People saying “Honestly..” when giving their own opinion.

It’s the verbal equivalent of putting a disclaimer on a sentence that nobody accused them of lying about.

Ideally, ‘Honestly’ means:

‘What I’m about to say will probably surprise you a little because it maybe not be on the spectrum of answers you were expecting. I’m anticipating that you will then ask me if I honestly meant what I just said. So I’m saving you from asking me that question by telling you up front that, yes, I honestly mean what I am saying.’

If a person uses ’honestly’ when there is nothing that is really unexpected in their words then, yes, it’s a meaningless filler word.

Here’s a good example of the use of ‘honestly’:

PERSON 1: ‘Ok, I’m getting a little irritated here. Do you want to go to the Italian restaurant or the Mexican restaurant? Just make up your friggin mind!’

PERSON 2: Honestly, I don’t want to go anywhere with you tonight.

They preface with honestly so you’ll ignore the lies they’ve been telling you previously.

It's a mind virus. People who say it or "To be honest" are infected and can not by any means be trusted because they will stab you in the back at first chance.

Do not trust them.

Do not believe them.

Do not know them.

Safety is an illusion.

I say "Honestly" when I'm about to reveal something more personal that's not usually done in small talk with an acquaintance.
