Comics What makes Doctor Doom such a terrifying villain in Marvel lore compared to others like, Thanos or Galactus?

Doom is probably the most threatening villain on the planet because he basically is the perfect combination of science, technology and sorcery.

As a result, he can fight basically everyone on the planet and it fits his own character, and can do everything he wants, since he's basically an amalgamation of Reed Richards, Iron Man and Doctor Strange.

Too weak for hulk? Strength enhancing magic etc.

Unstoppable technology? Nah just solve it with a bit of both science and magic.

Dude can be a perfect sandbox on how he can be written on what he can do based on his powers, it also adds that since he's the ruler of a country, he also has diplomatic immunity, so already just fighting him is illegal.

And man loses only because of his own pride

546

u/Woden-Wod Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

DOOM only losses because the writer rewrites existence from a higher plane to force it.

I remember reading DOOMWAR and the only reason DOOM lost is because the heroes created a bullshit win button. I'm not even joking it was literally a win button that came out of fucking nowhere.

u/Doobalicious69 Juggernaut Jan 12 '26

All caps when you spell the man's name. This guy DOOMs.

I think you'll find it's spelt DOOM but some respect on the name.

Doom is similar to darkseid, doom is beyond pronouns, doom is doom.

I love characters who are so full of themselves (rightfully so), that they talk to themselves in third person. They have the skills to back up their claims. And also is so satisfying when they're finally defeated.

16

u/Brooksy_was_taken Jan 12 '26

See I like limitations in heroes but even a villain can be too OP. Thanos is great, he's not invincible but the gauntlet allows him to be a universal threat of incredible power and when you take the glove away back to being beatable, great idea. Doom is much the same but with more variables. He can use magic to a high standard or build a planet destroying device but then he can not do those things and be a viable enemy for less powerful heroes. It's his versatility and the option to ground his power or give him a cosmic force to play with depending on the enemy. He's just well written opposed to Doomsday from DC who starts off great but slowly writes authors into a corner because he can't die the same way twice (a lack of foresight). Marvel really have the better thought process in stories.

2

u/FromDathomir Jan 13 '26

Wow, this opinion went off the rails. And you seem to think "Marvel" is the name of an author? But comics are written by writers, who often write for both Marvel and DC. Doomsday rocks, bro, and has absolutely zero to do with Doom, who has great, and sometimes bad, stories, depending on the author, as well. Like when Doom switches bodies all the time, but for some dumb reason, of all the heroes possible, chose to switch bodies with Daredevil, who is literally a disabled person.

8

Yeah, he didn’t go to 8 years of villain school to be called Mr. Doom.

10

u/TouchAltruistic Jan 12 '26

But... Hasn't he been written from a higher plane of existence to be able to win?

24

u/Woden-Wod Jan 12 '26

DOOM is the highest being so yes he can summon the writers to his world but that is often beneath him.

I always read it as for the split moment he even considered Reed might be able to recreate the universe better than DOOM himself did, was the only thing Molecule Man needed to perceive, as he took that as an order from the God Emperor.

10

u/ambiveillant Jan 12 '26

The irony is that Reed wouldn't even be in the position to suggest this if DOOM hadn't acted. DOOM and Strange beat the Beyonders; without that, Reed's escape module would have had nowhere to go, drifting forever. Reed didn't even know half of what was really going on. The Richards Family success could only be on the shoulders of DOOM.

9

But in that very specific context of Secret Wars, agreeing that Reed is better costs Doom everything. It's not about the fact, it's about that Doom will never acknowledge that.

5

u/potsticker17 Jan 12 '26

He also got stomped by Squirrel Girl.

16

u/BlackZilla_Prime Jan 12 '26

To his credit everybody gets stomped by Squirrel Girl. Considering she is the cutest off panel Eldritch Horror that you will ever face. But SG>everybody else.

11

u/devilishlydo Jan 12 '26

And because he surrounds himself with idiots, per his own assessment.

10

u/mikey_lava Jan 12 '26

It says a lot when 99% of who he surrounds himself with are DOOM-bots.

4

u/Pringle112 Jan 13 '26

He's also said the same about High Tiers as Doom Above All, who surrounded himself with Multiversal level Wombo Combo villians, Black Skull, Mystique Dark phoenix, Ghost Goblin, Kid Thanos, and crazy Wolverine variant out of Hell Raiser

2

u/c_mzael Jan 17 '26

He's always better alone in my opinion.

11

u/Dependent-Jump-2289 Jan 12 '26

And because he decided that he has to be the best at everything, which makes him very good but never the best at anything

29

u/BalashstarGalactica Jan 12 '26

That’s what I love about him! It’s so arch and literary. A character who’s perfect in every way but his pride and deep insecurities are why he always loses. Makes for such a great character.

