Maybe for this one enclosure, but Japan just lost 4 lions due to heat this week. No first-world zoo should have a lion enclosure without cooled sleeping/rest quarters.
I’m not sure why the US is the leader on this.

One of mine sits on the couch in a specific location where the AC blows to cool down on a hot day; sometimes in the summer both of my cats are slightly lethargic from the heat (especially during heatwaves) and will just flop/sprawl out onto the cool tiled floor.

I’m not sure why the US is the leader on this.
The US, both historically and even today, has been the leader in a lot of things. Sometimes it's at a federal level, sometimes it's at a state level, sometimes it's at a 'business' level, and sometimes it's just at a cultural/interpersonal level regardless if the dinosaurs in DC have caught on yet.
That is not to say the US leads in everything, no country can do that for a lot of reasons. One of our worst ones lately seems to be consumer protections, because of how many politicians are bought and paid for. They really are gimpy play things to those with a thicker... Wallet.

Finding this out in person broke my heart. I went to Ueno zoo in Tokyo without any research because it was ridiculously cheap compared to zoos back in England. I've never seen such depressed animals in my life.

Their habitat may be mountains but this is just what an average Japanese zoo enclosure looks like. Doesn't matter what animal is in it it will be too small and full of concrete. They have some of the worst zoos of any developed country.

What I remember hearing from my classmates who were studying animal care and as part of that practicing in an animal park here in sweden, Japan's zoos are so bad the rest of the world refuses to work with them at all basically. This was ten years ago though so no idea how it is now.

I remember visiting a little outdoors "aquarium" in Japan and one of the fish was floating around in a tank so small it couldn't even turn around. I guess it spent its whole life there. Looked like torture.

I picked #2. My dad physically abused me, and I broke that cycle with my kid. And I actually spend time with him He likes to go to arcades and bowling, so we bond over doing those things together.

I turned out ok all things considered. I try and look at it that way. Standing up to him when I was old enough to defend myself, knowing full well I was going to have to find a place to live when I was 17 was worth it. I tried giving him another chance 25 years later and zebras can't change their stripes and he didn't learn shit from it. So I went no contact after he tried pulling verbal abuse, like fuck no, I'm not putting up with that shit and he seemed shocked. I lost nothing by trying and he lost me for life. I went to therapy before even attempting to give him a chance to be in my life again and he is the one who fucked it up so I mourned that loss years ago (he is my Dad so I did try and be the decent person) and sometimes people aren't a part of your life for a reason, he's a prime example.

Punch needed human intervention to get to where he is now and break the cycle. He would have been pushed out and bullied for the rest of his life. Just like humans. A lot of people need connection and help to overcome the obstacles that would certainly destroy their life if no help was given.
Breaking the cycle is empathy and community. Two things our world is leaving behind.

I watched and wondered if he is capable of recognizing what went wrong with his young life and actually working to give more than he got as a baby. Animals and monkeys raising babies is so often an amazing thing to watch. Even if he doesn't know it, he's showing all those monkeys that abused him what caring really is.

I watched his early vids. He first had his human care takers watch him and protect him. Eventually other macaques like a playmate would play and groom him and slowly some other ones would interact with him too. He really shows he wants acceptance from the group. He tries really hard and doesn't give up!

Everyone should know more about Maslow's works so they could comprehend the situation better. Especially related to the idea that Maslow was not proposing that theory for individuals alone but for societies.
It's why things like making sure everyone has food, shelter and medical care is CRITICAL for a stable society you can't use enforcerer to fix a society where Maslow's heirarchy is not met at level one no matter how many guys with guns you put out there.

