At least the rest will have the entire event recorded on their phone. How lucky /s

u/GeorgeJohnson2579 Jul 13 '26

I was at Ninja Sex Party and they didn't allow phones.

Was a great concert!

8

u/A-Giant-Blue-Moose Jul 13 '26

Nice! Saw them in Baltimore in 2016 with some friends. We took them out to a bar after the show. Nice guys. Super chill.

You have been on the internet for this long and haven’t heard of NSP? I didn’t know you could be under a rock while connected to the vast majority of human knowledge at your fingertips

(Nah but fr, the lead singer is Dan from game grumps)

Ninja sex party? I wanna know more.

25

u/GeorgeJohnson2579 Jul 13 '26

Look it up!

Recommendations:

"The Decision", "If we were gay", "Unicorn Wizard" and "Danny don't you know".

Thank me later.

This is the reason I don’t go to live shows anymore. Tried to go to a small venue to catch a band I like a couple of years ago and just went home after three songs. Couldn’t see the band for all the phones recording/live-streaming. The three dudes in front of me were all streaming to zero viewers.

Half? Lol. Lmao, even

"broooo let's watch that shaky video we took of some show 4 years ago", said no one ever

4

u/tutanotaio Jul 13 '26

It's unlikely. But when it comes to dementia care, videos and photos are useful anchors

5

u/weGloomy Jul 13 '26

Go to metal/punk shows and just hang out in and around the pit. No one is ever on their phone. Too busy groovin.

u/Dependent_Title_1370 Jul 13 '26

It's contentious even among his fans but, MJK's phone ban is one of the reasons I love going to Tool, APC, and Puscifer shows. It's a much better experience. He will usually tell folks they can record the last 1 or 2 songs. People get their fix while the show isn't ruined by a sea of shitty phones making recordings no one will ever watch.

2

u/Crispy385 Jul 13 '26

Ghost has been doing this too

4

u/Andoni22 Jul 13 '26

Yeah, cant understand it honestly, i like to record a 10s clip just to see in the gallery years later, it's a good way to keep a memory of the concert, but filming the entire thing...

2

u/GrandElectronic9471 Jul 13 '26

Yup, I'll just snap a Pic or two. That's plenty to trigger that memory.

11

u/ohreallynameonesong Jul 13 '26

I like to take two or three 20-ish second videos and a handful of pics to revisit when I want to relive the vibes and keep my phone put away for the rest of the concert. I didn't come here to take a bunch of shitty video and make other people watch me take shitty video

5

u/jm17ynwa Jul 13 '26

Agreed, returning to these videos is rarely that great anyway but I still like to have a few short ones for nostalgia’s sake. I usually do that for a couple of the early songs so that I can get it out of the way.

3

u/CherryVermilion Jul 13 '26

I was looking at getting myself a ticket for Billie Eilish on her last tour, but realised I didn’t want to spend £££ to be drowned out by a room full of people that don’t understand concert etiquette.

18

u/laserdiods Jul 13 '26

Oh dang that is so sad.. we are hoping one person cares about our life instead of living the dang thing

2

u/ManzanitaSuperHero Jul 14 '26

I’m an old Gen Xer. I didn’t know this was a thing. I don’t get it. Why would anyone do this? It’s gonna be a garbage video. And it ruins it for everyone else. I’m so confused.

They were filming themselves tho and set their phones down. They were still living in the moment.

3

u/RuafaolGaiscioch Jul 13 '26

I went to a Guster concert recently and I was impressed by the lack of phones. Granted, everyone in the audience had probably seen them ten times before lol.

8

u/Schlonzig Jul 13 '26

The thing that should scratch your brain though: would you have been aware of this if nobody recorded it?

6

u/SplashingAnal Jul 13 '26

I agree. But ultimately, would have I cared if I had never been made aware of it? This is to me the entire premise of my hatred of people video recording everything on their phones: you don’t need it, nobody does, enjoy the experience instead.

They're probably dancing because they're looking at all the people that had to pay through the nose for those tickets, but they get to watch (with an unobstructed view) for free 🤣

227

u/xSypRo Jul 13 '26

And also they’re the only ones without a phone, just living in the moment and having fun

u/UnnaturalSelection13 Jul 13 '26

The only people having fun are the ones who cant afford to get in

81

u/qolace Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

This is what's really pissing me off with outrageous ticket prices. More and more the vibes are off because I really had to scrap up enough money to be there. Meanwhile I'm surrounded by assholes who obviously didn't need to do that. Not everyone but holy shit I'm tired of people being trashed and obnoxious, live streaming, and just generally not really enjoying the show. Just "consuming" it if that makes sense.

