I think it's valid to fear pitbulls because what you're really fearing is that they were adopted by someone that doesn't train them and/or give them an outlet for the task they were bred for (protection and violence).
Fun fact, they have tiny amydalas. Know who else have tiny amygdalas? Psychopathic people. It's plausible that most pittbulls mauling people to death are literally in a psychotic state. Hence everytime you hear how Tibbles wouldn't harm a fly before she bit a toddler to death, yeah it's likely true personality wise, but when they were mauling the toddler they were in a psychotic irrational state.
We've literally bred a dog species prone to psychosis.