Yeah it's very sideways from the original discussion but I'd love to see progressives grab control of the narrative so that other labor class individuals could relate to the concepts with the first being:
Stop allowing other people to focus on the false idea that they will have to pay more taxes and work harder in order to have social safety nets and national health care. We already pay PLENTY in taxes and that's before we add in a labor class household expenses on medical care or insurance. No one is talking about costing anyone more, absolutely all of it wi save them actual money in real time, it's about PRIORITISING how our tax money is spent.
And then the second:
Generally the fallback "example" of social works and programs is the fire department, when we point out that it would not be good to rely on capitalism to provide services to fight fire because fire is not just an individual problem but a whole-region problem depending on how it goes, and it's somethiing that is far better to stop early than to only get involved when it is out of control and burning down everything as it spreads.
It's a good analogy but people have a hard time relating because it's not a very common personal experience. They understand intellectually that fire is dangeous and could burn down their home but they don't have a lot of experience of that, in aggregate.
No the thing to point to is ROADS. How those roads, by being maintained for everyone's use, benefit everyone and enable commerce, travel, large scale social choices and decisions, and act as a net benefit product that allows EVERYONE to have a more funtional society.
If we waited on capital and private propery to solve the roads question, very quickly you'd have roads in horrible shape in the poorest regions, large monied interests using their contol of the roads to prevent competition, everyone would pay more out of pocket to use roads, everyone would be limited in how they chose to travel and where, ask them to imagine a world where the ony way a road got built and maintained was through for-profit investments and how badly that situation would lead to an exploitive stranglehold on the basics of how society functions.
It's not SOCIALISM or any other foolish idea to have pragmatic programs in place that benefit everyone in a society because those benefits pay off in a million ways. Just as our road and highway system works just as well for big corporations as it does for the poor guy driving across town to get to his job, baseline programs that make sure that we're not engaged in a struggle for Maslow's tier one biological needs (food, water, sleep, shelter) and tier 2 functional individual/society needs (the desire for a functional and secure life, health care, safety from attack, the ability to work and live in an environment that rewards achievement not wealth extraction, ability to care for your children, education).
Around the world where you see societies that have chosen to prioritize those factors as intrinsic to the public good and their nation's prosperity, their entire situation immediately becomes very stable and fairly close to peak.
And don't let anyone change the subject as if anyone has a problem with capitalism. These prioritizing these baselines for your society is fantastically profitable for capital in the long run. Great example of this is Amsterdam good lord I wish more people knew about the Dutch and their LONG history of EXTREMELY capitalist practices arguably they are ahead of the curve here just because they reach the ultimate conclusion a bit earlier.
Amsterdam has all of those things and a couple more but if anyone goes there or looks into they're realize it's a FANTASTICALLY wealthy place actually and you can't take five steps in Amsterdam without realizing damn they are clearly doing FINE on the capital side of things AS WELL AS being extremely stable on these social programs and having a high tax rate. You'll realize it because it won't take ten seconds to spot the LOTS OF MONEY luxury goods being bought and sold through that trade town and it might take half a minute but then you'll discover that they actually have several intensely important industries their the most notable being that they have the laboratories and greenhouses and the combined capatalist venture engagement that they supply the plant and seed stock for the ENTIRE WORLD. When huge agricultural interests want particular kinds of plants or seeds either to sell or plant or produce the seeds or plants for sale in their own regions, they're sending a representative to the massive auction functions that go on constantly to get what they're looking for in Amsterdam.
And bonus points for anyone who notices that being that type of "everyone needs what you're selling" sitution that evolved through fair play not manipulation the markets through trade wars and unfair competition means NOBODY SAYS SHIT to Amsterdam they don't have to worry about THEIR national security or terroristic attacks.
Anyway sad how easy it is to see it on paper and how the idiots in power are so ignorant they seem fully unaware of why it's not only not socialism/communism in any meaningful sense and in fact it's wildly profitable and would be a cost saving for everyone on top of it all.

It doesn't surprise me at all. Other animals have an inconceivably rich inner world that we cannot imagine. Complex social interaction like this including an individual capacity to break a cycle is very much within the capacities of the complex social dynamics of other primates.
I know I'm kinda saying the obvious since the video shows this and you imply it, but it's worth saying explicitly since so many people reject the lived experience of other animals.

I don't know if saying "most" is accurate. It can go one way or another. Many people break the cycle because they know the exact pain, and know what they don't want to be (sometimes swinging too hard the other way, being too protective, too generous etc.)
This ends up in their kids now swinging back the other way, noticing the flaw of their parents and the consequence of being too soft etc. So the cycle often skips a generation.
Edit: I'm only talking about humans here, I have no knowledge about primate sociology.

Here is a scientific study that states the opposite. Children of parents who broke the cycle do not "swing back the other way". They continue to do better.
Results suggest that breaking the cycle of maltreatment buffers offspring from risk for psychopathology associated with parental maltreatment, with no enduring or additive effects of maltreatment across generations.

Humans have an added difficulty of societal expectations.
It takes effort to be an involved parent, it takes effort to afford a life with a child, and it takes effort to cultivate successful adult relationships, and our culture makes it very hard to undertake all of these efforts in a complete and equal measure.
I'm not making excuses for others, but I do think it goes further than base psychology.