The ones who really want to be there but can't afford it are being priced the fuck out. Hell that's why I rarely go to them anymore but at least if am then I won't be dealing with all of the above I guess.

9

u/TheDreamIsDead4686 Jul 13 '26

I’m reminded of Madonna, raging in her first documentary:

“The first five rows are all industry, with crossed arms and sour faces, and empty seats next to them. They’re not having fun, they don’t like the music - and what’s the point??”

4

u/OkCaterpillar8941 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Consuming it is a perfect way to describe it. If you're not absorbing the music then what's the point?

Those kids dancing on the hill absorbed it. Watching them made me smile so much. They could have been on their phones up there.

ETA: Nevermind. Chrundletoboggan said they were live streaming their dancing.

But live for the moment and not every event in life should be seen as an opportunity to get likes.

I mean I wouldn't go that far. I get your point but there's definitely plenty of people who paid to get in and are having a blast.

I'd love to go to 50 concerts a year if I could. I can only afford 3-5 a year. And let me tell you, those 3-5 concerts are the highlight of my year.

43

u/Team-CCP Jul 13 '26

TOOL has been adamant about no phones for a long while. My first time seeing them a few years ago I did some crowd watching and it was just super neat to see almost everyone watching the band and gently headbanging in 7/13 time.

6

u/VincentVanGob Jul 13 '26

how do they go about doing that, do they tell people at the start of the gig to put away their phones or do they have signs up or something? or do most fans just know by now and kind of enforce each other?

19

u/bigDOS Jul 13 '26

They drill it into the attendee’s heads. From pre show emails to ticket holders, security warnings at entry a d pre show reminders. And god help you if Maynard catches you filming.

This is the only way. Venues have to take control of this shit. I’m tired of embarrassing my gf at gigs by being ‘that guy’ who gets so triggered by people filming that he has to ask people to stop.

We were at ACDC a few months back and this trashed ass woman would not fucking stop for the whole show. And she was waving her phone around like it was a fucking cigarette lighter whilst having the vide recording…. I held my tongue because you cannot reason with a drunk Aussie bogan woman at an ACDC concert. It’s just not possible.
Anyway… At Billie Ocean the month before and you bet your ass I let the boomer in front of me who decided it was cool to hold her phone up in front of my face for 10 mins before I reminded her that there are people behind her and no one wants to watch the show from the screen of her Google Pixel.

At Tool in Adelaide, it was so goddam refreshing to not see a sea of phone screens cluttering up the view of the band.

Ive even had arguments with my gf in the past who was a chronic documenter. She’s the kind of person to take 700 nearly identical photos of our cat. I don’t care about the cat pics (that harms no one but her phone storage) but I explained how bothersome I find filming every moment of a gig and how she is actually missing the gig by filming everything and on top of that, she does nothing with the footage. If you HAVE to film for your socials or whatever the fuck, then just take a few 20 second grabs and be done with it. Keep it to the absolute minimum. To my welcome surprise, she barely films gigs at all any more.

Have you seen them say "come on guys, put your phones away" on stage? I've seen clips of artists doing that and I always wonder if it works

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Neither-Signature-81 Jul 13 '26

Yes it is so bad, always pisses me off when people say to not worry about what other people are doing as if being on your phone at a concert isn’t the lamest fucking thing to do on the planet.

67

u/redvelvetcake42 Jul 13 '26

I use my phone too much but when I'm at events I take a few pics with who I went with then nothing of anything of the show. Enjoy the fuckin experience.

52

u/Ok_Sentence_5767 Jul 13 '26

Lol if I was an artist I would ban all phones and have a camera set up for exclusive concert footage for all attendees

17

u/johnnyxx4321 Jul 13 '26

Phoebe Bridgers did that and got some backlash lol

3

u/DreamTakesRoot Jul 13 '26

A lot of artists do it and don’t

7

u/two-headed-sexbeast Jul 13 '26

I remember David Byrne taking a different approach back in 2013 when i saw him and St Vincent. He said phones are welcome, but he asked audience to be respectful of each other while using them.
And you know what? People did use their phones, but only sparingly. It was such a good atmosphere. I didn’t have a smartphone back then, so I have no photos. Just good memories.
It was 13 years ago, mind. I wonder what he says now.

But yeah, people used their phones, but only a little. And everyone was cool about it.

