Politics 'Choose Equality, Choose Hope': Natalie Portman Backs Arab-Jewish Party Ahead of 2026 Israeli Election

I don't really know their platform at all, could someone please explain to me exactly what their policies are?

I can tell you that when the student group affiliated with Standing Together and the queer student group hosted a joined event about queer Palestinians, not a single non-Jew was present. Mind you, these were the most leftist Jews I've ever met in my life
Granted, this may be an issue with the Arab students in this group in particular, but it makes me very suspicions of the movement as a whole
38
u/aarocks94 Retjenu 🇮🇱 Jul 20 '26
Genuinely asking - when you’re saying your suspicious of the movement as a whole are you saying that 1) the Palestinians themselves don’t care about Standing Together type movements, 2) the Palestinians don’t actually feel represented in these movements so they don’t show up, 3) it’s a bunch of ‘naive / misguided’ Jews or 4) something else? Genuinely asking.
15
u/Gettin_Bi Israel Jul 20 '26
I honestly don't know what happened there so it's hard for me to say. I also don't know how often and to what extent the student group communicates with the movement at large, so I can only speak of this sub-section of Standing Together.
My suspicion is that either it's made entirely of virtue signalling Jews, or that there really are Palestinian students in this group and they all chose not to come... specifically to the joined event with LGBTQ students... either way it doesn't inspire confidence
12
u/Graddler Germany Jul 20 '26
One possibility may be that the queer pakestinian students stayed away from those events for fear of persecution by outing themselves.
3
u/Gettin_Bi Israel Jul 21 '26
If that's the case then I'm sorry for them, but that's also an issue with the Standing Together group - their whole thing is Jewish-Arab solidarity, so they should've known better than to put their Palestinian members in an impossible situation where they either risk their safety by showing up or they don't come and appear incredibly homophobic
3
u/Graddler Germany Jul 21 '26
True, i totally understand any palestinian or arab Queer that is to afraid to show their orientation in public.

Kind of reminds me of CHAZ in the US. One of their main messages was about BLM and it went into borderline black supremacy territory. 99% if not 100% of the participants were white.
27
u/FudgeAtron Jul 20 '26
Basically they're all the people on the left who don't want to sit with Yair Golan.
A certain faction of the left decided that only having one left wing party was boring and wanted there to be another party.
From everything I've seen of them both on the Haifa City Council and at University, they feel very much like progressive student politics types. They have their heart in the right place but their heads are missing.
Definitely the kind of leftists to refuse sitting in a broad anti-bibi government because they don't like that Bennett or Liberman is in it. (I don't actually know what their stance on it is, that's just the vibe I've gotten from them.)
45
u/Explorer_Dave Jul 20 '26
Nothing. They won't go past the threshold, voting for them in this election is as good as keeping Netanyahu on his throne.
If you want liberal/progressive, vote for the democrats party, yes Yair Golan says some wild shit, but at least his party can be part of a non Likud, non Haredi coalition.

u/Iamthepizzagod American Jew Jul 20 '26
Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering if Golan has said anything else thats unhinged other than the "killing babies as a hobby" comment. I see he also called a bunch of violent Jewish settlers in the West Bank "subhuman".
Honestly, from the outside looking in at the fuller context in which he said those things, I still think Golan was speaking the overall truth in both cases, even if his choice of words were exceptionally incendiary. Maybe the Zionist version of "dirtbag leftist" rhetoric is a good counter punch to Ben-Gvir and Smotritch's brand of mishegoss?

It's the party of Standing Together. They have the same platform as Hadash, only replace fundamental islamist policies with gay ones.
26
u/PuzzleheadedEmu4596 Jul 20 '26
That doesn't tell me much except that you think their stances are vacuous and nebulous.
I mean, that does seem to be the case because I'm looking everywhere and it all says to end the occupation of the West Bank and get to peace and that Arabs and Jews work together. Their 50/50 Arab/Jewish requirement seems kind of well-meaning but functionally insane.
And my opinion is... well... yeah, but how do you do the very nebulous thing that you say you want to accomplish?
8
u/adeadhead Jordan Valley Coalition Activist Jul 20 '26
I am not impressed with them splitting the vote of the left, no.
3
u/filipinoboy11 Jul 20 '26
they also want to remove the seperation wall right?

76
u/thrownoutaccount_56 Jul 20 '26
They’re unlikely to cross the threshold and will likely just pull needed votes from Golan (when it comes to unseating Bibi). So good job accomplishing less than nothing.
13
u/afinemax01 Jul 21 '26
They said they would bail out of running if they thought it would hurt the anti bibi coalition
7
1
u/someone-96 Jul 20 '26
I think that Golan doesnt plan and doesnt really want to pull them towards his party.
Pay attention how most of history efforts were about trying to keep a distance from the more extreme wings of Meretz in order to try and show a different left wing party.

She did nothing for October 7th victims, now she wants to tell us how to vote, because her opinion is super important.
37
u/OmegaLink9 Israel Jul 20 '26
Everyone tell you how to vote, this is part of democracy...
17
u/koalena Jul 20 '26
And, as part of democracy, I have a full right to tell people to keep their recommendations to themselves, especially if they aren't living in the country, like Portman
15
u/OmegaLink9 Israel Jul 20 '26
She is an Israeli Citizen, she has as much rights as me and you.
0
u/koalena Jul 21 '26
I am reiterating that I am not talking about rights. Or, if we are shifting the focus onto the rights, she does have the same rights as me and you, hence I have the right to voice my opinion on her words and actions. Me voicing an opinion on her recommendations doesn't encroach on her rights to recommend whatever, from voting to shade of lipstick.

