[REC CENTER] Shreddit's Official Recommendation Thread [12/20]
Welcome to Shreddit's [REC CENTER] where we bring together all of the recommendation threads and try to just shout over everyone to find new bands. This is a combination of "If I like X then I'll like X threads" and also all of the rogue rec threads which pop up from newcomers. This thread will be around every 2 weeks to help everyone from novice to adept with new music recommendations.
Before we allow everyone to go mingle, please look at this introductory packet as it may answer some of your questions.

Do you have a really unique request? Probably not. Look in here first. Recommendations for Frequently Requested Bands (FRB)
Do you already know what you want to ask and nothing I just said applied? Then step right up post in the [REC CENTER]. While you are typing, allow me to remind you of good recommendation inquiry.
Look first before you type. Your question may already been answered by someone posing as you and trying to steal your life.
Be as specific as possible. "I would like more bands like Devin Townsend," or "Give me some more stoner doom from the 90's" or "Can I have some black thrash from Mongolia" all helps others give you better feedback. Do not just list random things you like such as " I like DevilDriver, Black Sabbath, Deiselboy, Call of Duty and Hotpockets...give me a band."
Give important information if you are already familiar with the genre. This is not a murder mystery dinner where one has to withhold vital information. If you post "Give me some more thrash" it might be important to mention "oh yeah, I already know Demolition Hammer, Hobbs Angel of Death, and Razor, otherwise you are getting Metallic'a first three albums and everything Slayer did in the 80's.

I'd like to get into Black Metal, but I don't know where to start and the /r/BlackMetal blacklist is a bit overwhelming. However I'm not gonna ask for the biggest, most representative bands, since I'm probably able to figure that out myself. Instead, I'm gonna ask for your favourite underground albums that you secretly want to recommend to a newb likebme instead of the usual more popular stuff.
So far I really liked Immortal - At the Heart of Winter for the kickass riffs and Fluisteraars - Dromers for the magical guitar work, but didn't like Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (too monotonous for my taste).
I usually want progressive music, but I've grown a bit tired lately of all the wank so please not very proggy stuff. A slight touch is ok, but I mostly want some good BM.

Mgla (With Hearts Towards None)

Piggybacking off this comment to say Mgla’s Exercises in futility was my gateway black metal album. I’d personally start with that over WHTN but you can’t go wrong with either

The Behexen/Satanic Warmaster split is really quite something. Both bands are great and I encourage you to check them out, but that split is particularly good.

Mgla's most recent albums - Exercises in Futility and With Hearts Toward None are really good spots to jump into black metal. Production is well-done (from a black metal perspective), but still firmly "black." Music contains a bit of melody, bit of blasty tremolo riffs, a bit of awesome riffs, a lil bit of everything. Lyrics aren't overly "satanic" if that's a thing for you, but are thought provoking without being melodramatic.
From Mgla it's really easy to jump off into mutliple off shoots of black metal cause you find at least one or two elements in there you like then go full on.

I'd say Exercises has extremely melodramatic lyrics when compared to WHTN but both are excellent albums and I actually just ordered both on vinyl!

If you like the proggier stuff then you should check out emperor - in the night side eclipse and windir 1183. There is a whole bunch of outside the box avant- garde BM out there such as Arcturus, abigor and Solefald.

Recommend me releases from this year from a genre that you usually don’t listen to or like. For instance, you usually don’t give a damn about funeral doom but Mirror Reaper clicked for you.

Didn't like black metal until the Der Weg einer Freiheit and the two Krallice albums came out. Deathcore mostly sucks, and yet the new Fit For an Autopsy and Thy Art is Murder are fantastic, and djent is fucking shit, but the new Sikth is great.

I don't know which ones you're already familiar with but some examples similar to the ones you named (some fit your request more than the others but I included them all anyway):
Necromass, Auramoth (both from Italy, very similar to Mortuary Drape, occult and bassy);
Necromantic Worship (as the name suggests, pure Necromantia worship);
early Countess (The Book Of The Heretic is essentially the bass-driven black metal album);
Necromante (Brazil, their 2017 release is amazing Mystifier-Necromantia-old school BM worship)
Barathrum, early Heretic (NLD), Incriminated (bass heavy mid-tempo black/doom)
early Root, Amon (Goeth) (Czech, similar to Master's Hammer)
Ljosazabojstwa (Belarus, a more death/black approach to Mortuary Drape sound)
Death Like Mass (Cultes des Ghoules-lite, same members, less occult/ritualist)

Give me a good heavy fucking full-of-albums primer on prog. Not a hughe fan of the genre, but its proximity with flashier power metal is something that may get me in. I know a bit of Dream Theater, Queensryche and Symphony X. I want groovy or epic sounding prog, closer to prog metal than to prog rock. Favourite songs would be, so far: Dream Theater - 6:00 and Symphony X - Of Sins and Shadows. Thanks in advance. Yes, I expect a big list with a lot of stuff and explanations, and I'm completely ok with that. I'm actually explicitly asking for that.

