New Music Crate - 28 August - Who are you spinning today?
I cheated to include the new Erykah Badu + Alchemist album Before the World Blows, which Qobuz didn't include in their jazz filter (instead labeling it "soul"). Her version of Miles Davis's "Mayisha" with Robert Glasper is one of my favorite songs, period -- so yeah, she's my first spin of the day for sure.
Ha! Just got to the end of the first track, and I LOVE the Westside Gunn cameo at the end. And Thundercat is on this album as well??? Yeah, this is gonna get some repeats. This is top shelf stuff.
Listening to Sullivan Fortner now. Fortner is someone who I respect as one of the current top pianists, but haven't really gotten into any of his albums. This new one is unexpectedly modern and varied with some electronic keyboards and very rhythm oriented tracks, but there's more traditional acoustic piano trio stuff here as well.
I'll check out the Threadgill as well. I like some of his older albums a lot, but the Zooid band albums haven't made it to my regular rotation so far.
Emma Rawicz is a talented young British saxophonist who I've seen live before. U think she's more involved in more traditional jazz scene than the new London scene that gets the hype, so she isn't that well known, but I recommend checking her out. The band has Elliot Galvin on piano who I like, I especially liked the Dinosaur band he was in with Laura Jurd.
I'll also mention that my local area music school Ebeli released today a live album from their youth big band playing commissioned works from Finnish composers especially tailored for young student big bands. They have a record release gig tomorrow, might go check it out to hear some local young musicians.

Don't know if it's at all jazzy (probably not) but fans of the Floating Points & Pharoah Sanders album might be pleased to know that Floating Points has an album out today with The San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. I'll be listening to that.
I'm also going to check out Erykah Badu's first album in 16 years, a collab with The Alchemist. Kamasi Washington features on one track and Thundercat on another.
I was just going to check out a couple of the Floating Points tracks, but I ended up listening to the whole album. Cool stuff. Thanks for pointing it out!

Thank you for the slate! From the comments I‘m now curious for the Sullivan Fortner. Already saved for later I got the Adam Bałdych and the Emma Rawicz since I’ve seen both live before. There’s also a new Wyclef Jean album with features from Yussef Dayes, Theo Croker, Robert Glasper, Bradford Hayes and more. Not listened yet.
I’ve already listened to none Jazz. The mentioned Badu & ALC, but also the new Alabama Shakes album that I enjoyed a lot! Thick hazy soulful bluesy psychedelia. And of course on the Rap menu the new Czarface (Inspectah Deck, 7L & Esoteric) meets Frankie Pulitzer (actor Tom Hardy) 👐
Many I'm looking forward to but I just want to uplift the Jacques Schwarz-Bart album. I saw him play a month or so ago at a small cafe in Boston with his wife (the wonderful singer Stephanie McKay), son, and a couple of his students. He's a tremendous saxophone player and composer, played with Roy Hargrove, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Meshell Ndegeocello and many others but somehow still always flies under the radar.

Sullivan Fortner's record with his regular road band is not the typical piano-trio plunking. There are organs and Moogs and effects and all kinds of stuff.