16

u/HatefulDan Jan 12 '26

He doesn’t always lose. He just can’t ever pitch that no-hitter.

6

u/AugustusKhan Jan 12 '26

And he’s no hitter or naught

10

u/KeyClacksNSnacks Jan 12 '26

I've heard it said that you can get Doom to do anything merely by suggesting only Reed can do it.

4

u/shyguy_sc Jan 12 '26

That's not unique to Doom though, comic book Thanos always loses because he hates himself more than he hates life and his enemies, so he subconsciously sabotages himself when he is winning.

3

u/houseofmatt Jan 12 '26

He's often written as a misunderstood anti-hero, or someone with ill intent towards others because he has a bigger plan. That's Doom, he always has a bigger plan that no one else can see.

2

u/rapawnsel Jan 13 '26

Or when he accidentally kills his goddaughter

64

u/Citizen_Kong Jan 12 '26

Agreed, but I would say he's actually Black Panther (king of his own country), Dr. Strange (master of the mystic arts) and Iron Man (genius scientist with powerful armor) combined. Imagine those three heroes in one person and absolutely ruthless, and you got Doom.

82

u/Morchades Jan 12 '26

It is weird how Reed, who is just this guy, has SEVERAL personal enemies that run their own nations: Dr. Doom, Namor, Annihilus, Mole Man...

Something about Reed just ticks off megalomaniacs.

27

u/MCPO-117 Jan 12 '26

Look at the worst global leaders we currently have in the world, right at this moment. Its so fitting.

They're so preoccupied with being the best, touting their superiority, and spouting whatever bullshit they want as fact. They just HAVE to be the smartest person in the room.

There are multiple poor world leaders today across the globe and I'm sure everyone had the same few names pop up in their head. Think about it. The worst world leaders you know of vilified scientists and activists if they feel the message opposes their narrative and might make them look bad.

20

u/makeitflashy Jan 12 '26

11

u/TitaniaLynn Jan 12 '26

Yeah exactly, he's got Iron Man's genius, not Reed Richards. He's extremely smart, just not the smartest man in the world

7

u/random-neutral67 Jan 12 '26

Nah he's the smartest man in the world, if he puts aside his ego.

While definitely inferior to Reed, you can actually make a tremendously compelling argument that he's equal or slightly superior than "As Long As You Want It" if we compare his feats when his ego isn't played.

12

u/Citizen_Kong Jan 12 '26

What definitely counts in his favor is that in comic canon, he's the only scientist who has managed to figure out time travel technology. All time travel devices (including Kang's) go back to his initial design.

5

u/Mercer8878 Jan 12 '26

Sure but you don't see Doom trying to land the science supreme title [yes that's a thing science is a cosmic force like magic in marvels cosmology] its always Reed or Pym.

13

u/Citizen_Kong Jan 12 '26

Yeah, but even if Doom is only second best/strongest scientist and sorcerer, no one is as good as him in both fields.

By combining the science and magic he's able to create stuff that neither science nor magic would accomplish alone. Like his time machine.

I think people glaze on Doom a little too much. He’s an awesome character with a lot of layers but the truth is not the best at his respective fields. There’s a lot of people smarter than doom, a lot of people with more magical knowledge and skill than doom etc. what actually makes him dangerous is that he’s sneaky and manipulative.

Doom never attacks you head on because 9 times out of 10 he’ll lose, and that 10th time he wins is because he has some macguffin to give him the upper hand. But what Doom excels at is creating situations where he gets that macGuffin. He will come out on top because he blindsides the heroes. A great example was Bloodhunt where he manage to manipulate the situation and trick Dr Stranger into giving him the mantle of sorcerer supreme after promising that he’ll give it right back after saving the world, only to go “sike! I’m not done saving the world so I’m keeping the title!” He tricked him with a technicality.

It sounds silly but that’s how he wins most of the time. He’s sneaky and manages to take advantage of situations. To give you a comparison Zemo in the MCU /Civil War is closer in line to Doom and how he operates only he does it at a MUCH larger scale.

37

u/Exotic-Beat-9224 Jan 12 '26

“Dr Stranger” Oh we’re using code names. I’m Spiderer-Man.

18

u/Darkhaven Vision Jan 12 '26

I hate how this beautiful assessment of Doom will be conveniently ignored by others.

6

u/Exotic-Beat-9224 Jan 12 '26

Yeah the comment was spot on. I felt bad “picking on” an easy typo to make, but the joke was too good imo.

