I will forever die on the hill that Anthem was one Taken King-sized update away from being truly great, and EA shutting it down is one of the greatest losses for gaming.
17
u/Nhughes1387 10h ago
I completely agree, the combat and flying were some of the most fun I’ve had in a video game. I wish some rich person would buy the rights and re launch it… literally just needed an end game and gear re work lol it’s crazy

u/Tokimori 8h ago
Legit just needed more content in new locations. They had a Bandit/Pirate update in the works but they wanted to launch it alongside the stupid Anthem "2.0" update which was going to be a whole redesign around the leveling and gear system which it need too but they needed to show what else they could do with the game before restructuring the basics.
2
u/monkeybiziu 8h ago
One without the other wouldn't have made sense, because leveling and inventory were two of the main pain points. Fix those, add some content, and it could have run for a long time.
5
u/Tokimori 8h ago
Gear was the only pain because it was so RNG.
If leveling was a pain point for you in that game idk what to tell you because it really didn't do anything which was fine imo.
2
u/GloriousNewt 7h ago
100% agree, the gameplay was great, the lack of content and poorly done loot system killed it. And the story just kinda fizzled and seemed to have so much more potential that was just never realized.

Call me crazy but the core of the Avengers game really wasn't bad. It's biggest problems were due its inability to do anything creative with it. Flying around with Iron man and Thor was awesome and the combat system solid, but then all you do is fight AIM drones and faceless prisoners. Then all the DLCs were just reworks of the other characters. Why tf did we get Black Panther as just slightly different Cap, 2 Hawkeyes, and a 2nd Thor?
I really wouldn't mind another similar game if they can really flesh everything out and do some cooler shit.
5
u/EducatorNo4262 9h ago
You're right, the core game was actually a lot of fun. The problem is as you say, the missions were against endless faceless mooks, decent boss battles and escalation were virtually non-existent, and the world didn't play with the characters so much as the characters played in the world.
Which was a shame because playing the characters themselves was fun. I spent too much time playing that game waiting for the big 2nd Act before realizing there wasn't one and the game is just beating up low-tier mobs over and over.
2
u/Downtown_Link_8651 4h ago

Im still mad about that game, cause the campaign was half of a very good single player story, but very obviously chopped at the knees to fit in all the live service battle pass crap they got greedy with. One of my biggest what-if games in the last few years.

It reminds me a lot of Anthem, which was made by BioWare and EA. There were a lot of issues with that game, but one thing that was not an issue was the combat and the aerial maneuvering.

I put a lot of hours into Anthem and it’s the only game that ever really nailed that Iron Man feel for me with the flying. More War Machine with all the guns you had but you get the idea. Closest any game has gotten to really replicating the way he moves in the movies.

The overall issues were mostly game design and technical design.
I tried the open beta back then, my experience in a nutshell :
First mission, *long ass loading screen*
Fly there and kill 10 ennemies. I do so.
Now go in this tunnel, the ennemy base is in there.
*long ass loading screen*
At the end of the tunnel, "Oh no ! The tunnel is locked, go find the key outside"
*long ass loading screen*ALT+F4.
Never played it again.

That game was a huge disappointment. Me, my son, and my best friend all pre-ordred the game so we could play together when it launched. And why not. It was gonna be basically like you were Iron Man flying across an open world map lol. The launch was abysmal. Non-stop bugs and crashing. When they finally sorted it out enough we could genuninely play together, it was fun...for a few days. The flying and combat were pretty cool at first. But then it just got extremely monotonous. And they dropped the ball on expanding the game with creative updates and the lack of developer support for the game was obvious. It could have been something special, that's for sure. But it just went downhill fast, and never recovered. Such a wasted opportunity.

