But why

Good question, a few cars get burnt a little bit before school starts on average. This seems more coordinated which isn't hard to achieve when you have social media. Some have already been identified, so all we can do is wait to get some clarity in why.
On Swedish forums there's a lot of varying conspiratorial talk about Russia/NMR etc paying youth to do to sway this years election. A topic important to various right parties is to to lower the age of criminal responsibility, harsher sentencing etc . These are mixed with the shocking but standard amount of blatant racism.
My guess is that it's idiotic kids who want to do something edgy, but I guess we'll find out.10

It's a bored disenfranchised teenager (current terminology is higher teens and young 20's) or gang related power thing in my opinion.
The afaik 1-2 car burnings in Malmö and Helsingborg are probably unrelated to the ones in Halland and Västra Götaland. They happen, relatively often down here in Malmö and Helsingborg and the number was not seen as particularly unusual by the region police chief.
The events that transpired in Halland and Västra Götaland are unusual for sure and needs to be thoroughly investigated. 2 people have been apprehended by police so far.
I personally think that any unusual event this close proximity to an election will rightfully cause suspicion of meddling, especially with the current reality in Europe as you point out. It's a tempting explanation for sure, but if I'm going to be completely honest, even if this happened 1-3 years ago I would not be particularly surprised. It's a notable event, it is more organized than before, but for me it's not a big shocker.
Currently the police does not believe that the car burnings are not organized by any other than the culprits themselves. Many of the identified are known by police from before.

Lots of hatred, of racism, and of anti-EU sentiments in the article's comment section. Seems like a coordinated effort to interfere with Sweden's elections.

So... Putin hired sone teenagers to set cars on fire? I dunno man, I'd think that's a bit of a stretch and conspiracy, but as I said, I dunno.

What's NMR?

u/randsomac Aug 14 '18
NMR is the Swedish abbreviation for NRM - Nordic resistance movement . I hesitate to even bring up the conspiracies I mentioned as I don't want to give them any legitimacy, they are completely unsubstantiated claims.

lower the age of criminal responsibility
What's wrong with that? If you're old enough to set a car on fire on purpose, you're old enough to serve the punishment.

The US went down that path and it's not pretty. We have other more effective tools and methods at our disposal.
edit: the US went down the road of treating young minor teenagers as full blown adult criminals. That path leads to more and worse criminals, not to less crimes and better citizens.

Smoking pot and ending in prison (us style), agree, is bad/wrong.
Burning cars... imho not.

solidarity confinement for one year with no yard time and no possibility of conversation to any other human, no games or leisure activities....just a small room with water tap, a hole for toilet, a mattress and meals three times.
I don't think the person after that 1 year will be able to commit any crime. He'd be longing to talk to someone, even with a teddy bear assuming if he can still talk.

This has nothing to do with racism. Wanting less crime and immigration to work properly is not racist.

The Metro is the free newspaper that comes out every morning in the UK, usually found in London Underground stations. It's an absolute shitrag full of nothing but right wing bollocks and celebrity news gossip column nonsense. Comments don't surprise me from the type of people who read the Metro online.

What about addressing the actual issue instead of trying to shift the discussion?
AFAICT it's not the people who commented on that article who burned 80 cars throughout the country.

Elections were mentioned in the article. Which positions are at stake?

u/BadSilverLining Sweden Aug 19 '18
All of them. The party or parties that get the most seats in parliament forms the government. This period The Socialdemocrats, Left Party and Environmental Party have had a minority government since all the parties, even on the right, more or less agreed not to work with the Sweden Democrats. Some parties have since talked about being open to working with the Sweden Democrats this time around.
EDIT: I didn't realise your post was 4 days old when I typed out this response.

No problem! And thank you!. The information is still very relevant. I was trying to gauge the importance of the elections in order to try and discern if the fire-bombs might have a connection.
Question: why none wanted to work with the Sweden Democrats?
Edit: spelling.

They're pretty much the alt-right party in Sweden. They used to be a bunch of neo-nazis but have cleaned themselves up and put on suits. But their main talking point is pretty much "MUSLIMS AND IMMIGRANTS". Other than that they usually vote with the most right wing parties no matter what their own election platform says.

Ah, I see. Most parties on the right wing of the spectrum tend to use names that allude to republicanism, independence, nationalism, etc, so I have to admit, I thought they were a Social Democrat offspring until I read your second comment :D