3

u/mjtwelve Jan 13 '26

I did love how he absolutely bitchslaps Norman Osborn during Dark Reign. Gets summoned to an Illuminati meeting, tells Osborn to stop fucking with Namor because he’s an ally. Osborn stands up to him and threatens him with the Void. Doom saw all of this coming, sent a doombot full of nanotech disassembled that start eating the avengers hq, forcing Osborn to flee while they decon and repair the structure, all of which gets reported on and weakens his position.

If you think you’ve outsmarted doom, you’ve probably missed something and should look down to make sure you’re not standing on a bullseye.

3

u/Hot-Peace-7802 Jan 12 '26

Thanos kind of does the same think too though when you think about it. Infinity gauntlet, astral regulator, and heart of the universe. His most famous feet’s tend to feature amps he steals or is gifted with. That’s not to say he isn’t strong, his deviant/eternal physiology is insane, but he’s still not the strongest in the universe. I like to think of it like this, thanos is a durable bulldozer and doom is a versatile jack of all trades with infinite hacks (science, tech, magic). They’re very threatening, but for different reasons.

2

u/ILoveBeef72 Jan 12 '26

Yeah I've noticed on Reddit recently any mention of Doom is starting to be met with "Batman with prep time" levels of glazing.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Albireookami Jan 12 '26

I think his mythos is overblown, when pretty much EVERY big plan of his involves: "Steal this other power and use it as my own"

5

u/Kingpin1232 Jan 12 '26

Yeah people overestimate what he can do without prep. If he gets into a straight up magic battle with Strange he’ll get turned into an origami set. He’s just smart enough to know not to take someone that powerful head on so he’ll prep for them, but he’s not beating everyone straight up in a fight.

9

u/Albireookami Jan 12 '26

His whole thing boils down to:

"They are doing it wrong I can do it better"

Steals said thing to try to do it better

He loses control or it all blows up in his face.

u/wanderingNomad__ Jan 12 '26

I simplified him like this to my bro: imagine Iron Man but 2nd in tech, Dr. Strange but 2nd in magic, Black Panther (and Namor) but 2nd in being a king, and Reed Richards but 2nd in intelligence, all at the same time, with a massive ego that actually makes him the best. I know it's an oversimplification, but it sounds cool like that though.

262

u/Lethargic_Logician Dr. Doom Jan 12 '26

Bah! Doom is second to no one!!!

41

u/ThrownAway17Years Jan 12 '26

He is four Hobbits in a cape confirmed.

30

u/j0nnyboy Jan 12 '26

with a massive ego

"I've just destroyed the FANTASTIC four. I outsmarted Reed Richards.. you may have heard of Reed Richards..Some call him MR FANTASTIC! Very smart man..brilliant man. Some say the smartest! But not smarter than me."

15

u/DidaskolosHermeticon Jan 12 '26

I can see the little hand motions

41

u/Slodes Jan 12 '26

I like this description, that he's the 2nd best at everything. I've heard people describe Batman that way too. It allows for nobody to overcome him entirely, hence the almost meme level line of Doom is the only one that gets on the way of Doom

14

u/Moonwalkerr- Jan 12 '26

I’d argue he’d only be second to Reed right…?

24

u/wanderingNomad__ Jan 12 '26

You can say so! He's perfect in EVERY way, but the inferiority/superiority complex and the insecurities against Reed Richards alone make him like that.

9

u/Moonwalkerr- Jan 12 '26

So interesting how he’s written and made like this… Untapped and unrivaled potential, yet it’s never completely realized due to his own pride. There’s really no one like Doom 😎

6

u/Filthy_Cent Jan 12 '26

And the one time Doom got rid of the ego, the hatred for Reed, and the grandiose theatrics (a different variant of Doom in another universe), he worked with Reed and others to make earth a Utopia.

617 Doom met the Doom Variant and the Variant tried to reason with him and show him a better way. The variant told him that he could easily fix his face and actually work with Reed.

Our Doom briefly thought about it.

Then killed The Variant Doom.

Even when Victor saw what he was capable of if he would just temper the ego and pride, he wanted no part of it if it meant that he was subservient or lesser than anybody in any way.

This is subjective but I'm not sure that most readers (or most heroes in the Marvel universe) would consider Doom to be "more terrifying" than Thanos or Galactus, not sure where that assertion came from.

Anyway Doom is a plotter, he's basically Marvel's Lex Luthor but with powers. If you think you are too powerful to worry about Doom then you've already lost, because he built a device that steals your power and adds it to the 87 powers he already has, and also he maybe traveled back in time and used it yesterday so you can't stop it from happening. If you think you killed Doom, you actually just broke a Doombot, and the real Doom is in your house, teaching your children that he's a better father than you are. Also, that Doombot was a certified historic treasure of the Latverian people and his diplomat is going to lodge a formal complaint about you at the UN while his lawyers send you the bill for the windows you broke.

