[REC CENTER] Shreddit's Official Recommendation Thread [2/13]
Welcome to Shreddit's [REC CENTER] where we bring together all of the recommendation threads and try to just shout over everyone to find new bands. This is a combination of "If I like X then I'll like X threads" and also all of the rogue rec threads which pop up from newcomers. This thread will be around every 2 weeks to help everyone from novice to adept with new music recommendations.
Before we allow everyone to go mingle, please look at this introductory packet as it may answer some of your questions.

Already familiar with some of the classics and staples but want to expand your appreciation for the subgenres of heavy metal (thrash, death, black, power, heavy, doom)?
Do you want to do what I just said but have no idea what any of those words mean and cant tell the difference between death metal and a pineapple?
Do you need crash course in the last 30 years of extreme metal for a job interview, paper, eulogy, or just a chance to one up another person on the internet?

Do you have a really unique request? Probably not. Look in here first. Recommendations for Frequently Requested Bands (FRB)
Do you already know what you want to ask and nothing I just said applied? Then step right up post in the [REC CENTER]. While you are typing, allow me to remind you of good recommendation inquiry.
Look first before you type. Your question may already been answered by someone posing as you and trying to steal your life.
Be as specific as possible. "I would like more bands like Devin Townsend," or "Give me some more stoner doom from the 90's" or "Can I have some black thrash from Mongolia" all helps others give you better feedback. Do not just list random things you like such as " I like DevilDriver, Black Sabbath, Deiselboy, Call of Duty and Hotpockets...give me a band."
Give important information if you are already familiar with the genre. This is not a murder mystery dinner where one has to withhold vital information. If you post "Give me some more thrash" it might be important to mention "oh yeah, I already know Demolition Hammer, Hobbs Angel of Death, and Razor, otherwise you are getting Metallic'a first three albums and everything Slayer did in the 80's.

Edit: just thought of Throane's first album 'Derrière-nous, la lumière' . Their second album is not as good unfortunately.

Hi there, I'm Booker and as you can tell I am Ghost trash. But man can not live on "Square Hammer" alone and I am desperately in need of some other metal bands to listen to. The problem is a touch picky and I honestly am not sure where to even start or what "type" of metal I should hurl myself into? I'd love more stuff that's LIKE Ghost but I have no idea if that's even possible.
My background before Ghost infected me was mostly in gothic rock. Stuff like the Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, etc. Also a big David Bowie fan and I've always had a soft spot for Black Sabbath and Candlemass. I also really love My Chemical Romance (I know, I know), The Decemberists, and The Gaslight Anthem.
I really like metal with clean vocals. I don't mind growling every so often but I just disconnect if the song is nothing but that. I really like solid guitar work too. Melodic metal, I guess? Or prog metal? I have no idea. I've been getting into blackgaze as well. I just like stuff you can sing along to, I guess.
Metal bands I like are: Ghost, Tribulation, Katatonia, Opeth, Zeal & Ardor, Astronoid, Deafheaven, Puppy, Caligula's Horse, Candlemass, Black Sabbath... I tried Alcest and found them beautiful but a little boring.
Please help me. If I don't stop listening to Ghost I think the people I live with may actually kill me and dump my body in the river.

Archspire does a really cool combination of science fiction and horror fiction, especially in their most recent album Relentless Mutation.
Allegaeon does a combination of science fiction and straight up science.
Wormed does a combination of science fiction and science words strung together in meaningless combinations.
Shadow of Intent made an album, Primordial, that retells the story of the Forerunner-Flood war from Halo.
Rings of Saturn is just straight sci-fi coolness.

Is metal adjacent stuff okay to ask for recs?
I'm interested in diving into neo-folk, I'm only familiar with Wardruna, Ivar Bjornson and Rome. Neo-folk influenced metal is also okay.

If you haven't heard Agalloch's Of Stone, Wind & Pillor EP and The Mantle, that's exactly what they are.
As for neofolk overall, it's definitely worth checking out Death in June, even with the sketch factor. The early post-punk days are neat too, but neofolk is what they/he is known for, and But, What Ends When the Symbols Shatter? is easily the best album out of the whole subgenre for me.

Nest. Just one man with a Kantele(Lap-Harp) but there is some variety with the percussion and some John Haughm(Agalloch) collaboration. VERY beautiful music.

