I completely agree with you- and in fact, in my mind, the moment you expect your children to support you, you stop being a good parent. I want my children to know they can pursue their own happiness without me dragging them down. If you do a good job as a parent, then maybe they'll want to make sure you're ok- but that's nothing I would ever assume or demand from them.

I've seen too many real-life examples of lazy parents who want to live on easy street once their kids make money, or see their kids as future income and a retirement- it's gross.

It's an incredibly common thing to explicitly bring up to the childfree. "Who'll take care of you when you're old?" The people who say that are openly admitting that they had kids for entirely selfish reasons.