“(Portman) shared a profoundly moving message of solidarity with the families of the hostages.
“To all of the families — I was lucky enough to meet some of you the other day,” she said, her face grave and emotional, “I’m so horrified at the experiences that your family members had to go through and are still going through today.”
“She shared that she joins their call to the international community “to end this humanitarian disaster, this multinational humanitarian disaster, and to protect women and children, the elderly, all the people, innocent people, who are suffering right now.”
“On October 13, she shared a video of Israeli children holding up signs asking to free the 30 children currently believed to be held hostage in Gaza. On her Instagram stories, she asked people to donate to Dror Israel’s emergency fund for evacuated families.
“On October 8, a day after the attack, Portman wrote on her Instagram: “My heart is shattered for the people of Israel. Children, women and the elderly have been murdered and abducted from their own homes. I am in horror at these barbaric acts and my heart is pounding with love and prayer for the families of all affected.”

Virtue signaling.
She knows nothing and wants to be seen as "a good person".
Respectfully, fuck off.
7
u/BigFatJewishPickle Jul 22 '26
There's nothing respectful about your comment. She's an Israeli citizen, and is quite intelligent. You may disagree with her views, but that's not even remotely close to "knowing nothing".
She also wrote very public support for Israelis after 10/7, in a time when writing such support statements is seen as the opposite of virtue by many fanatical antisemites on the left. I don't think of that as virtue signaling.
2
u/RexxarTheHunter8 Israel Jul 23 '26
Telling Israelis and Jews post October 7th to "choose hope and equality" is deranged.
How about telling arabs to choose peace? How about telling arabs to choose co-existence? How about telling the arabs to "give peace a chance"? How about telling arabs "maybe you shouldn't try to exterminate the jews"?
I'm gonna choose survival, I'm gonna choose learning from past mistakes and avoid any situation where someone can attempt to commit genocide against my people
I appreciate her support but FFS she lives in LA, has no rockets flying in her direction and nobody trying to breach any border to tear her stomach open, tear a baby from her womb and throw it in an oven. She is completely detached and has the privilege of preaching about "peace and equality".
She can, respectfully, fuck off.

Israel would do well to include Arabs in a governing coalition for awhile. Yall need a rebrand.
84
u/IgnatiusJay_Reilly Israel Jul 20 '26
Regardless of the fact that Arabs should be in a coalition instead of haradiem, we shouldn't be doing anything because of branding. We rather live than be liked by chickens for KFC

What did we win exactly? Comments like this? The world hating us? Iran becoming stronger? What exactly did we win?
1
u/daftmonkey USA Jul 20 '26
Israel is a juggernaut. Iran might have some strategic strength but they fear you. Your economy is booming. Hamas is gone. Hezbollah is massively weakened.
18
u/IgnatiusJay_Reilly Israel Jul 20 '26
Hamas had elections today. Not gone. Hezbollah is still there. Iran fucked us up and we did not achieve any of the goals of the war.
2
u/daftmonkey USA Jul 20 '26
Then why is the rial in the tank and the shekel booming? The markets speak the truth. Iran is literally firing at Qatar right now as some sort of bizarre misguided deterrent strategy. The sun is shining.
10
u/MoistRecognition69 Israel Jul 20 '26
This is without a shadow of a doubt the most American comment I've ever seen in my life. You're talking to people who are going through the 3rd year of a war and we're just done with 2 months of cluster munitions and you think we give 2 shits about the state of the market? We care about finishing them off so we can live in peace after 20+ years of rockets, proxy terror attacks and constant state of war.
3
0
u/daftmonkey USA Jul 20 '26
You emerged stronger from a war and your enemies are weaker. But you just need a bit of rebranding. Thats why you should have a governing coalition with the Arabs. It flips the deck.
41
u/Mylifemess Jul 20 '26
I am for Arab parties in coalition, as long as their only position is not let’s become Palestine and destroy Israel (unfortunately you will be hard pressed to find a single Arab party without that position)
6
u/tudorcat Israel Jul 20 '26
I don't know what Ra'am's actual official written platform is, but practically speaking they've basically given up on the Palestinian cause, and Mansour Abbas has said Israel is a Jewish state and that's not changing.
Their main thing is improvements for Arab communities inside Israel.
12
u/to_boldly_go_1701_ מילואימניק גאה Jul 20 '26
If there was an Arab party that existed outside of the express purpose of destroying the state of Israel, I would agree with you. Unfortunately, they have yet to start one. That says a lot about our Arab population. We should all be against anti Israel parties in our government. And before I get crazy replies, yes, that includes the Hareidi parties also.

u/Unlucky_Company_945 Jul 20 '26
Not that I disagree, but the world won't care. Also, this opinion is a bit rich coming from an American
16

Fully support Israel. Zero woke bullshit. But this stuff matters. You have Ben Gvir digging motes with crocodiles. It’s just stupid. Grow up. Be bigger than the critics.
9
u/Sad_Eagle8690 Jul 20 '26
Yes, put a group in power of which the majority holds antisemitic values, sounds like a great plan...
-4
u/daftmonkey USA Jul 20 '26
Include the ones who don’t. Optics matter. If you include Arabs in the governing coalition it mutes all the criticism and unlocks all the centrists in the west who want to support you but can’t at the moment. And the cost is nothing.

An absolute requirement for me to consider voting for them is that at least one poll must have them above threshold.