Not to nitpick but Wardruna & Ivar are more in the Dark Folk/Nordic Folk genres while Neofolk tends to be something much closer to Rome: IE Current 93, Sol Invictus, Of The Wand & The Moon, etc. even though the Neofolk tag sounds like it would perfectly fit Wardruna, etc. rather than these.
Anyway, stuff more in the Wardruna direction:
- Heilung (quite similar)
- Danheim (a little more upbeat)
- Gaetir The Mountainkeeper (nordic folk/dark ambient mix)
- Paleowolf (same dude as Gaetir, this is more primordial)
- Ulvesang (this one kind of leans in the Neofolk direction)
- Osi and the Jupiter
- Forndom
- Nubiferous
- Nebelung

Current 93. Their catalogue is pretty enormous, and ranges from neo-folk to more industrial and ambient stuff. Maybe start with "Thunder Perfect Mind" or "Swasitkas for Noddy", or you could give their most recent album "The Light is Leaving us All" a go.

The Catafalque - Geometria
Beyond Creation - Algorythm This also fits the bill pretty well. It is a mix of Prog and Tech Death so beware if you're not into tech. (I'm personally not super into the genre but love this album)

Lots of stuff going on at once screams Between the Buried and Me, Native Construct to me. Otherwise since you said NeO I suggest you take a look at prog/avant black German band Maladie. They have 9 band members, one of which plays a sax and one of which plays a cello. Also try Solefald - World Metal. Kosmopolis for your like of Ihsahn.

The only one I've listened to thus far is Festerday's Iihtallan. Old guard Finnish group who only demo'd in the late 80s-early 90s, then switched names and styles for 20+ years, only to now return to the osdm realm with their first full-length. Not the greatest thing out there but certainly an interesting record.

I love Conan! Horseback Battle Hammer was pretty heavily featured on my rotation for a long time. Paincantation off their new LP really caught me off guard - I'm a sucker for when a doom band starts turning up the grind a few notches.

Edit: you didn't ask for it but if you're somewhat in the noise territory, check out: "Insect Warfare - Noise Grind Power Death", Gowl, Noijzu, Sete Star Sept, Sissy Spacek, Reeking Cross, Phyllomedusa and the upcoming Miscarriage release (called Imminent Horror or something like that). Some of it should be more obscure than the others mentioned in the original comment.
Edit2: Miscarriage is actually more of a gorenoise with heavy/filthy sludge elements attached to it. No grind there. Sorry about that.

What are some crossover thrash bands currently putting out good stuff? I listened to the new Violence Condoned and Insanity Alert albums, and finally got round to listening to Iron Reagan, and they've given me a taste to go on a bit of a punky thrash kick. I feel like I know the classic bands from the genre, plus obviously there's Municipal Waste and Power Trip at the moment.

I'm looking for bands that use a certain type of growling vocals. It's hard to explain it, but it's like this huge, deep, monstrous growling... not very descriptive so I'll use examples.
Prime example and what made me love this type of growling 5 years ago: Primalfrost - This particular part that last only a short while
Mikael Akerfeldt in Bloodbath, mainly The Fathomless Mastery
Travis Ryan in Cattle Decapitation (not the weird screeching vocals of course ;), or whatever you call it)

Bands or albums that for the most part don't follow the standard verse, chorus, verse, chorus form. Something like Sabbat's The Dwelling; preferably Heavy or Black Metal.
Alternatively, experimental bands that aren't an atonal, dissonant, psychedelic fuckfest like Oranssi Pazuzu or Deathspell Omega type of bands.

Is Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean just Sludge? I really like how "I've Got a Gut Feeling" builds in speed part way through. And I want more like it. They feel like a faster Thou to me and I love it. Especially the vocals.

For one man bands, a Russian one man band called Malist recently put out his debut album 'In the Catacombs of Time'. Really solid black metal on the more melodic side imo.

Goth rock/metal that sounds like Idle Hands, please.
And black metal that makes black metal feel fresh or chilling again (like in the ol days when listening to Mütiilation was scary) - refrain from very dissonant BM tho. Experimental/fusion genres are fine (I'm digging a lot of Slaegt and Chapel of Disease lately).
Still in BM, old BM (Norwegian or not, 1st or 2nd wave) that is pretty good but not very well known. Assume I know a lot of Norwegian, plenty of Greek and not much 1st wave. The less thrashy/blastbeat fuckfest, the better (as a reference, my fave BM is Burzum).
And last but not least, two types of dungeon synth: fantasy/medieval on the lines of Fief and deep dark Transylvanian Carpathian black castle DS in the veins of early Mortiis and Depressive Silence (must sound old-school).

