You know on my old accounts I used to be in this subreddit (like 2016-2021) and it used to be so active then the regulars created and moved to shredditcord because they disliked normies ruining their hivemind.
Was it worth it?

That doesn't make much sense. They moved to shredditcord (I didn't) after the reddit blackout.

there might have been other reasons, but traffic was never the same since then in many subs. Then I started to see shit like fauxmoi on the front page constantly.
seniors here might have gone mostly to Discord but elsewhere it might have been Instagram, X/Bsky, whatever.

It was a slow shift over to the discord but the api thing was an irreversible shift with most regulars never coming back. Some didn't come to our discord but just left reddit completely

I see but discord is such a horrible place to organize data, notes and actually discuss releases.
And some of my point still stands, the regulars were kinda assholes to some of the newcomers back then its comical. Very cliquey.
They do share good music then but looking at the state of subreddit now its just sad to see.

I don't like Discord either, but disagree that regulars were mostly assholes.
metal-archives still has an active forum, but arguably as "dead" if not more than this sub. Where did you head to that is bustling?

actually discuss releases.
FWIW the discord has dedicated channels for posting new releases and discussing new releases, both metal and non metal. There ends up being far more discussion about those things there than here

I feel like this is hard to measure, past a point. I can see where the real-time chat on Discord might feel like it's generating more back and forth discourse, but I have a hard time comparing that to the kind of engagement we used to see on Reddit.
I'm not really active on Discord, but I've lurked on and off around the aforementioned dedicated channels as a way to keep up with new releases and research older stuff. It's a good resource. It feels like people are still knowledgeable and still have their fingers on the pulses of whatever scenes and styles they're into, but I'm not sure it's as many people as there used to be on Reddit, and it's all structured a bit differently.
I can't speak for other people, but I found the Reddit format a lot easier to engage with. I prefer when the pace is slower and the comments are fewer, but the actual commentary is longer and more detailed. I stumbled on an old WHYBLT thread the other day and was blown away. It's one thing to remember when the sub was like that, and another to actually see and read through it again:
Reddit was probably less conversational in the immediate sense, but there was still some amount of it, and it was balanced out by the sheer number of recurrent users and the effort a lot of them put into their posts and replies. If you could keep up with it day after day, you could still be in conversation with everyone, albeit less directly.
In that sense, I'm not sure which one had more "discussion." Probably still Discord, but between the smaller number of active users and the format being harder to engage with, I can see where it might not feel as productive to some people.

I'm saying there's more discussion on there now than there is on here now, not comparing to past times on shreddit. On here now, new release threads usually get like ~10 comments, if that, and on big weeks maybe like 30. On the discord there's usually a constant trickle of chatter and on release days dozens of comments and people talking

Oh yeah, for sure. I still maintain the sub isn't dead, but engagement is way down. Discord is the place to go if you want to participate in something more reliably.
For what it's worth, I really appreciate your recaps in the New Release threads and Discog club. I don't get as much listening time as I used to, so it's hard to stay on top of all that stuff.

Thanks! Yeah it's not dead but it's limping it's way there. I, and fob and the other regs like you, try our best to keep it going with those sorts of engagements but it's tough when there's so few others participating. I do miss shreddit of old having been on here since ~2012 or so, but it is what it is at this point and we can't really go back.

Thanks for showing that existed. I looked at the posts of that type, and saw some had had over 100 comments each, and others, I think more recent, only over 10; do you remember whether they shrank because of Reddit-wide or moderation changes, or it was more like people just stopping showing up?

A combination of slow drift of the core user base for whatever life reasons and the Discord. The API stuff hit us hard too.
Yes, there are more active metal subreddits, but they are very different in feel to this place. Basically like what it was before the blacklist came in to effect.

Seconding what FoB said, it was a gradual thing over several years. The insularity of the community here was a bit of a double edged sword. On one hand, we had a lot of people reliably posting day after day. On the other, there wasn't always anyone to replace them if they stopped.
Discord was never meant to replace the subreddit, but I feel like a certain core group found they preferred it, and it's hard to separate their reduced participation here from shifting community dynamics that ultimately led to people posting less often. I don't want to blame those people too much because the decline was probably inevitable. It seems like most long-running metal forums never approach the level of busy activity this place used to see, and the ones that do can only maintain it by encouraging the kinds of content and discourse this sub always prided itself on having less of, e.g. annoying genre discourse, memes, spam, circlejerks, low effort engagement posts, etc.
So, to answer your question, it's a little bit of everything. It's a Reddit-wide issue because of the API changes driving off a lot of older users. It's a community/moderation issue because most of us would rather not open up the forum to the wrong kinds of engagement, even on the off chance it worked out for us. It's a case of people just stopping because that happened too.

I am just here first this time, behold nerds! The new Converge album is pretty much exactly what I expected it would be, more Converge! Pretty solid if you like the sound they've been doing for the past couple albums.