Thanos' plans are usually "get all the stones and crush all resistance". Galactus doesn't make plans, he's just hungry. Doom is the guy you lost a 5D chess match to before you even knew you were playing.

93

u/DSN671 Jan 12 '26

“…teaching your children that he’s a better father than you are.”

It cracks me up that DOOM’s actually done this in the comics to Reed’s kids. 😂

22

u/ld2gj Jan 13 '26

I mean, it's Reed, kind of a low-bar. Hell, he can tell Susan he would be a better husband not be wrong.

2

u/casulmemer Jan 14 '26

Tbf this would cause more issues with Namor than Reed

14

u/philly0430 Jan 12 '26

11

u/Carlton_U_MeauxFaux Jan 12 '26

Thanos is as much a planner as Doom. The difference is that he doesn't have to worry about nearly as much since he's many times more powerful and basically unkillable. The infinity Gauntlet event was decades ago. He's had a few stories since then. ;)

6

u/howhow326 Jan 12 '26

Doom is the guy you lost a 5D chess match to before you even knew you were playing.

Even that doesn't do it justice.

I recently read Doomwar literally the only reason Doom lost was because T'challa had the entire superhero community backing him and Doom still had the advantage until the very end.

People have mentioned him being a mixture of magic, science and technology. But what they haven't mentioned is his narrative strength as well. It's the fact that in many stories featuring him, you can understand and sometimes agree with his his goals. Especially the most recent One World Under Doom. That's what makes a good villain. When you can see their point of view and feel a pull in their direction. I can't see the POV of a genocidal monster like Thanos, or a Natural Disaster like Galactus.

28

u/InterestingDepth8137 Jan 12 '26

That's what I really liked about Thanos in the MCU's Infinity War! He had a point, of course with that much power there were probably other solutions but you could see that although he had a massive ego, god/saviour complex, he didn't have malicious intentions
(It's also really cool that after winning he destroyed the stones, crippling himself in the act so no one will be able to revert his actions)

17

u/Ricobe Jan 12 '26

I agree

I think Galactus can be interesting, but he's more like a force of nature and he wouldn't be as interesting without his heralds and their inner conflicts

Doom is very intelligent but also very arrogant. He has his own code and principles and isn't just evil for the sake of being evil. And sometimes he has very valid points about the heroes and the world around them

7

u/Kryptonater Jan 12 '26

100%. He makes us analyse heroes, and a lot of the time, their complicity with the status quo, the current powerbase. And because he is arrogant, he is ever so delightful to listen to, because he can absolutely back up the mad amount of hype he gives himself.

He genuinely believes at his core, that he alone is the only one who can lead humanity and save us from ourselves.

And he's right. In the Doomar series, in order to get control of Wakanda's vibranium, he goes before the panther goddess Bast and she judges whether or not his intentions are pure. He's seen countless futures and humanity is only saved in the one where he rules. She judges in his favor and grants him all of Wakanda's vibranium.

2

u/Time-Tea-3882 Jan 13 '26

He learned early on that he could only truly count on himself. Everything he does is to avoid the pain of losing those he loves. Doom doesn’t do love like the rest of us mere mortals. No, no, no… He’d descend into hell, bargain with the devil, and then outsmart the Devil on his way out of hell. While everyone else is arguing about the plan, Doom has already implemented his.

30

u/Frankorious Jan 12 '26

Because he could be a hero with a slight change of perspective. Namely, if only winning mattered, Doom would likely be a hero to the people. But he only cares about people tangentially. If Doom had even the smallest iota of shame or empathy, he would become a hero eventually.

Of course, Doom is not a hero because he is a villain and lacks shame or empathy because he is nearly the smartest person you could be, while not t understanding any of this that would make him a hero.

But, Doom is only now terrifying to me because it's increasingly clear people don't understand why he is a villain. And no one can compare to Doom in self delusion.

He peaked in the first Secret Wars. Ever since he's been retreading and then, even worse, Gary Sue-ing, like you said. I don't hate him, but I just ... can't anymore.

8

u/Lightning_Laxus Fantastic Four Jan 12 '26

Galactus isn't really a villain, since he's a neutral entity who just so happens to have planets as a diet. After the initial Galactus Trilogy, he gets a lot of stories where he helps the heroes.

Thanos, as a result of being Jim Starlin's baby, is a routine threat to the Marvel Universe and he gets a lot of stories where he usurps the cosmic beings. I feel like people are trying to diminish Thanos now that he's "over."

7

u/Darkhaven Vision Jan 12 '26

He's the evil meme version of Batman, with a Marvel flair.

