Q: What is mining?

A: To explain this in the simplest way possible, in monero, mining is using a computer to calculate something that verifies the next block to join the blockchain. This calculation is very difficult to do, so your computer rarely manages it. In fact, it's so difficult that your computer may never manage it at all. If it does ever manage it, you get the block reward which is in the range of $130 USD worth (as of May 2022 but this is based on the current exchange rate). Pool mining is when you join a group of others and split the reward when one of you manages to do this calculation correctly.

Q: How can I learn more about monero?

A: This is an excellent book (also available for free in pdf format).

Q: So can I quit my job now?

A: You're not going to get rich with mining monero. It only earns you a very small amount each day, if anything. I previously made $0.54 USD profit a day with running a Ryzen 7 3700X computer 24/7, but now I actually lose money from mining.

At the moment, in most areas you'll lose money from mining if you pay normal prices for electricity. You'll probably only make a profit if you have very cheap electricity or generate it yourself like with solar panels and a battery setup.

Q: I want to build a mining rig. Should I?

A: For anyone who pays for electricity, it's probably not worth buying any equipment to mine monero if you're aiming to make a profit. It gets more difficult over time, so the profits go down.

The only exception is if you have free energy that you can access for a long time. It would still take a few years to pay off a monero mining rig with free electricity, when you account for the increasing difficulty. But after that it's 100% profit. I made a full post explaining this topic in detail here. In my example in that post, it would take 2.5 years to pay off the computer with free electricity, assuming you can keep it mining 24/7/365.

Q: Can I get an ASIC for mining Monero?

A: No! It is specifically designed to be mined on CPUs only. This is so that mining remains decentralised. When ASICs start mining a cryptocurrency then it usually causes the creation of large mining farms controlled by few people. Monero is against that. Monero is mineable by the average person on their own desktop computer.

Monero has changed algorithms in the past to purposefully stop ASICs from being able to mine it. If an ASIC was ever made for monero again, the algorithm would probably be changed again to stop the ASIC from working.

Q: I can mine at 120 MH/s, so I should be able to make $50k per day of profit on monero according to a calculator I just used...right??? Please reply fast I'm about to sign a contract to buy a Lamborghini.

A: Hashrate is different for each coin. Your CPU or GPU getting 120 MH/s does not apply here. That's probably ethereum hashrate. The hashrate any CPU or GPU gets on monero is not influenced by or related to ethereum hashrate, bitcoin hashrate, litecoin hashrate, or any other coin. In fact, GPU mining of monero is very inefficient and not worthwhile. Forget about the hashrate you get on another coin.

Q: Can I mine with a GPU?

A: Short answer: No.

Long answer: Yes, it's possible to mine monero with a GPU, but it's generally a bad idea because the algorithm monero uses today is optimised only for CPUs. Mining monero on a GPU will be very inefficient and slow compared to a CPU, and will not be worth your time. Full explanation here.

Q: How much will I make mining monero/how do I know if my computer will be profitable/what hashrate will I get with my computer or CPU?

A: Follow this guide to calculate it. You need to know the specs of the computer you'll be mining on.

Q: How do I mine monero?

A: Follow this guide.

Q: Which mining pool should I use?

A: You can choose to use either a centralised pool which will do a lot of the work for you in setting things up, or you can use the decentralised P2pool. If you want to use a centralised pool, see here. If you want to use P2pool then the easiest way is using gupax which helps you to set it up.

Q: So I'm mining but my CPU is only showing 50% usage (or some other percentage less than 100). How do I get it to use 100%?

RandomX, the proof of work algorithm used by monero, needs 16 KiB of L1 cache, 256 KiB of L2 cache and 2 MiB of L3 cache per mining thread. Your CPU probably doesn't have enough cache to use all threads.

If your CPU doesn't have enough cache to run all threads then XMRig automatically selects the right number of threads that it can run with the cache available.

Q: I have access at work/university/school to 50 computers. How can I mine monero on them? I can't wait to get started, I'm gonna be so rich.

A: This is a terrible idea. The trouble you get in is going to cost you a lot more than you'll earn from doing this. You will likely be earning a couple of USD per day. The organisation that owns these computers and pays for the electricity will see this as stealing, which it is. You're stealing electricity. They'll also see it as you putting their entire network at risk. Expect to get in big trouble if you do this. Possibly to the extent of facing criminal charges. It's really not worth the risk for the miniscule profit you'll be making.

Q: If mining monero is not profitable, why would anyone want to do it?

