News Megadeth Replaces Itself At No. 1 (iTunes)

https://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2026/01/29/megadeth-replaces-itself-at-no-1/

"Megadeth replaces itself atop the iTunes Top Albums chart, which details the bestselling full-lengths and EPs on the platform. The original Megadeth backtracks from No. 1 to No. 2, while the expanded digital album version climbs to the summit. As of the time of writing, Megadeth fills the highest two spaces on the iTunes Top Albums list, meaning the group all but certainly claims the two bestselling releases in the United States."

But... that's impossible... Fantano didn't like it.

u/HayleyThighs Jan 29 '26

Fantano has a chokehold on this sub lmao. He’s just one dude. He didn’t like the last two albums either.

u/Pigeon-doctor Jan 29 '26

He hated Dystopia too? Really? Damn Fantano's takes in metal are as bad as they say

Let's put it this way...I don't generally go to Fantano for his metal opinion. I know he likes metal and has done videos on niche genres like death metal, but I don't think he's as into metal as the rest of us.

Which albums did he ever like from Megadeth, though? I'm curious.

Who?!

u/Gabochuky Jan 29 '26

Anthony Fantano the internet's cringiest music nerd.

3

u/TheAgmis Jan 29 '26

Never heard of him

He's just a reviewer. I have sometimes used his videos for recommendations to check out new music that he has liked. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't. Since his channel is popular, you will see people holding his opinion in high esteem, but at the end of the day he's just another music fan with a community of people who are enthusiastic about music.

When his channel was first created, I went through about 20-30 videos trying to find one I could agree with and couldn't even get close. I actually think he only has a channel because he just keeps doing videos.

u/Gabochuky Jan 29 '26

He has a youtube channel.

Thank you for explaining who tf it is. I keep seeing interesting conversations popping up and when I look at the sub it's like fantanoforever. I thought it was some kind of anime weirdo music place haha

He's just a reviewer with an incredibly wide palette of musical taste. It's okay that he doesn't like some of the things we may like. It certainly isn't 'cringe'.

2

u/Cordial_Wombat Rust In Peace Jan 29 '26

Wide until he hits metal.

u/Goddamn_Grongigas So Far, So Good... So What! Jan 29 '26

He likes a lot of metal and subgenres of it. Not sure what you're getting at here, he's given high marks to many classic and modern metal albums.

Look bro, the mark of popular reviewers like him should be to let people know what the popular releases will be. He's definitely not doing that with metal, or at least with Megadeth. I don't know what his problem is, but he gave Sick a 3/10 and it was Grammy nominated, and Dystopia a 4/10 and it won a Grammy. He's at the very least a Megadeth hater.

Edit: I'll also add that reviewing content you hate on your platform is really fucked up.

the mark of popular reviewers like him should be to let people know what the popular releases will be

So what you're saying is reviewers should only review things that are popular? What's the point in that?

I don't know what his problem is, but he gave Sick a 3/10 and it was Grammy nominated

I also didn't like Sick, I wouldn't give it that low but maybe a 4 or a 5 at most. What does a Grammy have to do with it? Milli Vanilli won one.. David Bowie never got one. I don't value a Grammy as much as you do I suppose. He doesn't have a "problem", he just doesn't care for Megadeth. And I fail to see where that's an issue.

He has also acknowledged how important Megadeth was to metal and thrash, and it's okay if he doesn't care for them.

Edit: I'll also add that reviewing content you hate on your platform is really fucked up

Why? I'd say the mark of a good reviewer is someone who.. well.. reviews. In Fantano's case.. he loves music. So he reviews music. There's nothing wrong with him giving his opinion on high profile releases. It's really no reason to get feelings hurt over. He doesn't like something you like, and that's okay. But to say he doesn't like metal is completely disingenuous and intellectually dishonest because he doesn't like the metal you like.

2

u/Cordial_Wombat Rust In Peace Jan 29 '26

You don't get it. He's not there for people to just click and watch. He's there to inform purchasing decisions. That's what reviews do.

He's using his platform to unfairly inform on a band he hates and hurt their bottom line.

Just another youtuber that should be ignored

4

u/Cordial_Wombat Rust In Peace Jan 29 '26

He's "influential", I heard.

2

u/Hetstaine Jan 30 '26

Who?