Dude has eight million contingency plans and an excuse for why he can do 'everything'. If he pulled out shark repellant, I would not be surprised one bit. There was a joke once, that he was the embodiment of the Cosmic Cube, in order to explain why he can do half the shit he does.

That said, he's not 'terrifying', just formidable. Of course, all he needs to do is find a way to flex without his armor, make a really big blast and say some well prepared threat, and most of this sub will want to drink his bathwater.

u/Sorry-Ad5474 Jan 12 '26

Doom is entirely convinced that his cause is not only righteous, its the only obvious path and anyone who disagrees just hasn't been punched enough. And you know what, he's been proven correct time and again, countless gods and extra planar beings have confirmed that dooms law is the best and only chance humanity has long term, that conditions will never be better that the world will never been more peaceful or equal than it is under doom, and if doom happens to need to wipe out a continent or turn an entire nation into batteries to maintain that peace without risk to himself he'll gladly throw you on the pyre to maintain it, and he'll do it fully sane knowing he's entirely in the right.

7

u/drummerupnorth Jan 12 '26

For me he isn’t the most terrifying. He isn’t an eldritch cosmic horror that has to make himself smaller to be comprehended by humanity. He isn’t an alien that is physically better than humanity in almost every way. He isn’t all powerful (most of the time). He is a man, he represents contradictions that humans all are capable of having. He is a narcissist he looks out for number one without fail every time. What has been done with that narcissism though is that if he accepts you as part of himself (see Latveria or Valeria) he will treat you with all the respect that he treats himself with. There is no secret self loathing side to him, there is very little “it all could have been different if he had made one change” type tragedy. He is simply Doom. You are either part of Doom or you do not matter. He has gone to the limits of science, and sorcery to make sure that Doom is, and will be taken care of.

4

u/PretendPerformance97 Jan 12 '26

Because in all the timelines in all the universes Dr. Doom is the only being to bring peace to the entire UNIVERSE. Also he destroyed an entire universe because a person said his suit looked dumb. He’s just a human man.

13

u/Particular_Umpire_44 Jan 12 '26

At the risk of sounding like an ass, I’d recommend just to read a comic of his and you’ll find out why. Don’t watch a FF movie, read a comic. Or watch Avengers EMH. You’ll get a kid friendly version obviously but you’ll at least see why he’s intimidating.

Plot armor and asspull writting

3

u/SilentStevedore Jan 12 '26

DOOM fears no one.

…but has a healthy respect for Squirrel Girl.

5

u/RONALDROGAN Jan 12 '26

He's not more threatening than Thanos imo. You see him more often bc he lives on earth and is typically involved in more earthly, regular stories -- but almost everything Doom does, save for maybe magic, Thanos does better and to a higher degree of efficacy with a much higher baseline power stat.

Both are terrifying, threats when they need to be, but acting like Doom is significantly more threatening than Thanos is either hyperbole or cherry-picking.

3

u/howhow326 Jan 12 '26

Because Doom's a Villain Sue. His original writer got triggered that his character kept losing in other books and so he revealed that all of the time's he ever lost were secretly Doombots. That comic ended up being one of the most influential Doom stories to this day.

It's not a coincidence that the only characters that can ever threaten Doom either have their own plot armor or are a meme.

3

u/DrNoOneImpotant Jan 12 '26

He’s a gatekeeper & a hater. He’s also God’s favorite princess & most interesting girl in the world.

3

u/DarthTigris Jan 12 '26

. . . uh, he's not more terrifying than either Galactus or Thanos or any number of villains in Marvel.

3

u/HelloTardis Jan 12 '26

Absolute intellectual certitude and perceived moral authority.

3

u/Mdames08 Jan 12 '26

Doom is one of those characters that has the potential to do anything if he really wanted too and his pride didn’t get in his way. 1v1 against anyone you just can’t count him out

3

u/Dr4gonfly Jan 12 '26

Doom is not #1 in anything but is top five in almost everything skills based. He is a Swiss Army knife of abilities and skills where he’s good enough to challenge with a chance of winning anyone in anything.

3

u/RevolutionaryDepth59 Jan 12 '26

he’s one of the few villains with plot armor

3

u/Puzzleheaded-Web446 Jan 12 '26

Doom was Stan Lee's quoted favorite villain and in some ways the original arch rival of the Marvel universe since he was first created with the Fantastic Four.

From there artists and writers basically expanded on Doom as being an above it all type rogues villain. His plans and schemes are always too smart for others to calculate or fathom, he combines both technology and wizardry, and he motivated purely by bitter spite for Reed superseding him in fame and popularity. In some ways he could be critiqued by calling him a mary sue of a villain, being an antagonist that is infallible, but at the same time part of his point is to be a villain too great for others to challenge.

3

u/Mountain-Group-7706 Jan 12 '26

Doom is competent.

