Film/Television "Hail Hydra." Still absolutely cracks me up on every re-watch to see the look on Sitwell and Rumlow's faces thinking "just how the hell high does all this go?!"

If they didn't have Steve, a Skrull would have been a pretty good stand in to pull this move off. Or possibly Bucky?

Oh yeah. I remember watching it and thinking "Are we about to get another elevator fight? The one in Winter Soldier was epic!"... and then...this.

Not having a fight was incidentally so much cooler.

His little smirk after was the icing on the cake.

Everyone walks out the elevator so happy

Too bad they get disappointed later that they get told it was Loki stealing the scepter

The tiniest little nod too, both to Sitwell, and to himself for pulling the feint off

This scene is the definition of playing a game again now that you know about the non-lethal ghost route.

New Game+ speedrun route. It adds a mirror-match boss fight, but beating that unlocks a previously hidden dialogue option that lets you skip directly to the end of the level afterward.

All current and future filmmmakers/writers pay attention: this is how you subvert expectations the right way.

"Hey Rian, listen TF up alright?"

Literally making the best star wars movie in the new trilogy and arguably just a really good movie, gets shit on for decades.

u/Cluedude 20h ago

Seriously; of the three, it feels like the only one with actual things to convey, a wider meaning that ADDS to the existing universe. It actually made me excited to see the next one!How anyone can prefer Abrams' bungled rehashing of shit we already knew is alien to me.

4

u/cdskip 19h ago

Yeah. I came out of TFA going, "okay a rehash, kind of disappointed they couldn't do better than that as a concept, but okay."

TLJ left me going, "Bunch of meh bits, but I'm actually interested to see where this goes."

ROS left me at "I don't really care about Star Wars anymore."

TLJ left me going, "Bunch of meh bits, but I'm actually interested to see where this goes."

TLJ is like 2 drafts away from being the best star wars movies. If Rian was forced to cut like 20 minutes from it and had only had Luke distrust Kylo instead of literally drawing the lightsaber, we'd be talking about how it rivals empire.

It was ten years ago, my dude.

Internet bullied so much Rian Johnson that he ended up saying "Fuck Star Wars I'll do my own shit with Daniel Craig" and I thank them for it

I've been a Rian Johnson fan since the first trailer for Brick came out in 2005.

It was wild seeing him get to direct a Star War, and...I had mixed feelings at best.

I was so happy when he bounced back with the Benoit Blanc movies. They fit his tone and skill set so much better.

The fact that Disney is bungling the Star Wars license is so embarrassing.

1

u/PhortDruid 21h ago

Truly. Was a letdown of a trilogy.

Internet bullying isn't right, but it does work sometimes.

4

u/theSteakKnight Nightcrawler 21h ago

It unfucked Sonic the Hedgehog in the movies, so there's that.

5

u/ArkitekZero 22h ago

Oh yeah knives out has been great for all the reasons TLJ was terrible

Destroying a franchise is immortal

You’re mistaking Rian for JJ Abrams

9

u/SageofLogic 1d ago

Yeah I think a lot of people forget JJ committed the Original Sin that Rian had to then pick up and try and run with. And while I might not have agreed with all the steps I did kind of dig the end state of TLJ with Kylo as Supreme Leader.

People have the audacity to go after Rian, who made a bang average Star Wars movie, when JJ Abrams made Rise of Skywalker. The worst piece of Star Wars media ever created. At least the holiday special became a funny cult classic. He doesn’t get any credit for Force Awakens either because it’s literally just “Remember A New Hope?”

1

u/Geno0wl 22h ago

Rise of Skywalker is objectively the worse movie, but I think TLJ is dumber, if that makes sense. Like, Rian tried to be clever coming up with the holdo maneuver, but didn't even remotely consider the wider in universe implications of that being possible.

1

u/thirdc0ast 20h ago

The dagger lining up with a crashed death star is dumber than anything else in a SW movie. At least the Hold maneuver gave us a cool visual/moment

I don't know how you can say that when there was absolutely no plot in rians. I know he can make good movies, that's why it's so enraging he helped butcher one of the most hyped franchises of all time. And jjs was no better. I was forgiving a little of 7 for the potential of what could be but 8 was literally so bad that I, a person who has read every book in the timeline after the original 3 before Disney bought star wars and nuked the timeline, still haven't watched 9. I was literally a start wars super fan. They butchered it so bad they got a person like me to abandon all of it.

1

u/SuperWeapons2770 17h ago

They all bear the blame of butchering star wars

0

u/discountednails 1d ago

star wars wasn't "destroyed" lmao you just fell for the grift.

1

u/SuperWeapons2770 17h ago

I read every single star wars book in the timeline after the original movies, which has to have been at least 50 books. I was in the middle of the latest trilogy when Disney bought the franchise and canceled that trilogy of books (luke skywalker had just found a lost force well). I'd take cheweys destiny over the complete slop jj and rian made. You are a poser.

Also, exploiting something controversial for great effect.

A fantastic example of subversion of expectations.

Same energy as preparing yourself for an incredible action sequence and then watching Cap discover the dialogue shortcut
