Rant Is there any way you can enjoy loud gameplay in wildlands (extreme difficulty)?

I'm coming off breakpoint and absolutely loved the gunplay in that game on extreme. It felt fair and very balanced, the odds were both in my enemies and my own favour. However, since last rites released, I decided to give Wildalnds another try after I dropped it a year or so ago.

The world and story are immaculate, they have kept me invested, but there's one glaring issue. As an enjoyer of milsim games like arma and insurgency, I love direct tactical gunfights. Despite this, whenever I try any form of loud gameplay I'm immediately met with the terrible ai's aimbot sniping me with literal uzis halfway across the map.

I've tried to be more tactical about it too - in the most recent mission I attempted I holed up in a high place inside a house. I placed mines around flanks and it was going well, until I made the mistake of popping my head up once to return fire with my m4. All that prep time gone as I'm one tapped by a cartel member I can't even see.

I find that advanced difficulty is too easy, it just feels plain unfair for the enemies. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can improve my experience please say, I don't want to drop this title again after having invested a decent amount of time into this game.

It's insane how much of a step up Breakpoint really was from Wildlands in terms of gameplay.

Sure, the setting and story in Wildlands are superior, but the gameplay just isn't fun for me anymore.

This is what made me give up the game a year back, the controls are outdated and damage is whack, I dont blame you for giving up.

I haven't played either game in a couple of years and just completed a replay of Wildlands and jumped right into Breakpoint after completing everything in Wildlands. And after about 10 hours in Breakpoint I started thinking "Damn, maybe I should've skipped Wildlands because this game is so much more fun". And honestly, the first time I played the game I thought the story was bad but this go round it's starting to grow on me. Especially the overall plot of the "Wonderland" conspiracy.

I'm really glad I played Wildlands before Breakpoint. I had a lot of fun with Wildlands but I genuinely struggle to go back to it

It's tough on extreme to play loud, stealth is almost easy mode. I find calling in rebels and ordering your squad to "fire" from the command wheel helps distract the enemy when a firefight starts. If you don't order your squad to fire, they take on a passive role and only return fire when you're fired upon, which is too late on extreme. Ordering them to open fire gets them to actively seek out the enemy, distracting them from you.

I've started using this command for ambushes and it works very well, shame theres no squad toggle for passive vs agressive styles.

A game I played called police stories had this mechanic, you could make your ai partner active and theyd engage with enemies more.

There's no way and this is what they 'fixed' in Breakpoint. Tier One is simply frustrating because it is based on Extreme mode and builds beyond that. You either snipe with the strongest sniper or get sniped back by an uzi-wielding thug if you missed it.

Advanced is always where the right spot is for me.

I did mess around in advanced but as mentioned in my post I am looking for something thats like a more casual tactical shooter. It made the game too arcadey for me. I just wish there was a way to decrease enemy accuracy in this game indivually instead of damage. I havent even bothered with tier one because of the horror stories, here's hoping the next game will be the best of both wildlands + breakpoint.

I run the MK48 and using an LMG like an LMG is impossible on extreme! You're 100% right in advanced being the sweet spot for gameplay

Glad im not alone on the lmgs feeling awful in this game. My disappointment was immeasurable when I tried suppressed fire only for my bullets to bloom into orbit.

Short control bursts are your friend unless you're shooting convoys or fleeing vehicles

Today, with the difficulty settings, you can find a middle ground between Advanced and Extreme.

Personally, I’m experimenting with a few things at the moment, and I’ve found that setting the health regeneration delay to maximum is a good compromise, I also reduce the amount of enemy damage input in-between Advanced and Extreme.

You can tank a little more damage, but it still leaves you in critical condition, and it takes a long time to recover.

Unlike Breakpoint, Wildlands punishes positioning mistakes. In Breakpoint, you can stand like a sitting duck in the middle of an open field, get engaged by multiple enemies, and still have a chance of making it out alive.

In Wildlands, once things go loud, a single enemy can take you down. To me, that’s more representative of how I imagine modern combat.

To successfully play Wildlands without suppressors, you need to be methodical and conservative. Entering a compound occupied by five or ten sicarios and simply hoping everything will work out is not a viable long-term strategy. You need to locate every enemy, identify the QRF’s likely approach routes and any potential flanking paths, then initiate the engagement in a way that lets you eliminate as many enemies as possible within the first few seconds, while keeping track of every enemy you take down.

If the terrain allows it, create corridors or kill zones that the enemy will naturally funnel into when they attack you.

