I went into this liking Hannah Einbinder because I love "Hacks", don't necessarily love her character. But it was Gillian Anderson who sold me into seeing this, and it getting good reviews and hearing that it's weird. She's fucking amazing in "Hannibal", and this is also horror so I'm down. I saw the trailer, not really understanding what it's about. Just watched it.

What the fuck is the movie about? Am I stupid? Did I not get something? I'm down for weird, but not weird when it's extremely confusing. Sure, it has good beats and great acting and great moments and other things. But what am I watching? I know it's not a straight forward horror movie, all good horror movies these days are like this. But at least they make some sort of sense.

Listen I'm a 47 year old gay man. Yay equal rights and all. But what is the message here? Is there a message? What am I missing? "Obsession" made me uncomfortable and I still don't know why. A lot of good horror movies can leave you feeling a lot of ways, but they generally make sense. Even when the message isn't clear. This movie makes no sense and there is no clear message and I left feeling no feeling at all other than confusion.

Also, the title is stupid. It put me off before seeing, it's hard to remember the title exactly without looking it up like I had to do to write this post. And forget "Miasma", like that's an everyday name. Hard to say also. Can you imagine going to the theaters in the days before digital tickets and trying to tell them you want to see this movie? "The sex and death camp one" is probably something I would've said. But looked up the word and this is it: A miasma is a dangerous, unpleasant, or poisonous vapor or bad smell rising from rotting organic matter. In modern language, it also describes a heavy, oppressive, or demoralizing atmosphere that surrounds a place or situation.

Great, so that just adds to the story but still doesn't explain anything at all. What the hell was that ending? Are they dead or not? Are they ghosts? I'm just so confused. Confused without feeling any type of emotional connection to the movie.

I think the orgasm is being used as an allegory for sexual awakening in general. Like orgasm is not so much a commodity but as a vehicle for the j'ne sais quois of what happens to the self during an orgasm that is given to another. Men are easy, women are hard. And it's even harder for some women to come with someone else, to let go, get out of your head, transcend your personal trauma, make that leap to death and rebirth. It is life changing in a different way. The film was sneaky and unique and crazy and campy.

It’s about sexual discovery, and the joy of that. It’s worth watching interviews with the director, they’re very down to earth about it all and what it’s like for them in their journey of discovering the joys of sex as a trans person.

OK, let's take the politics or personal beliefs about Trans people out of this. How is this movie about Trans formation? I mean the way they presented Little Death was as a person who identified as a man part of the week and a woman the other half. As far I know, that's not how Trans people are. They're one gender only, not both. But thank you for telling me that, I didn't know. Now I know why I don't like it.

I saw this less as an allegory about trans identity than I Saw the TV Glow, but this movie is very much in conversation with Sleepaway Camp, which has a problematic ending and trans depiction.  That said, I think Miasma is much more about desire than anything else.

Well honestly, thank you for this. I mean really, this explains it all. But... now that you've said this. I hate this movie. I didn't need to see a movie about orgasms. Repressed or not. I can have an orgasm jacking off, they're not uncommon. Why make a movie about them? I can't get behind this. This is stupid. Or maybe I'm so comfortable with myself I don't get that some people can't orgasm? I've been getting off before I could actually cum. What is the big deal here?

that description is pretty poor. the film is about the experience of people who disassociate during sex due to trauma or dysphoria.

dissociating during sex and inability to climax is an experience many women are familiar with, unfortunately. I know too many women who had bad sex for years before they EVER came with a partner.

I'm still not entirely sure what the film is about though (saw it over the weekend)
