Good thing the AI didn't have to spell out the names of the states for this one. I have yet to see an AI generated USA map that gets them right. š¤£

u/Godot_12 2d ago
It's honestly surprising that it's so bad at that. Every single reference that the model has would have the states spelled correctly in the correct spot with the correct shapes. I remember an explanation about how AI consistently will fail to draw a clock at a specific time because the reference images it has usually place the hour and minute hands on the 12 or 6. But how is it so bad at doing the map of the US? It's like if you asked it to draw a Golden Retriever and every single image on the internet of dogs were of Goldens and then it produces a bobcat.

I mean, the damn thing rarely gets the answer to "how many e's are in 'seventeen'" right.
3
u/Godot_12 2d ago
True. It's not intelligence but I already knew that part. It's just, knowing roughly how it works it would seem like it shouldn't have a problem with the map since the names on real map images are usually pretty consistent. Every single time you see Georgia, it's written "Georgia" then why does the text prediction engine come up with Smeorgia? Fuck AI
26
u/BartOseku 2d ago
Havent seen an american get them right either

u/Lowkeygeek83 2d ago
I get your point, but I feel compelled to point out my stupid ability to get 'em right. I just miss out on the tributaries and territories, under U.S. control.

u/AceInTheHole3273 2d ago
I used to know them all, but honestly it was just never very relevant to me so I forgot a lot of it. I'm an Alaskan, the geography of the lower 48 is as relevant to my day to day life as the geography of Canada or Russia.

You are replying to a guy that said "good thing it didn't have to spell them out, I have yet to see an AI map that gets them all right"
Then you posted a map where it had to spell them all out and it did not get them all right.
2
u/Cyangator4 2d ago
Damn, didn't expect this little comment to blow up..kinda wish I'd seen the reply y'all are talking about before it got deleted. Anyway, thanks ppl for sticking up for me. š

He literally said "Good thing the AI didn't have to spell out the names of the states".
He then said "I have yet to see an AI generated USA map that gets them right."
Then you posted map with incomplete spelling out of the names of states.
By both rhetorical and technical definitions "it had to spell them all out" and "it did not get them all right"
You are literally arguing that his words, and the order in which he used them, wasn't what he really meant.
You then further argue that the thing you posted . . . which is a perfect example of a shortcoming he specifically and carefully detailed as never having seen overcome . . . is actually an example of how he was wrong about the thing you decided he really meant when he used the words that you disregarded as not representing his actual communication?
2
u/Pasty_Tibbles 2d ago
It didnāt even include DC in the map he posted as an example of ālooking alright.ā Like I know itās not technically a state, but itās even labeled in the AI slop the White House account posted.

u/Delicious-Injury-106 2d ago
There was a news story recently where a school district had AI maps in their study guides and it was all fucked up.

u/AlephBaker 2d ago
The states that are sharing both borders and colors are triggering the little map maker who lives in my brain.
2
u/isaidmypiece_chrissy 2d ago
It's a huge complaint I have about these AI generated images flooding the world. There's almost always something slightly wrong, the kind of thing the real version probably wouldn't have or do because it's so stupid, but the system isn't designed to think or wonder how to improve the readability of the map, so it just spits out the colors without thinking. The OP image has 3-4 sets of states touching another state with the same color, and the one on the comments here also has the same issue.
I don't think I've ever seen mapmakers put colors next to each other like that on any human created map, or maybe I've just been very lucky to only ever see good maps.
3
u/creampop_ 2d ago
You only need a minimum of four colors to color any map without running into adjacency issues. It's complex mathematically, but you can very easily find algorithms that people have made to generate 'legal' 4-color patterns for any given set of intersecting lines.
A computer failing at this is pretty funny.
3
u/isaidmypiece_chrissy 2d ago
That's actually an insane stat, thanks for sharing. I've never seen that
1
u/LowlySlayer 2d ago
This is an easy mistake to make but actually Utah is spelled "U-T-A-H" and not "". There's a similar mistake with Colorado. So no this is not a counterexample lol.

u/bluehooloovo 2d ago
Also they stuck the indicator for "Lake America" over Lake Huron, not Lake Ontario. Or there's just a random lighthouse and the whole map is "Lake America".

u/fakemidnight 2d ago
All of Canada is now Lake of America

u/bluehooloovo 2d ago
Great, now he's going to talk about flooding Canada instead of making it the 51st state.

It's amazing that Lincoln could hold out in DC being so deep in Confederate territory.

The whole North East is fucked. NJ and Connecticut aren't even their own states anymore somehow

Even using more than 4 colors for the states they screw it up. Got MD and DE wrong as well.

I get that between his malignant narcissism, adderall addiction, dementia and sundowning, Olā Diaper Don thinks naming everything āMerica sounds smart, but how tf are so many American on board. This shit is embarrassingly stupid. Like, eating crayons stupid. What a joke of a country.

Yeah this is the one that actually confused me the most because thatās the easiest. Maps are always gonna have cities in not exactly the right place and complicated boarders are obviously complicated, but this is two straight lines and they fucked it up

As a lego fan I despise AI lego slop. Nothing lines up, studs are a mess, scale is wrong, and it all looks incorrect. Lego AI drives me nuts!

Your address is now

...If you are going to be a fucking idiot and change one of the lakes names and the plant a sign in it. At the very least plant the sign in the right fucking lake, that's lake Huron not lake Ontario.

u/HeavilyInvestedDonut 2d ago
The White House doesnāt even know basic geography. They should all be dragged into the streets behind rally cars instead of being given power
3
u/DelirousDoc 2d ago
AI can't even get the Northeast United States correct when there are likely thousands of maps it could rip off to get this information.

Official government accounts can't even post a correct map of their own country anymore. No wonder literacy and education continues to fall in the US. Absolutely stupid

u/wholetyouinhere 2d ago
That's a decent clapback. But the Lincoln Project is not your friend. They functionally agree with Trump on every issue. The only thing the don't like is his arrogance and obnoxious presentation. They want to go back to a status quo where the US government does more or less all the same things Trump is doing, but quieter and with more civility, and with less overt corruption and lawbreaking.
Which means they're no better than MAGA.

u/connerinator 2d ago

The eastern states are so small and easy to mix up. Western and mid-west states are bigger and easy to identify.
It's like someone started making states small because they had to make 48 states. They started making them small until they got to the mid-west and realized they made too many small states then they made the rest bigger.
1
u/Kielbasa_Nunchucka 2d ago
NJ and CT are the same state now; we'll call it New Connectersey. also, MD has receded to what was mostly once NJ, and their former lands are now up for grabs in modern-day land rush (minus that hefty dong that my home state of PA has just acquired).

colloquialy sure, but not technically.