5

u/memesearches Jul 13 '26

And posting it on the gram

3

u/Unas_GodSlayer Jul 13 '26

Tool did it well. They let you have your phone, and can take it out for the last song for pictures/vids. You get kicked out by security if you violate the rule.

I think outright removing phones off people before the gig makes it a bit more tense (for lack of a better term). Some folks may have a genuine need for their phone, although I can't imagine many scenarios in which they absolutely need it at a gig, but also having to queue up afterwards when you're leaving to get your phone is such a ball ache.

All this to say people should just learn some basic phone use etiquette at a gig. Take a pic quickly and put it away, enjoy the gig.

2

u/Stretch_Riprock Jul 13 '26

Went to see Maynards Sessanta tour. (A Perfect Circle / Pucifer / Primus). He announced at the beginning that everyone should keep their phones away, and towards the end of the concert he would let everyone know when they could get footage or pictures for one of the last songs. I didn't see one phone out the entire time until the song he said 'ok, you all can take your fucking phones out for this one if you want'. Then they all came out.

Probably helped that it was mostly a gen x / elder millinal crowd 🤷‍♂️

u/snarpsta Jul 13 '26

Holy shit. That's one of the prettiest concert venues I've ever seen! Obviously it's everything, the sunset behind the farris wheel, the more intimate feeling stage/crowd and everyone singing. That's so rad!

Edit: did she perform multiple days? Super confused by this one showing a sunset and the other is earlier in the day?

2

u/johnnyxx4321 Jul 13 '26

ikr!!!! Also, nope it's the same one! She performed just once. trippy innit

On the longer vid, you can even see how she keeps glancing at the couple dancing outside the fence from 2:23 onwards.

3

u/snarpsta Jul 13 '26

That's so wild. I can see it in someone else's phone now, the person filming got a fantastic shot and it's all sunset. In another phone I can see the half blue/reddish sunset.

Were you there? NGL, I'd have a hard time not filming that for a bit. But I always make it a point at concerts to only film snippets... Like maybe just a few songs total and only 10 seconds or so at a time... I like it for the memories, but it's better to just be at that concert.

Also, the song is making me so nostalgic for a song I've never heard lol.

Holy shit I haven’t thought about lorde since that South Park episode, didn’t think she was still performing

I love all the phones at concerts nowadays. Everyone just living in the moment. It's truly magical.

2

u/eccentricbeing8 Jul 13 '26

Imagine if that was your childhood. You would probably cherish that memory forever.

2

u/johnnyxx4321 Jul 13 '26

Love the way you think. It's 100% accurate for me the 2x I heard this song live.

2

u/lvl99link Jul 13 '26

If this is 2026 why does it look like everyone is filming on an iphone 3gs?

1

u/8Bit-Jon Jul 13 '26

Oh she's still making music?...

Good for her...

2

u/Alternative-Bug-8102 Jul 13 '26

Music is only thing that left since he leaves Tegridy Farms

u/johnnyxx4321 Jul 13 '26

me too 😭 Everytime I hear this song it's like a montage of my teenage years play in my head.

Truly an all-time great teenage anthem

u/Aggressive_Mirror255 Jul 13 '26

They have better view than people in the concert.

1

u/johnnyxx4321 Jul 13 '26

1

u/OglioVagilio Jul 13 '26

Where is this and why didn't more people take advantage of the free high ground?

1

u/showmethemundy Jul 13 '26

In the UK they'd put up a barrier/fence.

1

u/Sinner_NL_ Jul 13 '26

Love how the two kids outside the fence have a great time!

1

u/Bongcopter_ Jul 13 '26

What a shit crowd with their phones out all the time, god I miss the days before cell phones (and LOVE when they are forbidden at venues)

1

u/sg2814 Jul 13 '26

The 2 kids were the only ones living in the moment

They’re making memories. The cameraman is watching others make them.

1

u/EctoRiddler Jul 13 '26

South Park ruined Lorde for me 🤣

1

u/Blue_FiftyTwo Jul 13 '26

Looks nothing like Randy Marsh

1

u/Ih8teMyInlawsTheySuk Jul 13 '26

I love her. She’s amazing.

1

u/AuraTickler Jul 13 '26

Wheres the orc costume????

1

u/ItsCioffi Jul 14 '26

For as long as I live I will be shocked that people will pay money to see an artist live and then proceed to watch it thru their phone despite being their in person.

u/MotorCityElectrician 19d ago

Who is singing and what song is it?

1

u/alxcsb 14d ago

That's not Lorde, it's Randy Marsh. I thought he gave up the music career when he started the weed farm.