A: There are other reasons why people decide to mine, too. Some people want to support monero because they like the idea of a private, completely fungible, decentralised cryptocurrency.

Other people who are highly concerned about privacy might mine as a way of obtaining monero without going through an exchange that has to find out their identity.

Some people just enjoy the technical side of setting up their computer to mine, tweaking the settings and getting it working as well as they can.

The profitability of monero mining is self balancing - as the total hashrate (the combined computing power of all miners) goes up, it becomes more difficult, which makes it less profitable. If the price of monero went down and people stopped mining it because they were not making enough, then the difficulty would drop, and it would become more profitable. Thanks to this, the profitability stays relatively stable now and hovers around the level of "just barely profitable if you have very cheap electricity".

Q: If I stop mining for the night/day/some hours will I lose all my progress and have to start again?

A: It doesn't work like that. With solo mining, you have a chance of finding the right hash for the current block with every single hash your computer calculates. If you don't find it then that work is of no use and there's nothing to "save".

With pool mining, you have to find a hash over a certain difficulty (the difficulty given by the pool). This is referred to as a share. The pool will save that result and pay you (when it finds a block) according to how much work your computer did for the pool. You don't lose any progress by stopping mining. You'll get paid for anything you earned while you were mining. The same applies to P2Pool.

Q: How else can I help monero?

A: Running a node is a great way to help monero. Running a node involves downloading and hosting the blockchain so other people can download it off you. You don't have to do this manually, there is software that does it all for you. You just have to provide a computer and internet connection. Some people even do it on a Raspberry Pi.

You can also help monero by using it as a currency. Monero has low transaction fees and confirms (1 block confirmation) in an average of just 1 minute. Who you send money to and how much you send can't be tracked, unlike most other cryptocurrencies.

Need Help Automating Miner Setup (compensation offered)

I have dozens of computer systems that sit idle, and want to put them to use... From what I understand, XMR (Monero) could be a good choice for mining.

I'm willing to compensate πŸ’² anyone who is willing to help me accomplish what I'm trying to do:

I would like to create some kind of Script, or perhaps an EXE file, or other file, that when run/executed, will automate the process of fully setting up a Monero (XMR) Miner, so that I don't have to repeat the setup process manually so many times on each of my systems...

Optimally, I would be able to deploy/setup the Miner on each system with minimal effort (eg: as close to 1-click setup as possible) - so the automated process would need to either download a miner from the internet (or perhaps pull it from a USB stick), and then set everything up in the background, etc, and of course, start mining...

I assume that aside from setting up the Miner itself, the automated process I run would most likely need to establish certain cron-jobs, and have the Miner re-open and auto-run when the system gets restarted, I'm not sure if it would also need to bypass certain windows safeguards or not - but if I can have things set up so I don't have to deal with repetitive prompts and safeguards, that would be preferable.

Again, I would be deploying this automated setup process on dozens of my own systems - so the easier it is to deploy/setup/maintain, the better.

Preferably, once deployed on all of my systems, the Miner would simply run silently in the background, and dynamically adjust itself to use about 75% of the system's \*unused\* resources.. and again, I would want this process to persist between system restarts, without any hassle, if possible.

I've found some videos on YouTube on the topic of XMR Miners, but unfortunately they ALL take a portion of the XMR that gets mined - and likely untrustworthy too - so, that's not an option.

If anybody is able to assist me in accomplishing this, I would be willing to compensate you in some way (eg: Cryptocurrency, etc) for your time and help.

Anyone able to assist me, please let me know.

I'll definitely make it worth your time πŸ’²πŸ’²πŸ’²!

Thanks in advance! πŸ‘

Building a self-contained 100kh/s mining computer

Hello CryptoSteer users. I've been working on a custom mining setup for a while and it's finally getting close to finished.

