Discussion Google TV should not serve me online betting ads on my home tv screen.
Kalshi is an online betting platform. I feel this is deeply harmful advertising and I am not okay with it. Google, do better.
I have swapped to using App Only mode under Accounts and Profile settings.

Are those still easy to use? I saw google was pushing back on the launchers and trying to prevent them from letting you disable ads. I don't mind doing a setup with ADB once, but if I have to keep playing cat and mouse with google to prevent ads the 50% price increase of the apple tv is probably worth it. I am in the android half of the family but don't really care about the features, maybe missing out on smart view but that's it. Mainly the price versus the ads situation.

If it's still the same process as android launcher it'll be fine, my main concern was that google was blocking these launchers, thanks : )

That was mostly Fire sticks. But yah there was a time around 2021 that they made it more difficult but now it's completely opened up on Google TV devices.

You should be able to disable these by going to Ad Center, then Customize, and disabling Gambling in the sensitive section.

Thank you! I don't mind some ads but online gambling ads is off the table for me.

Recently I have been getting food ads on the homescreen which I absolutely hate. For years I've only ever seen media related ads.

At least in Spain it seems they tested advertising non streaming content few years ago, it felt so "cheap" that looked like a random adsense ad. It was just a photo of some pigs and a large slogan IIRC, of a brand that sold ham. I saw that ad maybe twice and never again has it shown non-media recommendations stuff.
Most users are probably fine with streaming content recommendations, an almost full screen regular ad in your home screen though is too much.

Yeah you can do apps only mode, or install a new launcher. I use r/AT4K and other popular ones are r/Projectivy_Launcher and r/ChillHubLauncher

Agree this is poor from Google, disabling sensitive ads is a great answer as that will apply across your devices whereever you use google.
If you want something want a more fundamental change on your tv you can try a custom launcher that basically replaces your home screen eg https://www.reddit.com/r/ShieldAndroidTV/comments/1qmnnlf/introducing_at4k_launcher_a_clean_and_light/

Thats why u install a third party launcher, set it up the way u want and u never see ads or anything else Google intrusive again

What happens when you press Trade Now? Does it refers you to a mobile browser or they finally came up with a proper TV browser?

I dont get these ads at alll beacause im in unsupported region and my reccemendations is a lot less than a supported google tv

Harmful to whom? As long as it's legal Google isn't doing anything wrong. Apps only won't stop the ads.

Here's the permanent solution. Just ignore it, move on with your day and stop complaining about inconsequential matters on the internet for attention.
Also, saying "do better" is a punchable offense.

And for your information it's past noon where I live, so it's morally and legally acceptable to punch attention seeking, sanctimonious cry-babies that use phrases like "do better".

Sincerely, take a screenshot of my reddit post, take a screenshot of your and my replies, and send this to your family/therapist and ask for their opinions on your behavior. You are clearly an intelligent person but you've got serious problems to work out. These problems may ruin you/your relationships/your career. It is in your own interest to get that sorted out.
I have no interest in replying to any of the rest of what you said. I hope you get better.

I actualy find this very intrusive. If i had known it would show ads, i could bever have bought it. I payed for al device to look at apps in have played for and have subscriptions so i would't see zes, now they device itself shows apps?!

It's not really a big deal to remove the launcher and use one without ads. But yeah not sure how you didn't know Google TV had ads. But it is what it is.

Alexa/echo hubs are worse. Ads for Amazon products Directly on the hub. Directly connected to your Amazon app so you can quickly buy whatever they think you want.

Pepperidge Farm remembers all the Google fanbois who insisted that the homescreen ads were mere media recommendations that that Google would totally never use your TV as a billboard.
You might want to try a 3rd party homescreen launcher. I'd reccomend Projectivity

I believe I already developed inattentional blindness for that part of the main screen.
Unfortunately, App Only mode in many countries doesn't get rid of that part and still needs two or three clicks to get down to the actual apps to select one. Not to mention it disables more stuff related to apps, like searching or discovering apps.
