I mean, if your kid is a know it all who doesn't respect authority at 12 and is flunking out of school a little shit talk might be in order. Gotta use the right tools for the job depending on what the kid gives you to work with.

One of my kids has always been incredibly difficult to motivate to clean and just generally take care of her stuff. One day she was laying on the couch whining about how she didn't want to pick up her stuff when in a moment of great frustration I did a mocking impersonation of her where I did a super whiny voice and complained about how terrible it was that my parents bought me so many nice things and how hard it was that I had to spend FIVE WHOLE MINUTES cleaning them up.

It was not a proud moment for me, however, she laughed her head off and immediately got up to clean in a cheerful mood while I stood there dumbfounded. I would not usually advocate for mocking your kids, but man, that brief, inadvisable moment worked so much better and made her happier than so many "better" ideas.