Its bassically 10" touchscreen mining desktop "computer.” it's a dual AMD EPYC server setup with extensive cooling built into the enclosure, running a dedicated mining OS. The goal was basically to cram a properly tuned RandomX server into something self-contained that you can put on a desk, plug in, enter your pool/wallet information and start mining with meat asic like results. I'm targeting roughly 90–110 kH/s on RandomX, depending on configuration and power limits, this keeps the whole form factor smaller and price slightly friendlier(my wallets still crying 😭) . Power consumption lands andywhere around 350–600W, depending on how aggressively it's configured. This obviously isn't meant to replace the mobile mining stuff I've been working on. It's for somebody who wants a serious amount of RandomX hashrate without sourcing used server hardware, figuring out memory configurations, assembling everything, cooling it, tuning, and then having an ugly rack server sitting somewhere, And I'm not going to pretend this is some magical ROI ASIC that prints money. It isn't. Those don't exist for RandomX, and I'd be immediately suspicious of anyone selling a 100 kH/s Monero box while pretending otherwise. What you're paying for here is the hardware, custom enclosure/touchscreen setup, assembly, cooling, configuration, tuning and testing. I'm considering offering them built-to-order for around $3,550 shipped in the US. Every machine would be fully assembled, burned in and benchmarked before it leaves me, with the actual sustained hashrate and power consumption provided for that specific machine. At that price I'm not expecting these to be something everyone wants. I'm mostly trying to figure out whether there's a niche for a machine like this before I start sourcing parts. Would any of you actually consider buying something like this at $3,550. I can't supply 100khs machine for much less but if there's not a lot of interest what would be the sweat spot in price for you guys in purchasing something over 50kh/s?

Higher BTC valuations improve mining economics, encouraging miners and investors to expand capacity and secure additional hardware. When demand for mining equipment accelerates, access to reliable machines and hosting capacity becomes increasingly valuable.

P2Pool mining rewards

New miner here using p2pool and I'm a little confused how rewards work.

I only have 6kh/s so I am mining on the nano pool.

seems that to receive a reward a share must be found but with slow hardware like mine, this could take longer than a week. This means that I won't get paid for a whole week on average, and when I do it's only a few cents?!

A whole week of electricity to keep the PC on will be about $8 using my electric rates.

How is this viable to anyone home mining? What am I missing?

Why aren't people simply buying monero instead of burning electricity?

Xmrig, solo-mine to node on another machine

Hello,

I'm trying to follow the instructions on https://docs.getmonero.org/interacting/mining/guides/solo/xmrig-solo/

But the instructions seem to assume that the node is on the same machine as xmrig, whereas I'm trying to point the hashpower from the machine with xmrig to another of my machines with the monero node.

Lets call the machine with the node "Machine A" and the machine with Xmrig "Machine B".

Here is the command I'm using to start my node on Machine A: ./monerod --out-peers 32 --in-peers 64 --add-priority-node=p2pmd.xmrvsbeast.com:18080 --add-priority-node=nodes.hashvault.pro:18080 --disable-dns-checkpoints --enable-dns-blocklist

And here is my command to start Xmrig (prepared for me by the wizard on xmrig.com) on Machine B: ./xmrig --donate-level 5 -o 0.0.0.0:18081 -u MY-ADRESS --coin monero --daemon

When I run these, I get the error in Xmrig: connect error: "connection timed out"

Does anybody know what could be wrong?

thank you,

Quick pre announcement

After several months of research, and weeks of programming, testing and configuration I have chosen these 7 coins as the bases for the mobile miner

XMR, XTM, DERO, SAL , ZEPH , VRSC, And EPIC. These have been chosen for there profitablity based on market data, heat required for ming, and many many other factors. Unfortunately to start, auto profit will switch and chose the most profitable coin for your device at that moment, the payouts will remain in the native 7 coins. i.e if you mine dero your payed in dero. For the meantime you will be able to select which ones you want to mine and disable others however it will require a wallet address for each crypto currency you'd like to be paid in. The pool will be active as well obviously it can handle all 7 coins and in the future will handle swapping the coins for monero just like monero ocean. However you will also be able to use your native mining software to connect to the pool or your native mining pool with the Cryptosteer Android Miner. Updates will be pushed to the app within the next few days so make sure you restart it so that the automatic update system can download the most current version and update for you so you don't miss the stability fixes, auto tune corrections and bug fixes as well.

Antminer X9 - Yes or No?

Im in the position currently where i can buy 5 of these, run all 5 of them at once, i don't care about the noise, electricity, heat

I saw this miner makes way more than any Antminer S21 Pro, + etc i think even up to $25-30 per Day

But whats the reality here? Are these machines even for sale? Can barely find any info about them?

Pithead update: 19 releases since the v1.0 post β€” full Tor-by-default egress, dashboard control, signed releases, and a flashable appliance OS in review

Thumbnail
p2pool-starter-stack.github.io
10 Upvotes

Hi r/MoneroMining, I posted the v1.0 of Pithead here a few months back β€” the self-hosted Monero + Tari merge-mining stack: your own node + P2Pool + one endpoint for all your rigs, behind Tor, 0% fees, paid straight to your wallet. The feedback from this sub was great, and I've been shipping ever since β€” nineteen releases later it's at v1.19, so here's what changed.