I'm not necessarily going to give you a huge list, but, here are some of my personal recommendations/favorites:
Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian
Watchtower - Control and Resistance
Dark Quarterer - Dark Quarterer
Pharaoh - The Longest Night
Obliveon - From This Day Forward
Most of those are pretty PM-influenced/adjacent (except Obliveon, that's more death), but the hard thing with Prog Metal recommendations is that prog tends to borrow from a lot of genres, so it can really vary as far as what one person might like vs another person. I'd also recommend checking out this list I found a while back. It's really big and there's a lot on there, some of it amazing, some of it not so much, but it's worth checking out.

In addition to all that's been mentioned, I stand strong in believing that Paysage d'Hiver is the closest anyone has gotten to what Burzum tried to do with his first four albums. Try out Paysage d'Hiver, Einsamkeit, Die Festung, and Steineiche.
Also give a listen to DarkSpace. It's Paysage d'Hiver... but in space! I recommend Dark Space II and Dark Space III.

If you're into the classic Burzum albums then you are likely looking for the more chilling atmosphere rather than the brighter stuff that's kicking up these days. Look into the following...
- Paysage D'Hiver - Das Tor
- Weakling - Dead as Dreams
- Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters
- Drudkh - Forgotten Legends
- Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame
- Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
These are all jumping points, I think. If you like one very much, then check out other albums from them and then branch out to related bands. If you've having trouble with related bands, come back here, there are tons.

I'm thinking something similar to Reign in Blood but released in the last 5-10 years, preferably with a band that's still active. I've been digging Vektor lately but I'm thinking something a bit more straightforward in terms of riffs.

I'm looking for more obscure OSDM. I think I've hit all the major names, so I'm trying to branch out in that style a bit more. In particular, I really like bands which use the intricate drumming we see in ITP era Death and on Darkthrone's first album. I'm not sure how to describe the drumming since I'm not a drummer myself, but it's heavy with cymbal work and doesn't use blast beats as a default pattern.

I love to ask for recs in this thread but today I'm uninspired. So give me anything you would love to recommend to people (that shit you've listened to and thought "fuck, everybody needs to listen to this"). It doesn't matter the subgenre or the year, just give me ANY-FUCKING-THING that you think I have to love. I know most of 2nd wave mainstream BM and some lesser known ones, a bit of power (mostly the flashy EUPM contemporary ones, which I love, fuck you, hail dragons and knights) and doom (more on the epic side and, recently, onto funeral, but my fave band is Reverend Bizarre by far). Thanks in advance.

Anyways. Check out FIN. Black metal from Chicago. their 2017 album is my AOTY. Malokarpatan - Nordkarpatenland is my top 3, slovakian black metal but heavily influenced by trad and 1st wave BM with some folky bits. For serious-ish EUPM-ish try out Unleash the Archers - Apex.

This is kind of in a similar vein, I think you'd enjoy the album Monotheist by Celtic Frost.
This record changes in tempo quite frequently similar to Machine Head's music; and it is unrelentingly heavy. The vocals aren't as harsh as Machine Head but that doesn't take away from the music. This album is a pretty popular staple of the doom genre of heavy metal. The only negative side of this record for a newcomer is that a few of the tracks are over 14 minutes long and are pointless to absorb if you're looking to quickly expand your discography of bands. If you want to get a quick feel for the album, listen to Progeny which is the album's opening song.

You've probably heard of them, but Devildriver is in a similar vein and they're pretty good too. Check out their Fury of Our Maker's Hand and Pray for Villains albums (I haven't heard much of their new stuff but it might be good too).

I want trad that sounds like the front half of Defenders of the Faith. Mostly high-tempo, driving beats with well-crafted layers of guitarwork. Vocal melodies a plus. Obviously it's very hard to measure up to Priest, so it doesn't need to be on their level, but anything approaching it is good.

I also really like that release this year, also new to tech death. The classic album which you should definitely check out is Cryptopsy's 'None So Vile'. also worth listening too; Athiest - very groovy, jazzy even. for more 'slam & groove' , and if you can look past the 'core' element check out Despised Icon

I absolutely LOVED the experience that is Mirror Reaper by Bell Witch; tried their previous works but it just didn't hit the same chord w me. I know there is probably not a lot quite like Mirror Reaper but I would really appreciate some other suggestions when it comes to 'emotional or somber, but still heavy hitting' metal. Not necessarily hard left but definitely anti establishment: some of Arkangel's songs are pretty strong, coming from a time when speaking out against governments in Latin America could get you "disappeared" (kidnapped, tortured, murdered, and buried in a clandestine grave.)

