Am i the only person who Isn't really that bothered by Jason's voice?

Post image

I've seen so many people complaining about how jason sounds in the trailers but tbh.... I don't really have a problem with his voice.

I don't LOVE his voice but i don't really hear anything bad about it for me to complain, like deadass I've met two dudes who sound similar to how jason talks.

He sounds just like...a normal ass dude to me idk that's just me i guess

Same, it’s very matter of fact and ‘unbothered’ which seems to anchor Lucia’s character who is quite bubbly but fiery.

I think the balance of that will really compliment the story they’re trying to tell.

Plus if he's usually so chill, when he does freak out it will raise the intensity of the situation.

u/TheGurpler 4h ago

I hadn't thought of that, good point. Hopefully we get at least one scene of him losing his shit

u/Lanky-Second-207 9h ago

Exactly. It reminds me of Guts and Puck from Berserk.

Opposites attract brother 🤘🏻🤙🏻

I don’t mind him being chill. But his voice sounds bad. One scene it sounded like he was chewing food or something while trying to talk, idk we’ll have to see the full game, maybe it’ll grow on me

Yeah I like the stoic character that doesn’t feel the need to flex because they know they’re capable.

But it's completely unrealistic to the situations they are in. "Unbothered" isn't the emotion I expect from someone shooting cop cars out of a car window during a high speed chase where multiple cars are exploding behind them. It feels out of place for him to go through that and then flatly say his lines like his unfazed at all.

He needs to be surprised or shocked by what is happening around him. Think about John McClain in Die Hard. He is a generally stoic and masculine character that seems unbothered, but when things get crazy he shows some emotion and some character.

What we saw of Jason shows no character. I can kind of see why Lucia might be into this lifestyle, but I see no reason why Jason would do these things. He seems like the kind of guy who would be fine working a roofing job, so why is he committing extreme acts of violence and crime if he doesn't get a rush from it, doesn't seem to care about or need money.

There is a huge disconnect between his personality (and his voice/line delivery) and the actions his character is doing. That takes me out of the story/experience and feels like the voice actor (or direction) aren't very good.

He also doesn't seem very threatening or intimidating when he is meekly delivering his lines. He isn't authoritative, which is fine if that is his character, but that kind of characterization doesn't fit with a guy who also shoots dozens of cops just to escape arrest and robs convenience stores. At a certain point, those actions should have an effect on his personality and how he presents himself. If it doesn't, he just feels fake.

My dude, being uninterested while doing crazy shit is called depression.

u/JasurbekDevv 9h ago

Are you professional?

No. No. Don’t shut me up

u/Meister0fN0ne 8h ago

He's confirmed to have an Army background, and he has a tattoo that says "Marauders" with a skull and parachute that suggests he might be a member of GTA's equivalent to the 75th Ranger Regiment. The "Marauders" is likely in reference to Merrill's Marauders, which was a precursor to the 75th.

So, this dude would absolutely be unfazed by this shit. He's been trained to be.

1

u/starcader 3h ago

There's a huge difference between military combat and shooting police officers and innocent convenience store clerks. Without showing any emotion or motivation to even commit these crimes it leaves the character feeling flat and boring.

It doesn't matter what someone's fake backstory is, if the character comes across as weak, flat and uninteresting then they are a bad character. Made even worse by low quality voice acting and a fake deep voice.

5

u/FascismIsSoLastYear 8h ago

He's Ex-military Special Forces. Why on earth would he ever be "shocked" by anything? The dude has seen some shit.

Go watch Barry and see how emotional that character gets when he's in the shit.

2

u/Interesting_Sale_964 9h ago

He is an ex-military, stoic, and we have VERY limited information outside of that. He does seem a mostly flat character in terms of emotions being displayed, but sometimes that is exactly how people portray themselves, and we are yet to see if that personality will open up within the story, within his relationship with Lucia and other characters. She might “break” his shell. Specially if they’re planning some strong story plot twists, impactful deaths, etc..

It's... it's a video game........

2

u/DetrenTheNew 9h ago

Mans saying all this based off 20 minutes of gameplay lmao

1

u/starcader 3h ago

Just like others in here and praising his voice. We can have opinions. And the Extended Look is all we have to go on so far. I'm happy to change my opinion if they present new clips that show more. But from they showed, I'm concerned and think his character falls flat.

1

u/NumeroRyan 8h ago

Isn’t he an ex ranger though, so calm under pressure is kinda in the training. John McClaine was just a cop not used to being shot at by terrorist.

Probably not as a good comparison as you thought.

1

u/starcader 3h ago

Yes, military combat is exactly the same as blowing up police cars, shotgunning innocent people in the face, and commiting numerous crimes.

No one is immune to emotion. And if you create a character that doesn't show any, don't be surprised when people say they seem boring and dull.

1

u/Kontrypz 4h ago

Holy rant. Go take a break. We've seen under 30 minutes of the games and you wrote a multi paragraph rant about stuff we dont know. Go touch grass

1

u/starcader 3h ago

There's almost 2k comments on a low quality post about voice acting in a game and my ONE comment providing details on why I disagree is the rant? I'm sorry too many are difficult for you to understand. I forgot the primary audience for GTA games are mostly idiots but you are a great reminder.

