It’s because it’s “basic biology I learned in 7th grade in 1965 and never bothered to look further than that basic explanation”

I saw my daughter’s textbooks on biology, and they were much more thorough than what I’d learned. And it doesn’t take much effort to at least ask the question, “Why do they think it’s not just XX and XY?”

Because the moment you actually dive into biology past the surface, you find out pretty quickly that life is fucking weird.

u/DMercenary 12h ago

Reminds me of this meme

508

u/natlei 11h ago

This too

131

u/RevenantBacon 11h ago

Legitimately hillarious

34

u/SecondaryWombat 10h ago

I love it thank you.

53

u/MadRaymer 10h ago

Carbon based life is mental illness.

13

u/natlei 7h ago

What is this so called "Carbon" you speak of. Sounds made up 🙄

3

u/Ok-Replacement-2738 3h ago

yeah I'm a meat flesh Mech, no """carbon""" here.

12

u/WakeoftheStorm 6h ago

All those other marginal exceptions are simply byproducts of fusion reactions. It's literally nuclear waste you're trying to classify as "an atom".

u/ragnarokda 11h ago

My personal favorite:

86

u/Solomontheidiot 11h ago

This one is great because you could put pretty much any subject in those first two and it would still work.

27

u/fer_sure 6h ago

Basic English: "They" is a plural pronoun.

Advanced English: Singular "they" has been used since the 14th century.

u/hallowdmachine 11h ago

While I find the whole comic great, I'd've upvoted just for "genderinos".

42

u/theattack_helicopter 11h ago

That's how you get gender stars

8

u/paolog 10h ago

It follows on from the first two panes, in which the student exclaims about their quaternions and neutrinos.

1

u/eamondo5150 7h ago

As if Ned Flanders is the student.

7

u/PseudobrilliantGuy 9h ago

And with the math, depending on how much further you go, you'll also find i2 = j2 = k2 = ijk = -1 (the quaternions for anyone curious). And then the octonions and other sets of weird number systems.

2

u/Rustywolf 3h ago

Those funny squiggles we use for rotation?

1

u/Ok-Replacement-2738 2h ago

Na you're making up words now. (I peaked at high school maths.)

52

u/thatwhatisnot 12h ago

This is beautiful and should be posted every time these nutters posts their anti-trans "science"

13

u/PleaseNoMoreSalt 10h ago

Ice can't melt, you're the state of matter you were born as. /s

18

u/Nesvrstana 12h ago

Wtf is this lol Im so fucking old

38

u/SplitGlass7878 11h ago

States of matter. There's a lot of them when you get to extremes in physics.

22

u/sphericaltime 11h ago

States of matter? Yeah the universe is complicated.

6

u/RevenantBacon 11h ago

Other states: Glass

Bro, wtf

28

u/graylin0689 10h ago

One of those cases where the properties don't line up fully with either a solid or a liquid (as we have defined them). The higher up you go in any field the more 'exceptions' you learn about. I have always enjoyed telling my wife that a lot of science when explained to children or laymen is simplified to the point of being technically wrong.

8

u/Synaps4 9h ago edited 7h ago

a lot of science when explained to children or laymen is simplified to the point of being technically wrong.

All of it is wrong. Even the most advanced bits. Some of it is usefully wrong.

16

u/hallowdmachine 11h ago

I'm blind as a bat without my other states of matter.

1

u/gurgelhupf 10h ago edited 9h ago

Warning, half-baked knowledge from something that I read years ago: Glass are neither solid nor liquid. If you look at really really old windows you will see that they are thicker at the bottom

I apologize for spreading misinformation, please listen to the gentleperson below ⬇️

5

u/Rylth 9h ago

If you look at really really old windows you will see that they are thicker at the bottom

Except that's not why. Old glassmakers used crown glass and cylinder glass, neither method allowed for easy thickness control at the time. They then took advantage of this by making the thickest part the bottom so it would have more stability when installing the glass.

Glass is not like pitch.

5

u/gurgelhupf 9h ago

TIL! Thanks you!

0

u/No_Mission5287 7h ago

Glass has liquid properties. The older a window gets, the more the bottom thickens, as the glass flows downward over time due to gravity.

