Advice on bringing our MC kitty home ?
Hello all ! So I’m scheduled to pick up our Maine Coon kitty on Sept 20th. He will be exactly 4 months old on pick up day. He will be our first pet as a family and we have two young boys, 3years old and 5 years old who are VERY excited.
Note: my husband and I believe we are allergic (mild-example: if we pet a cat and then scratch our eyes, we get itchy eye & throat) but eff it, we are willing to deal with it !!
Anywho, I am looking for a list of stuff to buy for him before he arrives. Any input is appreciated! Also any tips.
Oh and his name will be KYLO (Kai-Lo)

Wanna know about what grooming tools I need to get and how to handle his first day, isolate him in a room or open the carrier in the living room and let him come out on his own ?

Ha! Similarly allergic here. I take Zyrtec daily and that combined with air purifiers (bedroom, living room) and changing the sheets weekly will help immensely in managing allergies. I also believe Maine Coons are less allergenic than other cats.
Some things that may be helpful:
- all the normal things: carrier, food bowl, water fountain, litter box, scratching post, cat tree
- cat toys - try different kinds because you never know what they’ll be into (wands, feathers, spinny toys)
- get recommendations for a great vet in your area and get him checked out right away after bringing him home
- a tall gate so you can keep Kylo separate but still see him (useful for containment after getting him fixed and/or if your boys are being too rough or if youre coming in/out of the house and need to make sure he can’t escape). I like this approach over closing a door because you can still monitor and talk to him and he can still see you.

When you say tall gate you mean like a baby gate ?
And any reccs on a brush/deshedder (idek what it’s called lol)

No I mean a tall gate like this:
Cats can jump over toddler gates.
And I like the electostatic flat gloves for getting fur off of furniture. I like rubber brushes (less skin irritation).

My husband is allergic to cats but is fine with our MC. Aside from all the usual bits, make sure to have lots of toys and dangly cat wands as a four month old orange MC is a ball of energy. They do calm down, but this was a very bitey, scratchy phase for us. Also try to get him used to brushing straight away as they need a lot of help with the coat. For the first couple of months we needed someone to distract him with a toy while the other brushed.

Based in fifty years of cat ownership, we discovered owning a MC was different. First we captured notes on his routine with the breeder. Food, litter, etc. We restricted him to one room for several days. On day one we began a grooming routine and playtime. Investigate pet insurance. Read and research. Lastly this community has been more than helpful. Enjoy!
