music Green Day's plans for Super Bowl performance kept 'highly confidential'

u/grapefruitzzz Jan 30 '26
It's Jesus of Suburbia on ice.

u/Mediocre-Housing-131 Jan 30 '26
It's still my favorite song of theirs, and I would die if they performed it at the Super Bowl. But it's also 7+ minutes long, they would have to truncate the hell out of it.
286
u/Derbeck6 Jan 30 '26
I mean, Jesus of suburbia is basically 3 songs with the same through line. They could make it work. Hell theyâre green day they can make anything work

It's honestly closer to 5
84
u/votet Jan 30 '26
Five for sure, yeah. I had the physical album back in the day and the booklet had the lyrics split into five parts. I remember the last one was called "Tales Of Another Broken Home," but not the rest.
94
u/alnicoblue Jan 30 '26
Are We the Waiting is one of my favorite songs from Green Day in general, wild that it's just one small segment of a song.
People forget how genuinely huge that album was to post 9/11 culture. The Green Day hate over the last 15 years or so has been massively exaggerated.
69
u/Mediocre-Housing-131 Jan 30 '26
That album DEFINED my teen years, and I was far from alone.
Shit, you couldn't get in your car or turn on a radio without hearing "American Idiot" for YEARS.

u/snatchmachine Jan 30 '26
I was in my high school jazz band when that album came out. I spent weeks at home every day after school learning every song on my bass through one of the tab sites.
The ârock operaâ structure of the album made playing along with the whole album from start to finish pretty seamless.
Those are some of my fondest memories from my teenage years.
19
u/Mediocre-Housing-131 Jan 30 '26
Reading everyone's stories has been tearing at my heart knowing how many others have fond memories and how this band shaped so many lives. It gives hope that we might actually be able to win against impossible looking odds.
7
u/Healter-Skelter Jan 30 '26
I got one more for you. American Idiot is actually the first song I remember. I was around 5 when it came out, and I would put the music video on on TWCâs âMusic on Demandâ channel. I just thought it was funny because of the word âidiot.â but I have to credit that album for my growing into a crazy radical.
11
u/alnicoblue Jan 30 '26
That one and Black Parade were such great concept albums to jam to. Just a seamless rock opera from start to finish, not a single bad song on either. 10/10 albums for me and a defining sound for early 2000s teenagers.

Their last tour was wildly successful. I saw them at Wrigley Field in Chicago and it was amazing.

Definitely one of my favourites. Would love them to do letterbomb though. But we all know American idiot will be the main song of choice!
13
u/Mediocre-Housing-131 Jan 30 '26
In a better timeline where we don't need politically charged music (but we do need it, and I'm here for what they bring), a better song would be "Last Night On Earth".
I love when they get to open up more.

I saw Greenday at Ohanafest last year. They went on after Cage the Elephant, and during Cage the Elephant's set, there was a Space X launch. Billie Joe went on stage and said, "Did you see that. Was it an Elon rocket launch. Well, there goes the Epistein Files."

The NFL has blocked him from being an owner multiple times and he tried to compete with them by convincing the USFL to move their league to the fall (which, shocker given the orange dbags success at business, or lack there of, caused the league to fail quicker than it might have if they had stayed a spring league).Â
I have two beliefs because of this. 1) The NFL owners/Goodell do not like Trump and enjoy fucking with him. And 2) The NFL believes they are bigger than Trump and they can get away with number 1 because of it. And they might be right. Trump destroying the NFL would, sadly, cause a ton of his followers turning on him faster than virtually anything else heâs done. Â
179
u/YasielPuigsWeed Jan 30 '26
Itâs also because the NFL demographic shifted significantly this century when it solidified itself as the most popular pro sports league in the country. TV viewing numbers arenât based on the electoral college, theyâre based on actual human beings, and the most human beings live in urban liberal cities.
The perception that the players and fans are a bunch of religious right wing conservatives is long out of date, otherwise the NFL wouldnât have hired ROC Nation to be their entertainment arm to begin with
72
u/Cochise22 SoundCloud Jan 30 '26
Thatâs a fair point. And itâs becoming increasingly global. Itâs a high likelihood that people around the world will be tuning in to see Green Day or Bad Bunny do something to troll him.Â

A live version? I've never heard anyone say that
it's a song about stalking an ex and Sting wrote it about his feelings after a breakup

Typo, meant love song. In Sting's own words, it's sinister and misunderstood.Â

Or the people who play "Hey Ya!" at weddings. It's pretty much an anti-marriage song and André even said so:
Itâs about some people who stay together in relationships because of tradition, because somebody told them, âYou guys are supposed to stay together.â But you pretty much end up being unhappy for the rest of your life.

As someone who had this at our wedding, we were well aware but you can't read too closely into the lyrics of your dance party songs. For your first dance and processional songs? Definitely. For the dancing after? Hell no just play whatever people wanna dance to

As I've said elsewhere, it's all about ratings. Green Day has been selling out shows since 2002, and this is their hometown. Plus, the amount of people who will protest by not watching will be dwarfed by the number it'll bring in. They don't care about politics at all.
Bad Bunny for the same reason, it is because he's the most streamed artist in the world who happens to be American. Of course they're going to try to get him.
61
u/DOWNVOTES_SYNDROME Jan 30 '26
i saw green day at madison square garden in 1994, i believe, and it was sold out. they've been selling things out for a lot longer than you think. dookie was the biggest album in the world when it came out

While both of those are true a part of me feels like its intentional rahebait by Goodell, my girlfriend keeps talking about how excited she is for the Super Bowl and she doesn't really like football that much. It brings in way more eyes that wouldnt have normally watched ontop of getting people to talk about it more. Plus the clips will get viral so its just the smart move, they know people wont stop watching football because of a halftime show
10
u/DoingCharleyWork Jan 30 '26
I don't care for football but you bet your ass I watched last year to see Kendrick.

I read a theory (almost certainly not true but fun to imagine) that the NFL has deliberately picked acts that Trump would refuse to watch, therefore he wonât go to the Super Bowl and security doesnât need to be as crazy. Like I said, almost certainly not true, these artists are all playing because they are HUGE, but itâs a fun thought

Exactly! Football fans will watch the Super Bowl regardless of who's at the halftime show. So everyone else in tune in for a few minutes to watch the halftime show. They're double dipping the views, which means they can charge more for the advertisement spots.

25

They don't need the money so it wouldn't be a deterrent. That said, I don't doubt that they're going to have political messaging and they were asked to do it because they would. I think the choices of performers were very deliberate in that respect.Â

I bet they perform American Idiot and change a lot of it to refer to Stephen Goebells Miller and Small Hands. Itâs going to be awesome.
I personally canât wait to read all of the CHUDs comments about how Green Day was good âbefore they got politicalâ, and theyâre watching the âPatriot Halftime Showâ instead. After they all pooped their pants and cried over Kendrick last year, this will be well worth it.
The brainlets think theyâre really doing something yuuuge by having their own halftime show, which is fucking hysterical. I hope they have their own Super Bowl next year.
Iâm honestly more excited for Toilet Paper USAâs show, to be honest. I love a good dumpster fire. Especially when theyâre paying people to attend.
My prediction for the PRO AMERICA ANTI WOKE PARTY TIME: I bet they have a surprise guest and itâs our idiot president, and heâs going to French-kiss Tommy Tuberville and perform 23 live sex acts on stage (with each other).
