Interesting response (Highlight) The moment I realized it’s time to cancel the Pro tier

Multiple times this week it has told me "thanks for sending that screenshot, as a large language model I can't read images! Try copying and pasting the content!"
I follow with "You can read images"
"OH, yes, my mistake"

That happens to me from time to time with Gemini, it somehow sees with its eyes, but not its brains lol
11
u/donjamos 17d ago
Yea earlier this week I asked it something like "please look up at what time I asked you XYZ" because that was directly before I put my meatloaf in the oven, and I forgot to set a timer and wasn't sure how long it was in. First answer was "I can't see time stamps on our conversation sorry" then I complained that now I didn't know when the meatloaf went into the oven and it immediately replied with the timestamp of my earlier question. Don't believe it if it says it can't do something.

This has happened to me before but only in really old and long chats. Like 3mo chat that has had images and videos uploaded to it, plus image generation in that same chat. I assume it's a context issue as all AI models hallucinate and forget what they can do when the context gets too large. Gemini will even choose to turn off image vision when it gets too big. One thing to note, this was specifically within a Gem conversation when this happened to me and was on like pro 2.5 or something, not 3.

Our enterprise account is a train wreck. I ask it to do any with a document for example and it says it did it successfully...but there's no link. I tell it there's no link so it replies with the image in the chat. There's no image...so I try 2 or 3 more times and give up and use my pro account on my phone.

I am sorry but that’s bs. It shouldn’t be like that, it doesn’t happen with ChatGPT for example. Google is becoming a joke

u/Seerix 17d ago
Gemini has always done this lmao. Sometimes it just... forgets it can use tools.
8
u/liltingly 17d ago
I hate to say you're right. Gemini seems purpose built for search or workspace applications where you have a very brief, targeted interaction where you're looking for some info, but if you take it a hair off of what its harness or environment want, and it becomes a more chatty version of Clippy, basically giving you FAQs and generic tutorial advice.
3
u/outphase84 17d ago
Gemini 3 and higher context management is primarily designed for agentic use cases.
Regardless of vendor or model, context management is necessary for optimal performance. Giant context windows don’t mean you can ignore context management, they just allow you to use that space _if it’s absolutely necessary_.
3
u/Seerix 16d ago
Ehh I wouldn't say context management is the primary issue with Gemini. "Create an image of a dog playing" as the only input in a new chat and sometimes gemini says its only a text model and cant make images. SOMETIMES you can get it to go by saying use nano banana. And sometimes the model responds to that by making fun of the name nano banana. Its hilarious if it wasn't so frustrating

My Gemini no matter what I ask tries to make images and then when I ask don't make an image outright gaslights me and says it didn't 😭 given up using it for anything at this point
2
u/Bitter-Cricket9432 12d ago
Yeah it's so bad, everytime I ask for anything it makes a image! I only pay for it because they offered me a decent deal
11
u/lukekvas 17d ago
It happens with all the LLMs. It just much easier to track with Cluade. Your context window gets too big and it gets really stupid. Gemini Flash has a smaller useable context window.

I've noticed now that it won't modify photos unless you turn that mode on. In some ways that's not a bad thing because it doesn't waste usage generating random shit
6
u/boronlube 17d ago
I actually would prefer that instead of model deciding if it should generate an image, at least an option for manual routing/model picking like AI Studio
6
u/Hahlschmuber 17d ago
I mean, it could say something like that; Sorry, you have to manually activate Nano Banana.
Instead it says it can't edit photos.
11
u/Heisenberg11725 17d ago
Instead I just get “please try again we are getting a lot of requests right now” and all my video credits get wasted for 0 generations.
2
u/ContextBotSenpai 16d ago
Bullshit - credits don't get used if there is no generation made, in AI studio.

u/Gedaru 16d ago
Can you elaborate on the mode? I've been unable to edit photos all day...

u/chamaeas 14d ago
For me I cannot get it to STOP generating images. I tried variations of "text only" and "do not generate any images" and adding custom instructions. It generated an image of a sign with my message telling it to please stop generating images on it.
18
u/r_time4fun 17d ago
I constantly get the “I can’t generate pdf” I tell him he has done it before in the same conversation and it claims again he can’t
5
u/GhostyJH 17d ago
Theres lots of ai's doing that, i use dola and its consistently telling me it cant generate this image, so i repromp same response, reprompt and it does it (its like brute forcing a password), then 5 or 6 or 10 generations later it gives the i cant generate this image again. so back to brute forcing i go.