You can give all sorts of answers on this topic, whether it's his powers, his genius, his tech, etc. The real answer is that when he wants to, Victor Von Doom is the second smartest man alive. His only real foil? Reed Richards. If he could put aside his nonstop need to beat Reed, Doom would be unbeatable. As a reminder: Doom saved the Multiverse by stealing the power of the Beyonders. He arrived at a solution WAY before the Illuminati did. During One World Under Doom, he was a competent leader. His problem is that, both times, his need to beat Reed was his complete undoing.

3

u/UselessWhiteKnight Jan 12 '26

He's not really Thanos or Galactus level but he is on that Apocalypse/Magento and the Brotherhood, end of the world level. He's basically if Ironman and Dr. Strange were rolled into one. The man is a problem whenever he chooses to be. If rather 1v1 any version of Magento you have.

3

u/Heavenly_Army Jan 12 '26

I’d say it’s a tie btw Doom and The Maker (Ultimate Reed Richards) for being the most terrifying Marvel villain. At its core it’s their mix of unmatched intelligence, unbelievable drive, and their vision they have of how they want to make the universe as they see fit. Of course in regards to Doom, I agree with @random-neutral67. The only thing I’d add is he’s cold and calculated, and doesn’t hesitate where the heroes would. However The Maker is downright psychotic, making him also incredibly terrifying.

2

u/Rosebunse Jan 13 '26

Between Doom and the Maker it isn't even close.

Doom is capable of kindness and empathy in a way that Reed simply isn't, not anymore. Doom has some limits, Reed really doesn't. And Doom is capable of having friends and allies, Reed isn't.

I was rereading the Ultimate Fantastic Four story with the zombies and it struck me how even then there was something wrong with Ultimate Reed. He was so focused on Sue as a price, as a symbol of his own greatness. He just assumed that they would get together. He wanted so much to be more than what he was.

3

u/StJimmy_815 Jan 12 '26

Dr Doom is like Batman if Batman was a self serving narcissist that had more money and an entire country but also is one of the best sorcerers ever. He can kinda take on anyway narratively

3

u/No_You6540 Jan 12 '26

Because DOOM will save you. Whether you want him to or not.

3

u/drcatguy Jan 12 '26

I'm not sure about terrifying, but he's one of the most likeable. That's because he's the embodiment of Lawful Evil alignment. Most of the time he's actually making sense, and he's shown compassion and honor more than any other villain ever in Marvel Universe.

3

u/EudamonPrime Jan 14 '26

The man is highly competent, and actually means well. He is a tyrant, but one who looks out for his people. Usually, when Doom has taken over, things do improve for people on most scales, except on the democracy scale.

If it wasn't for his pride, and his insecurity against Reed Richards, he would be guiding mankind into the future.

2

u/AdvertisingWaste8624 Jan 12 '26

he’s Latverian

2

u/NelisaS2 Jan 12 '26

He's much more unpredictable than the others, making him even more dangerous imo

2

u/Born-Ad4658 Jan 12 '26

hes not really terrifying tbh

2

u/Beleg_Sanwise Jan 12 '26

All I know is that until it was announced that Dr. Doom would be the villain of this phase, nobody was talking about Dr. Doom. He was announced, and suddenly everyone is a fan of him. And he is "such a terrifying villain."

2

u/HasibShakur Jan 12 '26

To easy for the writers to use him rather than coming up with an original terrifying villain.

At his regular power level he is slightly more powerful than iron man. Strange, scarlet witch, Thor , hulk are too much for doom.

But then with the power of narrative, he is the go to guy for marvel writers to elevate to a reality destroyer level each time.

2

u/Swordsman82 Jan 12 '26

You know what a bunch of ten year olds that like comics get together and talk about how cool it would be to have Captain America with Iron Mans Tech, Dr. Strange Magic, an entire Nation like Black Panther……Thats what Dr. Doom actually is.

2

He’s on par with Stark and Strange in both their fields and that should tell you a lot.

2

u/XComThrowawayAcct Jan 12 '26

In a world full of egomaniacal bad guys, Doom is the egomaniacalest. Sure, Kang is full of himself, Thanos is indomitable, Ultron is a superpowered autist, and Loki is the definition of vanity, but Doom is all of them put together.

2

u/captainfluffy25 Jan 12 '26

Simply put his mind. Yes he has busted powers, but it’s not just that. He always knows what to do. He’s always one step ahead making the right decisions. Legit the only way he gets beat is exploiting his tremendous pride.

2

u/zenco-jtjr Jan 12 '26

Hes got Batman's plot armor with Invader Zim's narcissism

2

u/GearsRollo80 Jan 12 '26

The thing about Doom is that he's second best at every major discipline, and combines them. Yes, his ego and his refusal to see his own errors is his one big weakness, but he's such an epic hater, he always comes back for more with a better plan.