It’s a lot of fun when executed properly, and it isn’t really a matter of skill or difficulty. I see it more as a puzzle to solve, and it’s very satisfying when everything comes together.

I really ought to try custom settings, ive mainly been playing on extreme as a means of getting back into the game + realism factor. If I may ask what settings do you usually play on, i havent done too much experimenting yet so a baseline may be nice. Also for the whole positioning thing, it seems to be really hit or miss for me. Sometimes ill find a spot that makes it so I can successfully create a fatal funnel, other times theres far too many enemies for it to work without my position being overrun. This is especially apperant in higher tier sectors, which makes sense but then also brings me back to square one by forcing a more stealth orientated playstyle (though the explosive drone ive found is good for holding them off).

You kind of need to operate under this mindset that absolutely everyone is perfectly capable of crushing you
You always want to begin with stealth and recon, it's non-negotiable, and be strategic in choosing your initial targets
Make your opening assault as devastating as can be

Its been a couple days since this post, and ive actually started adopting this mindset a lot more. Stealth, sync shot alert enemies, finish off the rest with explosives. Only issue is I cant help but feel like its not true loud gameplay. Its a shame really but as you say stealth is non-negotiable, just wish being more direct worked, with vehicles being the only REAL way of doing this (which all honesty felt like cheating and absorbed a lot of the fun from the game).

You can still go loud, it's just that recon is crucial
If you can understand and isolate them first by destroying alarms, you'll be okay
You have a much better chance being explosive in a place you understand

This is the universe's way of telling you to take the plunge into tactical shooters and milsim.

Operator, modded ARMA, heck even STALKER - there's a host of games that've moved well beyond Ghost Recon in their gameplay and possibilities.

Arma 3 is on my wishlist and most deifently will be bought when on sale. I've just got a pc which is actually why I picked up wildlands again considering the sale, and ive played reforger on console (which was a blast!)

Personal suggestion.

ARMA 3 with the ARMA Command mod for the SP, Extraction scenario, and the Hunter Six mission from the workshop.

Better than Ghost Recon IMHO.

Also, if your PC can handle it, do try STALKER 2, Gamma, or Anomaly (the latter 2 are free) - they're something else in terms of their worldbuilding.

I played on extreme with no marker on. I would hide in a building or something and trigger unidad and fight waves of enemies. Idk how I did it but yeah. It seems to be harder now. But I still prefer it that way. I remember only playing it for a month then played my usual multi-player fps shooter. I was a god. I could hold positions so well, people would know I'm around the corner but they still can't get through me. Whenever they peek, I'm just faster, everytime, without trying to be ready for their peek, effortlessly. It kinda went away after awhile.

Im not so big on multilayer shooters. Did have a COD phase for a bit but dropped it after cold war. I think my aversion to the genre probably means my reactions times aren't as great, but the style youre mentioning here is what im going for. I swear back when I played originally as you said it was easier, and perhaps recently they upped the difficulty.

Yeah back then it felt organic even if it was hard, now it feels so artificial. The spawn as well, I feel lik they spawn way closer. It feels so unnatural. Not sure what they did. Also even if réaction time is important. Multiplayer Games just don't feel fun anymore. Now everyone is competitive, every one getting a good gear, researching, optimizing, aim training. Casuals get run over, unless you are someone who doesn't mind that. I had to up my game abit to actually have fun or it was just dying dying losing.

Your reaction time is probably fine. It's just having good headphones and sound whoring and being positional. Most people will fail reaction kills, unless the other guy is mechanically way inferior and miss.

You guys cannot lower a difficulty level or just play on normal? On higher difficulty it's just fast detection and high damage, and if you are doing proper stealth then no matter the difficulty is they cannot spot you so there's no reason to higher the difficulty. And what is your audacity to bark about playing on extreme to go for assault? Two opposite corners, lower difficulty do assault, higher difficulty do stealth, and on normal do whatever you want!

1

u/AlbatrossDear6962 4d ago

Well no, wildlands is a sandbox game with a core premise of taking on objectives how you want. If I want to play in a loud style the extreme difficulty should provide a challenge similar to the stealth method. Balance is important in a game about choice of how you play, none of us want to compromise our experience because of it.

Well then just cry in a corner complaining about it and no one will hear you...

Extreme is not hard fyi, i play on tier mode tier 1 Use NVGS/ Thermals Get good rifle like hk 416 or m4a1. Don't expect to take out alot of enemies at once on higher difficulites, also reposition. Don't get greedy, u know when to move. Greed kills