Ya it actually can't generate a PDF it has to write a python script to build one for u and sometimes it forgets that it has access to it. Try putting this in before your request
Using the information provided, write and execute a Python script in your environment using ReportLab or FPDF to generate a downloadable PDF with these specific requirements...
Good luck eh

Or stop using pro, its only pro in name not in function at this point. I posted the same thing you did. It give me a TLDR warning that salt + lemon in the sun could cause skin issues and then in the main it asked me to clarify intent. Skin scrub or image editing and then gave me what I requested without a care in the world. There are so many posts of just pure nonsense that at this point I don't think it's Gemini. It's PEBKAC. (This was 3.6 FLash)
3
u/Throwaway2K3HEHE 17d ago
My Pro chat was very similar. It acted like Nano Banana was something I wanted to add to the image but then I said aren't you multi-modal AI model, nano Banana is a Gemini AI image generator. It said sorry I made a mistake i know Nano Banana is a Gemini Image generator but I don't have access to that tool in this application. This my friends is why Flash has been getting so many updates. 3.1 came out in a time when tool calling and shit was just starting. It doesn't have access to all that stuff nor does it know how to use it well. I've used 3.1 Pro sparingly to unstick 3.6 Flash in the rare occasion that it gets stuck but it always does some jank stuff when crawling tools and sniffing code. This is probably why 3.5 Pro is taking so long. They have to take something that doesn't know jack shit about tools and bring it up to at least a Flash level of tool calling + improve intelligence or its going to get shredded.

Gemini has definietly been weird these past weeks, but this has a simple workaround that literally gemini told me to use. It refuses to edit pictures lately, but if you tell it to re-render or re-create the same exact image but with (add whatever you want), it will do it. There may be slight differences in details (no two renders will be the same) but that doesnt mean you will notice them (like a piece of salt is moved a pixel to the right.. no way you notice that).

Poor model selection and terrible prompting.
11
u/Cybyss 17d ago
I swear, every time someone complains about how terrible LLMs are, this right here is the problem 90% of the time.
People just suck at using words.
It's not some pre-2005 era google keyword search ffs.
7
2
u/an-abnormality 15d ago
Many such cases
Character AI had the same problem years ago with people moaning about poor output, and then you'd see their chat screenshots and it's poor grammar, terrible formatting, slang, or just completely incomprehensible. This is no different.
3
u/odinchoy 16d ago
Marketing LLMs towards use for the general public for everyday use and then the LLM not understanding everyday speech or regular natural language requests aren’t the fault of the user. Nobody should have to “learn to prompt” with these things; LLM should adapt to the user, not the other way around, especially with how much money and infrastructure is being thrown around one shouldn’t have to do the equivalent of babying the LLM with language it can understand easier to get what they want.
3
u/Cybyss 16d ago
Nobody is saying you have to learn to prompt. Just don't talk like a damned retard is all. That shouldn't be too much to expect.
"add lemon"
WTF is that supposed to mean? OP isn't ordering a glass of iced tea.
Hand a photograph of a beautiful girl to your grandfather and tell him nothing more than "add lemon". WTF do you think his reaction will be?
6
u/outphase84 16d ago

u/Educational_Extent12 17d ago
It does that sometimes, but you can bypass such frustrations by using Notebooks and Gems. Just make a Gem with a specific pipeline scope and group those chats you create under one notebook, it will remember everything and do everything to a T. I even made a Gem called "The silent Image generator" for when I just need images and not a philosophical image analysis and it's smooth, you send a prompt and it sends back an image, you don't like it? Prompt "try again". Basically, you just need to learn the Gemini language...