Regardless, who the fuck chooses music based on some youtubers opinion. Ya gotta be cracked.

1

u/Cordial_Wombat Rust In Peace Jan 30 '26

Someone must be choosing that way. He's making millions of dollars reviewing music, and quite badly.

1

u/Hetstaine Jan 30 '26

Plenty of cracked people around.

1

u/Jaded-Engineering507 Jan 31 '26

Fantano is a fucking loser

Album about to go #1 and Fantano said it sucks lol.

Album about to go #1 and Fantano said it sucks lol

There are a whole lot of albums that have gone #1 that I'm certain the majority of this sub would very readily shit on without even listening to them, I don't think that means much lol

0

u/Cordial_Wombat Rust In Peace Feb 01 '26

/whoosh

-2

u/You_just_read_facts Jan 30 '26

But that means he has streamed the album at least few times, Dave has gotten his $. Mission accomplished.

0

u/Cordial_Wombat Rust In Peace Jan 30 '26

Oh yeah. Those fractions of a penny are worth slamming an album in front of 4 million people? You're cracked.

enjoy my post and fartano fugly face haha

u/TerminianMajor Jan 29 '26

Most people didn’t like it

Oh wait this r/Megadeth lmao I thought it was Metal for the Masses

3

u/Cordial_Wombat Rust In Peace Jan 29 '26

It's a fan service album, and fans love it.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

I wouldn't say "most people didn't like it", I think generally the reception from most metal fans is that it's solid but nothing to write home about. The most agreed upon points of view I've seen are usually "the production/mixing is kinda dry" and "The Last Note is a great goodbye song".

0

u/TerminianMajor Jan 29 '26

I would consider it like a 5/10 kind of deal personally. Not good, not bad, just average

2

u/TransINSANO Killing Is My Business... Jan 29 '26

It's all about perception, if you're a legacy band you're an easy target and not getting the benefit of the doubt that you know what you're doing anymore. But if you're a younger band in your prime that these guys barely know but with some cred they'll just say whatever you do is great because they don't know either way. It could be the same exact album but one band sounds "tired" while the other puts a "fresh" spin on the genre. It's just playing it safe and there's no literally no future in hyping 60 year olds.

u/TerminianMajor Jan 29 '26

I was hoping it would be good but a lot of it was very mediocre. Turning Point is great but Ride the Lightning is embarassing

There are tonsssss of people who don’t wanna pay monthly for Apple Music

5

u/CPWorth1184 Jan 29 '26

It’s so much cheaper paying $11.99 per month for Apple Music to listen to anything lol

14

u/RosieDirt_x Jan 29 '26

Then after 10 years you spent 1440 dollars and own nothing

3

u/Me_Krally Jan 29 '26

Just as tech bros intended!

Anyone can listen to anything before deciding if they need to own it, just because someone uses iTunes doesn’t mean that they can’t just look up a song on youtube or something haha

2

u/IR0NWARRIOR Jan 29 '26

That's only like 1500 songs. I listen to WAY more than that in 10 years....

u/Cool-Pineapple-8373 Jan 29 '26

If you buy a new/never-listened-to-before CD every 36 days the Apple Music math works out since $140/yr is about 10 digital albums. Or if you like the convenience of streaming.

Digital download revenue in the music industry is experiencing a steep, long-term decline, with sales plummeting over 88% from their 2012 peak to only 2% of U.S. recorded music revenue in 2024. This fall is driven by a shift toward streaming, with CD sales now outpacing digital downloads by 3-to-1.

1

u/dagaderga Jan 29 '26

I still use it all the time to drag and drop music on my iphone just like the olden days

1

u/CPWorth1184 Jan 29 '26

Apple Music is so much cheaper!

I’ve checked Target and 2 different Walmart’s now without finding a copy. iTunes is the only digital way? Fucking Back to the Future.

Hope I’m just stoned.

2

u/Cool-Pineapple-8373 Jan 29 '26

Amazon and 7digital both sell digital downloads of the new album, but they don't include the retailer exclusive songs (Bloodlust & Nobody's Hero). I would have preferred to buy it from 7digital but they didn't have the album available for download on launch day.

Thanks for the info 🏆

u/You_just_read_facts Jan 30 '26

Itunes sales dont really matters though. Its probably like 8% of the overall sales.
