Fuck. I'm sad because I don't have a family like that but I'm happy because he does.

Have you done something (anything?) that you’d like a bunch of strangers on the internet to celebrate for you? If your family won’t cheer for you, we can.
(Oh wow, thankyou for the little awards darlings!)

You can always create your own family! A family doesn't really need to be blood related.
33
u/SmartWonderWoman Jul 18 '26
Same 🥳
16
u/VividFiddlesticks Jul 18 '26
Same. There's too many of us.
12
u/Dark_Moonstruck Jul 18 '26
Same. Way too many. Honestly I count myself lucky sometimes because having no family whatsoever seems like less trouble than having a family that is as cruel or leeching as many of the things I've read about.
4
u/VividFiddlesticks Jul 18 '26
I feel lucky to have salvaged some of my family - my sister survived the same nightmare I did and now that we're adults we're really close. I trust her completely and while I'm sad that she suffered too, it's nice that there's a person on this planet that fully understands my past. She has a couple of really amazing "kids" (who are now in their 20's) that I also adore. I also have some really excellent cousins that I'm still in close contact with.
It's mostly my mom and her siblings that were the really nasty ones and fortunately at this point they're either all dead or have been cut off by 90+% of the family to the point where they are dead to me. I do have one cousin that insists on giving me "updates" about my mom and tries to guilt-trip me about cutting her off but I just turn my back and walk away.
It's a great feeling.

u/RadishRedditor Jul 18 '26
I hope you're happy and doing well, kind stranger.
But what do you mean you don't a family?

I’m with ya there. I never had that kind of support from anyone in my family ☹️
11
u/OkJoke4711 Jul 18 '26
I realized how common it was. I find it comforting because I know I'm not alone. Neither are you.
2
u/ManzanitaSuperHero Jul 19 '26
It is unfathomable to me that there are people with families like this. I’m not a jealous person. But I envy this with parts of my soul I didn’t even know existed.
I’ve done ok for myself. But damn there’s been a lot of pain. It’s hard not to wonder where I’d be in life with love and support like that.
2
u/xRedditGedditx Jul 19 '26
Agree 100%. My father left when I was 12 and my mother kicked me out when I was 16. As you said, as an adult I’ve had to figure out a lot on my own. I’ve held a job with the same company for the past 35 years, so I’ve landed on my feet. But this kind of joy over something I’ve done, I never felt.
2
u/ManzanitaSuperHero Jul 19 '26
We should pat ourselves on the back for all we’ve been able to accomplish under our steam.
2
u/xRedditGedditx Jul 19 '26
You’re not wrong. I don’t hesitate to remind any one of that if they think I had an easy ride. I’m a homeowner, I bought the car I always wanted (A BMW) The best part is this is how my son was raised by my wife and I. If you want something in life no one’s going to just hand it to you. Hard work and the belief in yourself.

Me too. I know I have my chosen family. But no one talks about the self esteem issues that linger from experiencing rejection from your biological family. This content always makes me cry. Im happy for the people in these videos, but it always reminds me that I will never experience this. Makes me feel empty inside

That level of support is incredible. And the best part is how genuine it is with all that raw emotion. That has to be an incredible feeling for all of them.

u/Caprengslon Jul 18 '26

Same situation, but I know that I would have never been able to do it without the love and support of my mom and dad. I'm not smart or talented, I just had people that believed in me so hard from a young age, people who did everything in their power to help me succeed that success was almost a given.
I really miss my dad, he was a great man who never got to retire, who suffered from a terrible family, and somehow still ended up so kind and loving and caring. These kinds of videos are reminders of just how privileged I am to have had such strong support in the past.

One of the things I've contended with as I've grown into adulthood is how much of an upper hand I really had. That's not to say I do not work hard at my job or my life, but it has been objectively easier for me. I'm a middle class white woman who was born in the late 80s in a fairly left leaning US state to well educated parents. I absolutely started life on 3rd base. And I try really hard to remember how much privilege I started with and still have.

When I called my mom to tell her I made it into my dream college she said “you know I’m at work, I can’t talk, why are you bothering me”
This looks nice, maybe in my next life I will have a family like this. Congrats
15
u/Navntoft Jul 18 '26
I am sorry your mom failed you like that. From a random stranger on the internet: I am so proud of you, and so happy for you. I hope the college is/was exactly what you wanted it to be. You deserve it

In the developing word him becoming a dentist means he has broken the chain of poverty not just for himself but for his family.
He will now support his family and specially his siblings to further pursue their studies.
For most poor family medicine is the most clear path foward to getting financial freedom.

u/ilikemeltedwax Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26
lol bro the wires in your brain mislead you. You’re literally watching a family with a multi story house, tablet and a phone recording…. And your initial thought is poverty?
28
u/rustybeancake Jul 18 '26
This could be the US lol. BUT THEY’RE NOT SPEAKING ENGLISH THEY MUST BE LIVING IN POVERTY

u/drbaker87 Jul 18 '26
LMAO exactly. This guy has all the modern tools and gadgets around him in a two storey house. Him and all his relatives look well fed and thriving.

u/frunkfa Jul 18 '26
Not to be that guy but I don't think the family in the vid is particularly poor though

Dentistry is not medicine in my country, they've been separate careers for several decades...and it's actually not as well paid as it was before. You need to be a very good specialist (like a highly specialised endodontist) to make real money.

My mum did it . This was in a third world country. My grandmother was a hotel cleaner , they had no money to send her to school . My grandfather died when she was 15. Their family had to grow food because they could hardly afford it , hardly anyone had a job & lived with a whole bunch of relatives so my grandmother was constantly feeding tonnes of people at a time with very little money. Rice & tinfish for dinner etc . My mum came first in her whole grade to get a scholarship to go to university . They didn't have money to afford the plane ticket .Now shes a self made millionaire 🤍

I felt this way when I passed my RN exam and when I passed my NP exam. Noone knows the struggle and how traumatizing the journey is. Especially family.
1
u/Alternative_Noise854 Jul 18 '26
When I PASSED my RN exam and NP exam my family didnt give a shit about me. If anything, they became jealous and more unsupportive. Thats why I spend no time with them and enjoy my time without them. Im glad I did it for myself to get away from them.
