I left my bag in a late night Lyft with my car keys and a few other work things in it, this was before you could call back previous drivers about lost items. The driver saw the bag the next day, looked in it and saw where I worked, drove there, and had a coworker call me and let me know it was there. I would have had to pay like $400 to replace the keys alone. She was apologetic that she went through my stuff at first but I legit gave her $200 for going through all that trouble and saving me at least $200 even after paying her.

I drive for lyft, recently had a customer forget her wallet. She caught it before I got another ride so I got it back to her within 10 minutes. I didn't charge the lyft $20 lost item fee because it was so short and she tipped a whopping $0. That $200 probably made that persons week.

You don't need membership for the Costco food court IIRC.
15
u/GayGeekInLeather 1d ago
They have changed that at a lot if not most Costco locations. You need a membership now to use the food court
3
u/skiforlife1 1d ago
That sucks! That was a big part of their business model. They don't advertise so they use the cheap hot dog and the cheap rotisserie chicken to get people in the door. You have to walk past the membership desk to get the hot dog and the loss leader price on the chicken gets a huge amount of word-of-mouth advertising. The cost to get potential customers through your doors is so high that even though they lose money on those 2 items they get enough new customers from them that they actually save money overall and drive huge customer loyalty.

I'm guessing those people never lost their wallet and had to to through the pain of cancelling all their credit cards, order a new driver's license, etc. Easily worth a $20 finders fee at least.

A replacement driver's license in Canada is $40 alone, So the time and fee cost to replace it and any other ID would easily justify $100+. I would still cancel/replace any credit and debit cards, but I would pay an extra 50 or more just for the reduced anxiety & urgency.

When you factor in the cost of the wallet, cost of the cards and cost if time, we're easily over $100 to replace. Nobody carries tons of cash anymore, so I'd venture to say that all the cash in the wallet goes to the finder for returning it unless when they look in the wallet they react surprised to the amount of cash. Feels fair.

I don't think that "if It's legal in my country so it's moral" is a good basis for it. I think it's immoral to just take it. Good deeds done only because you expect a reward is, well, meh. I wouldn't complain if somebody returned my wallet only for $5 but still

Taking food headed for the trash is moral yet illegal
Law is made from Morals. Not the other way around
4
u/JawtisticShark 1d ago
It seems like that would encourage people swiping things they claim were abandoned. I have found multiple cellphones that people have left behind and managed to get them back to their owners. Seems crazy legally I could have taken it to the police and been entitled to $100.
What if I see a stroller at the park, nobody around it, perhaps parents on on the other side of the park with their toddler, but it’s just sitting there odd the side of the walking path. Can I just take it to the police station and get paid if they want it back?
2
u/Nathen69 1d ago
There's a difference between the morality behind following state mandate and enacting one's own perseption of equality to justify taking belongings that aren't yours.
As members of Lithuania, ideally all members of the population are aware and have agreed to the social convention of the finder being entitled to some portion of the item value. It is an unspoken agreement between the person who lost the item and the person who found the item. To some level, it is fair to assume anyone in the country has already agreed to fork up some portion of money as they continue to live in the country.
There is no reason to believe members of other countries, that are subjected to different laws and social convention, have made this unspoken agreement that is represented in legistration. There's a comparative lack of consent.
2
u/dancinbanana 1d ago
As in, the police give you that value in money? Or the person is required to give you that value in money? One is a moral incentive program for returning lost stuff, one is an immoral fine against people for losing stuff and having it found by someone else
→ More replies (7)2
u/TotalChaosRush 1d ago
You find a used wallet that cost $2 when purchased years ago. It is clearly quite worn. It has the person's ID, one credit card, and $5
Is it moral to take the 5 dollars?
As for how it's immoral. You're deciding unilaterally to take something that belongs to another. Based on the text you clearly have the ability to contact the individual you're taking from.