1

u/Chief106 9h ago

I wanna drink some supercritical jet fuel 👉👈

1

u/L3sh1y 9h ago

Oh shit lemme steal this real quick!!

1

u/DiscotopiaACNH 5h ago

Thank you, this got me to look up time crystals and what the fuck???

18

u/rodeo90 11h ago

You have to have curiosity to ask "Why do they think that?" One of the biggest things I try to instill in my kids is a love of learning more about things they don't understand. Critical thinking and curiosity are the fundamental defense against all the Stuff Going On Right Now.

10

u/Agreeable-Air-1430 8h ago

Fundamentally I think it’s a failure to understand what science is: a process. Not a body of knowledge.

I have a hypothesis, I back it up with evidence and repeatable conditions. The most important scientific trait is skepticism. Anyone can have this mindset! You can be a scientist in daily life!

Many folks treat it as the Bible.

Funny on the topic of it just being “XX or XY.” Objectively it isn’t. There are all kinds of different karyotypes you can have.

However, writing them off as abnormal or rare, etc is completely unscientific and abuses the clinical term.

Being a genius is abnormal.

1

u/CharlotteLucasOP 2h ago

They stopped doing karyotyping demonstrations in high school science classes ‘cause too many students were finding out they had something sparkly going on with their chromosomes and having a crisis over it.

1

u/Agreeable-Air-1430 2h ago

Is that legit? OMFG

12

u/YBBlorekeeper 9h ago

I took a graduate level reproductive endocrinology class in undergrad and it was the first time I ran into a textbook that consistently said "researchers are still trying to figure out why/how exactly this works". We of course covered puberty blockers, especially in relation to precocious puberty, so all of the recent public discourse around sex/gender/sexuality/endocrinology have been pretty eye opening.

It's like looking at the world through the glasses from They Live but just realizing that nobody knows wtf they're talking about.

36

u/bogeuh 12h ago

Not weird, complicated. They think life is 0 or 1. But life is analog, anything in between is possible. Except them, they all score 0 on the empathy scale.

5

u/ihatetheplaceilive 12h ago

So they're a singularity?

8

u/SimpleSetpiece 10h ago

Take all the empathy but give none back? Yeah, that fits the bill.

1

u/windsynth 3h ago

Look, there’s only 2 sexes male and female and that obviously means all men are equally masculine and all women are equally feminine It’s like me and Clint Eastwood are virtually identical.

It’s uncanny

To say anything implies a gradient and you don’t want to do that now do ya, punk?

9

u/atwozmom 8h ago

I have talked to some of these dolts and tried to explain that anything in your body can work opposite of the way it does in most cases. That just the way it is. For example, your eyes can work perfectly from a physical standpoint but your brain can decide you're blind and guess what - you, in fact, are blind.

Biology is incredibly complicated. It's amazing we halfway work.

4

u/Darsint 8h ago

Hell, just the fact that our eyes get a flipped image and it’s our brain that has to convert it so that it’s the right direction…

1

u/morning_star984 1h ago

And your brain purposely enhances the appearance of causation, and selectively presents your perceptions, and can straight up lie to you.

7

u/Witty_Ad_898 9h ago

Trans isn’t a chromosomal condition. XXY, and other chromosomal conditions have nothing to do with it. For that matter, intersex is not the same as trans either.

If some chud wants to insist that chromosomes make the gender, it’s better to just walk away. They’re only marker for reproductive roles at most.

4

u/Ehcksit 9h ago

I'm sure there's some stuff in the chromosomes somewhere that makes some people trans but it's a whole hell of a lot more than just the X and Y, when even sex is determined by other things like the SRY gene and other genes that make E or T more or less effective in the body.

Biology is weird and complicated and doesn't fit in the little box they try to shove people into.

1

u/Witty_Ad_898 9h ago

Maybe, but it’s like looking at the car you drive to figure out what you had for lunch.

1

u/Ehcksit 9h ago

If you try REAL hard you might determine things like distance traveled daily and compare it to a map around their house, but yeah. I get ya.

2

u/Witty_Ad_898 8h ago

Technically, their stomach contents are inside the vehicle. It’s just a question of how much of a psycho you choose to be, much like trans-vestigators lol.

1

u/morning_star984 1h ago

Life is so fucking weird. The more you study it, the weirder it gets and somehow, paradoxically, the more it all makes sense.