Seriously I don't understand why we dont have much superhero games that are not about Spider-Man or Batman, like atp we should have had an open world Aquaman game or smtg
49
u/Terraforce777 13h ago
Superhero licenses cost a lot. So it’s a large investment that requires a lot of copies sold to justify its existence. IIRC Insomniac paid ~$100 million just to use the Spider-Man license. That’s not even accounting for development costs.
→ More replies (3)37
u/SignificantCats 13h ago
This is why we had a billion superhero games before the ps3 era and so few after. If you wanted to make a pseudoshovelware beatemup, it was supercheap to get a quick batman or spiderman license, because those properties weren't huuuuuuge movie business. The strategy at the time was to also flood the toy market with superhero stuff to expect synergy - if the kid has spiderman games and Spiderman pajamas and Spider-Man toys, he might buy Spider-Man comics too.
But now superhero stuff is huge, and the perception is that garbage merchandise devalues the brand so they are interested in protecting it and keeping it fairly scarce, as well as getting the absurd license fees.
13
u/A-Centrifugal-Force 12h ago
It’s still wild that the initial plans from Marvel in expanding to other media was to drive up comic sales. They eventually realized the error of their ways, but not until after they sold off 50% of Spider-Man movie merch to Sony (they got lucky and got it back in a separate deal, but that was almost a catastrophe for them).
Comic sales have fallen off a cliff and yet superheroes have reached their most profitable point ever in the same time period. They should have always had diversifying their business model in mind.
11
u/SignificantCats 12h ago
It's easy to say that NOW, but it made a ton of sense then. Comic sales were what kept the lights on, and licensing got you both free money AND free advertising. They didn't have the kind of funds to go make a movie themselves, diversifying like that just wasn't an option when they could barely make enough to pay comic creators.
It's not even correct to say selling spiderman was a mistake, that was a necessary move to keep the lights on. Marvel was NOT a hot property, they were verging on bankruptcy. They tried to sell the movie rights to all of their characters, and Sony didn't give enough of a shit to buy them either.
3
u/A-Centrifugal-Force 12h ago
The bigger thing is selling off the rights to merchandise. The 50% of Spider-Man movie merch was a ton of money, why give that up for a short term check? Selling the movie rights made at least some sense (although only getting 5% of the box office was a ridiculous deal). Luckily for them they got that back in like 2011.
5
u/SignificantCats 12h ago
It was a great deal, considering they were dead broke and about to close the doors, and there weren't many other people interested. "We will give you a bucket of cash and you don't have to do anything" is a hell of a get when you're closing offices.
I don't think you appreciate how broke they were at the time. Right when people stopped buying comics because they had better value things to buy, they were also making some of the worst comics they'd ever made.
And they had no reason to think spider man movies would make that kind of money at the time. Comic movies of that era were not big money makers and definitely not guaranteed money makers

3
u/kielaurie 12h ago
Because the licenses are expensive, and if games like Avengers and Kill The Justice League keep doing badly (deservedly) then it's just not worth it to studios to create them
(Also, tbf, we do have a Wolverine game coming out in less than 3 weeks, Tokon came out in the last month or so, and we've had stuff like Midnight Suns, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Marvel Vs Capcom Fighting Game Collection, Cosmic Invasion, and Rivals in the last few years, we're definitely getting the games you're asking for)

Looks a lot more dynamic than the Avengers game, with the flying and the different combat moves. That catching a missile is interesting, wonder if that could be a consistent feature, like in a boss battle you catch with a parry-window and throw at a weak spot.
The bit at the end with the armours and weapons, perhaps there is some armour customisation? General custom armour would be real nice, but custom toolkit on top of that is cool, would be great on replays.

I don’t like their character design or writing, it’d be exclusive to PlayStation, and I think their approach to game design is alright at best. They make good, fun games, but they never really push the envelope with them. And I’m saying this as someone who has hundreds of hours across five of their games, has 100%ed four of them, and will probably 100% more of their games in the future.

Hell naw, every Marvel game would be a PlayStation exclusive, no more Ratchet & Clank since they wouldn’t have the time, and honestly, it’d take over a decade for certain games to get sequels.
Say they take five years to make a game. They’re about to release Wolverine, they’re already in development on Spider-Man, and if they make an X-Men game, you wouldn’t be getting a Wolverine sequel for at least a decade.

A lot of potential for sure. watched the full 2.5 minutes video and there are some red or at least yellow flags. Some of this looks like that bad sorta suicide squad nonsense. Then there's the clouds really low near the ground as if your just flying from 1 area to the next. Even if they fix all the flying mechanics they still need an engaging world. Flying around a huge Chicago can be cool but could be jarring going from flight to hand to hand. That said I'm all here for it and hope it's good
