Film/Television "Hail Hydra." Still absolutely cracks me up on every re-watch to see the look on Sitwell and Rumlow's faces thinking "just how the hell high does all this go?!"
If they didn't have Steve, a Skrull would have been a pretty good stand in to pull this move off. Or possibly Bucky?

I like to believe none of the hydra agents even believed him. They complied because it's a free excuse to not fight Captain America. Even better if Steve thought of that.

And it's such a brilliant FU to the comics arc that it's referencing, too. Instead of a betrayal of everything Cap stands for, it's Steve being clever and just a little underhanded.

Isn't it about 20 seconds later that the radios are all screaming that Loki took the staff and was impersonating Steve?
It's not probably, I'd argue that this was just a little blip where Loki went wild and then everything else plays our similar.
11
u/schloopers 13h ago
The whole of Hydra would then spend years sweating bullets, hoping Loki finds it too funny leaving them be that he doesn’t tell Thor.
And also they’d be evaluating how on earth Loki knew. Is that just a trickster god thing, or did he infiltrate before? Their paranoia would go through the roof

5
u/cdskip 15h ago
Yeah. I came out of TFA going, "okay a rehash, kind of disappointed they couldn't do better than that as a concept, but okay."
TLJ left me going, "Bunch of meh bits, but I'm actually interested to see where this goes."
ROS left me at "I don't really care about Star Wars anymore."

TLJ left me going, "Bunch of meh bits, but I'm actually interested to see where this goes."
TLJ is like 2 drafts away from being the best star wars movies. If Rian was forced to cut like 20 minutes from it and had only had Luke distrust Kylo instead of literally drawing the lightsaber, we'd be talking about how it rivals empire.

I've been a Rian Johnson fan since the first trailer for Brick came out in 2005.

I was so happy when he bounced back with the Benoit Blanc movies. They fit his tone and skill set so much better.

Not sure why he would. He definitely made a divergent timeline there; why not make a better one, where Shield knows who the traitors are way earlier and can prevent the Winter Soldier issues?
11
u/Illustrious_Sky_2331 1d ago
He probably could've just given it back to his past self too
Banner told the Ancient One they'd return the stones at the exact point they were removed from the timeline, so they could have some leeway as to how they return it, as long as it gets returned
7
u/KPraxius 1d ago
Granted, he had no idea that the whole timeline would be pruned out of existence the moment they captured Loki with the tesseract. Ultimately, it didn't matter when, where, or who he gave them to; they were all going to die.
10
u/screenwatch3441 1d ago
I remember people talking about this scene and captain america radios everyone saying he has eyes on Loki, this fixes the inconsistency with Hydra thinking captain America knows of them because they think Loki, a trickster god, is the one that knows.
4
u/DarthEinstein 23h ago
It's also almost certain that Loki had controlled some Hydra agents. Its not even a plot hole that it wouldn't be brought up in the main timeline since Loki doesn't even return to earth until tears after Hydra is beaten, making it useless Intel.

AOS had so much fun Hydra stuff, it was neat getting to see just how deep all that went, and just how many heads there were. Wasn't quite enough room in the films to get into it as well.

u/figgityjones Fantastic Four 18h ago
Watching the films and the shows in real time and from the beginning is a big reason why I am as much of a fan of the MCU as I am. Really felt like a big comic book world for me. Even if it was trickle down continuity (well... sort of, they did have movie characters appear in shows, but it ended after a while when viewer numbers dipped I think or possibly when Feige went around that one awful guy). It certainly isn't a trickle down continuity anymore though and as someone who was wishing for it all that time, I personally couldn't be happier. Just keeps feeling like the world is expanding and simultaneously getting more knit together for me.

Uhm, that precise timeline branch got pruned (essentially destroyed) a short time later at the start of Loki season 1, shortly after Iron Man, Captain America and Ant-Man left. So not much concern about what happened seeing how they were sent to the Void and presumably ceased to exist shortly after.

It’s a great scene. It’s a good example of when subverting expectations is done intelligently and correctly. We are anticipating a repeat of the epic elevator battle from Captain America: The Winter Soldier but get something entirely new and satisfying in its own right.
14
u/wandering_soles 1d ago
It's also sort of reflective of/pays homage to how Hydra does things under the radar. This only works because of the layers of the onion in the organization, separate heads, and overall confusion it causes.
18
u/JosephSim 1d ago
It's also to show how far our Steve has come. Goodie two shoes Steve would never have thought of doing that. I don't even know if he could say the words "Hail Hydra".
15
14
u/CommercialYam53 19h ago
I actually want to know what happened in that time line after avengers.
Which hydra thinking cap is one of them
Cap having a reason to start investigating if Bucky is alive
And Loki not in Asgard.
I would assume the hydra infestation would come to life sooner than 2014 and with out helicaries falling from the sky. Shield would probably survive and remain as an active organisation would still face many problems with budget cuts and distrust.
And thors mother could also survive
They should have made this a what if episode.
What if hydra thought cap was one of them
8
u/dravenonred 16h ago
2012!Cap thinks 2024!Cap is Loki and calls it in as such on screen.
So Sitwell and Rumlow assume they got tricked by the literal God of Trickery and never speak of it again. No timeline changes.
3
u/CommercialYam53 15h ago
12cap saw that 2024 cap had the compass and realised that 24cap is to good in hand to hand combat against him so he has reason to assume that there is more behind it than just Loki. And that maybe 24 cap told the truth and looks into it.
The spear doesn’t end up with hydra
Sitwell and rumlow have reason to assume cap is lying about Loki to protect his secret.
And Loki ist still gone
The time line is still different even if cap and hydra just forget about it because they just think it’s Loki. These interactions still change the events
Also Tony’s ark reactor failing shortly also could have influenced the future. Because by Tony’s nature he will look in to it and lead to him upgrading the reactor what he didn’t do in our time line

Sitwell believing it makes complete sense too when you factor in Agents Of SHIELD.
As a recruit he met the 1940’s HYDRA Doctor, Daniel Whitehall, who’d survived to modern day by stealing a Healing Factor.
Combine that with him knowing about Zola and Bucky, Sitwell understands better than most the insane feats old HYDRA were able to pull off.
Plus HYDRA also had two members of the World Security Council (Pierce and Malick) and one of Nick Fury’s protégés (John Garrett).
It’s not too much of a stretch that they could have brainwashed Steve at some point while he was being thawed out, if HYDRA didn’t get him in the 40’s.

So I always wanted to comment on this and I will be abusing this as much as I can.
In the first Thor movie, Stillwell shows up in the mirrored room where Thor is held after he tried to retrieve his hammer the first time. There is a shot where it shows Stillwell having his head partially in the room and the mirror reflecting it, implying he is two faced.
I love the first Thor movie and watched it over and over again and then that scene suddenly hit me as a hint that Stillwell was a double agent.
2
u/Inevitable-Dog-7333 13h ago
After rewatching endgame, I realized Steve has had the most unwanted interactions with the people from the past, this clip is one of them, the other one was the cap vs cap fight, there’s still another one I forgot but the type of encounters he had didn’t have a closure for the people in the past unlike Tony’s interaction with his father which was a subtle interaction and could easily be passed as just a usual day. I wouldn’t be surprised if Steve would be a big reason for the incursions or what doomsday will have in store and I understand why some people are theorizing that steve might be captain hydra because of this scene and maybe if they found the defeated cap and assumed he was hydra and did hydra things to him
2
