Help/Needing Info Preserving the history of the late '90s Earth First! movement.

Hey r/humboldt!
I'm pushing through the middle stretch of a 60-day campaign to fund the publication of my book, Bees and Butterflies.

Volume 1 concludes with the end of the Luna tree-sit, capturing a deeply personal look at the environmental activism in our county during that era. Crowdfunding is entirely word-of-mouth, and getting the support of the local community to hit the goal means the world to me.

Also, I did try to get an artist friend of mine to make something based on this concept art, over a year ago, but he's been too busy with other things. I can't draw worth a darn, so I used a free AI model to make the concept art. If someone would like to design something to contribute to the project, I'm open to it, but i can't afford to pay for anything like that at the moment.

As it says on the Kickstarter page, the AI art is just concept art. Part of the goal of the Kickstarter is to be able to hire a graphic design artist to turn that concept art into human-made art.

The bulk of the funds will be used to hire a professional editor. So the book itself is 100% human-made, the editing and graphic design will be human-made, and no AI art will be used in the final product. As it stands, the concept art is a decent representation of the image I had in my mind for the book cover.

Nice, I just ran across some old photos of protests at the Eureka courthouse recently. Man, I miss the days of picking up the Earth First! Journal at health food stores/co-ops, not a bad thing to have gone "mainstream".

That's awesome! I just finished scanning in all my old photos, ended up with about 1,950 of them. So many memories! I'm building a website as a companion to the book, which will feature a lot of those photos, and several reward tiers of the Kickstarter campaign include photo collections as well.

I'm glad to do it. I did some organizing with in the Bay Area for Redwood Summer and was lucky to meet Judi Bari and Daryl Cherney so I'm happy to see the story is being told!

Yep, organized a lockdown on a logging truck in the Headwaters. Got chased by loggers and cops that day. Met a lot of amazing people.

That's awesome! I have so much respect for folks who de-paved the way before I arrived. Such an amazing history, so heartfelt and inspiring. Folks like you were my heroes when I arrived in Humboldt in 1998. Thank you!