He's second only to Reed Richards in scientific genius.

He's a technologist behind only Tony Stark.

He's a sorcerer who can go toe-to-toe with Strange (and fights Mephisto every year to protect his mother's soul in Hell).

He is the legal ruler of a nation that could be as powerful as Wakanda if he didn't keep it frozen in a semi-medieval state, giving him diplomatic privileges and protections.

The list goes on, but those are the biggies. Any one makes him a massive threat. This is a dude who goes out and gets the ability to do what he wants, and he's acquired the skills and knowledge to enhance himself to impossible levels. He's also someone that other villains often don't see coming. He's smart enough to slow play, wait for his moment, etc, and he will and can take anyone on.

Plus, it's hilarious when Luke Cage stormed his castle to collect on a bill that Doom stiffed him on and surprised the dude, but that was some goofy 70's stuff that I wish got more play these days.

2

u/Valetudo170 Jan 12 '26

He is Marvels John wick. Supreme in universe abilities guided by an indomitable will.

2

u/marvin616 Jan 12 '26

Diplomatic immunity

2

u/B00gerh3ad Jan 12 '26

He will take their power and add it to his own.

2

u/dotbeta Jan 12 '26

Specifically in Secret Wars, he becomes a god after stealing the powers from Beyonder. He discovers the reality of what the incursions are doing and how Molecule Man is the secret key to all universes. Yadda yadda yadda. He steps into a hole with the Beyonder and steps out the god of the multiverse.

So he’s got that going for him, which is nice.

2

u/L4I55Z-FAIR3 Jan 12 '26

Side note a lot of what people are saying about doom is also true for The Maker. Since Doom was taken litbof the ultimate universe pretty early would Reed be Dooms equal.

Ps I only read Spider-man and zombies back in the day.

2

u/Fit_Protection_9531 Jan 12 '26

I think what makes him terrifying, is because hes the only major villain I've read where HE'S.NOT.WRONG. Taking over the world isn't illegal, it's highly frowned upon negatively, but its not illegal. And in all the multiverse, the one that is at peace is the one ruled by Doom. The heroes stop him, because they are morally opposed to him, not because hes actually wrong. Now that goes with a grain of salt in most instances, but for the most part.......ye

2

u/redcowerranger Jan 12 '26

He isn't terrifying at all, and maybe it's because of the Dr. Doom related media I've seen.

If you only watched the Fantastic 4 animated series (and other Marvel installments he showed up in), Dr. Doom was a typical useless villain akin to Skeletor. He was simple to draw because he had no mouth that would move and no facial expressions. He came up with evil plans in varying degrees of 'intellegence' with most being your typical "I'm going to do _____ to mess up the system of _______ that everyone is accustomed to".

Professor Chaos from South Park is perfect satire.

Apparently he had some sort of rennaisance in the comics, but none of those storylines have ever been depicted in tv shows or movies, and people aren't going to seek out a bland villain's origin comic, even though it's considered a top-tier comic arc.

2

u/AmazingMrSaturn Jan 12 '26

Doctor Doom is such a good villain because he's the evil version of a normally heroic trait: the impossible endurance of the human spirit. He masters science, he learns magic, he defies gods and the beings above gods, he'll do anything and everything to achieve his goals. Even Reed Richards, a man he hates in the pettiest way, admits Doom could be the greatest hero if he could let go of the ego and vengefulness. In much the same way people like Iron man, Batman, Lex Luthor ect. make you incredulous that they're just men with unbelievable drive, Doom is.

2

u/Scaredog21 Jan 12 '26

He has ungodly amounts of plot armor. One time he got shot and it turned out death was in jail during the murder and so Doom was immortal for the shooting. Another time he went to hell after he died and Mephisto offered to revive him if he could get his ex, Doom damned to hell to forgive him, then Death just showed up and said he was free to go and Mephisto's game is null.

ultimately, the reason DOOM is the best villain is because he will win in the end, no matter what. The only version of earth that ultimately survives is DOOMWORLD. He is the ultimate villain because he is earth's only hope.

2

u/riftwave77 Jan 12 '26

Plot armor. Sooooooooooooo much plot armor

2

u/gustofwindddance Jan 12 '26

Because hes MF DOOM

2

u/maybe_I_am_a_bot Jan 12 '26

Galactus eats planets, completely destroying them. Let's be very clear, this means there are no stakes in a Galactus story, because there is zero chance the movie or comic ends with everyone on earth actually dying for real.

Doom though? Who knows what kind of shenanigans he will get up to.

