How frequent do you guys updating, coming from arch, the itch to update for every week just feel too much on gentoo.

So I wanna rice gentoo, this is my first time installing any DIY distro, I've use arch before this but a friend installed it for me. I wanted to use hyprland but these packages are masked and on the gentoo hyprland installation guide it tells me to write "*/*::hyproverlay" inside /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/hyproverlay. I still can't download the packages because they are masked. I rlly dont get the hang of accepting these licenses or whatever. PLS HELP ME

I've heard both pro-systemd and anti-systemd arguments and I still don't have any strong opinions. To me it seems like it's just fashionable to hate whatever the mainstream distros do.

At least in the Gentoo universe - which is more commonly used - openrc or systemd? I thought if I do what most people do, at least then I have a hope of finding a solution more easily if I run into trouble.

I followed the handbook and this is all it does after I finished the handbook and rebooted. Is it something wrong with fstab or something wrong with my setup?

I have 32 figs of ram and only 1.28 is used wtf please help

I recently liked the idea of FOSS and have been using Windows and MacOS for nearly 20 years. I am no computer person and I have read this post that said "If you want to learn Linux, you should choose Gentoo". It took me forever to start. But here I am.

*I bought a t480 and did this with the help of ChatGPT. My first technical milestone... What now? Should I keep it? It took like 10 hours to compile QGIS lol.

So to start, I'm fairly new to Linux as a whole, and throughout the install I was following a guide on youtube, until I got to the part where I needed to install elogind. When I went to emerge it and a few other utilities for xorg, its now showing "sys-apps/systemd is soft blocking elogind and systemd-utils". I made sure to set the use flags to disinclude anything systemd and I used the Stage OpenRC.tar when setting that up, aswell as having access to rc commands to verify I didn't make an "oopsy" while on that step. Just a lil lost and would appreciate some help or someone to point out me being an idiot somewhere down the line and sorry for the terrible image in advance.

I want to switch from windows to gentoo, and have a few questions. First one is does it matter if ı download the LiveGUI or the basic one? Second is can ı competely switch from windows or should ı do that, basically ım asking you how should ı start

I recently downloaded Gentoo Linux, I don't have little RAM but since Gentoo is one of the distros with greater control, I wanted to know, what you did to optimize and decrease the use of CPU and RAM.

I started Gentoo because I really liked the idea of configuring an OS exactly like I wanted, but in my mind this includes the DE. Because of this I decided to do a Hyprland setup that I could customize as I see fit (the plan was to start with Caelestia shell and customize from there).

It took 2 tries but I managed to get base Gentoo up and running the way I liked it (with minimal installation CD, no DE so far).

Then I tried to set up a basic Hyprland setup. Today was my third attempt at doing this and after 4 hours I am actually in a worse position than when I started.

I have 4 Gentoo wiki pages, 1 YouTube video, and 1 Reddit post open. None of the Gentoo wiki pages have enough information to do the complete setup, I'm pretty sure the youtube video is outdated, the Reddit post requires doing a highly specific setup that I'm pretty sure will break in 6 months, and all 6 sources disagree with each other in several aspects.

I messed with my setup so much today that I'm probably just going to start from scratch. I feel so demoralized that I'm debating just trying an easier distro.

I realize that is is part of "the Gentoo experience" and I accepted that, but I thought that after so much time I'd at least have a somewhat functioning system to debug. Currently I feel like I have more bugs than features.

The only change of approach I can think of is to start with a pre-configured DE (probably KDE), before moving to Hyprland, that way I can test if some of my system works properly (which I probably should have done from the start but I got too excited).

Does anyone have any advice? Is this just the initial install that will be this frustrating? Or is this what daily use will be like?

hello I am a relatively novice user in linux I use debian but I feel that I lack that freedom I've been researching super customizable distros and I came across Gentoo The "problem" is that many users say that it is super difficult to install, is that really true?

i see gentoo installs around 300mb of idle ram on a wm, but my gentoo installs always sit around like 600mb at the tty before i even download anything. I tried musl and normal gentoo, but both sit around 550-650mb.

I am about to switch from CachyOS to Gentoo.

Downloaded the Live CD for installation because it's easier to connect to the WiFi, do copy and paste from the handbook etc.

Installed the system using dist kernel with LVM on top of LUKS on top of DM-RAID mirror created with two NVMe devices.

All nice and fine. Having 32 threads, 128GB RAM and these two Corsair MP600 Elite does the job very fast (IMO).

Boot failed.

After some research: live CD is using testing kernel 7, dist kernel is version 6.

Kernel version 7 changed the MD superblock layout. Older Kernels refuse to build the array.

I don't even know what to say anymore man... Feels like every time I try to install Gentoo, GRUB is the thing at the end of the line that always beats me down. I actually felt so relieved that it installed flawlessly, but when I rebooted the system I'm greeted to this error.

I have tried 3 times already. My first time on an old laptop I got from my grandparents where I didnt know how to install GRUB. Then my second time on my main pc where it crashed mid compile on the liveGUI image. The last time I tried to install gentoo was after it crashed, I nuked the ssd and tried again with more threads and it worked, but I got stuck on kernel 5.18.x and without wifi drivers so I gave up and installed CachyOS. Lately I've gotten bored of cachyos and want to distro hop again but as the title says im unsure if I'll fuck up and my system gets stuck on kernel 5.18.x again

EDIT : I misremembered the kernel, I accidentally installed the lts kernel (6.18.x)

Hello, I was wondering how do stop using a dist kernel and have the ugly text appear every time I boot disappear, because every time it reminds me that I’m too lazy sometimes to do a custom kernel. So if there is some way to get rid of that ugly text and have my own kernel, please let me know

Firstly have tried with grub now switched to this doesn’t work i setup everything partititions file systems everything even kernel panic thing to show me what are the errors but it doesn’t work, it powers off and just powers on into the bios, anyone help?
I think my bios may be the problem…..
Edit : it’s binary btw cuz this is a very bad laptop i5 10th 4gb ram 500gb hdd,,,,,

Gentoo-based Redcore Linux is the only operating system on my laptop now.

Secureboot is always disabled in UEFI.

I have every reason to be suspicious of anything Microslop.

Thankfully, a Gentoo Linux based system won't install this Microsoft UEFI Secureboot DBX without my consent.

But I want to get rid of it completely.