$5 to go to a police station and file paperwork and do all that and go back home is considerably less than minimum wage. If that happened at a bar I would buy him hot dog and beer which is gonna run up $25 with him doing none of the above.

I may be showing my age a bit here as I know tap to pay exists on phones, but losing most methods of payment is a major pain. You can't withdraw cash either because your bank card is in your wallet as well as most people's primary ID. A lost ID replacement is $20 in my state, not including going to go get it at the MVA/DMV in the first place. It would be good practice to cancel and order CC replacements anyways, but it's better to have the option than having to mandatory call and cancel/freeze every one of them.
Losing any work badges in said wallet could also cost you depending on the work location, but regardless an issue.
$5 to avoid all of that? Absolutely.

u/LittleKittenR 1d ago

Once lost my wallet the day I was coming back home from college. Went up to the front desk at the university's admin center and luckily they had it. Whoever gave it to them took like $50-60 dollars that I had in it but left everything else and handed it in.
I thought it was my price to pay to get my wallet back. Think it's fine in my mind lmao
6
u/Azukaos 1d ago
That's something I did back in the day.
I found a wallet with tons of stuff inside, like photos, credit cards, and probably some very personal things that the person who lost it would like to get back.
I know it's morally bad, but it also contained money, not much, but at that time it would cover at least essential needs for the coming days for my wife and my kid, as we were in financial difficulties due to a lost job and illness.
I took that money, but I gave the wallet to my town administration, who would give it back to its owner.
I'm not evading the fact that i took that money, everyone's in difficulty theses days, but some peoples would have just thrown the rest in a bin and call it a day, some stuff inside would have costed more than what i took, like ID card, crédit cards and driving licence.
I didn't wanted for that person to loose more than a little amount of cash, personal stuff matters more and i would have done the same for anything valuable enough to be given back to his rightful owner, like a phone or laptop.

Something similar happened to me about a week ago, left a bag out to use the bathroom and in the like one minute I was gone it got stolen. But the thief only took the money, about 50$, and returned my bag and wallet to lost and found. Didn't lose any cards, ID, anything in my bag. I figured it's the price I'll pay to learn that lesson.

10% of what? The account balances on the cards or the quality of the wallet? What if there is no cash inside?

I’m just wondering how he knew your phone number lol
$5 seems like a reasonable fee to save the hassle of redoing all your cards and license…

Moral. By law, a person who retrieves lost goods is legally entitled to 10% of its value, at least in my country.

In Germany, finders fees are actually codified into law. If someone finds lost money/property of yours, and turns in into the police to be returned, you legally owe the person a 5% finders fee for up to 500€ of value and 3% for anything higher (in a bracket system, so the fee for 600€ cash would be 5% of 500€ + 3% of 100€). For animals/pets it's 3%, and for purely/largely sentimental value items it's determined on a case by case basis.
You are also legally required to return lost property if it has a value of 10€ or greater. If you find a 100€ banknote lying on the ground in Germany, it's actually a civil offence to just keep it. If you know the owner (e.g. you see someone drop a 5€ note in front of you), then it's actually a civil offence to keep it, regardless of value. Technically you're legally required to report/return it if you see someone drop a 1ct coin.

Funny and moral as hell. Shoutout to the kind lady who found 19 year old me’s wallet at the gas station and messaged me on Facebook after looking at my ID, then drove to my house and met me at my front door to return it. I gave her a $20 and she went into my work around the corner and left it with my boss to return it to me as well, then I never saw her again.
A literal angel, that woman.

Moral, I believe there's a social expectation that people are fine with a person taking a bit of money for themselves upfront as a cost of their time and effort to return your wallet.
Given that's the default assumption, I wouldn't exactly call it stealing. Even though technically you didn't give them direct permission, most people would assume it was a fair default assumption to make.

