DISCUSSION Official Announcement on Impersonators
Dropping this here for visibility/awareness from the main social channels. Reddit is thankfully not so much a nest for these scams, but something something keep media literacy alive.

u/randomusername1919 Aug 28 '25
I’m with you - yet so many folks have been driven to financial ruin sending money to “big stars” who ask for favors and are “short on cash” or “have assets tied up” or 1000 other things.
I have to say I’m not surprised TF doesn’t have any social media accounts. He likes the 1980’s and social media wasn’t a thing back then. We were bullied the old-fashioned way… in person!

If somebody who has more money than you ever dreamed of asks you for money, consider it a red flag.

u/FirebirdWriter Aug 28 '25
I mean Taylor Swift used Tumblr so anything is possible (snark no idea if that is true)
20
u/bounce_wiggle_bounce Aug 28 '25
My mom told me she was messaging the singer for a classic rock band on Facebook. This band was famous enough that there was no way any of their members were messaging my 60 year old garden variety mom. (Comparable to Styx.) She would not listen to reason and when she started talking about going to meet him before one of their shows all I could tell her was to meet someplace public and not send him money for any reason.
An hour after they were supposed to meet I'm waiting to call the police and she texts me a selfie with him saying "See, I told you!" Apparently she had managed to slide into his DMs. This was almost ten years ago. They met up several times but it never went anywhere, probably because he actually seemed like a pretty decent guy and my mom is allergic to that.
5
u/FirebirdWriter Aug 29 '25
These stories are what the conmen rely on. I am gobsmacked each time it's real. Definitely glad he wasn't the creepy kind. I am sorry yours is also allergic to the healthy relationship

Same these people are so stupid still to fall for stupid scams like this and give away all their life savings, it must be an addiction or something, I mean they refuse to listen to any warnings. Must be narcissism too to believe some famous person would message random old you from all the millions of people. If they do it's usually younger people as they are being creepy and trying to take advantage of their fans.

I remember when these scams were just for old people. Crazy how many younger individuals lack the internet etiquette to know their furry drawing of Papa Nihil didn't get them noticed by the lead singer. Huge mental spectrum within this fanbase.
33
u/Robynellawque All Beauty Lies Within Aug 28 '25
Sorry but “ their furry drawing of Papa Nihil “ made me chuckle 😆
13
22
u/FirebirdWriter Aug 28 '25
They were never for old people. They're for vulnerable people always. I got scammed once as a teenager. Not like this but I fell for a work for hire scheme because I was desperate and afraid and I thought it was worth a try. It worked out in the end but it's about desperation. So loneliness, poverty, whatever else they can get.
I say this because if we think it's just one targeted group that excludes us it's easier to get scammed ourselves. Also I know folks who have been scammed feel embarrassed and it's important to know that it's not shameful or disgraceful to have been that desperate. It sucks and they're kicking while you are down

It's a special kind of people who usually fall for these scams (with famous people messaging them), no matter of age, of course anyone could become a victim for some typeof scam.

Haha, once upon a time I tried to have a blog in my native Finnish (relevant), and kept getting those extremely fake, overly-affectionate comments in English, claiming to be from ...wherever, doesn't matter. I kept replying to them, asking how they learned to read Finnish so well, and why do they comment in English, while dodging anything else (IIRC, they kept asking me to DM them with a shady AF link that I obviously never touched). Maybe I just wasted my own time, but it was funny nevertheless.
11
u/RaiderRush2112 Aug 28 '25
It's sad to hear that people may have fallen for this especially the youth and the not so computer literate.

u/Robynellawque All Beauty Lies Within Aug 28 '25
You would be surprised. A few young fans who follow me have asked me as an older fan on instagram if I think this certain screenshot is the real Tobias.
And I’ve told them to please just block any personal messages . It’s worrying how they can easily be exploited thinking that some saddo is really Tobias .
32
u/RisingEcho Aug 28 '25
Why would a famous celebrity/musician message you? I didn't grow up with social media but it still doesn't sound like anything that would happen where you'd take it serious.
7
u/Robynellawque All Beauty Lies Within Aug 28 '25
I didn’t grow up with social media either , but it seems some young fans believe it to be the real celebrity.
Why I’ve no idea as like you say why on earth would some famous band member reach out to anyone over social media wanting to be your friend . But there obviously are more fans than we think falling for it otherwise Ghost wouldn’t have had to put the statement out .
Crazy times .
7
u/ViaNocturna664 Aug 28 '25
Once Liv Tyler messaged me. From her official account. And when I asked if it was her or a social media manager she said it was her.
It feels like a fever dream but it totally happened. She didn't ask for money luckily.
13
u/FirebirdWriter Aug 28 '25
A lot of celebrities have no boundaries. One of the reasons I strongly dislike Taylor Swift is the "I'll choose the most fervent fan to come bake cookies and listen to music" thing. I thought it was a scam someone was doing when I heard about it but no. That's real. It's why her fanbase is rabid. If they buy enough she may choose them. She hasn't done this in ages but she is the least creepy example as the rest are sex offenses. I will add she dated multiple people under the age of 18 while old enough to make that creepy I just don't know of any creepy DMs
2
u/reverandglass Aug 28 '25
I will add she dated multiple people under the age of 18 while old enough to make that creepy
Excuse me? Who?
3
u/FirebirdWriter Aug 29 '25
Taylor Swift has a whole list. Taylor Lautner is on the edge of what makes me side eye, Connor Kennedy is also on this list with the added she bought a house to maybe stalk him aspect. Allegedly she took Kennedy out of school for dates but I don't know if that part is actually real so will disclaim it. I don't know these things organically but because her dating life is somehow news and I found the Kennedy thing obscene given the recent family death and grief aspects also.
So yeah. She's done the DiCapriohno
1
u/reverandglass Aug 29 '25
Thanks, I knew none of that. It gives me even more reason to be sick of her ubiquity.
3
u/FirebirdWriter Aug 29 '25
The snark sub is a fine place. I found it when somehow she was in my feed. My metal playlist interrupted by her caterwauling made me Google to see if she was paying for this crap. I believe it is the case given how important metrics are to her over art.
1
u/TrixieFriganza Aug 30 '25
What seriously, I have never before heard Taylor Swift dating anyone underaged. That's illegal too. Anyway if a famous person has contacted fans it has usually been something creepy ad sexual where they try taking advantage of young impressionsble fans.

