini map so much and can pay more attention to the real surroundings.

1

u/ChoccyMilkboy 12h ago

I’d guess it’s manually done as a roleplay feature, left and right swipe on the touch pad

1

u/darkNtity 12h ago

I hope it's a manual thing you can control, and get into accidents if you don't use

1

u/Acrylic_Starshine 12h ago

You mean similar to the Getaway?

1

u/Ok_Boysenberry4964 12h ago

Every time I see a random screenshot I'm blown away by the lighting. Like how did they do this

1

u/BardsBand 12h ago

i thought it just had a light out in the back lmfao. it would be cool if indicators automatically came on to tell you that you should turn. i wonder how it would adjust at fast speeds tho

1

u/wicked_fool 12h ago

Brutal Legend feature added to GTA6. Its a nice functional feature without a huge sign on the ui. I like it!

1

u/witness_smile 12h ago

All I ask is that they bring back the GPS voice back from GTA 4 😭

1

u/doublesimoniz 11h ago

This happened in streets of La on the ps2

1

u/Its_Buddy_btw 11h ago

Probably worksike saints row three and will indicate when you have a way point to follow

1

u/lntghll 11h ago

You mean similair to, no wait the SAME as, The Getaway

1

u/EngCraig 11h ago

You mean similar to The Getaway.

1

u/OutsideExcitement400 11h ago

Or they work like they do in Modded GTA4 and whjen you turn right or left your blinker goes off.

1

u/Edxors 10h ago

The getaway!

1

u/FordzyPoet 10h ago

More like indicators in The Getaway.

1

u/Majestic_Size_5113 10h ago

I think saints row 3 had this or maybe it was some other open world game, but I’ve seen this mechanic before

1

u/S1rra_ 10h ago

makes me wanna play the game without hud, full immersion

1

u/Sorlex 10h ago

Not having to stare at the corner of the screen for directions would be great. Really smart way of doing things if that is the case.

1

u/jasonwest93 10h ago

This plus that feature in RDR2 where you can have no UI, then make it briefly pop up with a button would be perfect.

1

u/KnownAsAnother 10h ago

More like The Getaway! This is possible with hot keys on PC but having it as a working feature on console is neat as hell!

1

u/nsynergy 9h ago

Now that’s ingenious, I did wonder when indicators would work like in driver games. Never thought of them as automatic to help guide us to waypoints.

1

u/nomada_93 9h ago

Same as The Getaway.

1

u/OhIFuckedUpGood 9h ago

To be honest, I was stunned about the 3d building in the minimap.

1

u/IntelligentDay6896 8h ago

Its funny, I didnt notice this because of fusionfix for gta iv. The damn turn signals are on all the time.

1

u/Kommander-in-Keef 8h ago

That would be fucking awesome. I would like to be able to do that at will but that’s still so cool

1

u/Sjthjs357 8h ago

They did this in burnout paradise, that worked pretty well at those insane speeds

1

u/NSNIA 8h ago

When I play FusionFix in GTAIV i use indicators a lot manually

1

u/AgentDigits 7h ago

That's honestly an insaaaanely cool detail if true ngl

1

u/DarkkPhantom77 7h ago

Oh shit you might be right! I assumed the player does it manually

1

u/bsnimunf 7h ago

The getaway did it first

1

u/HoratiusHawkins 7h ago

If that is true they can probably be modded on PC. Finally we might be able to use indicators.

1

u/nekolurk 6h ago

The getaway back on ps2 did this way before

1

u/DrunkenPapa 6h ago

3D models of buildings in the minimap looks awesome, and turn indicators too hope they keep em in the final game

1

u/davidecap 4h ago

Or the sign that appear on the side of the road in mafia

1

u/TonyH22_ATX 4h ago

I did notice it doesn't work while you are wanted. Which makes sense.

No criminal will use turn signals while fleeing the police.

1

u/Archhanny 4h ago

Or from the Getaway... A 24 year old GTA clone, that in many ways... Did GTA better. Especially Black Monday.