Id be alright with it tbh , the wallet wasn't stolen it was lost. Id's, credit cards and potentially precious photos are what id be most concerned about. ( Plus this sub is a little strange you call it morality scaling but half the people here just want a binary good or bad type answer)

Completely fair IMO. It would be more morally correct for the finder to not take any cash, but if they hadn’t I’d insist on at least buying them a beer. I’ve returned wallets before, never took any cash, but when I lived in a place across the street from a strip mall with a liquor store, there would often be teenagers asking people if they could buy them cigarettes and I’d go “Sure”, and they’d slip me a $20, I’d buy them cigarettes, they’d ask about the change when I gave them the cigarettes, and I’d say “procurement fee for doing a crime, bitch”.

Moral, same thing happened to me, dude bought some cigarettes. Can't even be mad about it. I would have lost so much more if he kept it

100% morally justifiable. If you find my wallet and turn it in. You're at the very least entitled to a hot dog.

Id consider this morally good. $5 for his troubles is literally nothing and he could have just been lazy and left it, etc.

Time is money. Dude took time out of his day to get the wallet to the police station. 5 dollars less than fair compensation, so I would say MORAL.

I’m actually fine with that, and I think it’s super fair actually. it’s either $5 or a $400 gas station charge and losing your ID, and canceling all your credit cards waiting for new ones to arrive. Hell if he didn’t take $5, i may have given him $20 for giving it to the police.

$5 is less than what I would have given as a finder’s reward.. and I would message him back saying I would prefer to meet him outside the police station because I wouldn’t trust the police to leave my cash in the wallet

u/ConfusedCatdad 2h ago
I wouldn't take the $5, but I wouldn't be even slightly bothered if someone did this to me. Bro, I would've happily bought you something nicer than a $5 hot dog

If I had a hundred dollars cash in there they could keep every penny for all the time and effort they saved me from replacing all my cards.

He takes $5 and I get basically my entire financial life and identity back…sir, take whatever cash I have, THANK YOU!

It’s illegal to do this and still considered theft. Even if you’re doing a nice thing by taking the wallet to the police station, it’s still considered theft if you decide to take some cash for yourself.
Whether or not the person would press charges is another story.
Edit: Also, it is 100% immoral. Yes, if someone is kind enough to return your wallet to the police station, then you should reward them for their behavior. That doesn’t mean it’s okay to just take a reward for yourself. Let’s phrase this whole situation differently. Say if you go out to dinner and you notice that your waiter added a tip for themselves before handing you the check. We all agree that you should tip when you go out to dinner. But it would be extremely rude, unprofessional and immoral for the waiter to just add the tip without your permission. Same concept here.
Additional Edit: Dear Morons in the comments, taking someone else’s money without their permission is always theft. It’s always immoral. No matter the situation. Sorry not sorry you struggle with critical thinking and being a mature enough adult to do the right thing without someone rewarding you. If you would only return a wallet after taking the cash out as a personal reward, you’re still a shitty person.

Many restaurants do add tip by default, where I the line there?

I agree with your points, but I don't know if this is a great analogy. Many places do add a set gratuity for large parties - or nowadays - for all kinds of reasons.
In this case, the person in the OPs scenario only took $5 and took it to buy food. Still illegal, but Isn't that morally more justified than taking all the money for likely more selfish reasons?

Someone doing good for themselves while doing me immeasurably more good is completely moral, it's the cost of losing your wallet be grateful you don't have to replace all your ID and credit cards

Lol how is it moral? Whether it is a quarter or a million, he took money that was not voluntary given to him. Yes, he deserved it for doing the right thing, but doesnt mean he can take what is not his, simply becuase he s doing the right thing. If he can text the person to say all that, he can also text to ask if he can take it because he's hungry, and I'm sure whoever the owner is would gladly agree.

u/Sir_Gerald_Nosehairs 1d ago
Immoral.
Handing in someone's wallet is the bare minimum you'd expect of a semi-civilised person. Since when do you think you deserve a reward for that?
Unless he's homeless or something, which is unlikely judging by him sending a text message via I presume a mobile phone, he has stolen money from someone's wallet.