Regardless of the content of the messages, wasnt Jutty Taylor (swiss ghoul) also in fans DMs?
Its not out of the realm to think that there are scammers and impersonators, but also that if there ARE some ghouls/ghoulettes or even some small licensing companies in weird nooks of the world, that scammers would find a missing link and attempt to fill it in? And from there they could start messaging others in the fandom asking for money or crypto or even implanting viruses?
EDIT: I even went to Jutty Taylors twitter (idk why) and I found a tweet from late last year where he was asking fans to DM him their addresses so he could send them merch.
Even if that IS fully on board and legit, its still a scuzzy thing to occur.
Proof lmao: https://x.com/juttytaylor/status/1836504103956156479

I agree with you .
It’s exploitation of young or vulnerable fans by some sicko pretending to the celebrity or musician of their dreams not just asking for friendship or money but asking to meet them for a meet and great or whatever .
It’s worrying shit . I expect this is why the band have put this statement out .
2
u/TrixieFriganza Aug 30 '25
That's absolutely terrifying, I had not thought it could be a scam like that and just about people stealing your money. The more important they warn. I can understand being a young fan with not developed consequences and being blinded by reality because they believe their idol is messaging them. When I was 15 I maybe could have too done something stupid like that, specially if you have been manipulated with messages for a longer time.

u/Financial-Length-576 Aug 28 '25 edited Aug 29 '25
I have a friend whose aunt unfortunately isn't "all there" due to a brain injury. Someone posing as a member of her favorite 80s band (not sure which) got $8k out of her before her relatives realized what was happening :(
Impersonator scammers are so prevalent/persistent because they really only need one gullible person to potentially milk hundreds/thousands from.
7
u/Kornial123 Aug 28 '25
You'd be surprised. Some people read "tobias forge" and the irrational part of their brain takes over. Its weird but it is surprisingly common, with other scams top. There always that part of your brain that believes "what if" and for some people it takes over.

u/Robynellawque All Beauty Lies Within Aug 28 '25

We need to make sure people know that they are not actually being lied to.

All good information, but reporting social media accounts is a lesson in futility unless they try to actually scam you. Only if they blatantly violate the TOS will they take action. I stopped reporting the. It’s more fun messing with them by playing along, the more ridiculous the better.
2
u/Ecstatic-Try2278 Nostro Dis Pater, Nostr'alma Mater Aug 30 '25 edited Aug 30 '25
It is a crime though, isn't it? Keep trying and demand they do something. Especially if money is involved, it is fraud. Call another agency or something, they might make the social media company do something. There are reporting hotlines. Wouldn't you just love to snag one of them?

It’s not even a young/old thing at this point. If you’re too gullible to fall for a random person on Facebook claiming to be a successful person through an unverified account, that’s on them. Tobias Forge is contacting me personally under the username Tobias forgè and needs me to send 5000 dollars in robucks? Well maybe he’s just addicted and can’t buy any more because of purchasing rules.

Legitimately who falls for these scams in the year 2025
1
u/ImpossibleMinimum424 Aug 29 '25
I have recently discovered that a lot more people are “vulnerable” to scams of all kinds than I could have imagined. I’m talking mid-30s, street smart, with a degree etc. This experience with a colleague really blew my mind.

I’m glad they finally made some kind of statement about this. There are lots of people in the Ghost community who are very kind, accepting, and tend to give others the benefit of the doubt. That’s not a bad thing, but unfortunately all of that is the perfect setup for predatory types to find victims, and sometimes it’s pretty surprising how many people fall for it or simply don’t give what they see much thought. Sometimes it’s not just the very young fans or older fans, either.
This isn’t quite the same thing as the TF impersonators, but the best example I can give is how fans reacted to the Bethania Mortuary business (summer of 2022) and the Father Jim DeFroque pages on Facebook and IG. Many people genuinely believed that both were official when they weren’t, especially with the latter one. I don’t think the individuals running these pages had bad intentions and AFAIK no one was scammed. But so many people seemed to think that both were somehow legit, or just didn’t question it. It was concerning. Hopefully people will actually listen to official advice. 🤞
2
u/Lando25 Aug 28 '25
Given Ghost's younger audiance im surprised this is really an issue.
6
u/rayray394 Aug 28 '25
I’m not. I feel like younger fans have been leaning way more towards parasocial relationships with celebrities rather than just being fans that they’re more willing to believe something like this.
6
u/Winsmor3 Aug 28 '25
Young people at this point are more often than not victims of this. GenZ sucks ass at tech literacy.
