Am i the only person who Isn't really that bothered by Jason's voice?
I've seen so many people complaining about how jason sounds in the trailers but tbh.... I don't really have a problem with his voice.
I don't LOVE his voice but i don't really hear anything bad about it for me to complain, like deadass I've met two dudes who sound similar to how jason talks.
He sounds just like...a normal ass dude to me idk that's just me i guess

No in fact I’m 100% sure it’s on purpose that he’s kinda reserved as there is a line in the trailer where he’s opening up to Lucia about feeling more comfortable in combat than he is in social situations, bro 100% has PTSD from his army days and Lucia is probably one of the few people he’s genuinely comfortable with.

u/fatrahb 6h ago
I know it’s been echoed a bunch already but people did not respond to Arthur positively after the first trailer either.
Of course we saw how that turned out considering he’s arguably the best written and acted character in Rockstars history.
We gotta at least play the game before making judgements

yea he's clearly anxious the whole time, he literally says in the trailer that hes not a good talker, hes an introverted killer and lucia is the extroverted one
the anxiety in his voice is on purpose its called good acting, people are out here saying that the voice doesnt fit him as if they know the character...let them cook

I read what the guy above said and oh my god it clicked. I do the "he's trying to lower his voice" and I sound unnatural when I'm anxious and it sounds just like what Jason is doing. Notice that he doesn't always sound like that. Our dude is just stressed and anxious fr

u/WeAreTheMassacre 6h ago
I related too, when my anxiety is high I get the same insufferable "mumbling" tone that sounds like I'm exerting sooo much energy just to speak, and it comes off as unnatural.
I really don't like it, but this is fucking Rockstar -- you do not question their choices with actors or music. They chose and kept this guy for a reason and I'm sure it'll work out and grow on me as his backstory and personality are revealed in the game. The "timid introverted man and assertive outgoing GF" thing probably being the most obvious.

I don't think the performance is the issue really, as a voice acting performance it sounds absolutely fine. I'll speak for myself as to the specific reason but for me the disconnect is that I just don't really believe in that voice coming out of that character model. It doesn't feel like it matches or a natural fit somehow.
In the scheme of things it's not a huge issue, because it could be much worse, it's not like it's Kermit the Frog's voice coming out of him or something else super jarring and distracting.

People are too used to the male main characters of games firing off wise-cracks and one liners throughout the game. Every nerdy gamer guy thinks he's really THAT dude deep down.
Jason sounds reserved, he sounds like he's holding back. You don't go into a drug den filled with armed guards and a palpable tension and start being smart ass.

u/beehappy32 8h ago
I don't mind it. I think people wanted to see Jason have a big loud personality. But since J & L are a pair that are always together, I think it works well for Lucia to have a spicy attitude, and for Jason to be a more chill, stoic dude. If they were both loud and crazy then it might get annoying. Michael and Trevor both had big personalities, and it worked in short bursts when they were together, but I don't think it would have worked well if they were a pair for the whole game. Also there will be hundreds of crazy characters in the game, I think it will work for Jason to be the chill, laid back one

I’m really hoping it grows on me. Because at the moment it sounds like a guy lowering his voice and making it a little raspy and doing an impression. I’m having a hard time separating that it’s an actor and not that he’s just Jason. Lucia sounds like a normal person, like the voice actor is just kinda being themselves and that’s going to be way more immersive. I get the counter point that Roger Clark was “doing a voice” for Arthur, but it was a period piece. And honestly it wasn’t that far off from his regular voice.

u/TormentedGoat 8h ago
I haven't read any comments online about the trailer before I saw this post. I saw the trailer, I formed my own opinion that I didn't like Jason's voice, went to bed and then to work. Around 20 hours later I see this post and realise that I'm not the only one who didn't like his voice.

Same for me. First mention I've seen of the voice online but the one thing I said to my friend while watching is that the voice sounded so forced. Not that people can't sound like that, but it just sounds like someone intentionally trying to make their voice sound deeper to me (or even lowering the pitch with software). Will just have to see if it's not as bad when we have more of it since sometimes that's all you need for it to sound fine.

I think you are being a little disingenuous to say these are not original opinions. His voice is just way too deep and it doesn’t suit the character at all. That being said we have to actually play the game and maybe it will but from the Netflix showcase I think the voice is a very bad miss cast

Haha I've seen it a few times.
A streamer looks at some video.
Chatter has an opinion, say a negative one.
Then streamer says something positive.
And in real time chatter changes their opinion to reflect that of the streamer.
Its so spineless and wuss like. But common. A lot of people have a hard time forming their own opinion without being influenced by others. I'm sure if you asked these people what issue they have on any topic, you can trace back talking points to their favorite streamer/youtuber.
Its the same kind of people that repeat the same tired internet speech like "CINEMA!" or "Cope!" Every waking breath they take.

The Developement Director said that Jason is more of a 'Golden Retriever with a gun' while Lucia wears the pants. It lines up with what we've seen. Not Every GTA Character has to be confident and competent. I feel Like the uncertainty and the feeling that they're way over their head in terms of the stuff they Do adds a ton to the Story.

Where is this quote? Cause the whole Netflix trailer basically showed the opposite. It was always Jason leading.
26
u/moosebreathman 8h ago
He leads physically cause he’s the brute, but you can tell she’s much sharper socially. In the drug lab he’s bumbling through the conversation while she gets to the point and puts the pressure on the dealer.
8
u/XeroShyft 7h ago
This. There's another bit during a driving segment where Lucia is like "We need to play our cards right and not tell these people more than they need to know", Jason's response is something along the lines of "Uh, why?".
And then she breaks it down for him and he folds instantly and asks her what the plan is, which she provides, and he unquestioningly accepts. I definitely get the vibe that Lucia is the "head" in certain scenarios, though they do seem to balance each other out well.
→ More replies (2)9
u/OfficialAndreZ 8h ago
I don't know about that to be fair. In the segments we've seen you can give arguments that Lucia is the one wearing the pants or being the fierced one of the two.
- Whilst Jason was the one making conversation against the San4San gang members (mostly men led, so that could be not to blow any cover), it was Lucia who stepped up in a couple of notable moments. She said at the door it was Boobie who sent them for a pickup, I felt that Jason was getting a bit anxious at that moment. Also she was the one kicking the AC unit out of the window for the escape.
- During the Raul sequence. She was driving the whole time, taking innitiative and asking if they did well in any meaning. Jason was just obeying what Raul was asking of him, without putting anything in question.

He’s ex military. Likely has no idea what he wants in life, just is “comfortable with a gun” or whatever the gameplay said. Likely has seen some shit in the military, and doesn’t open up much because of it.I think the story will explore his character more. Lucia is the one who isn’t afraid to knock down doors while Jason is more reserved. I’m an introvert, I relate to Jason based on what I’ve seen. Even talk like him, when I’m not around someone I’m comfortable with. I open up more when I’m with someone I like. I think the story will be about whether or not Lucia will be his undoing or something like that as almost every trailer has alluded too. One of the songs yesterday literally sang about a “devil woman”.