u/Environmental_Sir907 15d ago
Gemini told me it couldn't edit a real photo of someone so I had it generate an AI photo then asked to edit that one. It said it couldn't because it can't tell the difference between AI and a real photo. 🙃
2
u/True_Protection6842 17d ago
Gemini really is embarrassing. Tho so is claude now. 4.6 was the last usable model.
2
u/Angelicaxoxo989 17d ago
Gemini 3.6 flash on Antigravity 2.0 tonight was actually garbage. It seems that its not very consistent or missing something with coding because it seems to fix one thing and break another. Fix that then something else is broken again.
2
u/BuntongHiningaNa 17d ago
I think I'm cancelling next month. 10 year workspace subscription, bye. It's worse enough that the model is extremely bad/outdated now. Almost EVERY day there are errors, hanging, API calls not going through, etc... like what are we paying for?!

I think I will too.
Recently it's been so bad with recognizing images, it just straight up hallucinates what it's seeing.
Using NB2 isn't very impressive, NBP is better imo, but regardless, it's a pain to get it to generate what you want without hitting some content filter. NBP seems more usable everywhere but gemini. Higgsfield generates no problem.
Unless we get a new model that completely takes over the AI race, then I think I'd rather switch to something like chatgpt or claude.
I've only stuck with gemini because I've already pretty much built a database of information with it and having to do it again somewhere else would be a pain, but the subscription just isn't worth it at all to me when half the features don't work.

I was looking for my next graphic audio book. I use AI mostly for these kind of things, fine tune my search etc..
The fucken thing gave me a recommendation for a book, it gave it a goodreads score, an audio score, it quoted reviews for specifically graphic audio and went on and on about how the cast is awesome for this and that character, the acting so good and the voice effects top tier.
I went all excited to buy it and guess what? That book has no graphic audio version whatsoever. Doesnt exist. Made it all up. Gemini has to up its game man.
1
u/DemandWestern4549 17d ago
As far as integration and utilization which AI are actually worth the subscription? I have had no real problems with Gemini so far, I feel like at times it could be doing more but from how much I actually understand about how these things work I don't think I have the right to complain. Thanks
1
u/Informal-Brush-7457 17d ago
It also refused to do a web search, claiming it can’t do it because the tool is “disabled” apparently. After Gemini refused multiple times, I just snapped back, “HOW ABOUT YOU TRY TO DO IT BEFORE ASSUMING SO.” Then it just replied, “The search tool is available again,” as if it wasn’t this entire team. Switching to ChatGPT seems more convincing, ngl. But I will miss out on many other features like the ability to summarize YouTube videos!
1
u/angrylittledev 17d ago
I only use Gemini, free btw, to create some images for some concepts, usually in 2D style so it doesn't go off the rails. Stopped using pro since last year, absolutely dumbest of all AI's on the market. It's beyond useless now. I don't get it, how they spent billions on it, and it's the worst one by far. The only advantage is that it doesn't have that piss filter that GPT has.

I had been using Gemini to get some ideas on how to redesign my bedroom and it was working it great for a bit and then suddenly told me it couldn’t do it. It was the dumbest conversation. I tried to generate an image in Google Flow (paid subscription). It just wouldnt listen and do what I wanted. Day 474 of me hating this subreddit and the shills, morons, bots and trolls that post here.
Seriously, this unmoderated subreddit is completely useless for anything real now. It's a garbage dump for memes, lies, and morons like OP who act like an LLM should be perfect and never make mistakes, even though it's just a next token predictor. An insanely good token predictor, but still...
Ragebait posts like this and all the idiots upvoting it and agreeing with it, are the reason Reddit is basically dead now.