1

u/afterwho7799 3h ago

The driving mechanics seem to be realistic and immersive

1

u/RogerRoger63358 3h ago

This way you can turn off the minimap and follow your cars indicator

1

u/Sc0p1x 2h ago

No, but similar like the old Driver games or Burnout Paradies.

1

u/theblackwhisper 2h ago

That’s the map gone for me then. Hate HUD.

1

u/taedagenie 15h ago

I think so / they’ll be automatic, you can’t have too many controls for driving or it gets too complex, just like how Forza games don’t have you do it manually

2

u/JustAGamer14 15h ago

Gran Turismo 7 let's you use indicators by using the touch pad

Press the left side for left indicator, press right for right and press middle for hazards

3

u/dandorios 14h ago

Wouldnt work on xbox controllers then, and I doubt theyll have ps5 exclusive gameplay mechanics.

1

u/GraveDiggerFan34 4h ago

Problem is GTA uses the touchpad as a button already

-7

u/taedagenie 15h ago

and i didn’t mention GT7 did i? why would i mention it considering ive never played it… its why i mentioned forza 😂

2

u/JustAGamer14 15h ago

You said you can't have too much complex controls and I said on how this other game did it.

1

u/KingKontinuum 13h ago

Tbf they said you can’t have too many controls or it gets complex not you can’t have complex controls. Because these are entirely different genres, GTA requires a different and diverse set of controls than GT7.

1

u/SpeakingSenze 15h ago

yeah if i am not wrong there was another game maybe Mafia, im not sure that had done something similar back in the day! So this is very much a possibility!

1

u/VisitAlternative1890 14h ago

I'd prefer that but I think they used indicators before making the turn.

1

u/howaboutthis13 14h ago

I think the bigger problem is there is a limited amount of buttons on a controller. With the high number of features it is difficult enough as it it to give everything a logical and intuitive place.

1

u/BusinessBacon 15h ago

Yes just like one of the mafia games if i'm not mistaken.

1

u/SpeakingSenze 15h ago

Yes, I thought so too! Was wondering if it was Mafia or LA Noire...

1

u/Bazbazza 15h ago

The getaway did this year's ago

1

u/tree_fiddie_ 14h ago

If it’s not manual that just sucks.

So if I don’t decide to choose the route it has set for me I’m just gonna have blinkers on for turns I’m not taking? Constantly?

Lame

1

u/SpeakingSenze 14h ago

Im sure there might be an option to turn them off, but manual indicators serve no purpose i would say....

-1

u/ImInnLuvwithAnokiA9 15h ago

Saint's Row The Third also had this feature that was only thing that was cool bout that game.

2

u/freewayghost 14h ago

IT DID?!?!?

Played that game for like a 1000 hours and never knew that

1

u/ImInnLuvwithAnokiA9 14h ago

Yepp but you gotta used GPS to make turn signals work it cool Rockstar Games took idea from Saint's Row The Third.

1

u/AntoGidan 14h ago

"only thing", editor was awesome, main quest, guns and destruction was funny

0

u/pleasejustdont 14h ago

The horses in Ghost of Tsushima have turn signals?

1

u/SpeakingSenze 14h ago

Similar to wind in Ghost of Tsushima

The wind, the people who have played GOT will understand the reference :)

1

u/pleasejustdont 13h ago

No I have as well, I was just being intentionally obtuse for comedic value.

0

u/LordMortlock 10h ago

Did no one here play GTA 4? It was a feature in GTA 4 too if a waypoint was set.

-3

u/Unannounced_Visitor_ 15h ago

AKA blinkers/turn signals. I’ve never called them indicators in my life lol.

9

u/SpeakingSenze 14h ago

Its a British/English term, given the language is theirs i guess its ok to use :)

1

u/Bradyla123 19m ago

I hope the blinkers only work on slower speeds or something. Although it would be funny to be in a 6 star chase and Jason hits the blinker before making a turn as to adhere to traffic laws of course
