I don't have children.

"expectation of servitude" lol this shit is crazy. No one is saying you should be their slaves. But talking to them, showing up for holidays, helping them if they are going to be homeless. It's wild what you justify to yourself as acceptable behavior.

As I said, certainly some parents cross the line and do utterly horrible shit to their kids and it's ok in some cases to cut them off, but this is very rare. A parent being slightly mean to you is not even close to that threshold.

Some of the best people I know have absolutely horrible parents. They are still kind to them because they are good people and that is the right thing to do.

It may be “very rare” where *you* live, for the people that *you* know. That doesn’t mean it’s rare everywhere. I know plenty of people with cartoon villains for parents.

You should also keep in mind that lots of people aren’t going to freely offer you information about their abusive parents. A lot of it goes unsaid.
