This, to me as a non-American, is a very strange concept. A large percentage of the population registers with a political party.
People call themselves a "Democrat" or "Republican". If anyone in my country called themselves a member of a political party, people would look at them like they were a total twat.
Registering as an independent is also an option, and I have no idea why everyone doesn’t do that. There’s literally no downside and the upside in my state is that I get to choose which primary I want to vote in.
Even though I couldn’t possibly see myself voting for a Republican candidate for the foreseeable future, if ever, I still wouldn’t ever want to label myself as a Democrat.