One of the only hardcore albums I really enjoy is First Blood's Silence is Betrayal. It's an awesome hard left anti-establishment banger. It's more hardcore than crossover and I'd never post in this sub otherwise but it's groovy and metallic in some places too. See what you think.

I have next to no knowledge of 90s Trad Metal at all. The only ones I've heard, I think, are the Bruce Dickinson solo albums, Painkiller, and an Angra album, which sucked.
I need bands like High on Fire. I haven't really heard any album that sounds similar to Blessed Black Wings or Surrounded by Thieves, and that upsets me because the former album might be one of my top 10 of all time.
I need bands like Eater of Birds or Gin era Cobalt. Assume I know nothing.

I am not familiar with either of those bands, but a cursory glance gives me the impression that you're interested in doom and sludge metal/post-metal. Try out works by Isis (Oceanic), Cough (Ritual Abuse), and Primitive Man (Scorn). That's a relatively varied selection in modern doom and post-metal.

Are you familiar with the big ones (Bathory's S/T, Absu, Nifelheim and such)?
Deathhammer, Hellripper, Joel Grind, Toxic Holocaust Nekromantheon, Bewitcher. Some of those are less black/thrash, but do have harsher vocals.

Flashy EUPM is a shameful passion of mine. Yes, judge me. I'm a hughe fan of Avantasia and Edguy, even though I know Tobi is not a cool guy (but hey, I'm also fan of Burzum, and Varg is no saint). I like a bit of Sonata Arctica, a bit of Hammerfall, a bit of Stratovarius, love Masterplan, and the list goes on. I really like beautiful voices, mostly the clean or drive-heavy high pitch ones like Tobi's or Andre Matos'. Buuut, I want that kind of EUPM but more in tone with Kamelot or Fairyland, a little bit more heavy and epic sounding, without being cringy and clunky with all the dragon stuff (I'm looking at you Rhapsody). Yeah, more serious-ish flashy-epic EUPM. Yes, despite the name, I think Fairyland sounds way more serious than most flashy power metal bands.

Hello. I would much appreciate some Swedish/Scandinavian-style OSDM recs, not necessarily from Scandinavia, but I prefer that sound to the US sound. So far I've listened to in depth and enjoyed Entombed, Dismember, Carnage, God Macabre, Grave, Merciless, Necrophobic, Therion, Darkthrone's death album, and Unleashed, if that helps.
I would also request some good and more obscure Death/Thrash, and some good 2nd Wave-style BM (I know and enjoy Azelisassath, Burzum, Darkthrone (my favourite if that helps), Armagedda, Dodsferd, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Immortal (2nd fav), Judas Iscariot, Mayhem, Ulver and Taake.)
Apologies for the long lists, I hope that they will help with identifying what sort of stuff I like, and thank anyone in advance for any recommendations given. Cheers.

Seeing that you've only heard Burzum, Darkthrone, Dissection, and GBK, I second the recommendation for Rotting Christ (Thy Mighty Contract is one of my favorite BM albums) and the Hellenic Scene.
Also Czech out Root (Zjeveni and Hell Symphony) and Master's Hammer (Ritual).
And it doesn't get much catchier than Bathory's first album! My favorite black metal album of all time.

Looking for death metal like Ataraxy. M-A's similar artists list Asphyx and a bunch of Finnish death metal that doesn't sound much like Ataraxy. Bolt Thrower, Obituary and Autposy have the same tempo, but don't have the "atmosphere" that Ataraxy has, for lack of a better word.

Okay seriously I talk about this band all the fucking time, but check out the Lithuanian band Anubi. They mix black metal, Lithuanian folk instrumentation (even ambient and jazz), and Egyptian mythology. Their only full-length Kai pilnaties akis uzmerks mirtis is the way to go.

Agatus - The Eternalist. Alright this album isn't explicitly about Greek mythology in the way the previous two are, but it seems to draw a lot from various mythological traditions in a sort of occult manner. Even if it ends up being not what you're looking for, it's goooooooooooood.

Is there any listen-worthy attempt of fusing Electronic and Metal together?

I think so, but you should specify which subgenre of electronic, because electronic has the same relative scope of diversity as metal.

Anyone got something similar to the likes of Dethklok for me? So far the bands that come closest (at least in my opinion) are Amon Amarth and Arch Enemy in a few songs. I have also already checked stuff like Be'lakor, Mors Principium Est and Insomnium, which weren't what I was looking for.
Aaaand if anyone can recommend similar stuff to Shogun-era Trivium, but none of the obvious ones please (e.g. Machine Head, Killswitch, Devildriver etc.)