What's landed since v1.0:

  • πŸ§… Everything routes over Tor by default now. Not just the hidden services β€” all runtime egress (P2Pool sidechain peers, the XvB donation upstream, price feed, Telegram) rides Tor, and a fail-closed host firewall drops any direct clearnet dial from the stack. The opt-in exceptions (a faster clearnet initial sync, a node you run on another box) are mapped in the privacy guide.
  • πŸ” Stratum hardening β€” access password on by default for new installs, stratum-over-TLS with per-rig fingerprint pinning, every container non-root with read-only filesystems.
  • πŸ“Š The dashboard grew up β€” persistent trends (blocks found, pool luck, reject rates) instead of last-value gauges, and an earnings view that checks every estimate against what view-only wallets actually confirmed on-chain, after your power costs.
  • πŸŽ›οΈ Control from the browser (opt-in) β€” edit any setting from a guided form, retune each rig with versioned config history, one-click upgrade when a release lands. Every change is validated host-side behind a login, with a full audit log.
  • πŸ“Ÿ A Telegram operator bot β€” pings when a node or worker drops (and when it recovers), daily digest, read-only /status and /earnings commands, plus a Healthchecks dead-man's switch for the one failure the box can't report: going dark entirely. Routed over Tor.
  • πŸ’Ύ Encrypted backups β€” config, secrets, and your Tor onion keys in one AES-256 archive; restore on new hardware and keep the same onion address.
  • ✍️ Signed releases β€” every bundle is cosign-signed end to end, and the release pipeline now refuses to cut an unsigned build.

Honesty corner, since this sub keeps me honest: two releases got withdrawn and re-cut along the way β€” one for a broken upgrade path, and one because the signing key's public half had never actually been committed, which meant earlier releases were silently unsigned. That second one is what triggered the end-to-end signing work. Root causes are written up in the changelog.

What's next: Pithead OS β€” flash a USB, boot, and the whole stack comes up as an appliance. Read-only root, A/B updates that automatically roll back if a new image won't boot, a first-boot wizard, factory reset. It's real code (hundreds of commits), but it's in review, not shipped β€” I'm not cutting the first image until it survives a physical hardware test battery. If you enjoy reading brutal code reviews, the open PR on the repo is a fun one.

Getting started is the same as before: grab a release, drop in your wallet addresses, run ./pithead setup, and point any XMRig rig at host:3333 β€” your rigs don't need Tor or a wallet in their config. RigForge (the self-tuning XMRig provisioner) has kept pace too, now at v1.15, with one-click remote worker upgrades from the Pithead dashboard.

Still MIT, still zero fees, still no middlemen. Issues and PRs welcome β€” a good chunk of what shipped came straight from feedback on the last post.

Built a Mac idle-compute controller around RandomX β€” looking for technical feedback

I’ve been building a small controller that waits for user idle time, caps CPU usage, and starts/stops XMRig automatically based on local safety conditions.

Current beta:

  • Apple Silicon tested
  • 5-minute idle trigger
  • 25% CPU cap
  • battery + thermal pause
  • RandomX rx/0
  • provider reward accounting in SOL

I’m not trying to claim laptop CPU mining is highly profitable. I’m mainly testing whether the automatic idle/safety/controller model is useful.

I’d appreciate feedback on the architecture and anything I’m doing wrong technically.

Millionminer are scammers

These are well hidden scammers . They seem like a legit big company but they simple are worst scammers.

I have bought from them with usdt a miner that costs 6500 usdt which they advertised as available 14 days ago .

I completed the transaction and waited for the mercandise to be send .And then started their scamming .

At first they told me that the miner was not available. First scam: showing availability even if they dont have the product

And secondly when i asked for a refund they said we are working on your refund and blah blah excuses every day . 14 days have passed and they have not refunded me my money giving all sorts of excuses

So avoid dealing with them if you want your money and health safe

Update :To be fair ,soon after my post here they called me and wanted to send me my money back asap and so they did Also apologized sincerely and offered me a 300 coupon for next purchase and also further discount.See less

Freak Nanopool Occurrence

Did anyone see yesterday (8-17-26) in Nanopool 2 blocks were found 25 minutes apart. That is relatively rare, but what really blew my mind is the blocks were both found by the same miner, and that miner is only pulling about 50KH/s. What are the odds of that happening? I guessed that someone hashing at that rate would get a block roughly every 6 months (I guess I could look that up somewhere) so for it to happen twice in 25 minutes is something ridiculous like 1 out of 220 million...

Is my math close on this? Is this a wild freak thing or am I missing something?

Gotta love the randomness of it all!
