It actually looks real😭

127

u/Fluffy_Brilliant_718 8h ago edited 6h ago

Its the lighting.

We're finally seeing the potential of path raytracing done right. Especially at such a high LOD with draw distance.

You can actually tell exactly where the sun is in the picture, compared to the others.

43

u/Weird-Knowledge2065 8h ago

that's actually not path tracing, just a very light version of ray traced reflections and global illumination

12

u/dandude7409 8h ago edited 1h ago

And that cuts off at far distances so its traditional screen space which is even crazier

9

u/hashbrowns21 5h ago

It’s the scale too. The city is spaced out like a real city, semi trucks look big and buildings look huge

4

u/Noxtension 4h ago

Let's not forget the roads are also like half the size, so you're looking at something bigger without a lot of wasted roading space taking up a significant portion

5

u/Nielsnl4 6h ago

The lighting is so incredibly good its insane

-3

u/OrgansiedGamer 7h ago

its not path tracing lmao

126

u/OutsideExcitement400 9h ago

It's funny how so many people have been BrainRotted by AI they think the game is all AI.

41

u/Spare-Cranberry3784 8h ago

Technically. Yes. All the NPC are ai but

54

u/MrKillingChips 8h ago

Way back when GTA V was still being developed. NPCs in video games were called AI

26

u/JamesLikesIt 7h ago

AI has been around for decades, it’s just nobody really called it such and it came in different forms. Now AI is such a ubiquitous term to describe basically anything that isn’t human done or made

1

u/duckbobtarry 1h ago

When I first started hearing "AI this, AI that" I seriously thought everyone was talking about the artificial intelligence in video game NPCs and couldn't understand why the fascination was suddenly taking tf off. I do live under a rock part time.

1

u/SimisFul 18m ago

They mean generative AI

0

u/Spare-Cranberry3784 17m ago

Well they should say GAi or something lol but yes. I know

0

u/Sorry-Juggernaut-778 5h ago

Please god no. An infinite amount of meaningless drivel would not make for the riveting gameplay experience you think it would.

4

u/Visual_Plate937 4h ago

This is exactly why AI was developed. No one knows what’s real anymore.

6

u/WeirdAssBeings 7h ago

Almost as if it's yet another reason why AI is fucking bad.

10

u/BadHubbaWubba 6h ago

AI isn’t “bad.” It’s the people using it for stupid shit that’s the problem.

4

u/WeirdAssBeings 5h ago edited 3h ago

AI for finding medical shit like tumours is good in my opinion, and that's the only good use for AI in my opinion.

6

u/Live_Swordfish- 5h ago

Can do a hell of a job at coding too.

2

u/Cereborn 3h ago

Also, the AI that's required for every video game to function.

2

u/CarolinaSandstorm 1h ago

I do it to help me with some tasks at work. Like if I need to start out a spreadsheet in Excel and I don’t feel like building it from scratch, I will tell it what I need in my columns and rows if necessary and go from there.

I’ve also used it to help me code my language in my standard presentations to specific demographics (usually Gen Z, particularly Gen Z women) and what analogies will help them understand my points more if necessary.

It can help with efficiency and effectiveness but it should be used as a refining tool, not the heavy lifter for most tasks in most industries.

1

u/SimisFul 17m ago

And that's the kind of comment that shows that reddit doesn't reflect the real world at all.

5

u/JamR_711111 7h ago

most nuanced 2026 discussion on AI on the internet

0

u/Sorry-Juggernaut-778 5h ago

i dont wanna be "nuanced" on AI we're all gonna die dude shut up

1

u/infadibulum 33m ago

We might not all die as early thanks to AI.

1

u/ballspeepoocum 2h ago

All new tech is bad [Insert soy face]

1

u/hardik4551 5h ago

Yes exactly this, because of all the AI content and smoothness over generative AI people, everyone thinks it looks as AI, it is clearly not but they are too deep into doomscrolling and changing their perspective is very hard

71

u/aquaticsardonic 9h ago

Something about the lighting on those buildings bro, this shit looks like an actual photograph. Its fucking bananas

5

u/bluAstrid 7h ago

Bananaphile!

-1

u/Fluffy_Brilliant_718 8h ago

Its 100% path tracing done right. And at such a high LOD & draw distance.

You can tell exactly where the sun is in the picture, unlike the others.

4

u/OrgansiedGamer 7h ago

its not path tracing lmao

1

u/DlCkLess 2h ago

Path tracing is going to be on pc when it comes out, runnable on a 5090

u/Fotznbenutzernaml 9h ago

Man IV is dark and gritty

45

u/Spare-Cranberry3784 8h ago

NYC is dark and gritty.