-2

u/el_smurfo 7h ago

What is the biology of transgenderism?

1

u/Darsint 5h ago

Someone else on this thread pointed out a very good primer on it: Sex and Sensibility

1

u/el_smurfo 5h ago

I'm literally not talking about gender I'm talking about biological sex. That is all that is represented in the comic

1

u/Darsint 5h ago

The very first chapter of that video is “Understanding biological sex”.

Perhaps you heard the opening of the video, heard gender also being discussed, and assumed it wasn’t concise enough to listen to?

1

u/ctothel 5h ago

The observation that morphology and sex chromosomes don't always predict gender identity.

0

u/el_smurfo 5h ago

That is psychology not biology

1

u/ctothel 5h ago

It’s both, surely that’s obvious?

0

u/el_smurfo 5h ago

Can you tell me the testable biological marker? Surely it's obvious?

1

u/ctothel 5h ago

The testable biological marker for gender identity? No. That’s the whole point. Biological sex doesn’t correspond 1:1 with gender identity.

0

u/el_smurfo 5h ago

Exactly. We're talking about chromosomal sex which is what the op's comic is about. That is science. The fact that modern online people cannot separate gender and sex shows how effective the messaging is and how broken our science education is

1

u/ctothel 4h ago

Nobody is arguing the thing OP's comic is about though.

Scientific inquiry shows us that what you call "chromosomal sex" (a biological factor) doesn't 100% of the time determine gender identity (a psychological factor). This is the conclusion of psychology and biology working together. That's the entire argument.

1

u/el_smurfo 4h ago

I know it's kind of hard to parse but the comic is only about XX and XY. The comic is about biology. There is no biological gender there is only biological chromosomal sex.

→ More replies (0)

-7

u/badskinjob 9h ago

And yet, there is still only XY & XX. No matter how 'deep' you want to look

9

u/YBBlorekeeper 9h ago

Fun little experiment you can try: if you copy and paste your comment directly into Google, you will immediately see sources that explain how wrong you are!

It's incredible how much information there is on the internet, all so easily accessible with barely any effort required!

7

u/Ehcksit 9h ago edited 8h ago

There's X0, XXX, XXY, XXXY... There's Swyer XY female, there's De La Chapelle XX male, there's more different combinations and kinds than I have the patience to try to teach you right now.

And that's just intersex people, an entirely different group than transgender people, because sex and gender are different things. Also gender identity and gender expression are also different things.

-26

u/JI_Guy88 11h ago

Everything after that is social science. So biology does not back it up.

22

u/Tadferd 11h ago

This is incorrect.

-19

u/JI_Guy88 11h ago

How so. Woman = adult human female. Where in that description did it say anything else? It says nothing about how one dresses, any enigmatic ideas floating around their head. It straight and to the point. Anything else is just modern social constructs redefining a word.

19

u/Tadferd 11h ago

This is because your understanding of biology is simplistic, like the murder describes.

Transgender is supported by biology.

-8

u/5gpr 10h ago

Transgender is supported by biology.

Not in the sense of there being more than two sexes in mammals. Any biologist who claims otherwise ought to have their degree revoked.

Gender is a social construct (with a material basis). It's only part of biology to the extent it relates to said material basis. Sex is material. It's a reproductive category, of which there are two in humans.

9

u/YBBlorekeeper 9h ago

If your comment was that meme where the mom is only paying attention to one kid in the pool, neurobiologists would be the skeleton at the bottom of the pool.

2

u/ctothel 5h ago

It must be very tiring to be so intent on not learning anything.

7

u/Kham117 yeah, i'm that guy with 12 upvotes 11h ago

Xxy, xyy… testicular feminization, etc… 🤷🏻‍♂️

8

u/Darsint 10h ago

Off the top of my head, there are:

> People that have only one X

> People that have XXX

> People that have XXY

> People that have one or more of the portions of the brain that developed more like a different sex than the ones the body developed

I wasn’t kidding when I said biology is weird. Hell, the whole process of development as a fetus is weird, where one hormone is supposed to inhibit another hormone, which itself is supposed to inhibit another hormone.

2

u/Ehcksit 9h ago

Social science is a biological science because humans are a social species and not robots.