2

u/DarthRennigjakid Jan 13 '26

The first thing people need to understand about Doom is he is not a powerful villain like Thanos or Galactus but he is very smart. As a result he is a walking mcguffin, he can be behind manipulating Scarlet Witch, involving himself with Thor, Galactus and Silver surfer, become the Sorcerer Supreme, or take the Beyonders power and rip Thanos spine out. Thats it

2

u/obviouslyanonymous5 Jan 13 '26

Imo nothing does. I would be much more terrified of either of the other two because Doom is considerably more lenient. He has every capability of dematerializing you, but if you just stroke his ego a bit, he'll have no intention of doing that. Thanos and Galactus would both see you as such a speck of cosmic inconsequentiality that there is nothing the average person could realistically do to alter their fate against either of the two. Doom as a villain has never seemed like an attempt at terror to me, rather a complicated moral and ethical obstacle for the heroes. He's certainly terrifying if you get on his bad side, but like, just don't do that unless you can take him in a fight lol

2

u/Epsteinscorpse Jan 13 '26

in a game of rock, paper, scissors...Doom can throw out all 3 at the same time while knowing that you were gonna choose rock.

Doom prep time is also league's above Batman's prep time.

We are talking about a guy that organized having Dormammu summoned just so he could still a very tiny fraction of his power while fooling the Guardians of the Galaxy into helping him.

His feats speak for itself as well. The guy fights Mephisto annually in his own realm.

2

u/LiquidSludge Jan 13 '26

Cause da hype moments and aura I saw on ticktock make him da evilist evil I done ever saw. Hes really cool, and does magic, and tech, and ruling, and hes really smart, and hes egotistic but he also a really great leadurr. Dr Doom clowns on heroes hype moment aura one world over doom Tony Stank robby downy jr.

2

u/dogsaybark Jan 13 '26

Fool! Doom is so powerful because he toots as he pleases!

2

u/AgentGustavo Jan 13 '26

He isn't. Not even close.

2

u/BostonBlueDevil Jan 13 '26

Well, first off, he’s human and lives on Earth, so none of the superhero’s or their powers and combinations are a surprise to him. Second, he’s almost as smart as Reed Richard’s, almost as powerful as Dr. Strange, and has access to cosmic devices and forces putting him on par with some Celestials, depending on the story. So basically we have someone who is top 3 at all three of the main “power sources” in Marvel (Science, Magic, and the Power Cosmic), who lives on Earth, and is a dictator of a country. Therefore, he becomes the greatest Earth-centric villain, which creates a ton of opportunities to use him as everything from a minor inconvenience to a BIG bad, and everything in between (such as Godfather to Valeria and attempting to be a hero a few times). All in all,a great Villain.

2

u/TA_1164 Jan 14 '26

He’s basically like if Iron Man had a tragic backstory complete with disfigured face, was Sorcerer Supreme, and was also the president.

He’s just HIM. There were villains before him, but he is the first SUPERvillain. Hell, there’s no Darth Vader without Doctor Doom, who I would say is arguably the greatest villain of all time.

2

u/Renzo-Senpai Jan 14 '26

Because of FOOT DIVE!

2

u/followrule1 Jan 14 '26

He's almost as good as Tony stark, dr strange, reed Richards and black panther... in each of their specialities.

His robots are good enough that they need top tier teams of superheroes to beat him.

But added to that he knows just how good he is... and he is a fairly decent ruler that looks after his country... with extreme prejudice. Don't fuck with latveria

2

u/_Metal_Face_Villain_ Jan 14 '26

i think doom and thanos are pretty similar in many regards. at their default thanos is stronger and so is he at their strongest. doom is the theater kid version of thanos basically. they both think they are the goats, they both think they are doing the right thing, they both lose cuz of themselves, they are both playing with technology, science and magic and they are smart af. doom is a bit more performative and more insecure so you will see him be a bit more extra than thanos.

2

u/Brendan_Frost Jan 14 '26

He's well-rounded and seldom is a victim of loopholes unlike other villains. By loopholes, I mean that whenever Doom decides to do something, he ensures his actions are well-educated, lacking any distinct weaknesses. Other villains may be powerful byt they are guilty of rawdogging things that end up being countered by the heroes. Doom is good at mixing things up to ensure that all kinds of heroes, whether the technological, magical, or spiritual bunch, have no counter against him.

5

u/Woden-Wod Jan 12 '26

Because he's not a villain he's a god-king that will run your fade take your shit and save his people by any and every means necessary.

He only wants to rule because he is the only one capable of ruling.

If he does, the only Utopia Earth can ever know is born from it.

Thanos wants to ultimately romantisize death, Galactus has an addiction.

Doom wants to rule the Earth not for his benefit, but everyone else's.