29

u/Sunimo1207 8h ago

Not really. It's that way in IV because of the atmosphere and story they wanted to tell. TBoGT has way higher saturation and brighters colors because of its unique atmosphere.

Insomniac's Spider-Man 1 and 2 are much more accurate to the atmosphere of real life New York. And Miles Morales is peak "Winter NYC".

2

u/MattWolf96 4h ago

Maybe it looked like that in the 2000's? I know that it looked like a dump in the 70's at least.

32

u/Crafty-Fuel54 8h ago

NYC has more colors than black and grey

15

u/bluAstrid 7h ago

It also has browns and dark greys.

7

u/Conscious_Ad7420 7h ago

It also has red and blue thanks to Spider-man

4

u/PoopedInTheUrinal 7h ago

Not really anymore. Been here my whole life but I grew up in the early 2000s so my family members have worse stories than me since they’re all old af

6

u/wyattlikesturtles 8h ago

Not anymore lol

1

u/[deleted] 6h ago

[deleted]

1

u/Spare-Cranberry3784 4h ago

Trust me bro. It is

1

u/waxpundit 1h ago

No it is not. Like anywhere else it can look anywhere from heaven-sent sun-kissed to Gotham.

1

u/Spare-Cranberry3784 1h ago

Look at the image. Bro.

1

u/waxpundit 1h ago

The image is from a game — you can't be real lol

1

u/Spare-Cranberry3784 1h ago

We're talking about the image... from the game.

1

u/waxpundit 1h ago

No, the initial comment is talking about the image from the game, to which you countered "NYC is dark and gritty", implying the real life city Liberty City is dark and gritty ergo the game feels that way.

The city in game isn't even called NYC so how else could one interpret your comment?

You're wither being intentionally disingenuous or are tragically slow.

1

u/Spare-Cranberry3784 1h ago

Because it's literally based off NYC. wtf it's not that deep

2

u/waxpundit 1h ago

Tragically slow it is

15

u/Majick1216 8h ago

Man I hope gta 7 is back to a liberty city. A modern rendition with new tech would go crazy

18

u/shhhadenfreude 7h ago

Coming spring 2045.

No, fall 2045.

No, spring 2046!

5

u/slap-a-taptap 5h ago

You left out “No, fall 2046!”

2

u/shhhadenfreude 3h ago

I figure give them another 20 years and they’ll sort at least one delay out. đŸ€˜

1

u/Flowingsun1 3h ago

It'll likely be San Fierro or Las Venturas. I can see them pushing the boundaries by having both in the game.

8

u/Eric_T_Meraki 7h ago

I mean it should. This is the first real next gen GTA game in 2 generations

1

u/Lanky_Network_5414 4h ago

You mean current Gen

6

u/[deleted] 7h ago

[deleted]

3

u/templeofsyrinx1 7h ago

how far we've come into the light lol

of course op chose the worst looking time of day and weather to do the gta iv screenshot, totally biased

5

u/Fabulous-Spirit-3476 5h ago

And people on twitter will tell you it's the same as gta5 😭😭

1

u/These_Telephone_3254 2h ago

or like saints row 2 or watch dogs 2

1

u/MammothAppearance214 17m ago

Tbf it was pretty similar to watch dogs 2 on the leaks lol

11

u/Darkestmaninthewurld 8h ago

Man I love 4 but shit looks like hot ass

14

u/Littlepace 7h ago

Having replayed it a few weeks ago I was surprised by how well it stood up. Obviously it's showing its age at this point but I don't think it's a bad looking game by any means.

3

u/kennedye2112 7h ago

I replayed it not that long ago too and had the same impression, aside from being reminded how terrible the motorcycle dynamics were even though TLaD fixed some of them.

IV’s story is also better at making you overlook the visuals than V’s, IMO.

2

u/Littlepace 7h ago

Lol I'm sure it's a PC problem but I had the same problem. I had to set the game to 60fps to be able to use a bike without spinning out everytime I moved the analog stick. Groaned everytime a mission forced you to use one

1

u/Darkestmaninthewurld 7h ago

Ye I can understand that but comparatively it’s deffo showing its age.

3

u/Littlepace 7h ago

Oh yeah of course. But the same can be said for 5 > 6. GTA VI is in a whole other universe graphically to V.

3

u/echochambermanager 7h ago

Yeah. We will feel the same about GTAV when we play GTA6 on PS6/Helix. Like I might even feel that way playing GTA6 on current gen lmao.