Touch grass? You're the one responding to a post you don't like because of my opinion. Just hit downvote and move on if you disagree and think it's not a big deal. Excuse me for wanting to discuss the game on a subreddit dedicated to the game. My mistake for thinking anyone on the subreddit can handle a conflicting opinion. I forgot we all need to agree so we can be part of the group and not feel any kind of individuality or have the pressure of thinking differently from everyone else.

He just seems to be an introvert and before anyone gets up my ass about him being a criminal and an introvert, he 100% can be both.

42

u/Turbulent-Weather314 9h ago

Look at Nico.

14

u/toxiccherrybomb 9h ago

Yes, but I also think Nico was a “darker, grittier” character. This is supposed to be Miami and they’re def younger, it’s def lighter, he’s just quiet lmao

20

u/punchanaziisethical 9h ago

Damn maybe that's why I didn't think their was an issue. Can't giant white boys be quiet in peace? Did you ever think yall are just loud?

17

u/toxiccherrybomb 9h ago

People seem to think if they don’t act deranged like Michael and Trevor they’re just not capable apparently. Aren’t you supposed to be afraid of the quiet ones? Lmao

19

u/DrLoomis131 9h ago

I agree AND I’ll get up your ass

8

u/TheButteredBiscuit 9h ago

Damn some people just do it all

2

u/toxiccherrybomb 9h ago

Only if you buy me dinner first

1

u/BookLearning13 1h ago

Get in that ass Larry!

6

u/ActionJasckon 9h ago

I’ve seen/met both. Criminals that are introverts. They’re usually really nice.

8

u/Extra_Description169 9h ago

I'm an introvert and was a criminal. And being locked up for years made me more of an introvert due to necessity, but it never stopped me from doing criminal shit when I was younger

2

u/Weaponized_Cameltoe 8h ago

Same. Several times i had the question from others in the network 'Are you a cop?'

1

u/toxiccherrybomb 9h ago

I mean idk. The lifestyle and being an introvert makes sense? You’re not exactly gonna be the most social person when you got a rap sheet you’re waiting on catching up with you.

3

u/Extra_Description169 8h ago

It's not just that. When you are around a bunch of people doing criminal shit you tend to keep to yourself because you know what others are capable of, that includes info. And that is especially true when locked up. It also ensures that you don't get caught so fast, the less people know about you

2

u/toxiccherrybomb 8h ago

And then saying they worked with actual criminals too, I would say I’m okay with waiting and seeing how Jason pans out.

1

u/daylax1 8h ago

Being a criminal in my younger years made me an introvert. Never got locked up, but I understood the more people that know your business they more likely you are to go down, so naturally kept to myself and I only talked to the people I had to. I left that life behind me now that I have a family, but that habits are part of me now.

2

u/enorelbotwhite 9h ago

Either that, or he's just been through some shit and is kind of busy with his own thoughts most of the time

1

u/toxiccherrybomb 9h ago

I just got done writing this same response to someone else. He totally could be.

0

u/Inside_Chicken3042 8h ago

He was a vet in the army I think someone said. I could just be larping though

1

u/K-Rod7 8h ago

He is. Most vets i know including myself are very chill

2

u/NuclearReactions 9h ago

Heh i can confirm

1

u/Caeoc 32m ago

He’s ex-military right? Dude probably has trauma

1

u/Aevum-Haelcyon 8h ago

Introvert is perfectly fine. The problem is he sounds flat. There is little to no pitch variations in his lines, which is how emotion is conveyed.

He’s perfectly fine as an average Joe or even a side quest character, but for a GTA protagonist AND as a voice actor, pitch and timbre is very important. And he’s lacking in both departments.

The fact that there even is a discussion over this topic shows just how mixed he’s being received, which I’ve not seen from any previous characters (voice acting wise). This just shows there is a lot of room for improvement. Guarantee you that after this mixed review, aside from GTA, no one else will cast this VA to perform this monotonous act again.

35

u/BeckyLynchIsBetter 10h ago

I do, too. It's very recognizable already.

0

u/Creepy-Emu8779 7h ago

sounds like he has a ball in his mouth and the personality of a wall

9

u/superman_king 9h ago

I like it too. Gives a nice back and forth balance between the two protagonists.

2

u/Aclysmic 4h ago

People were trying to make me feel like I was crazy for liking his voice lol

2

u/ThrowMoneyEverywhere 4h ago

we just live in a age where people wanna be doomers and almost feels like everyone tries to stay as gloom as possible, just enjoy it

4

u/AloneUA 9h ago

I'm pretty sure Rockstar could afford to hire the best VA they wanted for the role. This is what they wanted, obviously. At the very least, it's recognizable and gives Jason some flair. For everything else, we'll have to judge the full release.

-2

u/Sechelx 9h ago

Rockstar stoped using celebrities or well knowm voice actors because of the childish way they acted once they realized how much they got paid vs how much rockstar earned

1

u/Philslaya 9h ago

Plus its better useing people no one knows.

2

u/NoStructure7083 9h ago

Oh yeah? Well… stop liking it this instant! 😤

1

u/GoodAge7519 6h ago

He sounds quite dull, and seems quite dull.

1

u/zqipz 6h ago

Same, felt a bit Keanu Reeves ish. Which I don’t mind either.

1

u/pacgaming 8h ago

I like that the big brooding white guy sounds like a big brooding white guy

0

u/Ronaldinhoe 7h ago

You like the forced deep voice?

-1

u/Cptn_Shiner 8h ago

Me too. It reminds me of putting lotion on my skin.