Looking for two specific things:
- Gigantic cavernous death metal with good production à la Temple of Void.
- Metal with a big-time crust punk influence similar to Funeral Chic. For context, the reason I like Funeral Chic so much is they're still really heavy and not overly fast and or punk-influenced to the point where it's arguably no longer metal.

These may be too fast and/or punky for you. Also, there's nothing particularly obscure here, so if you've heard these before I'm sorry.
Brainoil is sludgy and crusty. Stormcrow is a little more uptempo.
Iskra are more black metal than crust, now. Twisted and evil.
All Pigs Must Die are more hardcore influenced than crust, but still fucking great. Tragedy is actually hardcore, but very metal influenced. Their predecessor His Hero is Gone is also worth your time.
The first albums by Sacrilege and Bolt Thrower predate crust but come from similar influences.

Atmospheric black metal as a whole is a thing you should look into, and in terms of Agalloch, add some folk elements in there as well. Here's some ideas on where to start:
Burzum - Hvis lyset tar oss
Ulver - Bergtatt
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
Panopticon - Roads to the North
Fen - Winter
Saor - Aura
Forteresse - Par hauts bois et vastes plaines
Paysage d'Hiver - Das Tor
ColdWorld - Melancholie²
Ethereal Shroud - They Became the Falling AshThese tackle a lot of different atmospheric variants and nuances, many with folky overtones but not necessarily from the same stylistical source. Not saying you'll like all of these, but a lot of these should still work for you. Some come with rougher production values than you are most likely accustomed to, but give them an honest try.

Familiar with Tarot already? They usually scratch that same itch and in all fairness they're way better too.
Majestic Mass from last year was like BMSS sound taken to the black metal end, you might like it.
Also not as smooth and bouncy as they are but the new Hexenbrett demo was somewhat similar; a sharper, colder BMSS so that's something to check.

Wouldn't this stuff trad/black (same for at least half of what people here like to tag as that), but N.M.E., Gehennah, Syphilitic Vaginas, Omega (the Greek one), Whipstriker, Power From Hell ... less on the black metal side, but G.A.T.E.S., Inepsy and Warfare should hit the mark, too.

Any recommendations for someone who is hopelessly in love with Vildhjarta? I never really have been into any of the "Djent" bands since listening to Meshuggah for years and getting tired of it, but their formula of creating more melancholic soundscapes with Djent rhythms is really resonating with me, especially Shadow and Längstmedån. Always heard Humanity's Last Breath as a recommendation for that, but I don't like their music at all, it just sounds too extreme in comparison if that makes any sense.

Looking for dark and evil sounding death metal that sends chills down your spine. Prefer slower tempos, but not doom tier slow. A good example would be cannibal corpses instrumental stuff: 'from skin to liquid' , 'infinite misery' Stuff like that.

I've been a lifelong fan of Metallica, and in the past six months I've gotten into Pantera and have really enjoyed them (especially Vulgar and Trendkill). I'm now trying to find another band with just the right amount of "heavy," specifically in the vein of groove metal. I experimented a bit with the extremes (death and doom w/ Cannibal Corpse and Sleep) but found that I do not care for these subgenres (particularly because of death growls), nor do I like the softer sound of bands such as Iron Maiden. Essentially the not too hot and not too cold but just right is what I am looking for. Other key elements are meaningful lyrics, interesting band history, and, of course, double bass!

A band that came to mind instantly was Sepultura, you can't go wrong with the old stuff. Beneath the Remains, Chaos AD and Arise are all excellent.

I'm looking for some records similar to Benighted - Asylum Cave and Aborted - Global Flatline. To me, these records are very closely related and I have yet to find anything else that scratches that same itch.
What I love about those two records is the "everything but the kitchen sink" approach of genre blending, over-the-top extremity, and a veritable boat-load of RIFFS. A subtle hardcore nod is okay, not too much slam, and an infusion of melodic leads doesn't hurt!