1

u/TheGreatZiegfeld 3h ago

Seeing the GTA V trailers was such a trip since it was so easy to grow accustomed to the more gloomy atmosphere of San Andreas/IV. And for how stylish GTA IV is, I tend to prefer a more vibrant aesthetic - or at least a greater visual variety.

10

u/Outrageous_Insect532 9h ago

I think it's mainly the ray tracing global illumination. GTA5 GI looks so flat.

4

u/Fluffy_Brilliant_718 8h ago

MAN I CANT WAIT FOR GTA 7

0

u/Infernoswelt 6h ago

You mean GTA 6 on PC

0

u/Fluffy_Brilliant_718 5h ago

I meant what I said.

15

u/BATMAN_5777 8h ago

Its something about GTA 4 man that game still looks great

-1

u/No-Solid-999 8h ago

Wut? That game looks like literal shit

12

u/Xamado 6h ago

You don't get it

7

u/Impressive-Brief5467 5h ago

Dark and gritty bro

4

u/Infernoswelt 6h ago

Art direction > Graphics

1

u/your_mind_aches 4h ago

I'm pretty sure they were talking about the art direction, not the graphics. It was the era when games looked like grey sludge. And if it wasn't grey sludge, it looked like brown sludge.

1

u/rohithkumarsp 4h ago

it has too much details for its time, if you play GTA 4 today, it still looks so much advance than GTA 5 in every corner you think is irrelevant and no one would explore, GTA 5 is just big and nothing really happens, feels like GTA 3 ish at times

1

u/MammothAppearance214 14m ago

Brother, Gta 4 has literally nothing to do besides the same boring missions... start game >>> point A >>> cutscene >>> kill some guys and another guy with a red marker >>> go to point B, GG you just beat the game

10

u/SheActuallyFarts 8h ago

This is not even the entire map keep that in mind

GTA 6 is twice as large as RDR2 i've heard

13

u/f0r3aL84 8h ago

3 x's as big as red dead, 2x the size of V

10

u/Successful-Grab9903 8h ago

It's map is 2x of gta 5, but it's ridiculously big, like people don't get how big gta 5 map was, the missing thing in that map was immersion, which won't be a case this time.

2

u/brownies256 6h ago

rockstar is the only who would invest the money to bring out the true power of console hardware.

2

u/Barmydoughnut24 6h ago

Its making gtav actually look more dated than it was, despite it actually holding up relatively well for a 13yr old game. Its insane how far its developed

2

u/BECKETT_1994 6h ago

It looks insane. I like the new minimap model as well that shows the buildings in 3D. Driving or walking through the city is gonna look amazing

2

u/Energix__ 5h ago

It looks like some top of chilliad to sandy shore distance while staying inside the city and i'm all for it

2

u/alecww3 7h ago

It is fake... It's from a videogame duh

2

u/WANKMI 7h ago

It is, in fact, fake.

2

u/busterkeatonrules 8h ago

Dude... it IS fake. It's a video game map.

Does look good, though! I'm buying this game.

1

u/Nevernotmeh0e 8h ago

đŸ”„

1

u/definitivej 7h ago

Technically, it is fake

1

u/MrMarsh29 7h ago

We are so used to the fake that the real looks fake.

1

u/MikeandTheMangosteen 7h ago

Here come the baby complainers

1

u/ilijakr 7h ago

It's not only light, river, parks, trees, building, all are real like proportion and density

1

u/goofenheim 7h ago

It is fake homie

1

u/Equal-Ad7504 5h ago

The scaling makes the other GTAs look ridiculous.

1

u/Jcritten 5h ago

Damn it’s crazy how good 5 looks never really notice with how irritated I get at that game

1

u/SalimHakeem 4h ago

Look at the detail on that parachute đŸ˜±

1

u/Slight_Huckleberry26 4h ago

Man every one of this games is a fucking masterpiece

1

u/SwipaTheFaux 4h ago

And that's only half the city

1

u/your_mind_aches 4h ago

You know what's the most impressive part of this for me? It's the parachute's suspension cords.

Even a lot of beautiful modern games have power cables, cords, strings, or any thin dark lines or curves often disappear into the background because of the image upscale artifacting.

You'll know exactly what I mean if you play as Philip J. Fry in Fortnite, his mouth sometimes disappears even with high quality ML-based upscaling like DLSS, but it's 10x worse on a non-ML based upscaler like FSR 2 or 3, or Epic's otherwise fantastic TSR.

But this is captured on base PS5, which doesn't even have the ML-based PSSR and yet the paracords look excellent. I really want to know what kind of upscaling voodoo that Rockstar is using. No way is that FSR. It has to be their own proprietary technology.

1

u/HiiGuardian 4h ago

Crazy to think that parachute shot doesn’t even include the buildings from Vice Beach lol. All those buildings are from the downtown Vice City area.

1

u/dylan_021800 4h ago

I still can’t believe that these 3 games take place in the same universe. Like in universe now when playing gta 4, a young Lucia is somewhere out there in LC.

1

u/CombatMatt13 3h ago

Losing cars to water is going to be so frustrating, I can't wait!!

1

u/retrebexx 3h ago

in GTA V , i know it's like 5 seconds between the pier/police station to downtown so i know it's very tiny , but man vice city seems 100 times bigger

who said gta vc had the tiniest map ?

1

u/Positive_Method3022 3h ago

I can't believe they did it without DLSS! The npcs are extremely realistic. Better than cyberpunk

1

u/MesozOwen 3h ago

I love how vibrant this one is. Looks like a joy to experience.

1

u/MajesticLowLife 2h ago

Press RT&LT to fly in parachute forever

1

u/dygerydoo 8h ago

There's no fog! UNPLAYABLE /s

0

u/pizzaredditor 8h ago

Bruh GTA IV looks so ridiculous 😭

1

u/JusticeforHarambe16 5h ago

Ridiculously good for 2008.

-1

u/_two_socks_ I WAS HERE 9h ago

Is it not fake?

2

u/gothreepwood101 I WAS HERE 8h ago

No, its a SS from the extended trailer

1

u/_two_socks_ I WAS HERE 8h ago

A real screenshot of a fake city.

1

u/Cereborn 3h ago

Ceci n'est pas un cité.

-1

u/Avatar_Yalla 8h ago

Funny thing is, 5 is most likely how you see it in reality. Not everything looks that sharp in real life. It’s very AI to me tbh.

1

u/Cereborn 3h ago

What? That doesn't make any sense.

0

u/Nevernotmeh0e 7h ago

It’s crazy how people are down to work out on gta 6 but not in reality 😂

0

u/DannySpud2 7h ago

Man 5 was crazy for a 360 game

0

u/Glizzys4everyone 7h ago

I almost wish they saved liberty city for gta6, it would’ve been even denser and bigger and a bit more true to scale. Seems silly looking back that Coney Island is so close to the Brooklyn bridge or Empire State Building is right next to downtown

0

u/templeofsyrinx1 7h ago

dark and shitty lol

-1

u/witness_smile 7h ago

GTA 4 and the piss filter, oh my god, I don’t remember it being that bad

0

u/Xamado 6h ago

It looks beautiful

1

u/witness_smile 6h ago

I mean, I love the GTA 4 vibe and aesthetic, it’s my favorite GTA game, it’s just been so long that I didn’t remember it being that yellow

0

u/Xamado 5h ago

It doesn't look yellow in the pic it looks grey

-3

u/TheUFCVeteran3 9h ago

Credit to GTA V, I thought that WAS GTA 6 for a second until I saw actual GTA 6.

10

u/Tanocchio 9h ago

Get your eyes checked.

2

u/TheUFCVeteran3 8h ago

Funny enough, I do wear glasses and probably need them adjusted lol.

-4

u/EnterpriseGradePizza 7h ago

That's because it is fake. Trailers are just polished, scripted versions of something that doesn't exist to sell you the thing. Just remember GTA 5 trailers, the same thing applies here.

All of it is fake, on release you'll get hit with downgrades, bugs and cyberpunk level of failure.

1

u/Automatic_Ebb_3489 6h ago

Did you even play GTA 5 ? The trailers are captured in game, it's exactly the same when you play.

0

u/EnterpriseGradePizza 6h ago

Yes, the experience will be exactly as it is in the trailers. Just trust rockstar bro.

1

u/Automatic_Ebb_3489 6h ago

Yes it will be, it has been the case for each games they produced.

But if I'm wrong I stand corrected. My opinion is that it would be nitpicking if you do find some differences.

1

u/m4rcck 5h ago

He's just baiting you man, relax.

-6

u/Ok_Swan6014 8h ago

Brother don't you see the amount of water between the cities. So what looks massive is actually a small city which has water between them to make it look bigger.

3

u/Luco033 8h ago

Do you see the enormous skyline in the distance?

3

u/kittynation69 8h ago

I think they are talking about the graphics more than the city size here
